I have a cousin that married, divorced, then remarried the same
individual several years later. Should I treat this as two separate
marriages or merely add divorce and remarriage events? I keep
vacillating back and forth so would like to hear how some of our
professionals handle this situation.

[LegacyUG] Problem with font settings

2009-10-09 Thread Ken Carkeet

Greetings!,

I can't get Legacy to obey the font settings I have selected for my Family
Group Sheets. I am using Courier New, 10, bold, as the settings for my Data,
Notes and Sources in the fonts sections of my Family Group Sheets. All the
other sections work fine except for the Data part of the report. Legacy will
not adhere to the "Bold" setting for "Data" it ignores it! Is this a bug? Or
is it supposed to be like that? Does anyone know of a way around this?

I have to use the bold setting as the Courier New font is to light and I
prefer the font to be a little darker.

Thank you for you help.

Regards,

Kenneth Carkeet

Re: [LegacyUG] REF file within zipped Legacy Backup

2009-10-04 Thread Ken
Thank you Dennis Kowallek & CE Wood, you were absolutely right. When I
turned 'Set
Relationships' back on through the Tools menu the backup file size returned to
its
previous level.I was aware that I had turned it off a while back but never
connected that action to the file extension 'rel'. Talk about having a red
face!
Sorry to have added to the number of queries.

Thanks again.

I believe the .rel file is where Legacy keeps RELATIONSHIPs The .rel
file was introduced with V7. Have you recently cleared your
relationships? Maybe this would cause Legacy to delete the file. In
either case, I don't think it is anything to worry about. If you set the
relationships it will probably reappear.

[LegacyUG] REF file within zipped Legacy Backup

2009-10-03 Thread Ken
Greetings,

Does anyone on this list know what the REL file represents within Legacy?I
recently noticed that the size of my total backup file had dropped from where
it was
a couple of weeks ago. When doing a comparison of the files that make up my
current
backup to those in the earlier one I noted that the REL file which was part of
the
zipped backup two weeks ago was no longer included in the current zipped
backup.
Is this serious?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book Display Irritation

2009-09-28 Thread Ken
Hi Jenny and Ron,

I am glad you have both been able to replicate the problem in the Descendant
Book whereby the first line of the main (direct line) individuals is
unnecessarily shortened by Legacy. At the outset I thought it may have
been something I was doing and not the fault of the program. As Jenny has
pointed out it would appear that the program is incorrectly limiting the
first line to a reduced number of characters.

Ron, I believe you are right in saying that it affects the first line of
each new generation but it wasn't very obvious in mine until the 4th
generation and, as I mentioned in an earlier email, only when one elects to
check off (include) 'Show line back to starting person'.

Having now confirmed that this is a weakness in the program, what is
required to have to problem corrected?

Thank you both for you helping me with this. It's greatly appreciated,
especially as I see you spending so much of your time assisting so many of
us.

Jenny, Ken,

Having done more work on this problem today, I can now confirm that it does
affect the first line after the new generation. It is just much more
noticable when the generation number is included.

The bug has been reported.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book Display Irritation

2009-09-27 Thread Ken
Hello Dennis, I did as you suggested, as I do happen to have another
printer, but unfortunately it did not resolve the problem.I even tried
reverting back to the default fonts without favourable results, as the first
line for the main (direct line) individuals are still being cut well short
of the margin and dropping the balance of the sentence to the second line.
What I find particularly puzzling is I have no control over the structure of
the sentence except for including or excluding the individuals relationship
line back to the starting person. It is when I elect to include that
bracketed relationship that the problem occurs and becomes magnified
commencing with the third, fourth, fifth, etc. generations.

Thanks for your interest.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book Display Irritation

2009-09-27 Thread Ken
Hello Ron,

Thank you for replying so quickly. I am using the identical format you
have laid out and am seeing the problem on the Preview screen but it also
carries over when I save to PDF.I do have sources for all my entries but
suppressed the viewing of them so when I extracted the examples from the PDF
the source numbers wouldn't cloud my examples with more superscript numbers.
Also I am not inserting lines where names are missing. In the example I
did not start a new generation on a new page but even when I do the same
situation exists. I should also point out that it happens whether I run
the book from the Publising Centre or direct from the Report menu>All
Reports (Books and Others)>Descendants.

