RE: [LegacyUG] Location Mapping

2009-11-10 Thread Jim Terry/Support
This is a new issue, probably occasioned by a change at Microsoft Bing Maps
(formerly Virtual Earth). Brian has been logged it as issue number 0002956:
BING Interface No longer works to position map and it has a high priority
for the programmer’s attention. The fix should appear in a free update to
the Legacy program. I do not have a schedule for when that will happen.

2009-10-11 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Roxanne,

I've got a better story. When I was 19 years old I came from college for the
summer of 1970. For some reason not remembered, I was using my step-mother's
car and opened the trunk. There was a flight bag there and being curious I
unzipped it. Lo and behold! There were my mother's ashes in their sealed
urn! Why my Dad put them there I don't know, but when I told my step-mom,
she nearly flipped! She had been driving all over San Diego with the first
wife's cremations in the back end for who knows how long! I urged my Dad to
respectfully find a less mobile resting place for my mother. Permanent
disposition unknown to me to this day.

RE: [LegacyUG] Here is a good example

2009-10-09 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Yes, thank you Evert!

Legacy's Advanced Set Living feature can be reached by clicking Tools on the
menu bar and selecting Advanced Set Living.

This option does an intelligent search through your entire family file
looking for people that are older than the cutoff age, which is usually 120
years old. When someone of this age is found, it is assumed that all of
their ancestors are older than that and that they are all dead. Legacy then
sets their Living flag to NO as far back as the line goes from there,
regardless of whether or not they have birth or christening dates.

The 60 maximum is programmed into Legacy.

You can have 60 children per couple. A man could father more than 60
children, but I presume that he would have several wives or concubines or

give birth to more than 60 children -- ouch!

Tom,

When you select 'Choose Program' the programs list opens. You should have
uncheck the box for 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of

[LegacyUG] Master Location List - Solution for run-time error '3019' Operation invalid without a current index

2009-08-20 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Sherry and I have figured out the cause of Run-time error '3019' Operation
invalid without a current index which is occurring in the Master Location
List. Sherry is sending in the bug report and I am contacting you who are
subscribed to the Legacy User Group with the work-around:

1. Please click on Options on the menu bar and choose Customize.

2. In the Customize window, click the View tab and then select 'Use the
Master Location List with the Mapping feature'.

3. Open the Master Source List and it will function without error 3019 or
freezing.

4. At this point, if you select Show Map, you will need to close the Master
Location List and reopen it for the map to actually appear.

The solution for this error 3019 should appear in the next free update to
the Legacy program. I do not have a date for when that will happen.

My daughter-in-law was adopted shortly after birth. She knows little about

She has provided me with data on her adopted family going back 4

to hear how others have handled this. Specifically, do others enter only

the adopted parent's information, or do they enter all that is known about

2009-07-02 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Red,

I am adopted and at age 35 tracked down my biological parents, so I now have
two set of parents for me in my Legacy family file.

1. To add second set of parents, work in Family View and put the adoptee in
the husband or wife box.

2. Next click the Parents icon (tool button) in the row of icons at the
bottom of their box.

3. In the Parents screen click 'Add New Parents' and follow the steps to add
the biological parents.

4. To set the preferred parents, highlight them and click Select in the
upper right corner of the Parents screen.

5. To set the Child Status and Relationship to Parents start with the
adoptive parents in Family View and then click Edit on the menu bar and
select Children's Settings.

6. In the Children screen set the Child Status to Adopted and set the
relationship to the father and mother, then close the screen.

Repeat steps 5 and 6 with the biological parents in Family View and set the
Child Status to Biological and the relationship to the father and mother to
Biological.

When you want to generate book style reports for the biological lineage, be
sure to click the Wording 1 tab and adjust the wording for the parents and
children to suit your preferences. Also click the Report Options tab and on
the Include tab select the options you want for Child Status and
Child-Parent Relationships.

using Access

In L7 after vers. 55 sources to be merged must have the same source

templateID, (tblSR TemplateID). Basic TemplateID = 0 and ESM source

template IDs are positive integers. Using Access we can manually

change a basic TemplateID to match that of the ESM source we want to

merge it to.

