[LegacyUG]Tollarance - was: New Family Search Access

2008-05-26 Thread GBallard
Gene, (And all others who have dis-jointed noses)

In defense of JLB: (all times listed below are Pacific time)

Sherry's note was send at 1:49 PM, but didn't hit my list until 3:04 PM.

JLB's note was send at 3:00 PM.

So, please don't be so quick to jumb and pounce on JLB's sending a message.
The message could have been worded differently for me, but I am in
California. I do not know what part of the world JLB is, but in different
parts of the world people use different writing styles. It is just so
amazing at the tolarance, or lack there of, of people posting the link to
the download (which probably violated Millennia's rules), but people sharing
with a new user that the ettiquite is to not use "Artistic Sensibilities" is
looked totally down upon by you.

The way JLB worded the message may have been in jest or in a completely
different tone than you made it out to be. Without knowing this, we
shouldn't be so quick to judge.

Hopefully the person it was intended for didn't take it in the same tone in
which you did.

Can we all exercise a little tollarance, understanding, and patience that
what we read may mean something different in your native land. (As we are
all waiting for the release of v.7 I added patience to this list.)

This is a world wide list. Lets remember this. If there are messages that
offend you, please re-read them and try to read the positive in the message.

Glen Ballard

P.S. I am not perfect. I haven't always read things with tollarance and
definitely missed the understanding to many an email. But I try to re-read
the email several times and try to put myself in the posters place and try
to think like they are thinking.

I defended you once but this post is intolerable in its nasty and vicious
tone. It is especially egregious considering that Sherry has already taken
care of this individuals posting. One would hope that you are just having a

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 and Apple Computers?

2008-05-28 Thread GBallard
Janis,

Running Legacy on a Mac still requires a version of Windows to be installed.
If you are running Windows XP on the Mac, then you will be able to have IE7
installed under the Windows XP system. (I don't have Mac experience, but I
would guess it is running in a Virtual Machine like VMWare or Virtual PC on
the WinTel PC side can do.)

On a newer Mac with the Intel processors, you can use several programs as
mentioned below by Sherry to run Windows XP. If you have an older Mac with
a Motorolla processor, you need an emulator.

Since the new Mapping feature requires IE7, I assume that when running V7 on

RE: [LegacyUG] Version 7 Lat/long in event field

2008-06-14 Thread GBallard
John,

You could create an event/fact called Lat/Long or whatever you want and put
the coordinates in the description field. Give that a try and see if you
like it. You can re-order the events so the Lat/Long event/fact is the top
event/fact (but I think you have to do it manually for each person you add
the event to.)

Jenny.
First, my thanks to you and the others who replied to my query.

As you stated, when the Lat / Long is appended to the location is does also
appear in the Index and Chronology Views (the Chronology view is a bit
messed
up) but the Index View is quite useable.
However, The Lat / Long does not appear in the Pedigree or Descendant views.
Using the above method is bit of a carry-over from TMG.
I am Lat/ Long 'nut', I feel lost without this information.
I really like to see the Lat / Long when I look at the family view.
I am going to have to experiment with this.

Again my thanks.

Ed,

I don't know anything specifically about the New.Familysearch DB, but you
you export from it to a GEDCOM file? If so, you could them import that into
Legacy. Don't forget to backup before importing or merging this GEDCOM into
your family file.

Also, I seem to remember Sherry or someone from Millennia (the makers of
Legacy) saying here recently that Legacy7 will eventually be able to link
directly to the Familysearch Database when it's fully available to all, or
am I mixing this up with something else?

Since I'm using Win2000 on both my laptop and desktop computer, and,
therefor, can't use the mapping feature of Legacy, I'm wondering if I can
share my data between my two computers if one has XP and the other has
Win2000? Both would have the same version of Legacy. As a kind soul pointed
out to me, if this is doable, I could take advantage of the mapping feature.

RE: [LegacyUG] Enter adopted parents family?

