Ruth,

Alphabetical by source name. I'm using the latest version of Legacy
Deluxe (7.0.0.109) and choosing the "List Style Format".

I don't believe that is true. I only have Master Sources - I do not
ever fill in the information on the source detail (an avowed
splitter). All of my FID's are entered on the Master Source Record
screen. When I print the Source Citation Report and tick the box to
"Include the source detail file ID" - ALL of my FID's are printed in
the report.

That's only for Source Detail File ID. The OP referred to Master

There is no tab called Master.

If you are referring to View>Master Lists> Event> That only brings up

I believe what Keith (and I ) are looking for is a report that lists
every who has data in the burial address or burial notes or burial

Anyone found a way to search for those with a particular burial

city-county-state-country type record) I would like a list of all
buried in three cemeteries relatively close to each other so that I
might visit for photos - but I cannot remember which dozen or so

Kirsten,

I know that there is a later post from you than this one, but I'm having a

few problems at present and I'm not sure I can get to it easily!

However, one of the problems was that when I started Legacy up it decided to

add to them by resetting everything to its defaults. During the process
rectification I realised why you are getting "someone" and I am not.

Going through the marriage, partner set-up I noticed something that I had

forgotten. In the phrases to be printed in reports where a spouse/partner is
unkown are the phrases "married someone" and "had a relationship
with someone". I had deleted them a long time ago and forgotten all about
it - I suggest that you do the same - delete them that is, not forget :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] File names format

2008-08-05 Thread Bob Janice
Not true. Windows is perfectly happy to use filenames that contain
spaces. Most of the pictures that I have attached to people, events,
sources, etc. in Legacy contain spaces. For example, I routinely use
file names of the type "Bob Janice - Birth Certificate.jpg". Windows
and Legacy have absolutely no problems with this construct.

As far as using these file names when creating web pages from Legacy -
all you have to do is check off the box "Convert to lowercase letters"
on the "Formatting" tab when you choose the "Web Page Creation" option
from Legacy. Legacy will then automatically convert the file names to
the form "bob_janice_-_birth_certificate.jpg" when generating your web
pages. I've been doing this for several years now with no problems when
creating Descendant web pages.

Both Ron and Dave are correct in their comments about the possibility of
confusion when images with spaces are included in web pages. Since most
web servers use some form of Apache as the underlying control program
for the web it may cause some problems since Apache (and Linux or Unix)
are case and character sensitive. Getting rid of the spaces and
uppercase letters is probably the safest route - luckily, Legacy can do
this for you.

Bob

Barrie Smart wrote:
Windows won't look at a filename with spaces - therefore the

Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do Problem

Carol,

Just tried creating a new to-do item from the individuals screen. I was
able to create it, edit it, and finally delete it without any problems
what-so-ever. It works fine on my machine. I know this doesn't help
you solve your problem but at least you now know that the to-do creation
routine in Legacy is working fine. It would appear that the something
is not quite right with your Legacy install or possibly your data file
has something in it that is causing the problem (and not being picked up
by file maintenance).

Hi,

Have uncovered a problem that "locks-up" Legacy which was caused when I made
a error entering a "To-Do" item for an Individual's information screen.
Here's what I did:
1. Entered a "To-Do" item from the "Individual's Information" screen
2. Forgot to enter a anything in the "Task Needing to be Done" section, and
attempted to save the "To-Do".
3. The program "warned me" of the error, and I then added Text to the "Task
Needing to be Done" Section, and saved it.
4. Then I noticed that the "To-Do" icon was "colored", and indicated "0"
items.
5. When I clicked on the icon, then Upper menus and Icons at the top of the
Legacy window when blank, and the program stopped functioning. The only way
I could shut in down was to reboot the computer.
6. I ran the "Check/Repair" but it didn't help.

I was going to update my family web pages today and ran into a slight
problem. I am using Legacy 7 Deluxe (latest build - 7.0.0.53) and
created the web pages (Descendant Style) in my usual way. I checked off
the boxes to create a surname index and a name list. To my surprise
both the surname index (surname.htm) and name list (names.htm) were
blank!!