As I mentioned in my previous email, the problem appears to become more
pronounced when viewing the fourth and fifth generations or thereafter but
always only on the first line for main entry individuals. Also as I
pointed out, the problem only happens when I elect to have the book reflect
the relationship of the individual to previous generations. That is, when
I check the box 'Show line back to starting person'.

Thanks again for your interest in helping me to resolve this. P.S. I'm
sorry for not sending my initial email in Plain Text but when I tried my
examples which I pasted from the PDF got all messed up.

Ken,

I am unable to reproduce this but there are so many settings for the report
that mine may well be different to yours.

I have selected the Modified Register Report for the Descendant Book Report
(not the Narrative). Additionally I am using Individuals with Children
(Standard Format). I am also only looking at the Preview, is this where you
are looking or are your referring to a print or some other format? Are you
starting each generation on a new page?

You are clearly showing sources, so how are you displaying them, oh, and are
you inserting lines where names are missing?

I am very uncertain as to whether it will be possible for us to reproduce
this, if it is dependant on a specific combination of settings - unless we
are lucky.

Sorry that I seem to be so pessimistic, but without being able to reproduce
it I have little to suggest.

Greetings All,

I am fairly new to this list so don't know if my type of query has been
addressed before. However, I cannot find any reference to it in the
archives.

I've run into a Descendant Book display situation which, although trivial,
does annoy me.

Whenever I select the 'Show line back to starting person' option, the first
line of wording for main entry individuals (i.e. the individuals with the
generation number against them) does not fill the line. The balance of the
sentence drops to the next line. This only seems to be a problem
commencing with the 4th generation. In some cases will drop the
superscript number and closing bracket to line two when there is close to
two inches of room still available on the first line. I have changed
margins but it really doesn't correct the problem, it simply cause a
different stream of words to fall to the next line.

I've shown a couple of examples below but as this is an email layout the
superscript number appears as a regular number but I hope you will
understand what I am trying to say. As you can see, in both cases there is
almost two inches remaining on the first lines so why in the first example
was the word 'born' delegated to the second line and why, in the second
example, was the superscript number 2 which should be attached to William
Frederick dropped to the second line?

I should mention that the same situation arises when I run the Multiple Line
Descendant Report but does not occur if I uncheck 'Show line back to
starting person'.As you know the program applies the verbiage so I'm in
a quandary as to what I can do. Hoping someone can help.

[LegacyUG] Using full christian name in reports

2009-09-23 Thread Ken
Greetings,

I am a Legacy 7 Deluxe user and would appreciate it if someone could help me
with the following. I have searched the help area and the archive postings
without success.

As many of my ancestors seem to have common first names, I would like the
marriage narrative to use both the first and middle name for all individuals in
the Ancestor Report.

For example lets assume I have a John Charles Smith who is married to Jane Emil
Doe.

At present the narrative in the Ancestor Report reads - John married Jane Emily
Doe

I would like it to read- John Charles married Jane Emily Doe

Thank you.

[LegacyUG] Line spacing between title and sub titile on photo album

2009-07-28 Thread Ken Carkeet

Greetings!

Can someone please tell me if it's possible to increase the line spacing
between the title and subtitle when printing out a page from the photo album
in *.PDF format. I have found it necessary to format the main title in all
upper case letters as the tails on some normal lower case letters like "y"
and "g" tend to overwrite slightly some of the letters in the subtitle. If I
could only increase the space between the title and subtile just a little
bit then this problem would be solved.

Thanks for reading my request.

[LegacyUG] Children's Surname

Can someone please tell me if there is a way to include children's surnames
when making a "Descendant Narrative" report. I have a situation where a

children's Christian names from the relationship. I want to be able to show
the fact that the children carry their mother's surname. One can not tell
from the report what the correct surnames should be.

