Re: [LegacyUG] Controlling picture size in Charts

2010-01-06 Thread Chick Lewis
I guess my "bandaid" is going back to FTM for their charts. I sure
like the power of Legacy and will continue to use it, but it is hard
to beat FTM for charts. I bought and tried Super Tools V2, but I don't
like it. Too difficult to use. Fortunately FTM can read Legacy
direct so it shouldn't be too hard to transfer back and forth.

Amen Angelique! I am new to this board. I have used Legacy for about two
years. If I were to have questions, I would hesitate to ask them due to
the tone of some of the group members.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Suggestions

Hello Everyone,

I recently joined because I love Legacy and have used it for a few years
now, but still have a lot to learn. However, my purpose for posting
today is to share some things about the group that make me feel
uncomfortable as a newbie, and then offer some suggestions to help our
group function more smoothly.

My first concern is regarding the tone of some of the responses, whether
they are from group members or Legacy support, there have been posts
that come off rude from the perspective of someone just joining. My
suggestion is for everyone to /please/ try to speak to each other as if
we are in the same room. In other words, be nice and respect each other,
pretty please with hot chocolate, marshmallows and whipped cream on top.

Second concern is regarding the hundreds of posts I have read regarding
errors when people try to verify their subscriptions. This seems to be
due to an error in a hyperlink if I understand correctly? The link
provided has a space between two characters right? It really does seem
to me that it is the responsibility of Legacy support to fix the error
in the hyperlink. Wouldn't that save thousands of responses instructing
the individual to remove the space themselves?

This leads to my third concern, while there are posts about people
having issues verifying their subscription, at the same time you have
individuals just joining who wish to change their group status to digest
mode because of inbox fill-up. My suggestion is similar to what others
have already offered, such as adding some type of attributes to the font
(bold, underline, etc.) on the website indicating there is no digest or
moving the text somewhere it is more likely to be seen. I opt for moving
it to somewhere it is more likely to be seen before someone clicks to join.

I feel that since the group was most likely created without the digest
format and does indicate there is no digest, it is not the
responsibility of Legacy support to incorporate this format. But I do
feel it is their responsibility (unless they want to keep responding to
questions about digests) to make it more clear that there isn't one
before people even join.

On the page, it looks like the best place in the source code to put it
where people can see it is here:

Sign up for [...] list with news about Legacy events and
meetings in Utah. <-After this paragraph and before the
centered form

Please Note: No digest version of this list is
available. <--- It would help if this were centered, in a larger font,
bold, or whatever else may help

Thanks :)

Re: [LegacyUG] Basic Format?

2010-01-06 Thread Connie Sheets
Deborah,

ISBN numbers and the total number of pages in a book are not part of standard
citation practices. The specific page number(s) of your citation are on the
details screen. (I'm not sure which you are referring to).

If you are using a revised edition, you will want to use the revised edition
template (Step 1), and then you will see a field for the edition number.
Publication date is part of all the book templates as far as I know (there are
so many permutations possible I admittedly didn't check them). Be sure to
scroll all the way down as on some of the templates the fields do not all fit
on one screen. I think there is an option you can check to remind you of this,
but I turned mine off.

Re: [LegacyUG] Basic Format?

2010-01-06 Thread Connie Sheets
Deborah,

In Sourcewriter, the "basic format" is one of the choices under "Medium," i.e.
is it an online image, a CD, a microfilm, etc. Yes, I use it for real books
(hard copies). I also use it in other situations where I don't think the other
choices quite fit. (It has nothing to do with the Basic Source system, as far
as I can tell).

In the case of books, at least, I have found the "basic format" almost always
includes the necessary information, or that I could easily modify it to do so
(e.g. by leaving some fields blank or placing certain data in other fields).
Can you give an example of what you believe is missing?

Re: [LegacyUG] Basic Format?

2010-01-06 Thread Deborah Trounstine
Hi Richard,
I appreciate your assistance with this but maybe I wasn't clear enough.
What I am referring to are the choices that you have WITHIN
SourceWriter. If I go to SW to create a new source - in this case a book
- first I choose "Books" from the Type of Source list, then I use the
drop down list to choose whether the book is authored or edited, then I
select the Type of Author, and then a drop-down box appears that asks me
to Select the Medium. One of the choices of medium is "basic format". My
question is, does "basic format" in this context refer to a hard copy of
the book?

