Jeff,

Do you want me to send you an example of a Descendant Narrative Report
formatted with events in sentences using the defined sentence structures?

Well, now I can't find that either!
Try this
Click on "Report Options"
Click on the "Format" tab
See the "Event Narrative Format" words in a box on the right column
under "Event Format"
Click on that then select the 4th bullet in the list "Combine all
events into one paragraph".
If this doesn't work, it may be a deluxe edition feature.

Hello Listers

I have been trawling the web for the book Evidence Explained by Elizabeth
Shown Mills and can find it only on USA based websites.

Does that mean that UK bookshops do not think it will sell as it is to USA
centric
Has any UK lister read the book and is it worth getting

Erik,
Go to the foster parents. Click on View - Childrens List. Highlight
the foster child in the list. If you click on Child Status, you can
then "Add" a new status, "foster child" to the list.

In reports, you can print the child status so this appears. There is
also a way to show Child Status in the family view, click on Options -
Customize - View, and in the lower right, "show status" click "on
children".

Having entered the child with the desired parents, right click on the
child and select Children's Settings. With the child highlighted (it
will be if there is only one entered) select from Child Status.

I think the default list for Child Status is Adopted, None, Stillborn or
Twin, but you will see that there is an option to add any other Status
you wish, so you can create Fostered.

RE: [LegacyUG] v7 update to 7.0.0.38

2008-05-24 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
As a commercial software company, with a huge base of existing users craving
the new Legacy 7, I don't think it is unreasonable to ask Millennia to tell
us second class customers exactly when we CAN get Legacy 7 (I mean a date -
not "soon")

The not-possible-for-all-to-download-at-once argument has no validity.
Firstly, professional download services these days can handle thousands and
thousands of concurrent downloads. Secondly, this issue can come as no
surprise to Millennia, and of course they must have thought about how to
handle this. Thirdly, they have to open up for download at some point and if
this was a real issue, what will they do then?

I'm not sure I understand why version 7 hasn't been made available to
"veteran" Legacy users. Just who are these "veteran" Legacy users and why
did I get my free copy of version 7 last week and this self-appointed royal
class didn't?

Another thing that puzzles me is who are these people, such as Cathy, who
seem to attempt to answer every question but who has told me that she's
never even seen the manual for version 7.

SV: [LegacyUG] Not fair Millennia!

2008-05-16 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
Wauuu.. one has to be very careful not to raise any criticism towards
Millennia in this list, or risk being called names like cry baby and other
condescending names. It appears that the majority of the members of this
list are quite happy with legacy 6 and even older versions. Good for you – I
expect you’ll not be upgrading then. I, for one, don’t submit to the common
psychosis that Legacy 6 is simply the best genealogy program on the marked,
and that Millennia is providing the program to the community solely out the
goodness of their harts (it may come as big surprise to some, but they are
in the game for a profit).

Anyway, over the passed years I have been submitting a number of change
requests to Legacy, some of which constitutes a major problem to me, in my
daily use of the program. Even though no promises were given by Millennia,
it is my hope that some of these changes are incorporated into the new
release. That’s why I’m so eager to get the software.

I agree. I've been a user of Legacy for many, many years also. Even though
I was able to attend the conference, I can wait a few weeks until my turn
comes.

It's easy to say - All it takes is __ when you really don't know
what's involved for things to run smoothly. Who gets the blame if there's a
problem with the rollout of the update? It won't be the customer who
couldn't wait. They will all blame the merchant.

It is my understand that they are NOT SHIPPING the software to new
customers. The only place new customers can get it is at the NGS
conference. That doesn't involve any webpages or computer anything else,
just an exchange of product and money. They also can't get the download
version which is less expensive.

I'm sorry for the block caps, and the tone of the above line, but this

is what these messages remind me of, a three year old child whining

Does it REALLY matter if you have the new software a few weeks after

the very first release of it? If you answer yes, ask yourself "why

does it matter?" Is your

have to wait about 21-28 or so days (I'm guessing here, I don't have

any insights)?