  Family History News Update

Here is some important information about a newly certified software
application that will work directly with the new.familysearch.org Web site to
prepare ancestral ordinances for the temple.

RootsMagic 4 is the first software affiliate product that is certified to
reserve and submit ancestral names to temples to print LDS temple name cards
using new FamilySearch Web services.

As an application that is certified to reserve ordinances, RootsMagic 4 has
the ability to link people in your desktop genealogy file with matching people
on the new.familysearch.org Web site. Once linked, a simple click on the temple
icon next to a person's name will display that person's official temple
ordinances, complete with dates, temple name, and status. Incomplete temple
ordinances may then be reserved to be performed at a later time. Your own file
may also be updated with ordinances that are already completed. RootsMagic 4
can select reserved ordinances and print a Family Ordinance Request (FOR) form
to take to the temple. Once at the temple, a worker will scan the bar code on
the form and print all the desired temple name ordinance cards. Once the
ordinances have been completed, RootsMagic will be updated with your ancestors'
new ordinance status.

3. There are going to be a few people who have unsubscribed and will start to

We are trying to make the move late tonight or early tomorrow.

[LegacyUG] WOW! Thank you, we really appreciate all of you!

2008-06-08 Thread Ken McGinnis

To All of you Awesome Legacy Users,

We would like to thanks for everyone's support and patience as we worked to get
Legacy released. We did have a plan which we felt was a great plan. However,
even with all the extra people that we hired to help we have been totally
overwhelmed. We have had very successful releases in the past and so we
thought we knew what was coming. Boy did we underestimate things by a long,
long ways. In the first 48 hours we have had 10 times more orders than with any
other release. We have had a couple sales days that blow away anything we could
have ever dreamed of. We have so many orders that we can't even process them.
Things are fairly automated and can usually be done very quickly but we have so
many orders coming in that they are staking up everywhere. We have never seen
anything like this before in our company's 25+ years of being in business. We
have several people working the phones and several doing email all day long
(literally 24 hours a day). All we can say is THANK YOU!!! Thanks to all of
you for your purchases you have made! We really hope each of you enjoy the new
features we have worked so hard to add to Legacy. You deserve the best and we
hope we can continue to earn your support for many years to come.

Last night and this morning I was working on scrounging up computers from
everywhere I could find them and working on getting them added to our network
and ordering system so we could add additional people to help out right now with
all the extra orders. We hate to ask but if you don't have your order yet if
you could be patient for a couple more days before calling that might help us
get things done a little quicker because we can have people working on getting
the orders out instead of individually answering phone calls and emails.

Thanks for helping us experience such an overwhelmingly successful release of
Legacy 7.0. All of you are so awesome with all you are doing to help each other
out. Keep up the good work and we'll work hard to get your orders out to you
quickly.

Wow! I had better get back to work :)

Thank you!

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 6 and Legacy 7

2008-06-06 Thread Ken McGinnis
The first install is considered a new install and you are asked where you want
to install to. Any future installs know where you first installed to and is
considered an update to that Legacy. To move Legacy you cannot simply copy
things from one folder or drive over to a new location. If you try to simply
move the files the next update will still go back to the original locatin.

There is a small trick that you can override the way the setup works if you
need to move Legacy. It's simple. Download the Legacy setup once again from
our website and save it to your computer somewhere for example your desktop.
Then rename the setup you just downloaded to the name of LegacyNew.exe and then
run it. When the setup starts it checks it's own name and if it's called
LegacyNew.exe it will run as if it was a new install and you will be prompted
where you want to install to.

I already installed to different folders. Now, although, I moved the .usr

to install" step was skipped on reinstallation and I'm back where I was without
my customizations.
  Any suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Installing version 7

2008-06-04 Thread Ken McGinnis
It's just simpler for the average person.Since v7 converts your family files
the only way to keep v6 on your computer and to also have v7 would be you now
have to copy family files to new locations. For example you would have to copy
family files from C:\Legacy\Data (v6 files) to C:\Legacy7\Data (v7 files).

