Re: [LegacyUG] Batch enter event

2009-08-13 Thread 1familytree
Follow-up-

Just to update the list, I was able to accomplish my task with the use of a
third party software.
It was an investment of $10 that allowed me to create a tombstone event for
each person buried in a particular cemetery.
I had to go thru a few simple steps each time for each of the 18 cemeteries,
but in a matter of hours, I was able to have created a tombstone event for 17,
591 persons!

Thanks to all who offered their ideas on solutions.

That clipboard is great, I agree. However, it is inoperable if you are
using the *Free* Legacy version. One of the several reasons I happily switched
to the Deluxe paid version a couple weeks ago!

I agree with Jenny. The Event Clipboard is a great tool. It even
copies the Source Citation with one click. That's how I would
proceed.

idiosyncrasies of GMail before leaping to false conclusions :-)

When you post a message to the list through GMail, the copy sent out from
the list won't show up in your GMail Inbox until someone replies to it.
This doesn't mean that the list hasn't received it. Checking your GMail
inbox is futile. To see whether a particular message has reached the list,
check the List Archives.

Missing events in descendant report

I have noticed that when I print a descendant narrative report, and include
"events", that not all the events are showing up?
I have checked to make sure they are not private, but other than that I cant
find a reason why some print and others do not.
I have run maint/database repair and that hasn't solved the problem.
Any thoughts on what be the cause?

Legacy geodatabase. It still has nothing to do with Legacy. It is not a
Legacy add on or affiliate. Perhaps in the future you will clearly state

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Location Database - Updates

2009-08-08 Thread 1familytree

Gene,

I was going to let all this pass, but I will refrain from typing what I am
thinking.

I guess my original post was not as explanatory as it should have been.

I use the data from the file I receive as a separate reference database when
locations cannot be found within the Geo-database incorporated into Legacy.

AGAIN, I use it as a separate reference database.

And if you are not comfortable with using database software, this is
probably not a viable option for you. But I often see listers referring to
manipulating their data in Access, so I would guess those people would find
this option as a benefit.

I am sure that there is a way to update the actual Geo-Code file in Legacy,
but I am not a coder or programmer and don't want to do anything that might
effect proper operation of my Legacy software.

You say that you were "rewarded with more than 33MB of useless text files",
if so, you did not follow the directions properly.

To use the link I provided for an update to the listing of the Geo-Database
here are the steps I followed;

Go to http://www.geodatasource.com/cities-free.html

Click on download full version, make sure you are on the FREE page titled,
"GeoDataSourceT World Cities Database Free Edition"
If you are already a registered user of their site, log in and you will be
directed to the download page.

If you are not a registered user, you must register. There is NO Charge.
After you register you will receive an email confirming your account is
active and then log in and go to the download page.
You can also go to the "my account" page and at the bottom of your page will
show you what files you are entitled to, in my case, only 1
"GeoDataSource-Cities-Free.Text.zip"

Download the FREE edition zipped file.

You can then import that file into any database management product. To quote
from their site;
"SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL or other database software
application capable of importing 2,248,843 records from a standard
tab-delimited ASCII text file and sufficient disk space to import the
database "

Once you have imported the records into a database, you can use the search
function to find cities.

I do not know how old the Legacy version 7 Geo-Code database is, but in
about half of the instances where I do not find a city in Legacy, I find
them in GeoDataSource. The other half are usually misspelled or names that
no longer exist.

I was merely pointing out as a reply to a comment that the "Legacy database
has never been updated" that this is what I use.

GeoSourceData updates their downloadable free list every month.

I have NO affiliation with that company nor any connection to the product.

I hope that this can be of great help to those Legacy users who need a more
current reference lookup that what Legacy provides.

(Ron, Thank you for comment "I strongly suspect that Jay
misunderstood the context of my response to the OP and was merely trying to
suggest somewhere were updated lists are available."

That was exactly the intention.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Burial Address

2009-08-05 Thread 1familytree

Thank you for being more specific, as everyone should be when listing steps.

But that only solves the problem if Keith listed the cemetery name and
address within the Burial Place-Burial address fields, AND did not use the
same exact name in the Burial Location field.

My own personal problem is that I have added an image link to the Burial
Location-Burial Picture field. and there is no way to report on that field.

Pat and listers

For Gedcom extensions.

Go to your windows control Panel> Default Programs> Associate File Types.

