[LegacyUG] Default Browser Selection
I have entered the hard disk directory information, of my Google Chrome browser, in the Legacy Customize Launch Alternate Applications Alternate Web Browser location. I verified that the correct hard disk location is/was correct by selecting the Launch button. Sure enough the Google Chrome browser comes up (as it should). However: When I choose the Legacy Home tab Legacy News and click on any of the Legacy URL info . Legacy ALWAYS BRINGS UP INTERNET EXPLORER and does not use my preferred Google Chrome browser. Pat, Guess I am missing something here, but how do you know? You are probably correct as Legacy is based on MS Access and it makes sense to use their products for its internal use - hence the use of Bing for mapping. Since the News appears within Legacy I cannot tell which browser it's using. Evening Ron, Well, Legacy says that I can use any browser I want to use; as long as I let the Legacy program know where it is located on my disk. I let Legacy know (see the details below) and the program verified that I had given it the correct hard disk address. Legacy did in fact start Google Chrome (as it should). In answer to your question you might want to follow these example/steps and you will see what I mean. I) Choose Legacy Home tab 2) Choose Bring your Legacy family file with you on a USB drive, cell phone, or PalmOS device 3) About half way down on the page a URL appears for Learn more about MojoPac by CLICKING HERE. 4) Click on by clicking here. Problem: On my machine it brings up Internet Explorer (which is not my default browser) in a separate window; instead of using my default Google Chrome browser. Comment: I thought the purpose of this particular Legacy Customize Screen was to allow you to use the browser of your choice, and/or the Alternate Word Processor of your choice, and/or the Alternate Text Editor of your choice, and/or the Alternate Adobe Acrobat Reader of your choice. Wonder why I keep getting Internet Explorer screens; when Legacy has provided us with a dedicated screen letting us choose support equipment other than the defaults chosen by Legacy? Pat, Ok, I now see where you are coming from, I wasn't able to complete the steps as the application was busy, but saw enough. When you click that link you are no longer in Legacy but actually in the Legacy website, over which the program has no control - see the URL at the top of the Legacy Home page. I must admit, I was under the impression that the browser specified inside the Legacy options, was the one that would be used when previewing any generated web pages. I also know, that the Legacy program uses a WebBrowser control as part of the Legacy Home Page tab. Further, this control (which makes the programming of a simple browser so easy) *has* to be based on IE. MS still haven't removed this dependency from any Windows version even though this was, I thought, what all the law suits were about. When referring to IE, you must make a clear distinction between the visible part of IE and the engine that runs under the hood. The engine is *always* used whenever a program makes use of th MS-developed WebBrowser control. No getting around this, unless and until the likes of Mozilla and Google split their browsers into the same two parts. To satisfy (get around?) the legal issues, all MS have done is allow you to choose a default browser that will be used whenever you double-click on an html file on your disk. Don't expect this to be used automatically by what is really a very simple piece of code where everything happens under the hood. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg. When you are using the Legacy Home tab you are using IE. On the Home Tab, if you right-click on any link and select Open in New Window, IE will open a new IE window. This is as it should be. Now, in your case, if you look at the HTML source code for the Learn more about MojoPac by CLICKING HERE link you will find 'target=_blank'. This does the same thing as right-clicking on a link and selecting Open in New Window. It tells the executing browser to open another window (in this case an IE window) and display the page. [LegacyUG] Access Table
