RE: [LegacyUG] Unable to Uninstall; Missing Install.log file and Error 339

2009-03-22 Thread Connie Sheets

My problem is (finally) fixed. Sharing "just in case" it will help someone
else now or in the future.

With Ron's help offlist, I was ultimately able to uninstall and reinstall
Legacy. I still had the print/preview problem, but this time when I did a
Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut down Legacy, I got an Error 339 message involving
vsprint8.ocx (I'd already figured out vspdf8.ocx probably had something to do
with my problem, because with each reinstall of Legacy it paused for a very
long time "skipping" this file).

Googling Error 339 lead me directly to Legacy's website, where I downloaded the
two Active X control files involved: although both those files were already
present in my Windows/System 32 file, by re-downloading, I can now print and
preview my reports.

Thanks to all who gave suggestions and moral support. I now know more than I
ever wanted to know about how Legacy and Windows XP work. And I got practice
doing another kind of detective work, similar to what we do when we search for
our ancestors.

Sherry,

Nope, Legacy cannot be uninstalled.  And yes, I'm 100% positive I followed your
instructions exactly.

I am awaiting Ron's instructions offlist re: registry edit (I'm a brave woman).

FYI, here is what I've done, more or less in sequence, since discovering
yesterday that Legacy consistently hangs when trying to print or preview
reports.  I rebooted after each step.

Ran Check/Repair

Reset Options Customize to default

Deleted .usr files related to reports

Opened/converted an old fdb file (created pre-version 7) to make sure it wasn't
a problem with my main file

Tried to uninstall (couldn't)

Rebooted with Last Known Good Config

Ran system restore to pre-7.0.0.90 download

Ran system restore to pre-7.0.0.89 download

Reset report settings to default

Ran complete McAfee scan on all files/folders

Tried to uninstall again (this time I got the "could not open install.log"
error message, retrieved the last install.log file from Mozy, ran uninstall
again; it appeared to work but didn't - all it did was delete the install.log
file).

Deleted all .usr files, not just those related to reports.

Reinstalled Legacy "over the top."

Followed your instructions to the letter.

Bottom line:  I cannot uninstall Legacy, and I cannot print or preview any
report, including the Family File Info Report.  (I am able to print/preview
from Excel, Word, pdf files, webpages, etc. without problem).

For what it may be worth, my Event Log shows multiple Legacy Application Hangs
Category (101) Event 1002.

Other ideas short of editing the registry or formatting my hard drive and
starting from scratch?  (Running XP Home with SP3 on a 3 year old HP Laptop).

With Legacy closed, go to the Legacy folder on your hard

drive. Delete the
Install.Log file. Then go to the c:\Legacy\Backup
folder and delete any
files with the word "install" in the file name.

Reinstall Legacy and you should have no problems

Thanks for using Legacy.

Connie,

Retrieve the last install.log file from Mozy, make a copy called
install.log.bak (this saves having to retrieve it again from Mozy).
After replacing the install.log go to start > Legacy (or whereever you
put it) and use the Legacy uninstall. I have had problems with windows
add/remove programs in the past and always use the uninstall feature
that comes with a program.

Let us know if that works.

Connie, I'm still on the list, just lurking in the shadows so to speak.  You
are having exactly the same problems that I had I believe caused by error #5 in
my case.  Any suggestions from all failed to resolve the issue with one
exception.  Ron Ferguson suggested that I go into my Registry and he'd help me
off list, which I appreciated very much.  However, never having done that I
elected to take it to a friend (read wizard) and he removed Legacy from the
registry.  I then downloaded Legacy from the Legacy Home Page, entered my
Legacy deluxe number, then I "restored" a file and all was well.  I'm sure that
you directly or inadvertantly did not delete install.log.  Nor did I.  Having
said all of that Connie, I recommend that you run, don't walk or pass go, just
find someone who's proficient in working in the registry and all will be
resolved.  I deleted the E-mail from Ron identifying the file to be removed so
Ron maybe you could repeat that
information for Connie. Wishing you good luck.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Unable to Uninstall; Missing Install.log file

If the person who was having problems a week or two ago with the missing
install.log file is still reading the list, he may be interested to know I
think I have duplicated his problem.

As part of my quest to rectify my unable to preview or print problem, I tried
to uninstall Legacy.  I used Add/Remove programs.

At first I thought it had just neglected to remove the shortcut from the
desktop, but then I realized the whole program was still there and
functional...so, for awhile I thought I had lost my mind or, at least, forgot
to actually press the remove program button.

Later, when I tried to uninstall again (both from Add/Remove and from the
Uninstall Legacy 7.0 button in the Legacy directory), I got the message "could
not open install.log" file.  So I searched for it, including in hidden files,
and it was not there.

I did retrieve it, but only because I had a backup made to Mozy several days
ago.

I put it back in the Legacy folder, ran Add/Remove programs again, and the only
thing Uninstall removed (apparently) was the install.log file.

I then downloaded and reinstalled over the top, but I still do not have the
ability to print or preview a report.

I will this to Support (tomorrow, as I'm burned out today).

Connie