After a little investigating I discovered that these pages were blank
ONLY if I had marked at least one individual as "Invisible" using the
new privacy settings in version 7. If I make the individual "Not
Private" then the surname index and name list are generated correctly.

Can anyone else duplicate this apparent problem?? If it can be
confirmed by someone else I'll submit a bug report - if not then maybe
something is not quite right with my database . . .

Thanks for any help.

I've read that Internet Explorer is required for some of the new Legacy
features. If you have one of several Norton products and use IE7 to access
Ancestry.com, either directly or via Legacy, you may find screens or digital
images freezing or refusing to load or shut down.. This is not a Legacy
problem but is a conflict between IE7 and Norton. If you have a combination
of IE7 and a Norton product and notice these problems, they can most easily
be corrected via an online chat with Norton/Symantec.

Hope this may help someone and avoid complaints to the LUG list.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re tiff format

2008-04-04 Thread Bob Janice

I use TIF format almost exclusively for the images I attach in Legacy
(census, scans of documents, photographs, etc.). Most of these files
are way over 200KB - in fact they are all in the 3-5 MB range. I have
never had a problem with Legacy handling, saving, or displaying these
images. They all print fine, display in the program with no problem,
and export very nicely when I create html web pages.

My computer is running Windows XP (SP2) and has 2GB of RAM. Not the
most powerful one around but it gets the job done.

2. Make a copy in .tif format, make changes as needed and then make it as
small as possible with the detail I need.
3. When finished I save it to .jpg in a special legacy picture folder that

is what I attach to Legacy. In reports Legacy can only print a picture about
the size of a large postage stamp.

Just how I do it.

C:\Legacy\Data you will find that Legacy didn't backup your file. I
eventually installed an older version of Legacy (6.0.0.0) over the new one
and the backup problem was immediately rectified. However, the general
information screen showed that I was still on version 6.0.0.188 and that I
was still using the latest update. There's something funny going on here!!
Shouldn't the general information screen tell me that I was using the older
version and not the newer one? I'll leave this one for the experts to figure
out. Meanwhile I'm just glad that I can now create backups again. When the
programmers have fixed up the problem with the newest update I will then
download the new update and try again :-)

This build is not keep the "exclude" from the problems report for the
above. Can another test this out? The way to check that this is not
holding, is to go back to the individual that was marked and then
check is no longer there.

Here is a question that I have put-off asking but all this talk of sources
makes me ask it. I have been interested in family history for about 45
years and a lot of information is on bits of paper, charts inherited, etc.
I have used a number of family history programmes on computer but now use
Legacy, having previously used Reunion. And I now have to admit that
virtually nothing is sourced on Legacy!!

How can I realistically begin to address this problem with over 3000
people in the file? I have tried to append sources but find it tedious
and confusing to fill in the source data and usually just give up. I do
realise that this makes my work sadly inadequate as serious information.

Would it be a start to try to get my head around sourcing the non-standard
information. In other words, if the data comes from a standard birth,
marriage or death certificate or parish register then leave it un-sourced
and concentrate on those bits of information found in other places - for
example a local trade directory or Will or Army record?

Any advice please?

Options -> Customize -> Colors . . . . look in the middle of the screen

I had printed out the index for those people who'll be in the .gedcom

But that turns out to be cumbersome, and I've got about 100 people I

Re: [LegacyUG] Published a book using Legacy (long)

2007-11-30 Thread Bob Janice
Excellent information about putting all the elements together for a
book. I'm sure all of your family will be thrilled. Thanks for sharing
it all . . .

Bob

Susan Daily wrote:

I just received from the printer two copies of the paperback version
of my first published family history book. I would like to encourage
those of you who have been researching forever like me to think about
getting it into book format, even if it is for your own enjoyment. (I
am an amateur genealogist.)

This is how I did it. I started with a family story that I discovered
had a flaw. So that made me want to learn more about where this person
came from, and who his people were. I thought that if I traced all of
his descendants I might meet someone who had reached further back up
the tree than I did. Thus led to two years of fairly intensive
research into all the family members that descended from this person's
great grandfather. The result to date is 526 descendants (including
adoptees) in eight generations. (And no, I never did meet another
genealogist.)