I have encountered a colossal problem that was brought about by an action I must have inadvertently taken (shame on me) to allow a re-numbering of one or more fields - specifically the MRIN numbers. Evidently I wasn't paying attention on a GEDCOM upload feature and didn't discover this until yesterday - after several of these uploads occurred to my dismay. My problem - I use the 'MRIN+number' feature to file paper documents and also enter this number in the detail 'FileID' box in Legacy. I'm in the process of renumbering these hundreds of documents due to the above situation - a most laborious project!!! My Hope - Is there any table, when viewing a 'Bob1.fdb' (I have a multitude of backups thank goodness), in Access that would permit me to enter/alter the File ID? I have looked at my 'tblSX' and observe that there are a number of items that look like my MRIN+number data under the column entitled 'Filing Ref' . This appears to be a possible opportunity to correct my errors. Is it possible that changing/correcting/entering the current File Id number (noted as my MRIN+number) in this column might accomplish my goal? If not, please suggest a solution. [LegacyUG] Pocket Genealogist vs. GedStar Pro
I've just read Bring your Legacy file with you on the Legacy News page. Does anyone in the group have experience with Pocket Genealogist or GedStar Pro? I have a Palm ES2, but I am contemplating the purchase of a new cellphone with the thought of reducing my gadgets so that I just have one mobile device. Is there anyone on the group using either one of these programs on a cellphone? If so, which one, and how well does it work with Legacy? I would like to be able to carry my information with me and be able to easily sync with my desktop computer when I return home. I understand that Pocket Genealogist may be the best, but I'm restricted to ATT as my carrier, but I'm not so sure about the quality of the Windows mobile based cellphones. Or - would it be better for me to keep my Legacy on GedStar Pro on my Palm and have a separate cellphone? I hope this will be considered on topic, since my whole purpose is being able to carry Legacy with me in the field. Any advice? Thanks in advance, Dede Holden

[LegacyUG] Source template conversion tool
I have the following version of Legacy deluxe version 7.0.0.100. In the Legacy User Guide on page 72, it explains how to convert your basic style master source citations to the Sourcewriter template. I have tried to follow the instructions in the book but am unable to locate the Source Template Conversion Tool from the Master source list options button. I am stumped. Re: [LegacyUG] Pocket Genealogist vs. GedStar Pro
The answer is touched on in the article, but to be blunt: - Pocket Genealogist if you have (or want) Windows Mobile - GenStar Pro if you have (or want) Palm OS After that, there are lots of features and factors, e.g. - Size and format of screen, etc, of the smartphone - Pocket allows update/syncing of device; GenStar does not. - etc. Mike Michael J Method phone= 317-284-1303 family research of: Method, Feehily, Fredrick, Herzog, tenEyck, Belsley In a message dated 8/11/2009 1:29:14 P.M. RE: [LegacyUG] Pocket Genealogist vs. GedStar Pro
Dede, Pocket Genealogist will work with any Windows Mobile phone from any of the cell phone carriers, or in your case ATT. I would highly recommend a touch screen device vs. the non-touchscreen as its much easier to navigate around the program on a touchscreen version. (although both types work with Pocket Genealogist) A quick check on the ATT Wireless site shows the following as possibilities: Pantech Matrix Pro Samsung Propel (non-touchscreen) LG Incite HTC Fuze Samsung Epix Samsung BlackJack II (non-touchscreen I believe, I know the original BlackJacks were and would assume the new ones are too) The above have quite a few customer reviews per phone, so you may want to read them. I have an HTC Touch Pro (on Alltel) which is very similar (perhaps even the same device) as the HTC Fuze and I like it quite a bit so far, it's definitely a much better phone than the last device I had. It works well too for Pocket Genealogist although its only a 2.8 screen. You can get much larger screens but for me the smaller screen also means a smaller device, so I like it because it makes for a better phone.(But if you have vision issues or just want a larger screen, the 2.8 screen might be an issue for you) BTW, you SHOULD be able to buy any U.S. targeted GSM phone and use it on the ATT network, so you dont necessarily have to buy it from ATT.Expect to pay more since the phone company isnt subsidizing it. (But that also may be a way to go if you want a phone but not a data plan) Visit www.htc.com for example to see what is available it does have to be a GSM phone. BTW, Pocket Genealogist (Advanced version) can directly read Legacy databases and write to Legacy databases with the changes you make on the device. (Most device genealogy programs wont even let you make changes to the data on the device let along sync it back into your original desktop database) If you have any questions about the program or specific device features, you can email me directly at supp...@northernhillssoftware.com. Re: [LegacyUG] Access Table
