Re: [LegacyUG] Sources in Family Tree

2007-07-10 Thread Sandra Tyler Duncan
Ahh, here comes my two cents and a question. I use LDS data knowing full
well that it is the result of many inputs from many persons. I also use
www.donnorman.com family files the same way, knowing it too comes from many
sources and I am hoping to learn the best way to enter these two iffy
sources. I say iffy but they both have given me some very good information
and leads. Does any one know if there is a way to correctly state these two
sources so that any reader other than myself knows that I consider it to be
IFFY? Maybe a quote from EVIDENCE??

ungrateful we are,

Subject: [LegacyUG] Sources in Family Tree

In using Research Guidance, I am immediately taking to Family Tree, which I
think is and LDS site. It gives me some data but not the source of the
data!

It does give me the names snail-mail addresses of the people who submitted
the info but not the date of the submission or the sources of their
information.

Everyone knows that the validity of the source is of highest importance in
establishing the validity of the data so I don't understand why a website
related to the LDS doesn't show the sources of the info -- since the LDS is
so-o-o involved in genealogy and has done so much work in preserving copies
of original records.

How do you handle this kind of thing?

Thanks!

Pat H

Re: [LegacyUG] ? Living Relatives

2007-07-08 Thread Sandra Tyler Duncan
Yes Phil but I personally believe that LEGACY is the best genealogy program
around for removing data on living persons, my first time to post my data
gave me a real shock when I saw my children and grandchildren's names and

Subject: [LegacyUG] ? Living Relatives

Slightly OT but is being discuuused regulary regarding Legacy files

I am at loss to understand what all the secrecy is about regarding
 living relatives!
I have no problem with the concept of removing data that is personal
(Addresses, phone numbers etc), or data that could be embarrassing (such
as Mary Smith has an illigitimate son to Fred Blaggs. Jack Smith
served 6 months for car theft etc)
But that Mary Smith is the daughter of John and Jane Smith in
Dullesville is a fact known to everyone in the family and everyone in
the town at least. Why the need for secrecy? If the personal details of
Mary, John and Jane who are living are removed, then why would they
scream if 2nd cousin Peter puts the fact thet they are his family online?
What s being revealed that is not already public access? And that any
private investigator worth his salt could find out without getting out
of his chair -but why would he want to?

Any of us who has been involved in Genealogy/Family History for a short
time knows that one of the first things you find out is the 'skeletons
in the closest' Who was illigitimate, who had an affair, who went to
prison etc etc etc Yet those who decide to publish their lines on line
have no qualms about releasing this information . In fact, there seems
to be a thrill in passing it on.
Here in Australia it is a sign of 'pedigree' if you can prove you are
descended from the original convicts - no matter what their crime was.
In USA in seems that a large number of the people with the surname of
Dalton are determined to add the Dalton gang in their tree.

If we are happy to publish these details regarding our dead ancestors
(and maybe embarrass and upset the living ones by doing so) then what is
the problem with declaring that my cousin is Mary Smith?

An ancestor couple of mine were extremely 'puritannical' in their
approach and their manner of life, the word 'sex' was not even allowed
to be mentioned and if anyone in the area fell pregnant outside of
wedlock then she became the butt of their condemnation. Yet when I
researched the family I found that they got married five years after the
birth of their youngest (of 7). And their was no legal hinderance to
 them doing so.
If my mother (who is now deceased) had ever been confronted with that
information she would have gone into complete denial - it would have
been too hard for her to accept.
Yet such material we are prepared to publish. But not the name of a
 living relative

 I cannot understand why!!
 Phil

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: New Version of Legacy

2007-07-07 Thread Sandra Tyler Duncan
Well here goes my mention of my desired feature
I would like to have a place to check to have death dates show like
birthdates and anniversary dates do presently.
I have many family members on Find A Grave as well as friends and
acquaintances that I would like to be reminded of so that I can go leave
virtual flowers and thoughts at virtual grave sites. I live in a wheelchair
and rarely get to go see the REAL ones near by , so this feature would make
me very happy. Yes, I do remember my parents deaths as well as my son and
husband but there are others that I do not remember and I think this feature
would be fabulous for LEGACY. PLEASE

 Alan,

What features are you looking for?

Maybe if you mentioned them in the list the programmers will hear about
it.

Or someone will mention an obscure program that you have not heard about
that does that.

Is it something I'm doing wrong or have I missed something somewhere?
Worked fine before downloading latest build and is a facility I

Re: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

I was told that my father-in-law was born in Cherokee territory but as the
years passed and I got more proficient with genealogy, I found him in the
census and to have been born in Pratt City, Pratt County, Kansas and until I
found out the truth I had him listed as of Cherokee territory and I did it as
an update so that my original find would still show [[I like seeing where I

I would not change the Of Cherokee entries just because there was no county
called Of Cherokee. The Of means that the person lived there at some
point, but whether she was born and/or died there was not known when the entry
was made. For instance, you might find a person on a census record for a
particular place, but have no source as to where she was born or died. For
people whose actual place of birth or death is known, leave out the Of. But
if you take it out for across the board, it degrades the accuracy of the data.