Using Legacy, I entered all the data as I found it, sourcing it as I
went along. I attached pictures to people or events at their normal
size for the most part (being too lazy to resize, but this worked out
in the RTF file).

At some point I had to stop entering data and export into a document
to begin my book. This is a hard decision to make, but you will learn
that you can do it, and still add information even up to the last
minute. I used Descendants Book Report, with these settings: Register
format, Main entries for all individuals, no title page, Name Index
checking off top four items; I included Child status so that the words
(Twin) or (Adopted) would appear next to the child's name under their
parents, age at death, cause of death, marriage status, all events,
all notes for all people, all private notes, printing the brackets so
they would stand out.

Under pictures, I made sure to include "Embed the Pictures in the
file" and all photos. I included the captions and descriptions, but no
extra formatting. I set my fonts to size 12 which is what most books
recommend, especially if you will have older readers. I included
sources, printing industry standard, and formatted per the master
source formatting option. I did not do headers or footers, choosing to
do that later in the document.

I then selected Rich Text File and saved it to my desktop. Using
Microsoft Word, I opened up the file and immediately saved it as a DOC
file. I installed the Macros previously discussed in the Archives to
format the photograph captions. It worked beautifully. I chose not to
run the second macro, to link caption to the picture, because instead
I inserted text boxes under the pictures and pasted the captions
inside. You do have to make sure you go to (in Word) Edit-Links to
make sure the photos are within the document and not linked. You may
want to wait until you are ready to upload to do this, to keep your
file size small and working efficiently.

Then I did some serious editing. I only used this Legacy output as a
starting point. I made it more of a narrative, writing, "John lived in
Drumna all of his life, and raised his children there," instead of the
Legacy output, "He resided from 1823 to 1890 in Drumna." This takes a
lot of time, so plan accordingly. You can start formatting your
pictures by size, but wait until the very end to worry about their
position on a page. Otherwise you will go crazy moving them every time
you add something new early on in the book. The industry also
recommends that you have a nice spacing between lines, but I had so
much text, that I chose to use "Exactly 14pt" for my spacing. This
allows the source numbers to show without crowding, and keeps all the
lines spaced the same. The downside is your photos will also start
appearing as only 14pt high, so you have to either format their line
to be single space or change the photo so that it is
Layout-Wrapping-Square with text.

If I got new information as I was doing this formatting, I simply
added a new line to the source list, and used that number, even if it
was out of order. Try to remember to add the information to Legacy at
the same time, or to the Legacy to do list.

I also indexed my book completely, using the index facility provided
by Word. It worked really well. I kept everything in one index, which
was easy and I think looks much better than having more than one
index. Indexing took me about a week. It was a good opportunity to
proofread once again. Be sure to do a spell check when you are all
done.

My book has three parts, four appendixes, source list, index, and
three extra blank pages called "Additions and Corrections." Part I is
a narrative discussing the goal of my search, my findings, my
conclusions, and other interesting details like common medical
ailments and physical resemblances. Part II is a 5-generation chart
generated by Legacy using the Descendant Chart report, No birth-death
dates, Ge

June 05, 2007
Ancestry searching error from within Legacy
Ancestry.com has recently made changes to
the way customers search
their site. These changes have effected Legacy's ability to
automatically search for a person in their databases. Continue reading
for the workaround

For example, click on the Search menu from within Legacy, then click
on Search Internet for Current Person. You can now choose which
genealogy web site to search. If Ancestry.com
 is selected, click on
the Search button. Normally Legacy would then search Ancestry for the
currently-highlighted individual and display the results. Because of
the changes made by Ancestry, you will now receive an error message.