2009-07-02 Thread GBallard
Red,

I am also adopted. I have not found my biological family and currently do not
plan to. I have just under 38,000 names in my database of my adopted line.
They are my family. The only family I have ever known. (I was 2 days old when
my adoptive parents took me home from the hospital.

That said, this would be very much a personal choice as to adding your
daughter-in-law's adoptive family or not. Personally I would. I record data
and facts in a person's life. I don't record emotions. I try to leave
emotions out of genealogy and try to only record facts in one's life.
(Hopefully this approach will lessen the chance of hurting someone's feelings)

Currently my daughter-in-law doesn't even know the names of her parents. So I
don't see how I could add any of that line (at present).

However, that is not my focus. My question concerns her adopted family. That
is were I have a reasonable amount of data. Would others add that line, even
though there is no biological connection.

I personally feel that one should take any and all important lines as far back
as you are able. Although not adopted myself I have cousins who where and if
the knowledge of their parents was known then I would research that line as
well if I could and they wished it. Currently I am doing my own family lines as
well as my step-fathers lines as well. The enjoyment is the research as well as
the discovery. Your adopted child is your family even if not genetically
related. Both lines may be researched. Further you never know if their
offspring will want to know who their genetic grandparents were. Even if they
call you grand pa.

Searched the archives, but so much on adopted children, got lazy and decided to
post my question here.

My daughter-in-law was adopted shortly after birth. She knows little about her
biological parents and relates well with her adopted family.

She has provided me with data on her adopted family going back 4 generations.
While it would be easy to add these data in Legacy, I'd like to hear how others
have handled this. Specifically, do others enter only the adopted parent's
information, or do they enter all that is known about the adopted family?

Under step 1. Select the conditions for your rule:
Where the subject line contains specific words
And add the word [LegacyUG

Under step 2. Select the actions for your rule:

As you must know, the "From" e-mail address on UG mail is each participant,
such as you, Ron Ferguson or Valerie ;-). Clicking on "Not Junk" only adds
that individual, not the Legacy UG mailing list to the safe sender list.
Outlook Express did have a way to handle mailing lists but I have not yet

Hi everyone. I'm new to this group and have Legacy 5.0. Last night I was
trying to pull my info off one computer to put on one of my laptops and it
said I needed to upgrade to 6.0 to open this. I was wondering if that's the
only way to open the info or not? Also, I copied (and pasted) from my

when I got that message. I don't know if that makes a difference or not,
but thought I'd toss that out there also. As you can probably tell... I'm
very disfunctional when it comes computers. Also, if I keep my data on the

saving the info each time?

Thank you so much.

RE: [LegacyUG] Runtime error 380...Invalid property value!

2007-11-08 Thread GBallard
Darlene,

One other thing you might want to do is go to the website and download the
full install and not try to install from the web or from within Legacy.
Once in a while there have been glitches with these types of installations.
I haven't seen any problems with installing when downloading the full
install file to your hard drive and then installing from there. (This file
can also be copied to an backup location for re-installation if needed.)

Darlene,

I believe you need to delete all .USR files. The numbers you are seeing
aren't version numbers. They are just sequential numbering as files in the
same folder cannot have the same number.

Hi everyone,
I cannot open my Legacy familytree! When I attempt to open it, a little
box opens and says:

Runtime error 380 Invalid Property Value

I went to the Legacy website and it said before I could update I had to
delete all the .usr files and Legacy.lng file

Well, I went to my legacy folder and there are lots of user files for all
different levels of Legacy including previous and future Legacy programs,
including Legacy 8 and beyond. Do I just delete the .usr files that pertain
to Legacy 6 or all .usr files in that entire folder? It says after I do
this, I can then download the update. I have never had to do this before to
obtain updates so what has gone wrong this time?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Manual in Binder format - (Was upgrade question)

2007-11-11 Thread GBallard
Tish and all interested in this subject,

As someone who has been around the computer industry for a LONG LONG time, I
would bet that the loose leaf idea was much too cost prohibitive. It has
been done before. I probably still have MS DOS 1.25 manuals in binders.