If you have pictures in C:\Legacy\Pictures the v7 files will still work. But,
a few months from now when you want to get rid of v6 from your computer because
you never user it any longer you will not be able to remove the v6 folder
because it still contains the pictures. Of course you can move the pictures,
video files, sound files, and other data type items like these over to your v7
folders. But, now that they are moved you now have to go into Options,
Customize, Locations tab, and click the view Current List of Multimedia
Locations" button and form this screen start changing each of the folders from
the old location to the new location. Or, get tricky and do a global Search
and Replace on PicturePaths.

Most of the user settings will be retained and a normal user of Legacy simply
installs it and continues to work on famiy history. They don't have to re-setup
everything to their liking.

I guess it's just several small things that for probably a lot of people on this
list installing to a new folder would be a piece of cake but for many users who
are not very famiiar with computers and getting around software I feel it is
easier for them to just install right over 6.0 which is where it will default
to.

I simply recommended users install over 6.0 which from our point of view
simplifies tech support calls. The end user only have one copy of Legacy.
Legacy was designed to be installed over the previous version and simply work.

If you know how to work with files and are pretty good working with Legacy go
ahead and install to a separate folder as it's really not that big of deal and
you will be able to quickly figure out any small thing that needs to be done.

Either way is fine with me, you choose.

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Not fair Millennia!

2008-05-16 Thread Ken McGinnis

All it takes is for Millennia to put the program on an ftp
server and add a single download link on their website.

That's true if all we were placing up there was the Standard Edition but what
fun would that be if you couldn't play with all the cool new Deluxe Edition
features. Also, we would kind of like to sell the Deluxe Edition and make it
available at the same time as the Standard Edition and we have a bunch of work
to re-vamp our website, redo our online store, finish up the training videos,
get CDs, work on press releases, compile mailing list to send out the
announcements (so it's fair) and work on our ordering system to support the new
products, customer numbers, email lists, etc.

Those who purchase in last 10 months have already paid for Legacy 7.0 Deluxe and
really deserve to have it first. We want to get Legacy ready and available to
everyone just as much as you want it. I have just put in about 20 hours of
work and am headed to bed for a couple hours before I get up and do another 20
hour day. We are working hard to get it out to all of you.

Please, it's coming. We ask for just a little more patience and understanding.

[LegacyUG] v7 release

2008-05-12 Thread Ken McGinnis

Hi Legacy Users,

The software is mostly ready. We are trying hard to finish a couple items and
fix a few problems. Because we are working so hard on Legacy right now we
haven't had time to work on the required website changes that would be needed
for a pre-release for all of you on the LegacyUserGroup list. We value all of
you on this list and feel you are our most loyal users and we really do know and
understand how much all of you do on this list with helping other users who are
out there. We thank you all for all that you do. We are working hard to get
things ready and the coming release is mostly just working out the logistics of
such a huge release. We have had to hire a bunch of extra people to help with
all the shipping and we are going to roll things out in the best order that we
can handle and support. We know all of you on this list are very anxious and it
won't be much longer.

The pre-release this week at NGS was kind of a no-brainer. We simply take some
product to the show and sell it. It doesn't require any work on websites,
online store, backend ordering system, mailing lists, press releases, training
videos and many other things that take a lot of time and have nothing to do with
the software being ready.

Early next week we will begin shipping Legacy to all of those who have purchased
Legacy over the last 10 months. These are those we promised that if they would
buy v6 they would get a free v7 when released. These people have already paid
for v7.The numbers for those who will be mailed a free v7 are huge and just
this project and is going to take some time. We have felt these users really
should be the first to get Legacy and once all of these have been shipped we
plan to go live with v7 on our website.

We are very excited about the new features and feel this is going to be a great
release.

Thanks

[LegacyUG] Problem formating photo album pages

2008-03-07 Thread Ken Carkeet

Greetings!

I have a problem with Legacy's photo album. I am unable to creat photo pages
in landscape format. Legacy is creating borders in portrait format and
superimposing them onto a landscape format. Can anyonw else confirm that
this is a bug or am I doing something wrong.

Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

[LegacyUG] Progress report re backup problem

2008-02-20 Thread Ken Carkeet
Greetings!

My backup problems have been resolved. I would like to say thank you to
everyone who responded by offering advice and assistance in how to resolve
my backup problems - Thank you very much.

The problem seems to have occurred sometime during the primary
download/update, which was done using legacy's internal update function. The
secondary update process was performed by downloading the full Legacy setup
and installation file, and installing that file over the old one. Anyway
this process worked and has rectified my backup problems. I have encountered
problems in the past using Legacy's internal update function. Perhaps, I
should stop using this feature in future updates?

Kenneth Carkeet from Queensland.

[LegacyUG] Backup problem fixed

2008-02-20 Thread Ken Carkeet

Greetings!

There is definitely a problem with the latest Legacy update (6.0.0.188). I
have been trying all afternoon to get Legacy to create backup family files
without success. No matter what I tried Legacy just would not make any *.zip
backup files. There are no error messages to warn you that Legacy has failed
to create a backup of your files. If you create a backup then go to
C:\Legacy\Data you will find that Legacy didn't backup your file. I
eventually installed an older version of Legacy (6.0.0.0) over the new one
and the backup problem was immediately rectified. However, the general
information screen showed that I was still on version 6.0.0.188 and that I
was still using the latest update. There's something funny going on here!!
Shouldn't the general information screen tell me that I was using the older
version and not the newer one? I'll leave this one for the experts to figure
out. Meanwhile I'm just glad that I can now create backups again. When the
programmers have fixed up the problem with the newest update I will then
download the new update and try again :-)

[LegacyUG] Family File Backups Not working

2008-02-19 Thread Ken Carkeet

Greetings,

I have just completed updating Legacy to the latest version. Now I have
discoverd that I can no longer backup my family files. Legacy indicates that
it is saving my files to C:\Legacy\Data. However, when I look in that
directory my backup files are not there. The same thing happens when I try
to backup to an external hard drive - there is no backup file to be found. I
tried the computer's search function to see if I could locate the backup
file. The search functions locates a shortcut to the file but when I click
on the file to open it I get an error message which says that the file can't
be found. I tried using Legacy's file repair tool but that didn't fix the
problem. I now find myself in the position where I can't make backup of my
family files.

Has anyone else encountered this problem. It was working fine before I
updated Legacy. Can someone please advise I am using Vista Home Premium
DOS

Dawn and Connie, thank you for your interest and replies to my RIN sort

evenually resolved the issue. I'm not sure it was the right way but it did
work.Connie, you may want to see if it will resolve your sort problem in
the Index view.

Once again, thanks to all. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hello Jim,

Thanks for the quick reply.

That's right it was not happening when I clicked on the RIN button. When
in the Index view screen I clicked on the RIN button and all individuals
sorted from surname sequence to RIN except for the six individuals for
whom the RINs I had changed. Even though the numbers had changed they
were still sloted in the spot of their old number. However, I was just
writing the list as I received your message to say I think I found the
solution.

While in the Index view screen I clicked on the Options button (top right)
and selected Change Sort / Search to User ID and that slotted the
changed RINs into the proper place.I also noted that if I select the
same Change Sort option again it slots the half dozen changed RINs back to
their original placement (out of order sequence) once again, without
affecting the sequence of the unaltered RINs. I then selected the Change
Sort option for a third time and the altered RINs moved back into their
appropriate sequence so all appears to now be okay.

Thanks again.

[LegacyUG] Altered RINs don't sort

2008-02-12 Thread Ken

Greetings,

I have a problem when trying to sort by RINs on the View screen.

I switched the numbering for several individuals via the Renumbering RINs
dialog box within the Tools menu. For example, I changed the RIN for
Lilian from 35 to 4 and the RIN for Graham from 4 to 35.All changes
appear okay but when I sort on the RIN numbers the ones I changed still fall
in the old position. That is, Lilian (RIN 4) falls in the 35th position,
etc. even though it shows as number 4.The ones I changed are the only
ones out of sequence.I should mention, before making these half dozen
changes all RINs were automatically assigned when I converted to Legacy
about six months ago.