In Legacy: Tag the 2 sources you want to be merged (1 ESM 1 basic).

From the source list check show only tagged sources to verify you

have only 1 basic 1 ESM.

Also: For the basic source: Show List Clear all tag1 Tag everyone

in List. This will help to fill in the citation template later. From

File Save Family File as: BasicSource

Close Legacy. Open Access with your main file.fdb.

Add the following select query to view tagged sources:

SELECT tblSR.IDSR, tblSR.SrcName, tblSR.Contents, tblSR.UseStandard,

tblSR.TemplateID, tblSR.SrcTag

FROM tblSR

WHERE (((tblSR.SrcTag)=1));

Manually make following changes on the select query:

Change “TemplateID” of the basic from 0 to equal the positive ID of the ESM.

Change “UseStandard” on the basic from 1 to 0.

Notice “Contents” of ESM record contains a template but the basic remains
blank.

Close Access. Open Legacy.

Your 2 tagged sources now have the same templateID so they can now be

merged or you can wait till you've filled in the source Detail

templates.

Go through your tagged individuals to fill in citation detail

templates, untag Individuals as templates are filled in until all are

untagged.

Your multimedia will be there, Text/Comments will be there and

Recorded date also. If you can't fill in the citation detail template

from viewing multimedia or Text/Comments go back to your old

BasicSource file.

Two days ago I created a new master source and began using it. I was copying

Source list and it is simply not there. I put mine in under groups to find

an individual and copy and paste it.

I ran a source report (master source only) and it was listed among them. !!!

I did file maintenance. I know you are going to say, it is there, but I'm

sure it isn't listed.

I would create another new one to replace it, but I can't delete the first

one because I can't find it !!

indicate that this person never married, and as far as we know, never lived

RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage, Divorce, Marriage

2009-05-26 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Kathleen,

I did like Jenny Benson suggests for my aunt who married a second time to
the same man after nearly ten years of separation by divorce. This could
result in some unusual report wording, but there are ways to handle this in
Legacy.

You can change the marriage wording any way that you want. You don't have to
accept Legacy defaults. There are a couple of different places in Legacy
where relationship wording can be changed to suit your preferences:

Marriage Information screen - To open the Marriage Information screen click
on the Marriage bar below the Husband and WIfe in Family View.

Wording Options Tab

Family View Labels

Choose the labels you would like to use when displaying this marriage
couple. The default labels are Husb and Wife.

Default Report Phrases if this is the First Marriage

The traditional (and default) phrase used when printing reports is
married. John married Sarah..., or Sarah married John If the This
couple did not marry option has been selected, the default changes to had a
relationship with. John had a relationship with Sarah..., or Sarah had a
relationship with John (The defaults for these two phrases can be
changed globally in the Options Customize View Default Family View
Labels and Report Wording box.) If you want to change the phrase for this
marriage/partnership only, you can type a new phrase into the box. Keep in
mind that this phrase is used to build the beginning of a sentence. The
sentence will then have the date and place added to it. John married Sarah
on 12 Dec 1888 in London, England...

Overriding the Report Phrases

If you would like to completely change the narrative wording that Legacy
normally uses to construct a sentence for a report, you can change it to
anything you want to. Whereas the default wording above automatically
inserts the first name of each of the spouses/partners, these new override
phrases does not. You must include the names in the phrase. This gives you
the option to modify the names and to change the order of the parts. Johnny
took Sarah as his wife ... or Johnny and Sarah got married ... or John
married his high school sweetheart Sarah Again, this is the beginning
portion of a sentence that will have the date and location added to it, so
keep this in mind.

You must construct two versions of the sentence, one describing the
husband's first marriage (or partnership) and the other describing the
wife's first marriage.