In the Left column you will see all the file suffix extensions that are on
your computer OR are handled by any program you may have installed on your
computer.

Go down to .ged
and click / highlight that item.

In the upper right corner click on change program.

In the pop up window select Legacy. If legacy doesn't show then browse to
C:Legacy Folder and select the legacy.exe program, which usually resides in
the first level within the legacy folder. depending on your version, (mine
is in Legacy7) your folder may say Legacy or Legacy

That will "associate" the .ged files to be opened by Legacy and use the
Legacy ICON.

A search of the archives or google might turn up more on this. I only

Re: [LegacyUG] Things I Would Like to See

John,

I have 170,000 people in my database. A calendar including everyone is 626
pages. That's not handy.

One way to do this would be to create a Calendar List Report for all
individuals in you file. This will sort everyone by birth date. You can
save a PDF of this report have it on hand to refer to at any time.

CE,
Secondary sorting in the index does not sort the DB by birth date. It
sorts on names (or RIN) first. I would like to see sorting on birth
date completely independent of the name. Take a look at Rebecca's
example. Sorting the index on another field should not pose a problem
for the programmers.

Randolph,

The fact that FTM does it without you having to take the time to click on
existing and look. Again, for those of us with large files, these features

 are efficient and worthwhile.

The first is easily avoidable by selecting "Link to existing person" to see if
they're already there.
The second is next to the person's name if you've so customized the Index View.

Ron,

I have to agree with Chick. If you had ever used FTM you would realize how
great time saving features those are.
The duplicate feature was really great and with a family who reuses the same
names over and over again, I have to always check carefully.
The birth date sort in FTM is a simple click of a button, just like you can
currently sort on RIN, First or Surname now in Legacy, the fact that you can
do it as you suggested with the search function, is terribly time consuming.

I wouldn't want the first and the second you can already do by using the

I thought that I remembered seeing this covered previously, but a search of

I have many persons who already have tombstones, but yet are still living. I
would like to link them to the picture of their tombstone, but as soon as I put
any info into the burial place field or add the image link in burial pictures,
the living flag changes from yes to no.
Any secrets to getting around this?

I use the free programme called Irvanview to crop and print my census images.
That way when printing, you do not get all the nasty black edges. I also use
this programme together with the 'print screen' facility when saving newspaper
articles and printing out from the digital photos of documents.
Its a very handy tool and free!

I must not write on this list any more re computers, but just to let you know
that I cannnot find the site I was on. I spent an hour just now and the best I
could come up with is Consumers Report.org - but that was not the Microsoft one
I found the info on. I am sorry about that. One thing I found that was
interesting to old me - Windows 7 and Vista are practically the same thing - it
says.

Re: [LegacyUG] eligible males for war time service

2009-01-28 Thread 1familytree

Shelly,

Here are the details for the birth dates of men who has to register for the
WWI draft;

From Ancestry.com;

History
On 6 April 1917, the United States declared war on Germany and officially
entered World War I. Six weeks later, on 18 May 1917, the Selective Service
Act was passed, which authorized the president to increase the military
establishment of the United States. As a result, every male living within
the United States between the ages of eighteen and forty-five was required
to register for the draft.

The period of 1880-1920 was a high immigration period to the United States.
Young men were required to register for the draft regardless of their U.S.
citizenship status. Of course, not all the men who registered actually
served in the armed forces, and there were some who served in the war but
did not register for the draft.

Registration
The World War I draft consisted of three separate registrations.

   * First Registration. The registration on 5 June 1917, was for men aged
twenty-one to thirty-one-men born between 6 June 1886 and 5 June 1896.

   * Second Registration. The registration on 5 June 1918, was for men who
had turned twenty-one years of age since the previous registration-men born
between 6 June 1896 and 5 June 1897. Men who had not previously registered
and were not already in the military also registered. In addition, a
supplemental registration on 24 August 1918, was for men who turned
twenty-one years of age since 5 June 1918.

   * Third Registration. The registration on 12 Sept 1918, was for men aged
eighteen to twenty-one and thirty-one to forty-five-men born between 11 Sept
1872 and 12 Sept 1900.

The complete registration included men between the ages of 18 and 45-males
born between 1873 and 1900-who were not already in the military.

Hope this helps

Jay

have been the right age for WWI. I did that and it was great (using the
Legacy WWI draft cards) Does any one by chance have age parameters
(years) for all of the wars? Or, is it safe to guess age 16-40ish to
enlist?