In the late 70's to mid 80's most, if not all the manuals came in binders.

My first computer at home was a Burrows TC3600 (Way before PCs were around).
This was eventually turned into a workbench as the frame and wheels were
very sturdy. My first "PC" was an Osbourn I. I also had several kit
computers that I built myself (When you had to solder or wire wrap every
circuit for yourself)

As for the publishers of software just printing the changes for those who
have V6 and just the changes for thos who have V5 and just the changes for
those who have V4, etc... would require hiring more people and would
obviously raise the cost of the manuals. It would probably cost more for
the portion that changed than for the whole new version.

Also, if you were to print updates with every minor version update, it would
be WAY too much work. The help files in Legacy are updated much more
frequently and is easily searchable. This is a much easier and more cost
effective medium for these minor updates. Once Legacy does a Major code
update (version 5, version 6, version 7, etc...) they only have one version
of the manual and it isn't updated.*

You could always take your manual to a print show with a hydralic cutter and
have the binding removed and holes drilled in the margin and put it in a
binder for yourself. Alternatively, you could also purchase the manual in
PDF format and print 3 hole paper and put in a binder. You can also add
lined paper for notes.

* Ken, Jim, Sherry, or Brian can confirm or correct this statement.

Just to put in my two cents worth - I think a manual in note book style wold
be wonderful. It would be so nice to be able to take out the page we want
to really work with at our computers, and then place it back into the book.
Also, the idea of just adding the newest Version pages to the book is a
wonderful idea.

Has Legacy considered this suggestion? I certainly would vote for it.

RE: [LegacyUG] Importing from FTM 2005

2007-11-17 Thread GBallard
Barbara,

With under 1500 people in your database, you would be able to clean up
everyone very quickly. I have worked on cleaning up file imports with over
80,000 individuals. For that particular file it took 100 hours. With only
1500 people, it wouldn't take long at all and you would have all of your
data intact and connected.

FTM transplant from FTM 5 to Legacy 3. (I never did like the FTM interface
or the data structure. When I found Legacy, I tried it and within 1 hour of
installing it on my computer, I purchased the Deluxe version and have never
looked back)

I did something like that. I only exported my direct line (including
siblings, their spouses and children). That way my file was smaller and
easier to work with. I added back selected individuals later on. Many of
the people in my file were so far removed from my direct line I just dropped
them.

Barbara,

It is well worth the effort. I have over 23,000 names and bout 2,000 photos
that I've switched over from FTM.

Legacy has actually helped in that you can easily clean up your files with
the Legacy tools.

I am sold after over 10 years of FTM.

RE: [LegacyUG] Date Format Importance - which I think should be location importance

2007-11-19 Thread GBallard
Valerie,

This is just my general observation and not "genealogical gospel" so please
take it as such.

The genealogists that I know who are certified or accredited genealogists
started doing there data entry on paper forms. The paper forms were limited
in space, making abbreviations helpful to fit the locations and other data
in the appropriate fields. When genealogy programs were first written for
the computer, disk space was at a premium. As disk space became cheaper,
many books on computer based genealogy encouraged to move away from any
abbreviations and spell everything out.

I know people who will type every last word of a birth, marriage, or death
certificate into Legacy instead of scanning the certificate. This is
another old habbit from the early days of genealogy.

We are in the digital age. I digitally record and attach audio / video
clips to my data. I scan everything I get my hands on from BMD certificates
to wedding announcements to newspaper articles about relatives.

I have been really surprised by the answers to this subject.

During this thread there has been no mention of the Chapman's Codes.

Where I come from in the Genealogical world, and I am an accredited
genealogist, it is always recommended to use the Chapman's codes as a
standard then everyone knows where you are talking about.

I am unsure about the long and short location names but is it possible to
put the Chapman's Code in the short field and the full name in the long
field ?