Basic Format is the old sourcing tool, which many of us still use. When
creating your next source, do some exploring to compare both. Go to Master
Source List, on the right side are a couple check boxes. Choose either Source
Writer or Basic System for comparison purposes. When choosing Basic, first you
must pick BS, then go to add, the computer asks do you really want to do this.
Say yes to see what is there. You can delete it all afterwards. The short names
for these 2 are SW and Basic.

I don't know. This was my 'bandaid' so I could get to research instead of
learning how to improve what I decided was acceptable (to me).

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Group Report with Editable Text and Pictures

2010-01-06 Thread Wendy Howard
Could people who are interested in this please reply directly to the
person concerned, and not to the list?

Before you send your email asking for a copy of the document too, please
check the header and if necessary copy the original poster's details
into the To: field instead of the list address (it was Mary Fowler Leek
 who made the offer.)

If you don't know how to copy text from one place to another using your
keyboard and/or mouse, I've written some instructions which you'll find
at
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/How-to.htm#CopyPaste
It's a very handy thing to know; I use it for any text I use repeatedly
(such as my signature below) and any URL I share in an email. It helps
to prevent typing errors, and with a bit of practise it is very quick.

Thanks in advance for your consideration towards your fellow list
subscribers. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

[LegacyUG] Suggestions

2010-01-06 Thread Marvin & Angelique Welch

Please Note: No digest version of this list is available.
<--- It would help if this were centered, in a larger font, bold, or whatever
else may help

Thanks :)

[LegacyUG] Language mix-up in reports

2010-01-06 Thread Thomas Marti

I recently started using Legacy, and begin to realize that it's a really
great piece of software.

My question: I am using the German version of Legacy, and noticed that
in some reports I get a mix of English and German titles/subtitles/text,
i.e. some titles and texts are in English, others are in German. For
example, in a book report (Descendants), the title is in English
("Descendants of ..."), as are the text pieces "Noted events in
[his/her] life were:" and "children from this marriage were:", whereas
the rest of the text is in German as it should be.

Ok, there are the tabs where you can change the titles and other pieces
of text. So I changed all the titles and texts to German, and now get
everything in German EXCEPT the title of the first page. I can enter
anything into the field for the title of the first page, Legacy just
seems to ignore it, and always displays "Descendants of ...".

Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thomas

This mailing list is not a democracy, it is a FREE service provided by
the people who provide Legacy.  No-one is forcing you to use this forum;
if you don't like it, you are welcome to go elsewhere. :-)

You may like to consider these -
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Software/LEGACY.html ,
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Software/AUS-LEGACY.html
, http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.legacy/mb.ashx or
http://www.genealogywise.com/group/legacyfamilytreefans

Without going back through the recent mail, I can't recall anyone
providing clear directions for managing the Inbox, so that those who
don't know any different and think that digests are the best thing for
mailing lists can learn new ways to be happy with what they've got.

All email programs (as far as I'm aware) have rules or filters - the
name varies depending on the program, but you'll find information in
your email program's Help files about them. You can make a filter to
identify the incoming list mail and divert it to its own folder. This
keeps it separate from your personal mail, away from everything else so
that you can concentrate on it when you wish, and ignore it when you
need or want to do that.

Web-based email services *usually* have a similar facility, or some
other way to manage the mail to identify and separate out the mailing
list mail.

I have some instructions on my personal web site that I wrote a long
time ago for another mailing list that I help to administer. They can
be adapted to any mailing list, by changing the email address. They're
at
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/How-to.htm#RuleFilter
(this is a new location since I last posted on this topic, BTW).

It has been *years* since I wrote that page, and things may have changed
a little since then. But there should be enough there for someone to
work out how to set a filter in their own mail box. Don't forget to
check the Help files of whatever program or service you're using if you
need more assistance.

What is missing from those instructions is Gmail on the web. Gmail has
filters, but it doesn't have folders. Instead, it uses labels. You
could set a filter to give the list mail its own label, and perhaps to
archive the mail straight away so it is removed from your Inbox. Then
you'd have to go to that label to find the list mail, and perhaps use a
star to mark the last thread you read, but I can see there might be
problems with that if there was another post to the same thread later
on. I haven't worked that one out, as I don't normally read my Gmail on
the web, but others may be able to chime in with what they do with their
Gmail mail box.