Fortunately, Legacy has the ability to create and modify the "search
strings" that are used to perform these automated searches. The
" Ancestry.com " search can easily be
modified by following these steps:

Once you are on the "Search the Internet" screen, click on the
Customize Searches button.
Click on the Select button next to Ancestry.com
Click once on Ancestry.com , and click on
the Edit button.
In the field the currently begins with http://service.bfast.com
...,
replace all of the text in this field with this new link:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=0&tips=0&gsfn=[GivenNames]&gsln=[Surname]&sx=&gs1co=1%2cAll+Countries&gs1pl=1%2c+&year=[BirthYear]&yearend=[DeathYear]&sbo=0&sbor=&ufr=0&wp=4%3b_8002%3b_8003&srchb=r&prox=1&db=&ti=0&ti.si=0&gl=allgs&gss=ansmp&so=1&o_iid=21416&o_lid=21416

Click Save, click Select, click Close, now click Search.
Legacy's Research Guidance section also has links to individual
databases at Ancestry.com . For example, on
the Preliminary Survey tab,
clicking on the Local Histories tab provides an automated listing of
local/county histories of the areas in which your ancestor lived. Some
of these books are available online. If you click on the Online
button
for books that are available at Ancestry, you will still be presented
with Ancestry's error message. Currently, there is not a way to update
the link. However, the book is still available at Ancestry, you will
just have to temporarily manually look it up on their site.

If you have any questions about performing automated searches, please
don't hesitate to contact our support team. We will continue to work
hard to provide a future update that will correct these links, but
for
those who want the immediate fix, please follow the steps above.

it meant something else, then no shadowed boxes are showing up to

Can anyone verify?

Jenny I don't know either! I have been entering Q#, ### (with the
comma)
since Legacy allowed the quarter dates - the system has never
alerted me to
"bad dates". However, today was the first time I used that format
for a
death date (previously only used it for births and marriages).
When I ran a
Potential Problems report (which I always run after data entry) it
flagged
the newly entered death date as a "bad date". I then did as Cathy
suggested
and ran a Potential Problems report selecting "All Records" - it
flagged
nothing except for the death date I had entered today.

Ron has explained that the format I *should* be using is
month[space]Q[space]year, so I think it best if I change to that
format - I
don't have all that many, maybe 30 or so. I haven't yet run
reports (except
for the Potential Problems), so I'm not sure if there may be
problems just
waiting to pop out

Incidentally, the flagged person on my database was the individual
that the
date related to, not a son or daughter.

Re: [LegacyUG] Line on Individual report

2007-02-19 Thread Bob Janice

Nick,

Was playing around some more - I think I can repeat your problem.

When the "Cause of Death" is at the very bottom of the page, a vertical
line does cut through the events/description heading for the following
page. Subsequent pages don't have the vertical line.

If the same situation is true for your report (cause of death at the
very bottom of a page) maybe try playing with the report (i.e.
add/subtract event pictures, etc.) to see if it is a placement issue.
Let me know how it turns out.

Re: [LegacyUG] One tested method of organizing files ...a bit more still

2007-01-04 Thread Bob Janice

Gary,

Not sure what you mean when you say ". . . the Legacy feature that
automatically assigns the next sequential FileID can not be used when
prefacing the FileID with a letter."

I routinely use "FID" as my FileID format (i.e. FID0001, FID0254,
etc.). When assigning a new FileID to a source I always click the
"Select+1" button in the FileID Assistant Screen and Legacy
automatically assigns the next sequential FID number (including the
preface FID). This occurs with no problem even though the FileID is
prefaced with a series of letters (in this case FID).

I think I'm missing something here in your discussion but not sure what

category in my opinion outweighs the benefit of automatically assigned
sequential FileIDs. I manually assign the next sequential FileID for my
record categories. This is made easy by just looking at what my last
number was for that category.

Without the use of a category prefix, I don't know if I'm looking for a
wedding napkin or old uncle Joe's banjo.

In an ideal world the program would provide a customized option to use
category prefixes. Then automatically assign the next sequential FileID
number when that prefix is used. I don't see that happening.

Whether you choose to use category prefixes or not, your method of
filing and use of FileIDs are right on.

Gary,

I tried using a letter in front of the number for my adoptive family
database so that when I'm gone that database could be willed to
descendants
of that family and separated by my children easily. The problem is that
then
the ability to see what the next number is in "file id" in Legacy is
lost,
so I discarded that and do not put a letter in front of anything.