Come on, a little perspective is needed here. There are many of us

who have been users of Legacy for quite a while (got Legacy v5.0 in

Please, just take a step back, and have a little patience.

That's true if all we were placing up there was the Standard Edition but
what
fun would that be if you couldn't play with all the cool new Deluxe Edition
features. Also, we would kind of like to sell the Deluxe Edition and make
it
available at the same time as the Standard Edition and we have a bunch of
work
to re-vamp our website, redo our online store, finish up the training
videos,
get CDs, work on press releases, compile mailing list to send out the
announcements (so it's fair) and work on our ordering system to support the
new
products, customer numbers, email lists, etc.

Those who purchase in last 10 months have already paid for Legacy 7.0 Deluxe
and
really deserve to have it first. We want to get Legacy ready and available
to
everyone just as much as you want it. I have just put in about 20 hours of

work and am headed to bed for a couple hours before I get up and do another
20
hour day. We are working hard to get it out to all of you.

Please, it's coming. We ask for just a little more patience and
understanding.

SV: [LegacyUG] events - married or individual??

2008-05-15 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
June,

I'm struggling making the same choice. At first I put all such family events
on the marriage as I do think this is the proper place, in order not to have
the final report filled up with repetitive and redundant information. Then I
discovered that marriage event was not included in some reports (sure hope
this has changed in v7) so I duplicated the family events for each
individual involved in the event. However, I'm not happy with it, and I find
the generated reports annoying to read. I think I'll end up editing the
generated reports by hand in a word processor to make them interesting to
read by others then hardcore genealogist.

I can never quite decide where to place events, census, anything in fact
that happens to a couple once they are a couple; whether to put them on each

individual's page, repeating the info or put the info on the 'marriage'
page. I am not quite sure how differently they show up in reports or
wherever but I think there are some drawbacks to both choices. What do other

folk do (and are happy with???)

Steve,

I would record the letters as sources, transcribing the contents in the text
field or scanning them and attaching them as pictures, or both. The letters
probably contain information about various family members which you would
enter for those individuals and use the letter(s) as sources.

Hope this helps.

Mike, I like the idea of putting the version number first to assist
sorting/reading so here goes.

I have a number of very old letters from my G/Parents that I would like to
document somehow in a general area as distinct from an individuals notes if
possible in Legacy but cannot see how it can be done. I am looking at
"Clooz" as a possibility but would like to try and keep everything within
Legacy to avoid another avenue for a mess to sort out latter, I'm having
enough fun with what I have without creating anything else.

I don't think two lists would be a good idea. Naturally there will topics
only relevant for a particular version - especially v7 during the first time

I think that would be going a bit too OTT, but Valerie has what sounds
like a good idea - one list for Legacy 7 and one for previous versions.

However, the trouble is that many "problems" which are raised by someone
using v7 will be equally relevant to earlier versions, and vice versa.
Just as now there are a few queries about, say, v5 where the answer is
only relevant to v5, but on the whole most topics relate to most
versions, with perhaps more of a divide along de luxe/standard lines.

I guess that means, since I have v6 Deluxe, that the bare upgrade to v7

The upgrade prices will not change. They will be the same as the price of
going from v5 to v6

http://www.legacyfamilytreestore.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=2

Those who still have v5 will have to pay the full price as we ony sell
upgrades for the previous version. v6 to v7.

We can't give you an exact date yet but hopefully by the end of the month or
soon there after.

I really find your comments about Ron highly unfair. I don’t find one rude

You are very wrong in your supposition.

Luc Comeau, who works for Millenium is hard at work perfecting Legacy
Charting - I am a beta tester - is certainly NOT sub-contracted to Progeny
and has nothing to do with them.

Legacy Charting will be a part of Legacy v7 and will also be available as a

product.

We just have to be patient for the next release of the best genealogy

Al,

A clarification: the 'Legacy Charting 7' we are debating here is a Millennia
product and is going to be an integral part of the eternal
soon-to-be-released Legacy 7. 'Legacy Charting Companion' is a Progeny
product and is as such independent of 'Legacy Charting 7'. However, as
Progeny has all the charting technology at hand, perhaps Millennia have
subcontracted the development of 'Legacy Charting 7' to Progeny, but that’s
just me speculating.

