[LegacyUG] Source Override feature and Source Clipboard - version 7.0.0.45

2008-07-16 Thread Beth Gay

Hello list,

Is there a way to copy the source detail to the clipboard when one uses
the override feature. I used the override feature on the footnote and
subsequent citation but not on the bibliographic entry. The source
clipboard is not copying the overrides.

[LegacyUG] Legacy User group list and could we have 2 lists

2008-07-10 Thread Beth Gay

Dear list members,

While I appreciate all of the information shared on this list; I would
prefer to have 2 lists. Is that possible? When I am really busy I just
cannot keep up. Presently I have over 800 unread messages.
My desire is to have one list that deals specifically with the Legacy
program.
The second list would address such items as how do you enter your
places, how do you enter your sources; how do you print a page from
Ancestry, how do you enter nicknames, how do you enter unknowns, etc.
If this is not possible or the majority are opposed; no problem. I will
just unsubscribe again and rely on the rootsweb list.

Re: [LegacyUG] Cannot unlock Deluxe

2008-06-29 Thread Beth Gay

Hi Donna,

Did you get your Deluxe edition unlocked? Make sure that you enter your
customer name as you were addressed in the email you received with your
new customer number. You were issued a new number for version 7. Enter
the number as written in the email with the dashes. I don't remember
having to enter an address, so are you sure that you are on the correct
screen? Under the help menu, select unlock Legacy Deluxe.

After you enter the name and number select unlock.

Which program and version were you using prior to Legacy? Depending on

The answer to this is a sort of No! Is the person a new partner? If so they

If the circustances are different please explain exactly the relationship (if
any) between the import and the original.

Hi Jenny,

Thanks, I was expecting Legacy to know that the new person was the
father of an existing person; otherwise why would I drag and drop him to
that box? g I will establish the link or check and see if I have

If you are dragging someone who is husband to a woman already in your
file, are you expecting him to drop into the correct husband position?
He won't do that because Legacy doesn't know that he is that woman's
husband, until you tell it so.

When you have done the drag and drop, click in the empty name area
of the husband's side of the screen and then click Link to an
existing person. Now find the newly imported man in the Name List
and click on Select and he will then drop into the place where you
want him.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing LONG!! url's

2008-06-26 Thread Beth Gay

Hi Don,

It does not matter to me what somewhat else recommends. The website URLs
are here today and gone tomorrow. I agree with you. I cite the URL for
the website only and from the additional information that I enter any
person should be able to find the detail if the website is still in
existence and the referenced subject has not been removed because of a
lawsuit or whatever. It is a good idea to quote the text in case the
information you cited disappears.

I do hold the greatest respect for Elizabeth Mills and her contributions
to the industry standard for genealogy citations; but her book is
written for ideal situations and examples. I am sure that she would
expect one to use common sense and evaluate each citation and the
longevity of such before deciding on the specific citation.

From what I can see you are looking at an obituary on Ancestry.com
referencing a Bage. To me, the citation would require that you
acknowledge that it was from Ancestry.com and the search parameters
that will allow others to locate it, such as the name, where published
originally, date published, etc. These items should be taken from the
item viewed not the ones you used for the search, it can be different.
Many of these issues are being foisted off on us because E. S. Mills
says this is the way it should be and we all are jumping on it. Let's

As an after thought I mentioned a birth being reported by someone, usually

event from a marriage in the presence of two people. Of course the
information could be entered in the notes and maybe this inforamtion could
be set up as a citation?

The reason why the witness information field is important to me is that I keep
seeing the same surenames over and over, usually it is a mother or father or
in-law, which is reflective of family interaction, which helps to add life to the
research.

Any thoughts or am I going over ground that has been covered before with
suggestions that have already been offered to Legacy?

[LegacyUG] Events List style reports unsatisfactory

2007-05-10 Thread Beth Gay
Thanks Jenny and Cathy for responding. I have decided to use the
narrative sentences to allow the word wrap and to obtain the format that
I prefer.

I need to alter the sentences for 15 events; I have currently completed 3.

Must say that this changes my outlook somewhat. I had dismissed other
programs because they did not offer a list style for events. Since I now
plan to use these sentences in Legacy to obtain my desired result; I may
return to reexamine the pros and cons of other programs as well.

[LegacyUG] Events List style reports unsatisfactory

2007-05-09 Thread Beth Gay

Hello list,

I really enjoy Legacy and the data input but the output is not working
for me. I chose to use Legacy because it offered the list style for
events as well as narrative but the reports that I have examined are not
useful. The only report that works properly is the chronology report.