An alphabetical report would be helpful. Right now I also have a
database in
Works where I can search on any field and within fields (ie, family name

field with several names in it separated by two spaces) to find sources
and
info. This way the adoptive family sources could be separated via this

sort.

Jean's points are dead on. Excerpts below.

Only one suggestion, assign records to categories before assigning

File

Numbers. Thus, census records would be C0001, newspaper articles

would

be N0001, photographs would be P0001, and so on. Just as would be

done

in a library system. I can provide more on categories if requested.

A record filing system is a record filing system. It is a system for
filing and retrieving records. Don't make it be something it's not,
it's not for people identification and association. That's best

handled

by programs like Legacy.

Please join me in lobbying Legacy to add a report for File Numbers
sorted alphabetically which would list LName, FName/MI, FileNumber,
Date, Caption, and Description.

Gene,

I think what Ron meant was are they stored in the Master Location list,
in the Event Address list, etc. Without knowing _where_ you have stored
the cemetery names it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to

Re: [LegacyUG] CDs and Gedcoms and Passage Express

2006-12-30 Thread Bob Janice

Tracey,

Passage Express cannot open GEDcom files natively - it needs GENViewer.
Go to the "Options" menu in Passage Express and then click on "File
Readers". You should see GENViewer Lite listed as the reader for GEDcom
files. If not simply click the Add button, navigate to where it is on
your computer and add it. When you create the CD or DVD GENViewer Lite
should then automatically be included on the CD.

I am sure this has been addressed before, but I have been unable

Is there a way to vote on changes that have been requested by
users thru the
"Suggest a new feature" link? (Or for that matter, even view what has
already been submitted.) If we could, I think we should be able to
see less
carping about the programmers giving us the features they want and
not
necessarily what we really want or think we need.

Several suggestions have been made over the years, for example, I
am VERY
interested in seeing the ability to source separate parts of an
event (i.e.,
date, place, note, etc.). I just hate to keep nagging about it on
the list!

Re: [LegacyUG] Book-Descendant report problem with creating PDF or RTF format

2006-12-19 Thread Bob Janice

Beth,

After choosing "PDF" or "RTF" as your output option and clicking the
"Create" button, did you give the file a name?? If you didn't then the
printer icon in Legacy just keeps "spinning its wheels' and no report is
ever produced. Sounds simplistic but I (and others) have gotten caught
in this mistake. Hopefully this helps.

Leo - If you go to the Master Location List, highlight one of the
locations, and click "Edit" you will get a window that not only allows
you to edit the name of the location, but also contains a "Notes" window
for that location where you can input any type of alternate information
about that location that you want. I'm pretty sure this is what Glenn
was talking about.

the location on each individual person. If there was a Notes Section
or an AKA Section in the Master Location List then you would only have
to enter the information on the name change once, then each time that
you use that location it would show up that on a given date the
community had changed it's name.

You can put notes in the location under the master locations list.

I was wondering what everyone else does when they are entering the place
name of a community where a person was born and they find out that the
communities name had been changed from what it was called back when the
person was born. I know that I can enter the name change in the the
notes

section along with the date that it was changed, but if I had a lot of
people from the same community then that would require a lot of
additional

typing.
I think that it would be beneficial to have an AKA field attached to the
master location list so that I could enter an earlier name for the
community

as an AKA, then I could place the present day name of the community in
Master Location.
Any suggestions.

Re: [LegacyUG] Map My Family Tree - how do I recover my registration key?

2006-12-12 Thread Bob Janice

Is it just me or has this thread gone to nowhere and back??

Dora Smith wrote:
Actually, it's puzzling that we would be discussing Map My Family Tree
- and this is what confused me. Rootsmagic (Not Millenia, which is
who I thought developed it) came out with a better program called
Family Atlas alot more recently. I just opened the one that is
currently and recently installed on my computer, which is Family
Atlas, and since I hadn't used it yet it asked for the registration
key. Registration key is in the actual case that it came in.