I am trying to be helpful here so be gentle if I have messed this up as
apparently am not very good at expressing myself.

Barbara:

The recommended standard is to avoid use of abbreviations. This is
especially important if your data will be read by anyone outside the US.
AK and AR are particular problems even for those inside the US. I was very
surprised, though, at a recent thread on a list for professional
genealogists that indicated many of those folks consistently use state
abbreviations in their databases--apparently for the primary purpose of
getting the data to fit on charts. These people, however, are producing
work for clients and were quick to say that they never use their software to
produce "canned" reports such as the family books you can create with most
software programs. The charts come from their databases but their reports
are written from scratch with no abbreviations.

I'm sure this won't answer your basic question but, as with many aspects of
Legacy, it depends on what your intended use is.

Thanks to all for answersthis makes it clearerthis program is so
great in that I can easily see where data is entered in the location field
that doesn't belong there (in one case, "adopted by Michael Luther")--I
understand that I will need to go to those individuals and clean that up, so
as not to lose data (I'm catching on)

Had also seen the option for merging several locations, and just have one
more question along that line--is there a standard preference on spelling
out the name of a state as opposed to the standard abbreviation
(understanding, I should be consistent)--in other words, if I have some AR,
some Arkansas, some AR, USA, some Arkansas, USA, I could merge them all to
one standard, and does it matter if I use the AR or the Arkansas?

One last thing, I drowning in manual, user group, web site--would you mind
to "coddle" me and give me a quick reference to the "archives"
referred to here.

(At least my emails should make everyone else feel like geniuses!!)

Thanks so much,
Barbara

RE: [LegacyUG] Burial Location Entry

2007-11-19 Thread GBallard
Barbara,

There are a couple of reasons I can think of:

1.) Allow you to print the address on a label or envelope to send a letter
for information on a relative.
2.) Allow you to export a list to import into a contact manager, PDA, or
GPS for driving directions

I am sure others can add more to this list.

Yes, that is what I'm doing now, removing the name of the cemetery from the
burial location fields. And I do have several cases where the death location
is different from the burial location. But I was talking about two different
places to enter the BURIAL LOCATION...that is, you put the location in the
individual's information screen, and then when you click on the plus sign
and get to the screen where you can put the name of the cemetery, there are
blanks there, again, to put the BURIAL LOCATION again--same information you
just entered on the previous screen. I was asking if there was any reason to
have to repeat the same information. I understand that you could enter the
exact address of the cemetery on that screen. But, if on the individual's
information screen you have put city, county, state, country, and that's all
the information you have, is there a reason for putting the city, county,
state, country AGAIN on the Burial Address screen?

I think the reason is because a person can die in one place but be buried in
another. It is pretty common actually. I too had to go through my file and
remove the the name of the cemetery in that field after watching the videos
(which I think should be mandatory viewing)

RE: [LegacyUG] Tagging a family

2007-11-22 Thread GBallard
Pat,

Do you have Legacy 6 Deluxe? The update feature is a Deluxe feature. If
you are using the Standard version you will have to download the way it is
suggesting.

Ron,

If I understand you correctly, after telling it I want to download the
update and then it takes me to the screen that says click to download Legacy
Deluxe 6.0, it is -- instead of doing what it says it's going to do -- it is
actually going to download what is needed for me to have v6.0.0.168?

I wonder why it doesn't SAY that -- or have that as an option?

Thanks muchly,
Pat

Pat,

Firstly, UPDATES: Go to Legacy Home>Check for Updates The download will only
be of the the bits which you don't have. You need version 6.0.0.168. (btw
that does not mean you have missed 13 updates - I think only the latest).

Tagging: I can confirm what you are getting, it may be a bug, I am not sure,
but you can only tag all the family and you do have to select a spouse to do
this. However, it is no big deal to untag those not required.

Michele,

To my knowledge, there has only been one version of the Geo Location
Database. Go to Options/Customize/Other and click on "Database
Maintenance...". If the download option is available (not grayed out),
click on it and select Europe. Next, import it into your database. Next,
compress the Geo Location Database.

