I have recently become a convert to Legacy but am having trouble with
searching for a string of text globally (ie in several or all fields)

The reason I want to do this is that I often use abbreviations when I enter
data (such as Mcr for Manchester) and would then like to globally replace
all occurrences of the abbreviation with the full name WHEREVER IT OCCURS
(Notes, Places etc etc).

I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to do this.

Many thanks

As Ron has already stated, it can't be done directly in Legacy. However,
there is one possible way to do such a search. Export the file to a GEDCOM
and search the .ged file with a text editor such as Notepad

Re: [LegacyUG] Searching globally

2008-09-22 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
There are eight note fields. The seven 'Notes-X', and 'Event-Notes'. Example:
Using the Search tool Individual - 'Notes-Birth Place' - 'Not equal to' - ' '
(leave blank), will show you, on eight searches, all your notes with something
in them. Looking through them each, if needed.
Then go to the Master Location list. If in every case Mcr means exactly one
Manchester, then you can COMBINE together. (Should be done already). If more
than one possible, then take each location in the list, 'show people', tag them
each, then determine which is accurate, use the COMBINE tool.
This is more inclusive, and possibly easier, if not faster, than finding the
pin in the haystack of a Gedcom-word document, since it needs to be printed to
paper, (I can't be SURE I found all on a screen before scrolling to the next
page).
This is part of the learning curve in producing genealogical data. Most of us
will admit to doing the same thing at one point. I was warned at the time, but
I said, 'I don't need to worry, I will always remember what my abbr. mean'. I
have two that I did 12 years ago, that I haven't a clue what I meant.
I couldn't tell where you have abbreviations at? but this should cover all.

I was looking at the Search function that results from the Toolbar button. I
use this very often and am pretty well-versed with it. That is what I assumed

RE: [LegacyUG] Searching globally

2008-09-22 Thread ronald ferguson

Joyce,

To clarify, I was referring to the Search tab (on the top row on the task bar)
not the Icon - if that is what you mean by button. In any event you still
have a problem.

I have seen a reference to this problem before but cannot remember the details,
nor can I find them, and would suggest the following courses of action:

1. Try FileFile MaintenanceCheck/Repair (not optimistic but you never know)
2. Close Legacy, leave for a few minutes and restart
3. Shut the computer down and leave for 10 minutes then restart (always
surprising how often (2) or (3) work
4. Go to your Legacy folder and delete Search.usr (Legacy will recreate it)
5. If I'd reached this point for myself with no luck, I would now lose my
presence of mind and re-install!

 Subject: [LegacyUG] Searching globally

I have recently become a convert to Legacy but am having trouble with
searching for a string of text globally (ie in several or all fields)

The reason I want to do this is that I often use abbreviations when I enter
data (such as Mcr for Manchester) and would then like to globally
replace all occurrences of the abbreviation with the full name WHEREVER IT
 OCCURS (Notes, Places etc etc).

I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how to do this.

 Many thanks
 Edward

 Joyce,

To clarify, I was referring to the Search tab (on the top row on the task
bar) not the Icon - if that is what you mean by button. In any event you
 still have a problem.

I have seen a reference to this problem before but cannot remember the
details, nor can I find them, and would suggest the following courses of
 action:

 1. Try FileFile MaintenanceCheck/Repair (not optimistic but you never
 know)

When I clicked the Search button on the toolbar and tried to search it
 comes back:

The designated program file could not be found or was not an executable
file. Please use the Change button to search for the program again. invalid
 procedure call or argument

What Change button/ What program file?

Are some of my program files missing?

Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction!

 Joyce

  Ron,

Where is this search/replace function? I don't see it.

  Edward,

I don't think that this can be done globally from within Legacy. It can
 be
changed in all the Location fields using SearchSearch and
ReplaceLists-Location (there is also another for Lists-Location-Short)
 but
I'm afraid that you will have to repeat for each type of not etc.

Actually, I had been up since 4:00 AM, almost 3 hours before I read your email.
I hadn't had my caffeine yet either! Sorry!

Gee, thanks, Mike! When I first read your response, I took your tone
to be that of someone who was tired of seeing questions from ignorant
members of the Legacy user community. You told me to wake up as if
I was blind or stupid. Am I wrong? You've never responded like that
 before, have you?

No. Nothing like that. Guess it was the first message of the day and I
hadn't had the necessary infusion of caffeine at the time. Thought you,
like me, hadn't been up long. I shouldn't try to be funny until I'm at
one with the day! I'm really not a morning person. Much better in the
evening and at night.