Version 7.0, as we've seen so far, lacks many "basic" and "immediate"

I sincerely hope that Legacy Charting development team is reading to these

BTW, will this new version of Legacy Charting Companion also be distributed

Has anybody heard anything about upgrade fees (to owners of previous

I believe they should take into account "regulars" who have purchased

I'm glad to see you have a sense of humor :-)) Reformat brings the chart
back to its initial layout, and all changes are lost (in effect a "Reset").
By 'undo changes', as I'm sure you are aware, I mean only cancel the last
change made to the chart.

> - aligning selected boxes, vertically and horizontally

>> see the tree structures on the left: 3rd down Drag one individual

Not quite was I was looking for. After rearranging a complete chart it can
be rather time consuming to manually align all persons in i.e. one
generation. A much more convenient way would be to select all the persons in
the generation as a group and activate a function called 'align vertically'.
This and a similar function called 'align horizontally' are usually found in
charting program.

> - a colour theme differentiating spouses from blood relatives

>> Themes>4 Gen Colour Coding ?

I assume you are referring to Color > By Generation > Colors 4. Personally I
do prefer generation color coding, but want all "foreign" spouses to stick
out.

Hi Erik,
The Sentence Definitions are saved in the Family File.
You can import Sentence Definitions from one Family File to another
so I'd set up a Family File to store the Sentence Definitions
relevant to both languages.
Note that if you open that file in the wrong language you'll lose
them so make sure you also have backups of these files.
You import Sentence Definitions from the Options button - Import when
viewing any Master List. You choose which master lists you wish to import.

If you have a backup of your family file in the right language, you
could open that with Legacy set to that language and make sure you
name it something else so that it doesn't overwrite your current
Family File. Then you could import from that backup.

I hope that makes sense. It's easier to do than explain, especially
as I'm not 100% today.

I´ve been using Legacy Charting Companion v.2.0.9 for quite a long time.

Just installed version 7.

I´m not able to generate a descendant chart oriented from left-to-right
(only top-bottom).

Does anyone know how to do the trick?

(I believe Erik has sent an e-mail earlier today asking the same question)

Will there be other types of charts and/or reports??

Tks.

SV: SV: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting customization questions

2008-05-03 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
Ron,

I hope you enjoyed your beers - your time off this list is well earned!

No, sorry, the location of the File menu had escaped me. Taking of which (my
favourite hate theme), I would strongly advice all Microsoft Windows program
designers to adhere to the good old fashioned Windows menu standard where
item # one is File, item # two is Edit, somewhere in the middle you have
View and at the end you have Window and Help. Any creativity on the part of
the program designers should in my opinion be invested in the programs
functionality - not in hiding standard functionality in obscure places. BUT
that’s another discussion all together ;-)

Thus uplifted by this opportunity to sound my views on the subject of
"modern GUI design", back to the issue of resizing. Yes, exporting the chart
to a jpg file could be a workaround, but not an attractive one. Let me give
an example. If you have a chart spanning two pages in landscape orientation,
but only 10% of page two is occupied by chart element. In other words, 90%
of page two is blank and needs to be cut out of the jpg image before
printing to allow the chart to fill out the entire page width. What you'll
have to do then is:
- load the exported jpg file in a image editing program
- crop the part with the chart (100+10%)
- save the cropped image (for future reference)
- print the copped image

However, this requires that the printer driver offers the "Fit to page"
function. If not, you'll have to experiment with the dpi setting, until the
cropped image prints out on exactly one page, and my bet is that this is
going to take quite a large number of trails.

The only sensible solution is for Legacy Charting to offer a resizing
function.

Regards
Erik

SV: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting customization questions

2008-05-03 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
Paper orientation issue resolved: the standard Windows File menu is hidden
behind the circular chart icon in the upper left corner and that contains
the Page Setup option that I was looking for.