Dennis - When I set up my paper source filing system to support my digital files, I numbered master sources with 9000 series. i.e., 9212 might be 'Marriage License in Dead Center, Kansas'. Then I might assign 9030 as the Master source for Joe and Susie who married in said location, but filed their marriage license as 3211-1, 321 being their MRIN. This works for me - whether acceptable to others , I don't know. Now, the problem is that I did not recognize by moving my file to another PC via GEDCOM, I failed to recognize that MRIN 3211 might now become MRIN 4401 because of the renumbering. So, my 'FileID' of 3211-1 now does not allow me to find Joe and Susie by entering MRIN 3211 in the search field because 3211 is now assigned to Sam and Martha. I am seeking reassurance that if I change the MRIN from 3211-1 to the MRIN of Joe and Susie in the re-numbered system via Access, can I enter their new MRIN of 5617-1 in lieu of 3211-1 in table tblSX field FilingRef (the15th field) as proposed by Jennie and Valerie? Can I then save the .fdb file and open it in Legacy and find that the change took place as I would like. I porpose to do as they suggested for a test case, but would appreciate feedback I realize you basically asked for the time and I described how to make a watch. It is hard to write the problem and hope that the question is lucid. :-) I suppose experimentation is what I need to do - just needed some guidance from folks more acquainted with the Access package than I. Bob: Your explanation is still confusing. You speak of MRINs like 3211-1. MRINs can't have dashes. Please give a very specific example (see below) or just go ahead and experiment on a copy of your database. The others were correct in that tblSX.FilingRef is the File ID. A specific example might be something like: Joe Susie had MRIN 3211 before. After importing into a new file via GEDCOM they were assigned MRIN 5617. Dede, I realize this isn't exactly what you're asking, but as someone who finds all PDA-type devices too small (and too expensive when the higher cell phone access fees are considered), laptops too big, and thinks a cell-phone should be used for phone calls, I have been quite happy with my new netbook. It is inexpensive, lightweight, fits easily in my bag or large purse, has a reputed 9 hour battery life (and comes close in actual practice), and I can touch-type on it! I've taken it to libraries and courthouse basements and transcribed or abstracted documents directly into Legacy, along with negative searches into a Research Log I maintain with Legacy's To Do feature. Upon return home, I just copy my .fdb file via a flash drive back into my desktop copy of Legacy, and I'm all set. The only negative is that it took about 10 days to become comfortable with the smaller keyboard; not much of a negative in my opinion. Just something to think about... [LegacyUG] Using Groups
I am a newbie to this list. I wish to record information about multiple lines of the same surname. i.e. John Smith is my ancestor and I have recorded information. Also have information about Isaac Smith and many others. Has anyone used the group function to separate various unrelated lines of the same surname? Thanks for the help. t Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

Re: [LegacyUG] Access Table
How long ago did your initial error take place? If all you have done since is upload (I think you mean import) some GEDCOMs, by far the easiest way to fix the issue is to restore your data using the backup you made just prior to the initial screw up. That will get you back to all the original numbers. Then redo your imports using the correct parameters. With a proper backup you don't need to fuss with Access at all. Gary Templeman - Original Message - From: SgtBob s...@cox.net To: Legacy LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Tuesday, August 11, 2009 8:21 AM Subject: [LegacyUG] Access Table I have encountered a colossal problem that was brought about by an action I must have inadvertently taken (shame on me) to allow a re-numbering of one or more fields - specifically the MRIN numbers. He imported from a gedcom, renumbering his MRIN's. He wants a way to re-number them the way they were.
Re: [LegacyUG] Access Table
Sorry - I seemed to have deleted my answer while clearing out the extra stuff. If the Gedcom is still available - make a new file, import the gedcom, and don't renumber the MRIN's On Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 10:56 PM, Heather Stovold hstov...@gmail.comwrote: He imported from a gedcom, renumbering his MRIN's.