Default Report Phrases if this is Not the First Marriage

Similar to the wording for a first marriage, the default phrase used for a
second or later marriage is next married or next had a relationship
with. John next married Sarah..., or Sarah next had a relationship with
John If you want to change the phrase for this subsequent
marriage/partnership only, you can type a new phrase into the box.

Overriding the Report Phrases

Just as with the first marriage, you can enter your own wording for later
marriages. Later in his life Johnny got remarried to Ruth ... or Several
years after her divorce, Sarah met a man named Alfred and they were married
Again, this is the beginning portion of a sentence that will have the
date and location added to it, so don't put a period at the end.

Again, as with the first marriage, you must construct two versions of the
sentence.

Other word substitutes

You can also change the terms Spouse and Marriage to other words that will
be used in various reporting situations.

Customize screen - To open the Customize screen, click on Options on the
menu bar and select Customize.

1. View tab

Default Marriage Wording

Many words and phrases can be customized in Legacy. These are used to label
various information boxes and to create sentences for report and web site
output.

Family View Labels

The terms Husband and Wife are normally used on the Family View for the
two main individuals if they have marriage information or have children. You
can change this default behavior by changing the Left Side: and Right Side:
fields. The Husb and Wife terms are used if the couple is married. If the
couple is not married, the Male and Female terms on the second line are
used. If there is only one person showing, and there are no children, the
Male and Female terms on the third line are shown. You can make changes to
any of these terms to make new defaults in your family file.

Report Phrases for First Marriage or Partnership

You can choose the default word or phrase to use when a sentence is built
for a narrative-style report. There are four variations, two for use when
the couple are married (one for when the spouse is identified and the other
for when the spouse is unknown) and the other two are for when they are not
married (again, one for when the spouse is identified and the other for when
the spouse is unknown). When adding a marriage or partnership to your family
file, these words or phrases are used by default. For example, John married
Sarah... or

2. The original repeating messages were actually a problem created by a

3. As a matter of fact, I count some 65 message sent to the group by

List Subscribers,

We regret the hiccup with the list server that sent out scores of
List Subscription Notification message to every subscriber. I received
58 such messages myself, but none after 12:30 am.

I have searched for a list server report that would tell me what
happened, but can't find anything. So the cause is a mystery.

I am asking for a ban on anymore comments/relies since this looks like
an isolated problem that seems unlikely to repeat. One of the reasons
for asking for the ban is that my Spam filter is now catching most of

RE: [LegacyUG] Windows Vista

I have Windows Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba laptop. When I got it, it

After a couple of days, I got used to Vista and haven't had any
problems. The only thing that I really notice is that Vista tends to be
a little slow, but that's because it's a huge OS.

The only programs I have installed under Vista are AVG Anti-Virus, AVG

works
with Windows Vista. I remember a while back some people were having
trouble
with it, but perhaps the bugs are ironed out of it now.
Thanks,

Will Legacy Version 7 make provision for the recording of same-sex
relationship and same-sex marriages?

As most of you know, here in Canada same-sex marriages are not only
lawful
but also protected by our Human Rights Charter (part of our
constitution),
so over time many of your Canadian Legacy clients will have occasion to
want
to enter this marriage information about their gay relatives in their
genealogy database.

In my rather limited family tree, I have three same-sex marriages (my
own
included) that I would like to record as marriages and not as common-law
relationships, friendships or partnerships whose relationship
commencement date is defined (as it is by Family Tree Maker) as the day
that they met.

Thanks.

Stan

P.S. I sincerely hope that you do not conclude that my asking this
question
is in any way a political or social commentary, activist issue,
religious
opinion or morality lecture. (I just joined this user group a few days
ago
and would hate to be kicked off so soon.) It is a simple, dispassionate
and
objective observation that society is changing, and asking if Legacy
will be
keeping up with those changes or not. Having to use a work-around is
a
very distasteful way to treat anybody's spouse.