I'm still missing the resize function though (not the same as the zoom
function that only scales the view)

Ron,

Basically what I'm trying to accomplish is to have a chart span as few pages
of paper as possible.

If, for example, only a small part of a chart expands outside page one,
resizing all chart elements including the text font, can make the chart fit
on one page. In Progeny Legacy Charting Companion, that I have been using
until now, such an on-click resizing function is available and it is very
useful (i simply set the scale factor to e.g. 90% and the entire chart
shrinks 10%).

In regards to paper orientation, Legacy Charting reflects the orientation of
the default printer setting. If I want to change the orientation of a chart
in Legacy Charting I have to change the orientation in the printer settings.
This is of course possible, but a better solution also supported by all
other programs I can think of including Progeny Legacy Charting Companion,
is to have the program control the orientation, i.e. when I print a text
document from Microsoft Word it uses portrait orientation per default, but
if I want, every single document can have a different orientation. Likewise
when I print photos from Adobe Photoshop every single image can have a
different orientation. The point being, that one selects the orientation for
once for each individual document, photo, chart etc, without worrying about
changing the printer setting before printing.

Thanks

Erik,

I think I am missing some thing here! The answer to your last question seems
to be "No".

I am not clear about what you are trying to do with respect to the other
questions. The paper orientation is something that one would normally do
using one's printers control and I cannot see why one would wish to do this
on the screen output.

On the screen the magnifiers are, obviously, used to change the size. For
just saving the file in the default format (.lwc) the answer seems to be
"No" again. If, however, one is exporting to .jpg etc (Pubish>Export to
File) then the number of dots per inch can be changed.

Perhaps if more clarification as to what you are trying to achieve, or the
problem defined, it may be possible to help further.

[LegacyUG] Where are Customized Sentence Definitions stored?

In order to facilitate printing reports in both Danish and English I switch
the Legacy working language between the two. One problem doing this is that
any customizations of the sentence definitions are lost when I switch, so I
wondered if anyone knows if these customized sentence definitions are store
in a separate file that I could save and restore after the switch?

Eric:
Use a combination of privacy brackets and global search and replace.

event note:

[[xxx note in first language xxx]]
[[yyy note in second language yyy]]

where xxx and yyy are unique codes that can be searched and replace.

search for [[xxx and replace with {{xxx
search for xxx]] and replace with xxx}}

This will expose the first language and hide the second.

Reverse the search and replace to hide the first language.

use the [[yyy and yyy]] to expose the second language as described above.

I think this will work but I haven't tried it.

I would create a duplicate set of sources, in both
languages, with one one of them with [[ ]] around
language 1, and the second copy around language 2.
This way you can send in their native language, with
the brackets around the other version. Then, if they
get Legacy for themselves, they can then downloaded
either private or public. That gives the reciever a
choice, and once set up, you never have to re-edit
your docs.

SV: [LegacyUG] Bi-lingual report issue

2008-04-26 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
My primary concern is the Event Notes and Source Text as the event names and
event sentence definitions are translated automatically when I switch
language in Legacy (in my case I'm so fortunate that Legacy supports both
languages in question).

As you suggest, properly the easiest solution is to write a separate
paragraph in both languages in the Notes and thus produce true bilingual
reports, but I'd still prefer single-language reports.

As Kathy suggest, the privacy brackets could be used as part of the
solution. This approach, as I understand it, gives the possibility of
including or excluding one of languages in the reports, but the other
language will always be printed.

Considering the international distribution of Legacy users, it's strange
that bilingual (or multilingual) reports etc. are not supported in a better
way by Legacy.

That's certainly an idea. To follow that line I'd also have to double all
events as I usually add descriptive notes to events. My initial idea was to
generate two reports, but I don't think is it possible to have the report
generator select sources and event based on language (or other criterias for
that matter)? An alternative would be to generate just one bi-lingual report
containing all double sources and events.

Hi,

I have the need of generation Legacy reports and books in at least two
languages, depending on the nationality of the people I want to address. I
expect many other Legacy users must have the same needs.