Does anyone know what I may have done wrong?

RE: [LegacyUG] Problem with Descendant Chart - Cremation label not showing up

2007-12-15 Thread Ken Carkeet
 Greetings!

My Descendant Chart is located in Reports>Descendant Chart. In mine, Report
Options>Include Tab everything is greyed out except marriage date and place,
include spouse's parents, RINs & MRINs and user ID. Cremations are set in
the user screens but they still show up as burials in the descendant
report. The descendant chart does not acurately reflect the cremation field
labels in the report. It substitutes bur. for cremated. This must surely be
a bug. I wonder if anyone else has noticed this problem.

Ken,

Where is the Descendant Chart you are using. I ask because on mine
Reports>Descendant>Report Options>Include all mattersrelating to death are
greyed out. If this is the one you are using then I seem to have a fault
which needs correcting!

I tested, therefore, using the Descendant Narrative Report. Like you, I have
cremation set in the Individual Screen and it showed up correctly in the
report.

Hi Ken,

"Between ... and" and "From ... to" Dates are very useful in Events - so
keep them in mind.

As you've seen, they're not so useful for BDM dates because of the way
they display in other places.

Cathy & Ken,

I thought that "or" would give a bad date as it's not on my list of
alternatives in Legacy (or at least I haven't seen it).

I also kjnew there was a major reason for me dropping "between" not related
to Ken's current observations, but couldn't think of it at the time. It is
that in Pedigree Web Pages the dates in the "link boxes" become corrupted.
That is to say they read "John Smith (bet 1794-)" ie the last date is
omitted. (And I've just checked it :-) ).

Hi Ken,
Where are you getting "from between"? That would be a bug and I
haven't seen it - which doesn't mean it isn't there. Which report?

When I enter a Between date I get:
Ebenezer was born between 1803 and 1806 in ...

If you enter a date as
bet 1803-1806
the entry changes to
between 1803 and 1806
and that is what is used in sentences.

If you enter
1803-1806
it is picked as
from 1803 to 1806
in sentences.

Or you can enter the "from" in the date field - from/to is allowed as
is between/and

You can use "or" - it doesn't give a bad date warning - but it
doesn't read as well in sentences:
"Ebenezer was born 1803 or 1804." instead of "Ebenezer was born in
1803 or 1804."
That may be a difference in the way English is used in various countries.

I don't think there is a way around the problem of the way the life
range shows if you've used a between or from date for a birth. I'd be
inclined to use "about" and indicate the boundaries of that with
reasons in the birth notes.

When using FTM I would frequently enter combined dates for births

it is not necessary to have the word 'from' precede 'between
1855-1856' on some reports. In other words the reports read Joe
Doe was born from between 1855 and 1856.

To try and make this rather lengthy email brief, I experimented with
various ways of recording such dates and found when I entered them

the child's name would read 'Between 1855-1870'.Accurately stated, but
just looks odd. I also feel it is not necessary to have the word 'from'
precede 'between 1855-1856' on some reports. In other words the reports
read Joe Doe was born from between 1855 and 1856.

To try and make this rather lengthy email brief, I experimented with various
ways of recording such dates and found when I entered them with the word
'or' in between the years, such as '1855 or 1856' all looked great on both
the Family View screen and the reports. My question, does anyone know if
this will cause me problems down the road.As I said, I'm a newbee to
this program.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [LegacyUG] Surname formatting part II - SOLUTION

2007-11-23 Thread Ken

Hi all,

I also just recently transferred over to Legacy from FTM but had no problem
at all with AKAs.They were all slotted in the right spot following
importation through GEDCOM.Perhaps you didn't have the AKAs recorded in
the right place in FTM. They should have been placed in the Lineage /
Adopt section as there was a specific spot for AKAs (nicknames) in that
section.

As far as where to place them in Legacy, I believe if you bring up the
Family image page you will find a display of icons just below the persons
name. Select the one with 3 heads.