I've been sitting here watching this thread for three days now. There
is
one simple point to make -

What any of you or I think - we don't count and whatever we say
doesn't
 count.

If the listowners don't declare something off-topic then it may be on
topic no matter what the rest of you say or what I think.

Something to think about is the fact someone is here asking about
something you think is off-topic may be telling the folks at legacy
that
they need to change their documentation etc.

So before any of us starting telling someone else they are on or off
topic, perhaps we should defer to the people who actually own this
list
and make that determination. In the first place it would eliminate a
lot
of the discussion of what is on and off topic.

I'm not paying for this list - most of you aren't. They know who this
list is aimed at and the technical skills they think those people
should
have. We don't. They represent the company that is paying for this
and
perhaps they should be the ones making the determination. In the past
they've stepped in when they have felt something was off-topic. In my
humble opinion, they do a pretty darn good job.

And actually, this whole thread is probably off-topic in that it has
NOTHING to do with how to use the Legacy software. But I'll let them
 make that determination.

I attended the Sacramento Root Cellar seminar a week ago and we got a
tiny preview of the Source Writer and how it works.  The best I can
remember, when you are beginning to site a source, you choose what kind
(vital, book, census, etc) and a box appears appropriate to that
source.  You still have to decide on, and fill in, the title, author,
publisher, etc. and, most critically, choose how to word your Master
Source.  What happens automatically is that the Source Writer creates
(on the right hand side of your screen) the correctly formatted footnote
and bibliography citation based on the information you have filled in.
We all still have to decide on a personal level how we want our Master
Source list to read and function.  We still have to figure out who the
author of a government document is, etc.  What we won't have to do is
agonize over the accepted form for the citation of footnotes and
bibliographies in any book we publish.

This is what I took away from Geoff's presentation.  I think what really
troubles many of us is knowing what information to put in each box.
Having been a librarian, I know how agonizing this is.  We had a
multi-volume work to help determine who the author of a work is, the
publisher, etc.  If we were only dealing with published books this
wouldn't be so difficult but what is confusing (for genealogists) is
working with documents whose authorship is not always clear (to me,
anyway).

I have studied - and use - the method that Geoff explains on the dvd
Ultimate Guide to Sources.  More about this can also be found under tips
(go down to Source Citations) on the Legacy Home page.  Using this
consistently has gotten easier and I am happy with my sources.

RE: [LegacyUG] Error in new family File

2008-03-27 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Walter,

The incorrect information in your family file could result from a couple
of things:

1. Importing a GEDCOM file that has the bad information in it.
2. Merging records with discrepant information.

Many times in these situations you have to do genealogical research to
find the correct information.

Ron,

Actually, running Potential Problems is how I first noticed the
incorrect
date as it showed all children being born before marriage of parents but
how
is that going to tell me where the date came from or other dates or
information that may have been dropped? If incorrect information can
appear,
then I assume other information can also disappear.

The old Family File did not have this date in it, I just rechecked it,
and I
suppose the error took place in Exporting the old family file to a new
family file rather than updating Legacy 5 Deluxe to Legacy 6 Deluxe?

I expect I will just revert to the old Family File.

Thanks,

RE: [LegacyUG] Backing Up Legacy Files

2008-03-20 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Heather,

Amen to what you say. I have talked to a Legacy user on the Gulf Coast
who lost her home to Hurricane Katrina. She lost her CD backups, which
she made faithfully and put in a case right beside her computer. I also
know a person who have had his home burglarized and his computer stolen.
So hard drive failures aren’t the only thing that computer users need to
plan for.

Click on Options (top line), then select the Locations tab.

What is the Default location of family files?

What is the Location of temporary files?

If you are running Legacy from anywhere other than the C: drive, you may
need to set these to the proper locations.

If you're running Legacy in the default location (C:\Legacy), the Temp
folder may be missing or damaged.