Testing the family group sheet and the individual report both reports
cut short my description and render the report useless. The format for
the individual report is not what I wish to have in a list of events.

One example:
In the Legacy program for the event type Associates I have the date and
location entered and fact description is entered as : Neighbors: William
Barker William Parry.

In the individual report this translates to:
Associates, Neighbors: Richard Tree and William Spencer, 10 Feb 1636/37
in James City County, V~

This one of my shortest fact descriptions so you can understand that
several do not even show the date or location.

My preference would be to have the date shown after the event type.

I will report this as a bug; but wanted to alert anyone considering
Legacy for the list option.

Best regards,

B. G.

Ron and Jennie,

Thanks for responding. I am creating a Family Group Record in the Deluxe
version 6.0.0.118. When I entered data into the event description field,
some of my descriptions contain the maximum allowed by this program.
Another words you type in this field until the program forces you to stop.

Now I am attempting to output the data into a Family Group report. I am
using the list option for events. Under events I have the columns name,
description, date and location. The description does not fit in the small
box created for it in the first line, but Legacy does allow the description
to be printed on the next line. I probably am exceeding the page width, but
exactly which column would you leave out and how. It would seem to me that
another line should be allowed for the description to allow one to output
what one has typed in.

My point is that surely if Legacy allows one to enter a maximum # of
Characters in the description field; it also allows you to output them in
this report but I do not find a way. If I change the left and right margin
to zero, not really desirable, the text is still truncated and if I change
the font to 8 and the page to landscape I still get truncated text.

C. G. said it worked with the newest version, so what am I doing wrong?

the small box created for it in the first line, but Legacy does allow
the description to be printed on the next line. I probably am
exceeding the page width, but exactly which column would you leave out
and how. It would seem to me that another line should be allowed for
the description to allow one to output what one has typed in.

My point is that surely if Legacy allows one to enter a maximum # of
Characters in the description field; it also allows you to output them
in this report but I do not find a way. If I change the left and right
margin to zero, not really desirable, the text is still truncated and
if I change the font to 8 and the page to landscape I still get
truncated

text.

 C. G. said it worked with the newest version, so what am I doing
wrong?

 Best regards,
 Beth G.

Hi Cathy,

Thanks, swapping the name worked like a charm and thanks for the
reminder about copying the source to the clipboard from the Assigned
sources window.

If you swap the Alt name with the Main Name, (see button on the Alt

If you want the 1900 Census as source to both the Main Name and the
Alt Name, then open the Assigned Sources (click the books icon on
Family View), highlight the source and use the Copy to Source
Clipboard button to copy it back to the Source Clipboard and then
attach it to the other name.

discovered today another function that would be useful, unless I have
missed something. I am entering data in a research file as I discover
new data. As an example, from the 1900 census I entered the name
Earnest. Later in my research, I found the WWI draft registration for
this person and his name is spelled Ernest. Now I wish to change his
name to Ernest and change Earnest to the alternate spelling. I can
certainly do this, but if I could copy the previous citation for the
1900 census, I would not have to retype the citation for the
alternate name entry. Have I missed something? If not does anyone
else consider adding this function helpful?

If in the Child Status, then you need to include Child Status in the
report options

See the Include Tab of the Report Options.

Comments in the Compiler information?
They don't appear to be included. I'm not sure whether this is by
design. Why not put in a bug report or suggestion re this?
A work around: The compiler information is printed as a one line
footer - if you've ticked the option to include. If you put your
comment in the Address section it prints.

Footnotes are not available at this time.

Thanks Ron,

I will use the option you suggested until the formatting codes are
removed from the text. The spell checker does indeed ignore the

logical to include the codes in text for spell checking.

As far as I can see what is happening is that the Spell Checker is trying to change a

Case Sensitive (which is set by default) then the formatting codes do not
show.

The side effect of this is, of course, that, to quote the Help Files, canada will not

The file ID assistant is another story. When you use a name + number,

this same name + number show up multiple times in the list and if so why?

I have tried alternate entries, such as Frederick Thompson, 1 Nancy
Coker; Frederick Thompson Nancy Coker; and Frederick Thompson Nancy
Coker, 1. The same file name repeats itself on the list for each
occasion that I reference it.