Hope this helps.

I can find the alternate names, but I don't have a clue about the proper
format for nicknames in Legacy :-). I know I don't like the Alternate Name
wording when applied to nicknames i.e. "Another name for Jacob was
Wildcat." I tried adding a nickname event so I could control the words but
that prints under "Noted events in his life were:" which seems a little
stiff for a nickname. As I recall, I had problems with the way FTM handled
nicknames also. I wish the programmers would just provide a real nickname
slot. I have a lot more nicknames than I do true alternate names.

Thanks--workedso now that "begs the question"--what is the proper
format

for recording nicknames in Legacy. For example, if someone was named May
Elizabeth Scruggs, but she was always called "Mayme", in Family Tree
Maker,
I entered her name as May Elizabeth (Mayme) Scruggs. Is that not the
proper
format in Legacy? I know about the AKA place and was using it for names
they

might be found under when researching (rather than just a place for the
"went by")--is that the only place you would put "Mayme" (no quotes).

Re: [LegacyUG] Baptism event to Christening field

2007-11-21 Thread Ken

Hi Cathy,

Thank you for your helpful reply. It set me on the right path and allowed
me to switch all of my Family Tree Maker baptism events to the Christening
field in Legacy. As I prefer to use the word baptism, I then relabelled
the Christening field in Legacy to read Baptism per your instruction.

To accomplish the above, it was necessary for me to import my data from FTM
Gedcom once again, using the Customise option provided during the
importation process as you suggested. This approach not only allowed me to
switch all baptism events to christening so they would fall into Legacy's
preferred field, but it also allowed me to determine how place names and
descriptions should be handled under Legacy for FTM events such as
Residences, Occupations, Funerals, etc.Family Tree Maker used the event
Location / Comment field for both addresses and descriptions depending upon
the event so, I assume without using the customise Gedcom feature during
importation, Legacy would have dumped both event narrations and place names
into the same field and treated all the same for reporting, etc.

Cathy, my file of approximately 2,000+ individuals is not that large
compared to many but it sure would have taken me an awful long time to
resolve these issues without your kind assistance. It is greatly
appreciated.

Sincerely,
Ken Marlow, in a snowy Ottawa, Canada

Hi Ken,

In Options > Customise - Data Format tab - you can choose to use "Baptism"
instead of "Christening". I do.

However, I think it may still be labelled as Christening in a Gedcom. I'm
not a Gedcom expert.

You may need to import your FTM Gedcom again and choose to customise so
you can map the Baptism to Christening if it is being imported as a
separate event or you may find that changing the term in Options >
Customise is enough to get it to import into the right place.

BUT you mention the Description field. The main Baptism/Christening fields
don't include a Description field so you would lose this.

When you swap an Alt Baptism or Baptism Event with Baptism in the main 4
fields, everything except the Description is swapped - notes, sources,
place, date. The Description field gets left behind.

This is such a little thing you might not even notice it, but I do and
it really bugs me (pardon the pun!)

In the Assigned Sources for .." window, with the Detail open you see
headings for Detail:, Detail Comments:, Recorded Date:: and File ID.

Notice the two colons after Recorded Date? And no colon after File ID?

Like I said, such a *little* thing, but being such a little thing
perhaps will be no more than a couple of minutes of a programmer's time
to put it right.

[LegacyUG] Picture borders re publishing centre

2007-06-26 Thread Ken Carkeet
G'day!

How do your get rid of borders around photographs? I have included an image on
the title page of a book being produced through the publishing centre. Legacy
is automatically generating a line border around the perimeter of the image I
don't want any borders around my photos, so how do I deselect this option? I
can't seen to find a way of doing this. Can someone please tell me if this can
be done. I am using heraldry type images and they look better without a border.

Kenneth Cakeet

Keith,

Did you download 118 OK? 117 Downloaded OK, 118 is the problem. I couldn't
download from within Legacy or from the website. I'm in a pickle. I'm
teaching Legacy for 3 hour tomorrow morning at our Computer Club. I have
117 on my computer and 110 on the laptop that I will use for the
demonstration. I would like to download the laptop to 117 but it doesn't
seem to be available. My husband and I have an ulcer between us trying to
get everything together for tomorrow.