Thanks for setting me straight, Ron. You saved me ALOT of time. :)

Sherie was very helpful - given her company doesn't even make the
product, LOL!And was I told she works in sales?

Map my Family Tree is made by Progeny, not Millenia.

So if we're discussing Map My Family Tree in such detail, why aren't
we discussing Family Atlas? It's a better program. It finds actual
places. Not quite as well as Encarta atlas and Google Earth do, and it
has some bugs, like it insisted on calling the place my mother in
law's paternal line emigrant ancestor came from "St. Jacques", which
is the name of hte church, instead of the name of hte town. It put
me through a LONG line of matching the old style place names to the
new province names, and some of the places it couldn't find but I
found perfectly well in Google Earth, I didn't happen to know offhand
where they are. Most annoying bug is it couldn't find Ile d'Orleans
in Quebec, which is too significant a place to not be able to find.
Biggest problem is that despite it saying different on the advertising
it too won't let you select which events you want to map, atleast not
by any method I can find.It also doesn't put any sort of logical
place markers on the map, like province or state names, the location
of the city of Paris, even though quite a number of people were from
there (lots of dots but no place name), and it wouldn't label La
Rochelle, a major port that sent many emigrants to Quebec, even though
quite alot of people were from there. It labelled a small village
nearby, but not La Rochelle. Mind you, it lets you add text, so the
places are labelled on the map I made, but that was too stupid. The
major city of Rouen is still not labelled because I don't happen to
know exactly where it is in the nest of dots.

But all this is far better than Map My Family Tree, which ever found
and mapped only three ancestral places, for 220 people.

This one was so weird I checked - and he's right. We've been
discussing Map My Family Tree like it's Millenia's, and that's almost
certainly why I purchased it, but it isn't Millenia's. It's Progeny's.

I wonder if that means it should do much of anything.

If you didn't purchase the software through Millennia, why would you
even begin
to ask about your registration key on this list? Common sense would
dictate

that you go to the source of your purchase.

Since Millennia has not yet sold this software from our online

probably begin selling it in the next couple of days.

Re: [LegacyUG] organizing notebooks

2006-12-09 Thread Bob Janice

Janis,

I put all my documents in the acid-free mylar sleeves you mentioned. I
have a Dymo LetraTag QX50 label maker that I use to make two labels for
each item. The first label is the MRIN number for the particular
individual that the document refers to, the second label is the FID
number that I ask Legacy to assign for me. The documents then get filed
first by the MRIN number and then, within each MRIN section, the FID number.

Wayne,

Sorry for my previous confusing post. Looking again at what I wrote I
should have said to click the "Zoom" button located on the right-hand
side of the Notes window. Is yours set to "Auto"?? If it is try
setting it to something like 12 or 14 and then click save - that should
make the notes readable again. Hope this helps . . .

Dora,

What is the "tag system of data entry"??? and what does "You have to
remember that with Legacy you don't use the search feature to search . .
. " mean??I find both statements confusing!! I'm not aware of using
tags for data entry and what exactly do you use the "Search" feature in
Legacy for if not for searching??

Bob

Dora Smith wrote:
Oh. Grin. But seriously, Legacy slow down a computer with plenty of
resources, like mine.

Also, in my experience, size of a program is directly inversely
related to how efficiently it runs. In fact, I was actually taught
that in computer science, and my sister, who is now a project manager
for IBM, staunchly agreed with it.I really think that Legacy's
biggest problem is the needlessly complicated way it structures
data. It takes alot of unnecessary code, and alot of computer
resources, to structure data in complicated ways that can and should
be structured in simple ways.

If you don't believe me, look at the relative size, data structure,
and memory usage of PAF.

If it weren't that Legacy is filling in for critical shortcomings in
most other genealogical software, I'd actually rate it as a middling
good program, and I'd also probably not use it.The tag system of
data entry and editing is itself a serious shortcoming, enough to
prevent people from using it for data entry and major editing, and I
also prefer to export to my other programs from PAF because I know
other programs will import its output. If Rootsmagic ever gets its
act together, I'll probably use it instead.