John

As I suspected John, it was my typing error. The exact error was
Error
 3044. C:\Legacy\Temp\LG~0.TMP is not a valid path.

 The path should look like:

Please verify what you have and report back.
Yes, the *exact* punctuation used is important.

 John

I have been using Legacy Deluxe for a few weeks now, and generally
I
 like
it. However, after several days of frustrating attempts to retry
and
 work
around this problem, I am at the end of my rope trying to backup my
 family
files. I am using build (6.0.0.190) of the deluxe version.

When I first started using Legacy a few weeks ago, everything was
 fine.
  I
backed up a few times (both family and media files) with no
problem.
 Now
  I
am getting errors whenever I try any number of techniques to backup
 either
of those files. I started with the obvious- file- backup family
 file.
I've tried using different locations, and even tried it on two
 different
computers, and I keep getting Backup Error 504; cannot create
 temporary
  file.

When I try to back up my media files, I get a different but just as
consistent error: Error 3044. C/legacy/temp/LG~0.tmp is not a
valid
 path.
Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are
connected to the server on which the file resides. I am aware of
 typical
naming conventions and used an older convention
legacybackup20080317,
 or
  LegacyBackup2008_03_17 and neither works.

I spent an hour and a half tonight just trying to backup my files,
and
 I'm
really aggravated now. I read the help files, searched the
usergroup
archives, and couldn't find anything close to this problem. Please
 HELP.
  Thanks, Dawn Del Guercio

RE: [LegacyUG] Word Document

2008-02-11 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Barbara,

The RTF format is a generic word processing document that you can open
in MS Word.

To produce this type of report output format, click the option near the
bottom-right corner of the reports that support this output type. When
you do, the Print icon turns into Save icon. Clicking this icon prompts
you for a filename and location for saving the rich text format file.
It will have a file extension of .rtf. When the file has been saved,
Legacy offers to open it with your default word processor if you want to
view it or work with it.

With the RTF file open in MS Word you can edit it to add additional
information and pictures. Index and Table of Content codes are even
embedded in the RTF file so that MS Word can generate these items and
refer to the correct page numbers.

The recommended order for working in the RTF file is:

1. First, make any changes/additions you want to the body of the book.
2. When done editing the book, then generate the Table of Contents using
the MS Word's Index and Tables feature. (Click on Insert and select
Reference Index and Tables.)
3. The very last step is to generate the Index using the MS Word's Index
and Tables feature. (Click on Insert and select Reference Index and
Tables.)

This order is very important because the page numbering for the Table of
Contents and the Index won't be right if you do them before making
changes/additions to the book.

Good Luck,

RE: [LegacyUG] RIN number changes

2008-02-01 Thread Jim Terry/Support

RIN and MRIN numbers are assigned in sequential order as you enter
individuals and marriages in the family file. There can be no duplicate
numbers because they are unique.

When you import a GEDCOM file into an existing family file, the RINs and
MRINs that were in the GEDCOM file renumbered, with the exception of
possibly filling in any blank RINs in the existing file.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Please help - doubles

Hello Everyone,

I know it is a bad to ask for help. My thoughts and prayers are with
you.

I need some help. Hope this makes sense as I explain.

I created a new Legacy family file. Then I exported multiple Legacy
family
files to that file to make a larger file.

I connected parents to the child, wives to husbands etc.

Everything seemed to have worked.

I was able to run an ancestor book. No problem.

Then I ran a pedigree chart report. A warning appeared.

Looking at the archives I figured out it was an endless loop.

I went back and cleaned up the file. I thought. But I still seem to
develop
multiple marriages.

How do I merge the double marriages to make one marriage to fix my
problem?

Same spouses, 2 marriages. No people are doubles.

One marriage has the child I merged to the parents the other marriage
has
the rest of the children.

I still have a few children that I need to connect to their parents.

How do I connect the last few children to the parents properly to avoid
this
again?