I hope this problem is fixed soon! I may be up all night as it is. Our
Christmas Musical is at church tonight and we're singing.

By the way, I love the new coloring for the pedigree chart and the numbering
is fixed on the Publishing center...which is what I was waiting on.

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Download of v6.0.0.118 - server problems

I think there is a good chance this is just due to the volume of people
hitting the server at the same time. I'm in UK and downloaded early the
morning of the 7th and the speed was more than acceptable.

[LegacyUG] Server update

I thought our server company was going to send one more email out before they
actually moved our sever to their new data center but I didn't get one and then
it was to late to tell everyone what was going on. Our sever company is really
growing. They moved to a brand new building which is adding enough room that
they can add over 1000 new severs. I am glad they are doing well and I hope the
new data center will keep our bandwidth fast. The move was supposed to go a

I have tried downloaing the file numerous times but it keeps jamming
at different places. The error that appears says that the download
is corrupt. I am hesitant to run directly from the Internet since
Legacy is not codesigning their .exe file for security. However,
since my existing installation of Legacy is now blocked due to the
faulty download I tried anyways and received an error about a missing

Looks like the upgate needed a little more beta testing.

Re: [LegacyUG] Status?

2006-07-19 Thread Ken McGinnis

I made some changes this morning and it looks like
some of you are receiving mail again.   Because of all the problems
and not knowing how to fix them we ordered a new mail server that will be setup
early next week.   At this point I see some are getting email but I
have no way of knowing how many are not getting messages from us.
This has been very frustrating for us and I know all of you are tired of the
problems.   Thank you all for your patience while we try to solve all
the problems.
Thanks

RE: [LegacyUG] Error opening IGI search results data base

2006-06-22 Thread Ken Carkeet
Greetings.

Just want to let everyone know that my problem with regard to the above
mentioned error has been resolved. All I had to do was delete the said data
base and start again. The data base had somehow become corrupted.

Regards

Kenneth Carkeet

Something like that happened to me the other day. I tried several
things, but I think what finally got me working again was to reenter
my userid and password in Legacy under options. After I reentered my
Userid & Password, I tried a test, and it was successful. I was then
able to use the IGI search as normal.
Good luck.

[LegacyUG] Error opening IGI search results data base

2006-06-21 Thread Ken Carkeet
Something strange has just occurred I can no longer perform IGI searches
from within Legacy. Every time I try I get an error message which says,
"Error opening IGI search results data base. Unrecognised database format."
Can someone please tell me how I can resolve this situation? It was working
fine the other day when I last used it.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Cruise

2006-06-19 Thread Ken McGinnis

Last chance to cruise with us this year at great rates.

At midnight tomorrow (Tuesday) the rates will increase about $500 per person.
If you were thinking of coming you had better sign up quickly. We only have
three inside cabins left at our low reserved pricing and those will be gone or
priced substansially higher starting Wednessday.

We are still looking for a single woman to share an inside cabin with another
woman that is already booked on this cruise and we need one male to share a
balcony cabin with another male on this cruise. If you have a friend who is
single and would like to come join us we would welcome them.

On the bottom of this page there is a link to an order form.
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Cruise2006Info.asp
I would recommend also calling Christy at 1-888-505-6997.

Thanks

[LegacyUG] AKA Report Language

2006-06-16 Thread Ken Schurr

When I use the AKA feature the text in the
Descendant Narrative report says: "Another name for John is Bud." Is
it possible to change that text to something like "John was known as Bud"?

I don't speak for Legacy, but I suspect that Digest Mode was a feature
offered by the old ISP who hosted this mailing list under contract for
Legacy. My guess is that this new ISP does not currently offer the
option of a Digest Mode.

P.S. The archives for the new mailing list address appear to have been
moved to...

Millennia needs to change the link at the bottom of these messages.