Hope this helps.

Hi Charlotte,

First off let me say that I generally don''t use a flash drive or portable
hard drive for this. When I go to the library I usually take a laptop with
me and run Legacy on it.

While this doesn't have anything to do with Legacy a great place to learn
about portable applications is:
http://portableapps.com/

So, as far as using Legacy on a portable drive: I don't know that you need
anything. As a test I copied my entire Legacy directory to a
flash drive. Mine was about 400MB but with flash drives as large as
8GB for under $100 this shouldn't be a huge issue. I then took the
drive to a Windows machine that was logged in with a guest account.
Using Windows Explorer I navigated to the Legacy.exe file on the flash drive
and double clicked. I had to open the Customize->Locations tab and correct
all the pathnames there for the drive letter assigned to the flash drive. I
also used the File->Open Family File menu to insure I had the file from the
flash drive loaded.

After that everything seemed to work normally although, to be honest, I
didn't do extensive testing. Perhaps there are some other members out there
that can chime in with their experiences using Legacy with a portable
device.

Regards,
Bob

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy on a flash drive

Bob,

When Legacy is installed, it installs files in the system folders. If you
have installed Legacy, then this will work. However, at the FHCs, or
Library on a computer that has never had Legacy installed, it won't work as
those system files are not present.

Glen,

It does but I had renamed the Legacy directory before I tired this in an
attempt to simulate a library computer. Still, it may not have been a
perfect simulation so it would be best if someone did a field test.

I use Legacy to store GPS Locations.

I wish Legacy would give the choice of weather to store Lat and Long in
Decimal or Deg/min/sec.

I know there is a conversion routine, but it would be nice to be given a
Choice.

RE: [LegacyUG] about New.FamilySearch

2008-01-19 Thread GBallard
Reg,

I hate to burst your bubble so to speak, but this is just like a beta
release of software. It is only available to a limited number of people at
first. It will be available for free to the entire world at some point.
(The talk is late in 2008, but we all know how timelines can change.) The
"Church" will always share what it has with the world. Infact, they are in
the process of scanning all the records they have stored in their archives
to share with the World for free. You can search for the ScanStone project
on the web to find info about that. They are also indexing records and
sharing the work with the World for free.

Momalot66: Currently you can't download that I know of, but would have to
manually enter the names (which I prefer to do to control the way place
names, etc... are in my database). Once the nFS has been released to the
world and Legacy is allowed to release the interface with nFS, you should at
that time be able to add connected relatives.

Once it is available to the general population, Legacy will be releasing an
updated "Search the IGI" feature to interact with the newFS (New
FamilySearch).

Reg, If you would like access to nFS before it is released to the general
population, you can volunteer in a Family History Center near you. The
director of the FHC will then contact the powers that be and get you a
userID for nFS.

RE: [LegacyUG] Found picture files not sticking

2008-01-20 Thread GBallard
Dave,

I don't think the problem is with Ampersands in general, but the OS they are
on. Unix/Linux uses special characters as control characters and they can
(and have in the past) really mess up things. When building websites, it is
always better to not use special characters except for the underscore and
the dash and also not a good idea to have spaces in the name of the file.

Scripting languages can handle the characters for the most part, but why
tempt fate.

I have to disagree with this statement. Ampersands are quite OK.
They just have to be coded correctly. My web pages, including those
generated by Legacy are riddled with ampersands in picture file names. As
long as every one is coded as & there are no problems.

I do however agree with your statement (following) that it is better not to
use them in file names

RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching numerous Pictures to one person!

2008-02-10 Thread GBallard
Darlene,

You can type the last name in the top "Find" box when adding photos. You
can even type the full image name and it will bring it up for you.

Windows nor Legacy know your thoughts and will always default to the
beginning of the directory when accessing a folder. Computers only do
exactly what we tell them to do. When adding a photo, you don't start out
by saying add a photo starting with "R".