Is this the way it is designed?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy test help please

2006-09-15 Thread Beth Gay
Hi Cathy,

I shutdown my laptop last night. Reopened tonight and the notes are not
there. I am sure that you cannot copy part of a file; but the notes are not
appearing in Legacy. These are the notes that were in the original file. If
I type new notes in the file on my laptop they still appear. Yes, my
problems with Legacy on my desktop seem to be memory related; my desktop and
laptop have plenty of memory, seems to do with how Legacy is handling the
memory. In particular on the desktop the Legacy file ole32.dll seems to be
part of the problem.

 Hi Beth,
Have you tried closing Legacy and reopening?
Have you tried restarting your laptop?

The notes in Legacy are not dependent on having a Word processor
installed.
If you actually copied the Legacy file, the notes will be there. You
can't copy part of a file.

Sometimes people report problem seeing the notes. I think this is
memory related - which is why restarting your laptop may solve the
problem.

Let us know if this solves it.

[LegacyUG] Problems with Legacy

2006-08-14 Thread Beth Gay
Dear list,

Just wondering how many Legacy users run Legacy routinely without any
problems whatsover.
Legacy has never liked my computer. I would really like to continue using
Legacy but get tired of reinstalling, deleting files etc.
If anyone is running Legacy using Windows 2000 Professional please contact
me off list for troubleshooting.

I thought I had my problems resolved but now have reappeared for an unknown
reason. Not unusual with computers. And no I have not contacted support this
time, I already know the routine and am tired of uninstalling, etc.

Kindest regards,
Beth G.

Hi C. J.,

I like your address Huskies4 and your reference to Armstrong; however I do

Anyway, I don't think you should have to reinstall at all. Thanks for the

I have to reinstall every 10-12 times I run the program. The screen
does not resize properly, and the instructions on the Legacy help page
do not work for me to correct this problem. I'm using Windows XP.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering children when unknown which of the 2 spouses are the parent

2006-08-13 Thread Beth Gay
Thanks Cathy,

I switch programs depending on my goals; but for now Legacy is the one. I am
entering all of my research into one program and Legacy has the best data
entry for preliminary research, other than some very complicated programs. I
also do not like to use the narrative sentences for other than basic facts
and Legacy gives me that option.

It would be helpful to have some indication on the Family View or the
Pedigree View of the Child-Parent Relationship; but I have not found that
option. I will enter a notation either with the spouse's name or one of the
other name fields. I have not found all of the features available in Legacy
so if I can display the child-parent relationship on the Family view or
Pedigree view let me know.

Thanks so much for you assistance.

 Other reports can.

 Hi Beth,
Using the Child-Parent relationship, is a great idea. You can add
other categories like Unproven to the default list.

However, for major lines in my tree, I like to add something to the
name so it's obvious on the Family View that the relationships aren't
proven.
If you don't want your addition to the name to print in reports, you
can put it in privacy brackets.

[LegacyUG] Event Clipboard

Great feature. Not only does the event clipboard copy and paste the event;
it also copies the source and citation. Thanks to Legacy for this feature. I
have the Deluxe edition; but according to the help section this feature is
available on the Standard as well.
Very useful when you have multiple people in your database involved in the
same event.
Thanks Legacy.

to many of the lists for a number of years and never had any problems. My
thoughts were the same as Dave's; would solve the digest problem and other
problems. Sorry that you experienced problems Mary.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Standard and Deluxe combined

2006-07-05 Thread Beth Gay
I know that I sent this message several days ago, but have been off list. I
did read the replies on the archives. One reply from Cathy indicated that I
could get a list of facts in reports rather than the narrative sentences. I
only find this available in the event report.

Again I ask is there anyway to combine the 2 programs? I want Legacy
Standard regarding the fact entry and fact lists in all reports and Legacy
Deluxe for the other features.

I dislike the narrative sentences so don't bother to tell me that I can
override etc. I am not looking for a report with manufactured narrative
sentences. Not trying to offend anyone but it seems that on every forum when
I enter a query regarding a non-narrative program, everyone is always very
helpful about suggesting programs with the sentences and very few have
decent reports with fact list.

Can one have Legacy Standard and Deluxe on the same computer?

Kindest regards,
Beth G.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Standard and Legacy Deluxe

2006-07-01 Thread Beth Gay
Dear List,

I have Legacy Deluxe but dislike the narrative fact sentences. As I recall
Legacy standard does not have the fact sentences. Is there a method to
combine the two to my liking? If I revert to Legacy standard I lose certain
features. With Legacy standard can I produce a descendant or ancestry report
that includes notes, sources, and a list of facts.

With Legacy Deluxe, the only report that I have found that has the option to
use a list of facts vs. sentences is the Event report.

Kindest regards,
Beth g.
