Re: [LegacyUG] Default location for photos

2009-08-29 Thread Leon Chapman
I agree you store you files and pictures anywhere on your hard drive
or thumb drive. Conceptually you could store each picture in a
different location and as long as you assign or point to the picture
location, Legacy will be happy.

The issue is what happens when you move to another computer - you will
need to replicate and/or point to the location of each picture file.
The other issue is backing up your files - you will have to back up/
copy each file from each location.

If you only have a few pictures, then everything is easy. In my case,
I have several thousands of pictures - I want to keep it simple. Try
moving your files to another location, e.g., c/legacy6/ to d:/legacy7/
and move your pictures to drive D. This is where simplicity pays off -
same for backups.

Bottom line, if you like complexity, go for it. In my experiences,
the KISS principle works much better.

I, too have pictures in two quite distinct places - I have photographs
of people and places and so in sub-folders within C:\Legacy\Pictures and
I have Census images, scans of certificates, information copies from web
pages, etc, which are all attached to Sources stored in numerous folders
and sub-folders within C:\genes.

I see that at the moment I don't have anything in C:\Legacy\Docs which
is slightly odd because I thought I had put some files in there! I have
no doubt I will use that folder in the future.

As for naming of pictures and documents, which is mentioned elsewhere,
this is something I wish I'd given a lot more thought to when I first
started! I am gradually changing filenames to more sensible and
easily-findable ones. Photos of individuals are "Surname, forenames
RIN" with some further identifier as required, such as "Paul, Eileen
Margaret 203 aged 6" or "Bloor, William Henry 166 in Investiture
uniform". Pictures of a wedding couple are "groom surname, groom
forenames RIN = bride surname, bride forenames RIN". Pictures of
headstones, memorials etc are all together in a Graves folder, so each
file is named "Gravestone - surname, forenames RIN" or "Memorial -
surname, forenames RIN."

This is still very much a work in progress! One thing I have found
useful is having a set of "index pages" for all my group photos. On an
A4 sheet I print a copy of the picture and underneath the names of all
the people depicted, along with their UserID (which is an identifier
plus RIN, eg B7.149) working from left to right and in rows from top to
bottom. I title each page with a simple identifier such as "Horatio,
Gertrude and their Children" or "Henry & Margaret Silver Wedding 1900"
and in the header I print the full path and filename of the electronic
version of that photograph.

2009-08-28 Thread Tom Thorpe
Hi Joyce,

I have another system that began much like I understand yours tp be.  I scan or
otherwise digitally capture everything that crosses my path, that's related to
my family history.  I have just over 7,276 images across 51families.  The
catalog is an Excel spreadsheet and the images are grouped into folders, one
for each marriage.  My largest folder contains 2250 images and my smallest has
just 1 image.

Hundreds of these images are linked to various persons in Legacy.  Some are
headshots, some are marriage photos and some are images of the evidence upon
which I base the fact entered, e.g., death certificate for death date.  That
way I have not only the fact, but also the evidence.

I backup regularly onto a Corsair 32MB flash drive, on which I also back up my
Legacy.  Transferring to another computer is then just a matter of copying the
files from the flash drive on to the new computer.

Tom

In your system how do you file photos with more than 1 person? Say a

Hi All,

I started what I thought was a good system for filing photos
that are put into Legacy. I listed them in surname order and
then by first name. For example:

C:\joyce_surnames\atchley\thomas.

This was good when I only had a few photos, but now I have
over 400 photos with a LONG list of surnames, a file and
subfiles under each one.

I want to be able to move my Legacy files and multi-media
between my desktop and laptop and so that the photos will
show up in each. Is that possible with so many different
locations?

Would appreciate your assistance.

Joyce

RE: [LegacyUG] Default location for photos

2009-08-28 Thread ronald ferguson

Leon,

As I read Joyce's original request she was asking whether she could keep her
orginal structure, and with 400 photos I don't blame her, to which the answer
is "yes" because all her photo files are in the 'C' directory.

The paths to the photos are in the .fdb file which as you correctly say, is in
C:\Legacy\Data by default. Hence if Joyce copies her Data file to that location
and opens the backup in C:\ then they will be found without problem. Or the
photo files can be transferred across using USB, Disc etc (Actually I have a
home network so I just copy them).