I hope this helps.

Hi Richard,
I must not be explaining myself very well. I will try again. I am
entering the photos one by one and labeling them just fine. I have all my
legacy pictures in one folder sorded by last name Sub-folders. In the one
folder where I have the 80 pics for one individual, are many other photos
for many other people, also. Each time I go back to the folder to select
the next photo, I have to scroll again from what ever is alphabetized,
beginning with A. all the way down to, lets say R. Legacy will not leave
you at the R.'s but will always go back to A.
This means excessive scrolling after each and every photo additon. I wish
the curser would remain on the last photo imported (in the R's) so you could
select the next photo to attach, without all the scrolling.
Does this make more sense? :)

I think you'll also find that some people are so thin-skinned that they can
easily misinterpret someone else's intent on a private message. For that
matter, many people often misinterpret intent on publicly posted messages.
That's the nature of the beast when using written or typed communications
which does not carry vocal tones, facial expressions, etc. In the past I've
been guilty of getting bent out of shape over someone's casual remarks but
"in my old age" I've learned to become more mellow. If you don't agree with
me, I'm going to kill you. :-)

RE: [LegacyUG] Testing My Backup - Problem

2008-04-06 Thread GBallard
Bob,

If I understand correctly, you are talking about a folder on your hard drive
and not a physical folder.

The "Research Folder" you speak of is a physical folder in a filing cabinet
not on your hard drive. This can be used for storing paper copies and
easily accessing them via a filing system.

If I have missed the boat, please send it back so I may board with the rest
of the passengers.

Cathy - you are one of the folks I believe really understands the Legacy
program and I appreciate your responses. I've only been using Legacy for a
couple of months, but am finding so many ways to use it, I wonder why I
never tried it before. BTW- I really appreciate the 'copy to clipboard'
suggestion of a few days ago - it really speeded up data entry when similar
data affects multiple folks.

As with all programs, I am 'self-educating' with the help of the net. Could
you shed some light on the sentence on page 109 of the manual that states
'FILE ID ... you can enter a file number to reference in your research
folder'? Not knowing for sure how this works, I set up a 'research folder'
in the Legacy--> Data file (along with storing my Genealogy Photos there)
into which I have dumped all sorts of items - lately downloaded census
copies. Could you suggest a way to number these files. I initially entitle
them as '1870 US Federal Census for Joe Smith'. I then entitled it in the
File ID as 'Kirby' and it affects dozens of my entries. So when I add the
File ID as 'Kirby', the program keeps multiple entries of it in the File ID
area. Is this normal? Also, is there a recommended (better)
numbering/identification method to associate the census title I initially
assigned and the File ID? Again, I presume that the 'Kirby +1' (1880 US
Federal Census for Joe Smith) is additional data within the same parameters
as my 'Kirby' would be when I have multiple source documents I want to
include.

Also, is adding the census as an event an overkill when I print out a
'book'?? The data prints out for each of the census years I made into an
event.

I hope some of this makes sense since it is a multi-question problem and I'm
trying to figure out an acceptable model to use.

Hi Jan,

I think you are getting confused because you are calling everything
associated with Legacy "Legacy". You need to distinguish between the program
and the data files you create using it - both Family Files
(.fdb) and Backup files (.zip) (and many others with your Family File name
and a different extension that you can let the program look after).

Family Files will have an icon with the Legacy logo on it so that may be the
source of your confusion. Only the program gets called "Legacy." You don't
normally have a backup of the program - it's useless as programs need to be
installed, not copied - though you may keep the Installation file on your
flash drive or elsewhere in case you need to reinstall when you don't have
quick access to the internet to download a new copy.

When you get a dialogue window looking for a file to open or restore OR to
save a new Family File or a backup, get into the habit of checking that the
Look in: or Save in: folder is the correct one. If not you have to navigate
to the right one.
As Ron says, Legacy usually remembers the last place used, but sometimes
needs to be reminded.