By changing the Language in Legacy itself and/or changing the Report
Language, I can easily change the standard wording and standard phrases in
reports and books, but all descriptions, notes and transcripts are naturally
printed in the language they are entered. I don't expect Legacy to
automatically translate these texts for me, but I'm looking for some advice
on a practical way of handling this bi-lingual problem. I could of course

SV: SV: [LegacyUG] Bi-lingual report issue

2008-04-26 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
Kathy,

Not a bad idea. I assume you were thinking of something like this for e.g.
event notes:

Text in one language

[[The same text in another language]]

Privacy brackets could be an easy way of including/excluding the one
language paragraphs, but the other language will always be printed, or have
I missed something?

Erik:
One idea might be to write your reports in both languages for each
individual and then use privacy brackets around the language not
desired, making sure that that selection is maintained when the
report is generated. It also means that both languages could be
available if you wanted to generate a truly bilingual report. The
privacy brackets are[[]]. Legacy treats anything contained within as
private and printing or not printing is a very simple toggle type
selection on the"what to include" page of the report generation
screen. Does this help?

SV: [LegacyUG] Bi-lingual report issue

2008-04-26 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
That's certainly an idea. To follow that line I'd also have to double all
events as I usually add descriptive notes to events. My initial idea was to
generate two reports, but I don't think is it possible to have the report
generator select sources and event based on language (or other criterias for
that matter)? An alternative would be to generate just one bi-lingual report
containing all double sources and events.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Bi-lingual report issue

I could of course
maintain two Legacy files, but that's not an attractive solution to me.

Any comments, ideas and advice are very welcome.

Thanks
Erik

This may not be a solution for some people but what I have written in French
for my French Canadian side of the family and English for the others so that
when I send a report to someone it everything is in the language of their
choice. This is exceptionally helpful now that I have access to Drouin
on-line as all the information is in French.

[LegacyUG] Download speed very low

2008-02-25 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
Hi,

Yesterday i wanted to download the latest updates to Legacy, but something
went wrong and i now have to download the full setup program. However, the
download speed is getting lower and lower, and after a few minutes it almost
comes to a stand still (approx. 5-10% of my available bandwidth)

Anyone know what this is?

SV: [LegacyUG] Advice on (compound) event

2008-02-16 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
Hi Susan,

Thanks for your replay - also very useful. I se now, how the Legacy fields,
sentence definitions and narrative descriptions in Notes, can be combined in
a very powerful way of writing up my family history.

My initial thought was to record all hard facts in Legacy, generate a
report/book and then add all the narrative descriptions using a word
processor. I now see that this would be not only unnecessary, but also
ill-advised as I would have to maintain two sets of genealogy files.

Thanks
Erik

Hi Erik,
Jenny has some good answers for you. I, too, am not sure what you mean
exactly by your last sentence, a field length being too short. In
sentence override, you can add [Notes] to the end of the definition,
and add more detail in the Notes.

I consider the first trip to be the immigration, and any return trips
to be travel (so use Travel event). But I suppose it might depend on
the person. To be honest, I even consider some people who settled her
for a few years before returning to their native country permanently
as having immigrated, because I believe that was their intent until
life threw them a curveball and they had to go home.

In your list below, first I would do residence event. I think I
redefined my residence event so that it reads ~description in place in
date~ thus the street and town go together before the date.

In the next seven items, I list them all in the immigration or travel
event. I did not redefine this event. I list the description as
"aboard the S.S. Scythia"; the date as the date of arrival, and the
Place as the port of arrival. But then in notes, I write, "It sailed
from Queenstown on 30 Apr 1897, and she appeared to have traveled
alone with only one dollar. She came to stay with her sister Cath
Cooke of Gloucester St., Boston, but was going to Mrs.
Killelea[[Killides]] at 237 Pearl St. in Cambridge first."

Another example has "aboard the S. S. Germanic with her sister" and
the Notes say, "The ship sailed from Liverpool, England. Bridget, age
17, was a servant, and carried one bag. Mary A., age 15, was also a
servant, but had two pieces of baggage. They were off to stay in
Ravenna, Ohio."