There have been discussions before on trying to change the preposition in the
location list. There doesn't seem to be a good way to do it.

As to the question mark, it probably means that your mother did not have a
source for that location, but thought it was right. Some people enter Prob
Cherokee, when there is some uncertainty about the location.

I would not let the county verification tool or the location list take over
your effort to have a reasonably accurate record.

I notice there is the preposition that you can change in the Master Location
List. Would I make a location titled Prep: Of and then put the location? I am
concerned if I do this, when look at the person's data, I won't know if it
means In Cherokee or Of Cherokee.

  2) Other entries she put Cherokee?, Iowa There is not a County called

but not sure Is there a better way to data input that so it won't be on the

Re: [LegacyUG] U.S. County Verification

2007-05-24 Thread Sandra Tyler Duncan
This is probably not what you think that you want but here goes anyway. I
once had a pile of pictures to scan into my computer and I actually thought
that I would never get it done but I just started with the first picture and
went at it one by one and in what seemed like 4 short months I was done. I
might add that in October 198 I had a massive stroke that pretty much paralyzed
most of my left side. I never hardly ever give up on things.
Then shortly after I had issues with LEGACY and my computer at least 3
crash times and the locations were in such a mess that I decided to go through
them one by one until all were EXACTLY as I wanted each and every one. I knew
that if I wanted it a certain way, I would have to do it one by one until it
got done it took me six months besides the other non computer stuff that
filled my time, but I now have the perfect location list [[FOR ME]] and I could
not be happier, my motto is whatever it takes.
Hope this helps
Sandra

NOTE: besides curing the OF question for me , I was also able to fix other
errors that any other cure would have missed, you are blessed to have your
mother's genealogy. All of mine is my own creation

[LegacyUG] Tracking non-relatives

2006-12-14 Thread Sandra Tyler Duncan
This is very interesting, because I have many non-relatives in my data, all
marked private. They are entered like: John X-Qpublic married Jane X-Doe.I even
have my dogs this way: Cocoa X-Duncan. The X helps me find the record and since
they are all marked private, they do not appear when I submit my data and to
make sure all do not show on the submitted stuff, I just go check for surnames
beginning with an X. A recent search gave me parents and siblings of an old
acquaintance, no vital to my search for blood relatives but a way to rest from
my INTENSE search and I still get a thrill when I hit pay-dirt, blood related
or not. In my habit of doing this, I have found LEGACY has helped me to keep
data on lives other than that of my real blood relatives, better than any
othere program that I have ever had, ever!!! My other prefix is for the 19
caregivers that we have had since a massive stroke slowed me down a bit in
1998, they are listed thus: CG-Orphan Annie [CG # 6] this aids me in keeping
track of them for future reference [CG stands for Caregiver]
Hope this helps some one.

Actually, IMHO non-relatives fall into the same general category as
heirlooms, pets, family homes, and any other items that link to several family
members but are not human family members themselves. I currently use Events
for these (Grandfather's Clock - Owner being one) and attach them to the
relevant people. Listing as Children for non relatives seems more confusing to
me, but I agree that Events are not quite right either. Perhaps some day there
will be a list of Things and people of importance to the family to which we
can link our Legacy relatives

I accidentally sent a post to this list in HTML just recently too. Now
I've worked out what happened, I'll share the details in case it helps
someone else...

I switched to using Mozilla Thunderbird for my emails a month or so back.
One of the first settings I set up was to make all emails to Rootsweb and
Legacy in plain text. So far, so good - that worked a charm.

BUT, along the way, I got tired of the program asking me frequently if I
wanted to send in plain text or HTML for addresses where I hadn't set
their preference, so I went in and found the particular setting governing
this behaviour - under Tools / Options / Composition / General, then click
on the Send Options button, and in the first setting choose the
behaviour for When sending messages in HTML format and one or more
recipients are not listed as being able to receive HTML I chose send the
message in both plain text and HTML.

Once I'd set that, things changed and I suddenly found that my next post
went to the LUG in HTML. Oops! Sorry! This setting over-rode the one
I'd made in the first instance, that stated legacyusergroup.com was only
to be sent plain text (which happens to be on the same screen as the one I
described above).

What I've done to remedy this is to go into my Address Book and set for
the LUG address that it is only to be sent plain text, and now I'm back to
not having to remember to set plain text for my posts, and I'm not bugged
by messages for recipients who aren't in my Address Book, or I haven't
said which form they're to get. Should have done that in the first place,
but didn't know what was to come. ;-)

If you're using Outlook Express, there is a setting there, in the Address
Book, if I remember correctly, where you can determine that all emails
sent to that particular address will be in plain text. I used to use that
before switching programs.