Now you say you've opened Legacy and gone to File > Restore and there are no
files showing in the box. This means that it isn't at the right folder and
you have to look for the folder with the backup in it. It doesn't matter if
that is on the flash drive, the hard drive or a CD you've made. Legacy will
still open it and save it as a Family File wherever you tell it to. (You
can't tell it to save it as a Family File on a CD.)

Cheers,
Cathy

You might want to try clicking on areas in Legacy other than on the icons.
For example, on the family tab, place your mouse cursor between the main

you can click and rotate through different people.

Colin,

Welcome.

In my experience the best way of learning the program is to play
with it. Click on everything (right and left) and you will rapidly find what
can and cannot be done. The Help files are always up to date, more so than
the User Guide, and are extremely comprehensive. You may also have noticed
that the help page on the various screens are context helps for that
particular screen.

RE: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy in a network

2007-07-16 Thread GBallard
Ken,

There are a couple of options.

Option 1: set the picture path on your computer to the appropriate drive
letter for the share (assuming you are connecting using a specific drive
mapping)

Option 2: create a data volume on your wife's computer. This second volume
would need to have a drive letter that you can assign to both computers (the
host computer as well as the share on the second computer) For this you
might want to use drive G: and when you map to this volume, use drive G:
(the mapped drive must have the same path as the host.)

Subject: [LegacyUG] Using Legacy in a network

We have installed Legacy on my wife's computer because she does most of the
entry information.

I would like to be able to access the same data from my computer downstairs
in my office ... I am responsible for the pictures and I can't do that while
my wife is using her computer for other things (no intention of both of us
doing Legacy at the same time).

Installing Legacy on my computer and opening the database from my computer
is not a problem.

However, the pictures are not present when I open the family file from my
computer. I have not figured out the relationship between the images and the
database. Is there a setting somewhere that tells Legacy where to find the
images?

I use both computers to back one another up so the images are found in C:\My
Pictures\Family on both computers.

Suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks
Ken

IMHO, I do think that the current Gedcom program, has not been changed, and
probably won't, so Legacy 7 has no control over it. When the committee that
monitors and edits/upgrades Gedcom does this, it will be mentioned. L7 may
create a tool to send data into an 'Event' type field, but Gedcom won't

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7

2007-08-21 Thread GBallard
Richard,

I too cannot find my information about the person who was responsible for
the initial creation and the current "Production" version of the standard.
But if memory serves me correctly, the standard was created around 1987 by
the Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints and was last officially updated to the 5.5 standard around 1996 that
is still in use today.

The developer was working on a new XML compatible gedcom standard, but was
not finalized to my knowledge and the developer might have retired. I think
there are unofficial versions floating around on the internet under the
version number of 5.5.1.

The original "Official" website for the Gedcom standard was www.gedcom.org,
but as of this email, the website is down, but the domain is registered to:

Intellectual Reserve, Inc.
50 East North Temple Street
Salt Lake City, UT 84150-3011

To my knowledge, this is a part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints. The following link is a copy in .PDF format of the Gedcom 5.5
standard: http://www.ces.clemson.edu/~simms/genealogy/ll/gedcom55.pdf.

Hopefully my memory isn't failing me and the above is close to accurate. If
not, my appologies and please feel free to correct this information.

RE: [LegacyUG] Purge Unused Locations?

Kirsten,

Yes they will be deleted. One way to keep them: create a new individual
(un-linked) with a funny name that you will remember. Then create events
and add these locations to the event location. One event will be needed for
each location.

Hope this will work for you.

I have several locations in the Master Location List where I've added notes
about when names changed or they were absorbed by some other colony, etc.
These locations are not necessarily used for any individual in my database.
If I "purge unused" will these be wiped out even if they have notes
attached? (I should have experimented with this before I got fancy and put
in all those notes.) I suppose a work-around would be to assign them to a
phantom individual, but perhaps that's not the best way to handle it.
Suggestions please.

