Re: [LegacyUG] Batch enter event
Follow-up- Just to update the list, I was able to accomplish my task with the use of a third party software. It was an investment of $10 that allowed me to create a tombstone event for each person buried in a particular cemetery. I had to go thru a few simple steps each time for each of the 18 cemeteries, but in a matter of hours, I was able to have created a tombstone event for 17, 591 persons! Thanks to all who offered their ideas on solutions. Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Location Database - Updates
Gene, I was going to let all this pass, but I will refrain from typing what I am thinking. I guess my original post was not as explanatory as it should have been. I use the data from the file I receive as a separate reference database when locations cannot be found within the Geo-database incorporated into Legacy. AGAIN, I use it as a separate reference database. And if you are not comfortable with using database software, this is probably not a viable option for you. But I often see listers referring to manipulating their data in Access, so I would guess those people would find this option as a benefit. I am sure that there is a way to update the actual Geo-Code file in Legacy, but I am not a coder or programmer and don't want to do anything that might effect proper operation of my Legacy software. You say that you were "rewarded with more than 33MB of useless text files", if so, you did not follow the directions properly. To use the link I provided for an update to the listing of the Geo-Database here are the steps I followed; Go to http://www.geodatasource.com/cities-free.html Click on download full version, make sure you are on the FREE page titled, "GeoDataSourceT World Cities Database Free Edition" If you are already a registered user of their site, log in and you will be directed to the download page. If you are not a registered user, you must register. There is NO Charge. After you register you will receive an email confirming your account is active and then log in and go to the download page. You can also go to the "my account" page and at the bottom of your page will show you what files you are entitled to, in my case, only 1 "GeoDataSource-Cities-Free.Text.zip" Download the FREE edition zipped file. You can then import that file into any database management product. To quote from their site; "SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL or other database software application capable of importing 2,248,843 records from a standard tab-delimited ASCII text file and sufficient disk space to import the database " Once you have imported the records into a database, you can use the search function to find cities. I do not know how old the Legacy version 7 Geo-Code database is, but in about half of the instances where I do not find a city in Legacy, I find them in GeoDataSource. The other half are usually misspelled or names that no longer exist. I was merely pointing out as a reply to a comment that the "Legacy database has never been updated" that this is what I use. GeoSourceData updates their downloadable free list every month. I have NO affiliation with that company nor any connection to the product. I hope that this can be of great help to those Legacy users who need a more current reference lookup that what Legacy provides. (Ron, Thank you for comment "I strongly suspect that Jay misunderstood the context of my response to the OP and was merely trying to suggest somewhere were updated lists are available." Ron, I have to agree with Chick. If you had ever used FTM you would realize how great time saving features those are. The duplicate feature was really great and with a family who reuses the same names over and over again, I have to always check carefully. The birth date sort in FTM is a simple click of a button, just like you can currently sort on RIN, First or Surname now in Legacy, the fact that you can do it as you suggested with the search function, is terribly time consuming. My previous program was Family Tree Maker. Following are two features that I would like to see incorporated into Legacy: 1. The ability for Legacy to recognize a possible duplicate person when he/she is being entered. I search for duplicates quite often because I have inadvertenly entered a person without realizing he/she is already in my database. I know how to use the merge function and search for duplicates, but it would be nice if Legacy would "catch" a duplication when the name is being entered and warn that it is a possible duplicate. 2. The ability to sort/search the index by birth date as well as alphabetically or by RIN. This is one feature of FTM I really miss. I often found people who were the same, but had their names spelled slightly different. Comparing individuals by birth date rather than name will sometimes reveal the existence of an un-connected individual with a different name or name change. I have had several instances where I have been able to connect individuals to families by comparing birth dates. If enough of us request these features, maybe the powers to be will incorporate them into the next upgrade. well, I already have over 1000 tombstone images connected thru the burial picture, so I'd rather find a way to handle the 20-30 exceptions, than change my current system. That way when printing, you do not get all the nasty black edges. Tish, Windows 7 IS NOT the same as Vista, please don't believe everything you read.. I AM RUNNING a beta version of Windows 7 and I can promise you it is nothing like Vista, yes it may have the bulk of underlying code from Vista, but to the USER is doesn't look like nor act like Vista. And since this mailing list is not the place to discuss nor post these matters I hope this topic is now CLOSED. Re: [LegacyUG] eligible males for war time service
Shelly, Here are the details for the birth dates of men who has to register for the WWI draft; From Ancestry.com; History On 6 April 1917, the United States declared war on Germany and officially entered World War I. Six weeks later, on 18 May 1917, the Selective Service Act was passed, which authorized the president to increase the military establishment of the United States. As a result, every male living within the United States between the ages of eighteen and forty-five was required to register for the draft. The period of 1880-1920 was a high immigration period to the United States. Young men were required to register for the draft regardless of their U.S. citizenship status. Of course, not all the men who registered actually served in the armed forces, and there were some who served in the war but did not register for the draft. Registration The World War I draft consisted of three separate registrations. * First Registration. The registration on 5 June 1917, was for men aged twenty-one to thirty-one-men born between 6 June 1886 and 5 June 1896. * Second Registration. The registration on 5 June 1918, was for men who had turned twenty-one years of age since the previous registration-men born between 6 June 1896 and 5 June 1897. Men who had not previously registered and were not already in the military also registered. In addition, a supplemental registration on 24 August 1918, was for men who turned twenty-one years of age since 5 June 1918. * Third Registration. The registration on 12 Sept 1918, was for men aged eighteen to twenty-one and thirty-one to forty-five-men born between 11 Sept 1872 and 12 Sept 1900. The complete registration included men between the ages of 18 and 45-males born between 1873 and 1900-who were not already in the military. Hope this helps Jay -- From: "Michele Lewis" Sent: Wednesday, January 28, 2009 1:58 PM To: "Legacy E-Mail List" Subject: [LegacyUG] eligible males for war time service On one of the Legacy videos, Geoff does a search for all males that would have been the right age for WWI.