Hope this helps someone. :-)

Kind Regards,

  Laura,
I could not function without Ancestry.com. It is true, if you are near a
public library that subscribes and they have enough computers you could do
without buying it yourself. However, if you like going from Legacy's Resource
module directly to Ancestry, it obviously needs to be available on your home
  computer.
You might want to try the trial subscription then sign up for the monthly
program(overall much more expensive.) Unless you do alot of British Isles, be
sure you sign up for only the US version.

Does the same job as TaskArrange and was probably the one you were
thinking of, Sandra. Pity about the confusing names for applications

[LegacyUG] problem solved by TASK ARRAIGNER

2006-10-13 Thread Sandra Tyler Duncan

 For many months I
griped about how legacy turned on yuckyevery morning when I did
hibernation wrong. Nothing could be done, viewing, adding or altering in any
way, so I used to shut entire computer down and do a restart. Then I found Task
Arraigner and when it come out of hibernation each day, the first thing that I
do is to shut down LEGACY then start it up again, editing problem is solved but
then on the bottom task bar, LEGACYis not the first in line, somehow, I
found task arraigner, Just tried to find it to share with you but was not able
toGoogle it, sorry, but when I first complained about this months ago,
Another lister said that they had the same trouble, LEGACY OK when closed into
hibernation but when opening no actions can be performed. So, instead of
restarting computer, I just close and reopen LEGACY,which puts it far to
the right of thestart button and TASK ARRAIGNER can move it to be 'just'
to the right of the start button which is my preference. Please mail me
privately if you find theplace to download the
program.

Sherry et al,
Please excuse this off topic posting, but it is peripherally related to
Legacy.

Everyone else, this is off topic, so please if you have any replies,
*PLEASE* send to me privately. I'd hate to clog up an already busy
list with this.

I need to get a new scanner to enable me to scan in photos, Etc. I
intend to use it primarily for Legacy purposes, but also for sharing
photos with other family members, especially a first cousin I've just
found out about, whom I never knew even existed until a year ago!

Have any of you got any ideas or help for me? What I need to look out
for, what I should avoid, Etc. Any tips or hints would be gratefully
appreciated.

Again, responses to me privately, please, and not directly to the list.

Thanks in advance,

Dermot.

I think what you are seeing is the spouse icon. It is a female (long
hair) on the husband's side and male (short hair) on the wife's
sidemake's sense to me as most spouses are the opposite sex. If there
are more than one spouse the icons show as 2 people.

Hi All,

Since updating to Legacy 6 Deluxe, and current update 109, I find that
the male and female icons on the family view are switched. The men have
long hair - the women short hair. Not a big deal, but it does look a
bit strange, especially to people I send my information to. Is there
anyway of changing this? I tried reset to default but it didn't change
anything. Nothing in the help file either.

Recently, my sister sent me ove 200 negatives from our growing up years 1940
to 1950. I scanned them into my computre in .tif mode to securly save them
but when I tried to share the scans with family members in .jpg mode the
ones in color turn to black and white. And just now when I tried to save a
picture already on my computer to LEGACY, it too saved to Legacy in Black
and white. Has anyone else had thids happen to them?

Re: [LegacyUG] Pictures

2006-08-07 Thread Sandra Tyler Duncan
Sorry, sorry, not enough information, most of the negatives are black and
white and I am still teaching myself the best way to scan them in, but ah
ha most all of then have been scanned in by now. But there were some of the
old color ones included and those are the ones I was having trouble with.
However today I wanted to add some pictures previously scanned in to my
LEGACY files and that is the second time I sawolor pictures come out as
black and white
Scanner is a Microtek 5900 that is already set up to scan in negatives
without any extra added device

I spent two days looking up best way to scan and save and I came up with
saving them in .tif which takes a lot of room but I have tons of room , a
250 gig and a 500 gig external anyways I scanned in the color strip and went
to see the .jpg that I also saved it in and the .jpg was BW so now I am
worried about the rest of them, because Ido not want to try to share them
with family and have to convert each one. I did convert the one that I
scanned but at the moment I cannot remember how I did it. That is not what I
am concerned about, my concern is why is this happening in the first place.
Oh! and most of the time I use Irfanview to deal with them. Also very busy so
am not exactly remembering my actions. And one last thing I want to make it
clear that I do not believe that LEGACY has anything to do with the color
going away, BUT COLOR WAS BEING DISCUSSED WASN'T IT ???

Hmmm

Sandra, this seems more like a Windows or some other problem rather than
Legacy but at the moment I am at loss to think what. Perhaps you could
clarify some points though which may (or may not) help. You say that you
received negatives and I take these are converted to positives on
scanning. Are the .tif files in colour when viewed and what viewer are you
using? You say you viewed the .tif files in .jpg format - how did you
convert them and using what software? Again what viewer did you use to
view the .jpg? Finally, to clarify are you saying that on conversion from
.tif to .jpg they were converted from colour to grey scale?