Sorry Ron, but you have *me* to blame for that one. The decision was made
to change the wording in the UK and Canadian English versions -- so you're
using one of them. The USA version still has "about age".

In defence of Millennia showing these changes in the Update List . .

versions. Keeping track of these and their impact on users of all languages
would be an immense job, possibly requiring an additional employee.
However, I will watch out for this in the future for language changes that I
am making and will try to identify anything that affects reports or web
pages.

There are editing programmes available which will search-replace through
multiple files. I don't remember the names right now but a web search
should find them. I've written my own small programme which goes through my
Legacy-generated web pages and corrects the HTML errors, as well as adding a
different file name on specific pages for the enlarged picture.

RE: [LegacyUG] Names VS AKA

2007-09-09 Thread GBallard
Ralf,

My grandfather was Paul Cisneros. One of his brothers also spelled the last
name with a C, but the rest of the family spelled their last name Sisneros.
I use the Cisneros spelling where appropriate in the surname field and
Sisneros were appropriate in the surname field.

Also, I have Izatt's in my family. The name had several spellings over the
centuries. When I find the spelling in print, I use that spelling.

The only time I use the AKA for spelling variations is if the name spelling
is diffferent on documents for the same person, such as my step father's
father. His naturalization papers has D'Isernia, his WWI draft register has
Disernia (which is the family spelling today). I have also found several
other spellings of his surname that I have in the AKA section.

I have an odd trio of surnames:

BOTHERIDGE, Blotheridge and Brotheridge

BOTHERIDGE is the version I have decided to go with as that was the surname
my great-grandmother signed on her marriage register. (This was the first
time I can find someone in this line signing their own name.)

I have two quesions:

1. Since they show up so often, would the other variations (Blotheridge,
Brotheridge) be considered AKA's?

2. If #1 is yes, would you input only the surname in the AKA box or their
first name too? There is no issue with first names, only the surname.

Thanks,

Ralf

RE: [LegacyUG] Definitions and abbreviations

2007-10-01 Thread GBallard
Jess,

Several books that I read before starting transferring my genealogy from the
old family group sheets from the family stated that with paper genealogy
abbreviations were acceptable as space was very limited, but with computer
genealogy there isn't a space limitation so spell out everything. I don't
use abbreviations or accronyms in my data unless I haven't been able to find
what was meant. (This doesn't change the content in any way other than to
clarify what was used by old researchers.)

If you want to add the abbreviation as well as spelling it out completely,
that would be fine as people looking over the old and the knew would be able
to make the connection with the abbreviations / accronyms.

Hi all! I am new to the group, and have been using Legacy since around June
of this year.
I jumped right in and got started by inputting nine generations of paternal
family info from a hardcopy report my parents had. After that I've jumped
over to a 307 page, ten generation publication on the maternal side.

I'm curious to know how you all handle abbreviations and variances of same
across reports, sources, etc.
I'm also curious to know if Legacy has some corner of it's realm somewhere
that I've overlooked where one can keep definitions, abbreviation, and
acronym meanings.

The maternal file I am inputting at present has several abbreviations and
acronyms that I do not recognize (but have yet to have time to research
them, I just found them yesterday). This provoked me into wondering how
future generations and other family members will know what certain things
are in my files.
I try to stand by generic genealogical standards - or what little I know of
them so far.

At present, I've simply been putting a "full" version in the notes section
of person or event in question - For instance, SHSU would be in description
of a single event, then in the notes portion I would spell out Sam Houston
State University of Huntsville. -- However, thirty family members later, I
realized that if I had one singular place for global acronyms and
definitions, I wouldn't have so much redundancy.

I have a question about adoption. I don't know how long it's been going on,
but I just asked a client for legal proof that the child was adopted (and
she can therefore sign for him). To my surprise I got a birth certificate
with only her name on it (as mother). The biologic parents names were
removed! That would make it hard to track genetic background if she didn't
know who the biologic parents were. But I guess that's also a privacy issue.