I'm only using Legacy at this time because after the excellent job PAF
Companion did of putting all the information in my genealogical
reports and formatting them straightforwardly, it strangely reverts to
not listing multiple spouses and their children on its web pages.

Legacy even makes a complex task of answering someone's question on
the black sheep list about whether emigrant John Balch had a daughter
named Abigail. Legacy would have taken a long time to load, three
times as long to find Abigail Balch, and then it takes six steps to
close the program. You have to remember that with Legacy you don't use
the search feature to search, which is never easy. In Legacy you use
view to search even though it has a search feature. Even if you know
the program well this is confusing. You have to tell it six times
that you do want to close the program and you don't want to back up
this and that, before it will let you close. You have to tell it
you did not lie when you told it to close! With PAF, looking up the
information just took exactly 30 seconds.

Legacy runs easily on 256MB of RAM even with a large graphic program
(The GIMP) running at the same time together with other programs. I
often run between 7 and 10 programs concurrently with Legacy. It is
the download size for people on dial-up that I was referring to
although it is true that the current Legacy version can cause
problems on smaller computers running Windows 9x.

It is true that Legacy is getting too big to run on many peoples'
computers; in fact, many peoples' computers don't even meet its
minimum system requirements for such features as amount of RAM
space, which is some huge amount like 500 megs. My computer has
that much, but it was added on by a computer savvy sister who
purchased it for me. When making my web sites, my CPU temperature
often rises to 55 degrees!Teh program uses 35 megs of physical
memory, or something, which is alot; PAF uses only about 9 megs.
That's enough to slow down other things that are open, like PAF,
which is usually open if I'm doing a genealogy project, and e-mail,
or Internet Explorer.

Genbox does have a lot of interesting features, and in its comparison

it showed a lot of features it had that Legacy did not.

Would someone more familiar with Genbox, compare it with Legacy,
especially

in what features Genbox is inferior to Legacy. (The Legacy comparison
webpage does not mention Genbox).

I would suggest that another major problem is the inability to link

[LegacyUG] IE7

2006-11-07 Thread Bob Janice
Now that the initial release of IE7 has been finalized and people have
begun using it, I was wondering if there are any issues that we, as
users of Legacy, need to be aware of? I know that Legacy uses the IE
engine when displaying the "Legacy Home" tab and wanted to make sure
that there were no surprises when going from IE6 to IE7.

Thanks,

Bob

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Spyware

2006-10-29 Thread Bob Janice

Dale,

I have run SpyBot Search & Destroy, AdAware, SpywareBlaster, Spy
Sweeper, SUPERAntiSpyware, Windows Defender, and a-Squared Free on my
system (yeah I know I'm paranoid!). All of the above have run with
Legacy fully installed and operational. I have _never_ had any of the
above spyware programs hit on any Legacy system or data file. I'm sure
that your program is just giving you a false positive. I would report
it to the authors as a "false positive" and have them adjust their
spyware definition file.

Dale Carmack wrote:

I am wondering is anyone else is having the same issue with Legacy and

Power Spy (which is labeled a Severe Risk Keylogger program). The
description given by my Spyware program is "Power Spy is a commercial
keylogger. It captures all keystrokes and also takes screenshots in order to
spy on the user."

When I removed it I eventually discovered that my Legacy 6.0 Program stopped
working as it would crash on startup and close. I had to reinstall Legacy
to make it work again. The next Spyware scan detected Power Spy again and
that's when I discovered it was being installed when Legacy 6.0 is
installed.

Why is Legacy installing Spyware and how can I remove it and still keep
Legacy operating?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [LegacyUG] Passage Express

2006-10-01 Thread Bob Janice

Jane,

Not sure I understand your question - Passage Express is simply
_presentation_ software. If you want to put together a CD/DVD with
genealogical data (web pages, family group sheets, descendant reports,
photos, etc.) then you will still need a genealogy program (obviously
preferably Legacy!) to provide the data.