I have Legacy 6 Deluxe, latest build, XP service pack 2.

Thank You,
Debbie Freeman

RE: [LegacyUG] Renumbering RINS

2008-01-23 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Michele,

There is no way to quickly/automatically renumber all your RINs in the
manner you want (closest relatives, lowest RINs). You will have to do
it one RIN at a time. (To renumber RINs, click on Tools on the menu bar
and select Renumber RINs.)

Is there any way to totally renumber the RINS starting from scratch? I
imported two seperate files from two FTM files and they are now in
Legacy.
The problem is, the RIN numbers are sort of scattered all around. I
would
expect my closest relatives to have the lowest number RIN (direct line)
but
they don't necessarily have the RINs I think they should have

Re: [LegacyUG] census information

2007-05-03 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Carol,

There are some work arounds which are simple to do once you understand a few
principles. Please keep in mind that Notes screens and reports are two
different things. What you line up in columns in Notes won't necessarily line
up in columns in a report. Things like page margins, font styles and sizes,
etc. all affect the appearance of reports. In addition, font styles and sizes
and screen size make a difference in the Notes screen as well.

Method 1: Courier Font for the appearance of columns in Notes

Background:

Courier is a monospaced slab serif typeface designed to resemble the output
from a strike-on typewriter The design of the original Courier New typeface
was commissioned in the 1950s by IBM for use in typewriters... and it soon
became a standard font used throughout the typewriter industry. As a monospaced
font, it has recently found renewed use in the electronic world in situations
where columns of characters must be consistently aligned. [Source: Wikipedia,
Courier (typeface), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courier_(font)]

Changing Fonts in Legacy

1. To change Legacy's font settings, click on Options on the menu bar and
select Customize.
2. Next click on the Fonts tab and change the Screen Fonts for Notes to Courier
New (the default font sizes should be left as they are).
3. Click the Save button in the lower left corner of the Fonts screen to exit.
4. Click the Help button if you need further guidance.

Method 2: Inserting Tabs

Another way of creating the appearance of columns in Notes is to insert tab
spaces. (This does not rely on using the Courier font.) Tabs can be inserted in
Notes by pressing Ctrl+Tab on your keyboard. This will help line up text at
regular intervals.

You can view where tabs are inserted, but before doing this you must SAVE and
then reopen the Notes screen. (If you don't save first, the tabs you insert
will be undone!) Next press Ctrl+Z on the keyboard and the embedded codes for
the tab spaces will show as «tab».

Is there any way to make nice, neat columns for displaying census information
entered through a Legacy note on the web? If so, does doing it that way cause
other forms of display (i.e., printed reports) to look weird?

  TIA,

  Carol

Mike,

What you write is exactly why I put my warning right up front in my first

Jim, I'm sure you're quite correct with how you describe these
operations, but I fail to see why TAB characters would achieve the
desired effect.

To the best of my understanding, a TAB character is supposed to emulate
the effect of a tab stop on a typewriter. Consequently, the 'length' of
a TAB must vary dependent upon the selected font (and its' size), and
the position of the next tab stop in relation to the current cursor
position.

I don't think you can set tab stop positions in a Notes field.
Therefore, a TAB will only work consistently when it has a fixed length,
i.e. when a monospaced font style is used and can thus be defined as a
certain number of character positions. By extension, the same monospaced
font style and size would need to be used when printing Notes in order
to maintain the desired appearance.

I don't see anywhere on the Fonts tab where the size of a monospaced TAB
can be defined. Neither do I see any means of setting a standard set of
tabstops across the width of a page. As a matter of personal choice, I
absolutely detest the seemingly default MS tab size of 8 characters, it
tends to stretch tables out unnecessarily. My preference, when coding in
C, is for a 4 character TAB.

I guess what I'm really saying is that whilst TABs and a monospaced font
can achieve what the OP was after, it currently takes a lot of trial and
error to enter data in a table and have it appear as desired.