Whether or not Joyce wishes to copy all her settings across is her choice, I
would as I believe in an easy life!

You are correct in that Legacy recommends that pictures be kept in
C:\Legacy\Pictures and if Joyce was starting from scratch I too would recommend
that course, but she isn't, and like I say, I prefer the easy life!

Given the way Joyce described her photo file structure, I assume with her
400 or so pictures that she would have maybe 10 pictures per family and thus
a total of about 40 directories that she must replicate on the new machine.
The same is true for backups - 40 subdirectories. My 2nd approach, which
Legacy uses, means you can backup and move from one machine to another by
just coping one directory: c:\Legacy\.

Bottom line, if you like to copy lots of individual directories, go for it.
I prefer the Simple approach.

copied from machine A to B. Normally, this file should also reside at the
same location on both machines - Legacy by default likes to use:
c:\Legacy\Data\ as the default location for the database.

Since Joyce has chosen to create a new structure/location for her photos,
she may very well have her family database in a unique location also
Wherever it is located, she will probably want to copy that file to the same
location on both machines.

The 2nd option that I proposed was to simplify the picture file structure by
coping all the photo files into a single sub-directory. Legacy by default
uses: C:\Legacy\Pictures\ as the picture sub-directory.

The standard Legacy default locations has advantages when it comes to
backing up your files and databases - it is much simpler, just copy the
entire Legacy subfolder and you get all your necessary files. Some people
have their database and pictures located under c:\My Documents\so they
can backup the folder c:\My Documents\ and get all of the major files.

Bottom line, you can place your database, photos, etc wherever you want.
The easiest way is to replicate everything from Machine A to Machine B, but
then you have the backup problems mentioned above.

For clarity, I should have said in my second paragraph that the multimedia
backup should be used and the settings from the first installation should also
be carried across.

Leon,

I am not sure what you are suggesting here. Joyce has all her pictures in
folders in the C Drive, or in their sub folders. This is fine and will work
without problem on any machine or o/s.

If I was Joyce I would just copy the lot, as they stand, across to the C Drive
of the second machine and Legacy will know where they are.

If Joyce does as you suggest then she will have to tell Legacy where they are.

Re: [LegacyUG] Default location for photos

2009-08-27 Thread Tom Element

Hello Joyce

What Leon has said makes good sense and may make life easier in the
future. Don't forget, after coping files from one pc to another, you
can make some 'adjustments' if need be by going to Options -> Customise
-> Locations. You'll see the default locations noted there, 4 pathways
in V7. These paths can be changed by clicking 'Change' and following
the Windows Explorer type window. Then click 'Reset'. But as Leon
suggested, probably good to stick with the defaults.
Just to give you an idea: You can click "View Current List of Multimedia
Locations" to see what pathways Legacy has created in you application.
Read the opportunities to make changes carefully, especially combining
duplicate paths, and the items under 'Options'. Create a Path:
C:\joyce_surnames\atchley\thomas in the Master Picture/Sound/Video File
Path List Window, and a path C:\Legacy\Pictures then combine them to be
left with just C:\Legacy\Pictures. There are lots of things one can do.

Hi All,

C:\joyce_surnames\atchley\thomas.

This was good when I only had a few photos, but now I have over 400

I want to be able to move my Legacy files and multi-media between my
desktop and laptop and so that the photos will show up in each. Is
that possible with so many different locations?

Would appreciate your assistance.

Re: [LegacyUG] Default location for photos

2009-08-27 Thread Leon Chapman
Sure it is possible.
You just have to recreate all of your photo folders, subfolders, etc exactly
like you have on your 1st machine and copy all of the photos to exactly the
same place on the new machine.

I would not recommend doing that. Legacy really wants all of its pictures
in one subfolder - they use: c:\Legacy\Pictures\ as the default location.
You can change that location to somewhere else on your computer, but it will
still only be one folder/location which in your case will not work.

I would suggest you continue to use your filing system for your master
pictures, but to copy all of the pictures into one subfolder and point to
the single subfolder within Legacy.

This probably won't be the last time you have to transfer between computers,
so you may want to bite the bullet and place all the pictures in one
folder. It is so much easier to backup and transfer that way.