Hi Ken,

I purchased the paid deluxe version several months ago (before the free
version came out as part of the latest Legacy update) and have been
extremely satisfied with it. I made several CD's with family history
information (including photos, PDF documents, sound files, sideshows,
and web pages) to distribute to my family in Poland and the US this
summer. They all loved it.

I have just started to play around with the DVD burning capabilities of
the program and so far have encountered no problems. The resulting DVD
plays fine on my home player (both computer and TV) with excellent results.

I have not had any problems whatsoever with audio or video.

Bottom line - I think the program is well written, versatile and a good
value for the money.

Re: [LegacyUG] Web page creation errors

2006-09-17 Thread Bob Janice

Byron,

I know this doesn't help you much, but I just checked my Legacy database
with "Family Group Sheets" web pages, and they were created without any
errors. This would, at least, eliminate the possibility of a "bug" in
the program. I did a quick search with Google for error codes 3201 and
440 and got basically what you stated in your message - "no record
found" (perhaps a more through reading of the Google results would yield
more information).

Looks like you tried everything normally recommended on this group. One
question - when you exported/imported your database did you tell Legacy
to "Fill all existing abandoned RINs/MRINs"* *?? I ask this only because
it is stated on the Legacy problem pages as a possible solution for
errors in creating web pages.

Good luck,

Bob

Re: [LegacyUG] Passage Express & Legacy website creation tools

2006-09-04 Thread Bob Janice

Hi Tracy,

I have the "Deluxe" version of Passage Express and have been able to
incorporate the web pages created by Legacy into it with no problems.
The only change I had to make from my "normal" procedure was to tell
Legacy not to put any pictures into a different directory than the HTML
pages. Once the pages have been generated, use the "import folder"
procedure in Passage Express to import the web page directory into your
PE project. There may be a easier way of doing it but the above
process works great for me.

specifically for an autorun CD and learning Passage Express.

Thanks Frank,

After reading your email in the archives, I contacted my ISP (Cox.net)
and inquired about LegacyFamilyTree.com being on some kind of
"blacklist". They assured me that they do not block emails from any
domain, and suggested that I add LegacyFamilyTree.com to my on-line

Not thinking that adding the address to my contact lists on their

LUG messages again.!! Coincidence?? Maybe - but with the numerous
problems Millenia is having with this list recently who knows . . . . .

Thanks for your idea,

Re: [LegacyUG] individual event screen

2006-06-25 Thread Bob Janice

Arnold,

Very well put. I too would like to have the *option* of sorting by
date. With the large number of users of Legacy, the developers will
never be able to please everyone - however by making most of the
customizations of the program *optional* they can satisfy the needs of
the majority (if not all!) of the users.

I vote for *optionally* having *all* events sorted by date.

Bob

Arnold Sprague wrote:

Myrna,
No one is asking that sorting Events by date be automatic.
Dennis M. Kowallek and Ron Ferguson have chosen to mischaracterize
what we are requesting. And *then* they say what we are asking for is
a poor idea. We are *only* asking for the *option* to sort by date. We
are not attempting to force anything on anyone, as they state we are
doing. They chose to merely react and not read carefully a long post.
As it is now, Events are not sorted at all. They appear in the
order they were entered. Thus the 1910 census is next to the 1850
census but not next to the 1900 census if that is how you entered them.
However, if you go to the Individual's Information window,
click on Options, you will see "Sort Events by Date" and "Sort Events
by Name." The problem with this is that you have to manually change
the order for *every* individual. And once you do that, all dated
Events you later enter appear at either the top or the bottom of the
list of Events, so you have to go back and force another resort by date.

All that we want is for the *option* to have Events listed in
date order. That is, if I enter, in *this* order, three censuses for
1900, 1830, and 1870 as Events, that they will be listed
*chronologically* in the Individual's Information window as follows:

Census 1830
Census 1870
Census 1900

and *not* as follows:

Census 1900
Census 1830
Census 1870

as happens now.

Again, all that we want is the *option* to sort all Events for
all individuals by date in Legacy. We are *not* asking the current
default sort be changed from what it currently is. Dennis M. Kowallek
and Ron Ferguson say that is what we want. It is not. We are only
asking for the *option.*