I hope these ideas help,
Susan Daily

SV: [LegacyUG] Advice on (compound) event

2008-02-16 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
Hi Jenny,

Thanks for your reply - it was very useful, and basically answered all my
questions. I now understand the proper use of sentence definition, sentence
overwrite and notes. Also your way of choosing between emigration and
immigration events makes sense to me (taking my own location as the point of
view)

Regards
Erik

PS! "... the filed length being too short" should have read "field length",
i.e. number of characters allowed. As I didn't realize I could use variables
in Sentence Overwrite I quickly ran out of space. Sorry for the confusion.

I use the Travel Event to document such visits. I wrote my own sentence
definition to read:

‹b›[EventName]‹/b›: From [Date] [HeShe] travelled [fromPlace]
[toDesc]. [Notes] [Sources]

and an example of one such Travel Event reads is as follows:

Event: Travel
Description: New York, en route to Hamilton Cotton Co, Fort Worth,
Texas
Date: 18-27 August 1920
Place: Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Notes: He travelled Tourist Class aboard the RMS Baltic, for an
intended stay of 8-10 months.

In a Report the complete sentence reads:

Travel: From 18-27 August he travelled from Liverpool, Lancashire,
England to New York, en route to Hamilton Cotton Co, Fort Worth, Texas.
He travelled Tourist Class aboard the RMS Baltic, for an intended stay
of 8-10 months.
>
>I'm also doubtful if I should register the initial trip as one or two

>(departure & arrival).

I don't have details of that person's return trip, but if I did I would
make a second Travel Event for that following the same format.

>Also I'm in doubt whether the final 'movement' to US

Where I have people who emigrated I have documented it as an Emigration
Event, rather than an Immigration. I think that might be because I was
born and raised in the UK and in my file are relatives to emigrated to
the USA and Australia. If I was born and raised in, say, USA, I might
use Immigration for people who moved there. I'm not sure!

I'm not sure what you mean about the filed length being too short, but
note that I re-wrote the Event Definition for all Travel Events; I
didn't use the Sentence Override facility.

[LegacyUG] Advice on (compound) event

2008-02-16 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
Hi,

I need some advice on how to document a person's initial trip from Denmark
to USA before the permanent immigration using events.

For starters I assume the events emigration/immigration is not appropriate
as the person eventually returned to DK, consequently I have to make due
with the event Travel. However, I find it a bit difficult to register all
the single facts, using the available fields in Legacy, in a way that the
resulting sentence becomes meaningful and in fluent natural language (I'd
prefer to avoid creating a custom event). The fact I'd like to document is:

The person's residence in Denmark:
The port of departure:
Date of departure:
Name of the ship:
Number of travel agent contract:
The port of arrival:
Date of arrival:
The final destination in the US:

The person later returned to DK after this trip before the final immigration
to USA.

I'm also doubtful if I should register the initial trip as one or two events
(departure & arrival). Also I'm in doubt whether the final 'movement' to US
should be registered as an emigrations or as an immigration event, or both.

Thanks
Erik

PS! I did experiment with the Sentence Overwrite, but I found the filed
length to short to fit all the relevant details

[LegacyUG] Primary Name and AKA

2008-02-01 Thread Erik Pilgaard Vinther
I have this one person which was christened 'Anton Marius Sorensen'
(documented in the Church records). His father and well as 5 generations
before him was christened using both a patronymic name plus the family name
Vinther. As an adult Anton emigrated from Denmark to USA, and in the Ellis
Island Passenger lists he listed his name as Anton Marius Winther and that's
what he called him self for the rest of his life in US. All his children in
all the US records I have found were named Winther.

Whether the reason for the missing Vinther at Anton's christening was due to
a clerical error or some other reason I don't know, but there is no doubt
that Anton perceived him self as a Vinther. Therefore I'm inclined to set
his primary name as Anton Marius Winther, and his christening name as an AKA
name.

Any views on this are very welcome.

Erik P. Vinther