Filters are very effective tools and can do a lot more than move around
incoming mail. Every mailing list I subscribe to has a filter set to
divert that mail away from my Inbox. Other filters colour particular
(non-mailing list) emails so I can see at a glance that it was sent to
another address that I monitor, or forward copies to others
automatically, and so on.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

If all census sources are named with the same pattern, '' Census
place.jpg' they are near each other in the Master list, but if done 'Census
place', all the census will be together in year order, instead of
intrmixed with directories and tax lists; but I actually have done my
master list 'place Census'. I had this set up before SourceWriter existed.
Now to the answer. When you look at the Master Source List, it should be
sorted by date order (per your plan). If you tag the sources you want, then
unchoose and choose the Tag button, only those tagged will show up. OR,
  if you go to search and use Individual; Event-Name; Not Equal To; space bar;
will give ALL people that have any event(s).
Another choice could be Individual; Event-Name; Contains; Census will find
ALL correctly labeled Census records and maybe some wrong ones that have census
anyway.
I actually stepped over the last word in this sentence. "I used this file for
residence, occupation, birth place etc. event."
I hope this gives you ideas on how to use this tool.

Sorry, Rich, I thought I was using Legacy 'verbiage'.
As an example, I assign the event, "Residence" to an individual and fill in
info, assign the "Source" to this event as 1900 Fed Census. I attach the image
file "1900 Census ST Banner.jpg" with it's transcription as the "Detail". I
copy this Event/Source and use it for any other individuals that may be listed
in his family.

What I am asking, is it possible to get a report/search list of people
attached to all census image files used in this manner? So, I'd like a list of
all people attached to "1900 Census ST Banner.jpg".
  Thank you,

First, define what a file is. Are you meaning a Legacy database file, or a
source file, or an event file? Your file as named sounds like a combination of
a source and and event, but is
probably a document turned into a photocopy. If it is a sourrce then it is
real easy. Find the Master Source List. When on the source list, highlight the
correct source. On the right side there are choices. Pick the one called show
list. All people using it will be listed. If it an Event, go to the icon
called search (picture of magnifying glass). Choose Individual, Event-Name,
Equal to, then in what to look for put "1900 Census ST Banner.jpg".
If I am not understanding you, could you ask the question using Legacy
'verbiage'.

Hello all,
I'd like to know if it is possible to create a search list or report that
would list persons that are associated with individual files. For example, I
have a file called 1900 Census ST Banner.jpg. I would like a listing of those
individuals attached to this file. I used this file for residence, occupation,
birth place etc. event. I kind of wandered around the Picture Center but didn't
really see such an option. I don't use it normally.

Thanks, Nancy

2010-01-06 Thread Nancy
Thanks, Brian, that did exactly what I needed. It ended up being almost 600
pages and I printed it out to a pdf file but all my images are identified
along with the individuals and their RIN's.
Thanks again.

Nancy,

There is no way to get a list of who/what is assigned to a specific
photo but you can print a list of the photos/multimedia files and where
they are linked.

Go to View > Scrapbook
On the scrapbook screen, since you say the photo you are interested in
is linked to source details clear all the options except for source
citation details
Click on Print Multimedia List
On the next screen select Include description of what photo is linked to.
Preview
You can scan the report to find the photo you want and it will show who
uses the photo and what it is linked to for them.

As usual, it's entirely a matter of personal preference, really, but
provided you are receiving a *scan* of the original and not a
transcript, I think I would favour using the Newspapers - print edition
template, but I would specify in the Source Comments field that my
actual source was a scan of the original and I would attach the scan
itself.

Where someone sends me an e-mail in which they have transcribed a
document, I always cite the e-mail as the Source and include a copy of
the relevant text in the Source Text field.

By the way, I nearly missed your post because it was buried in some
seemingly interminable bore about Digests. Please start a new thread
when you wish to introduce a new topic, don't just re-name an existing
thread - it doesn't work properly!

[LegacyUG] Sourcing an e-mail with attached obituary scans

2010-01-06 Thread Rob Miller

When sourcing an e-mail that comes with scans of obituaries (with newspaper
name, page #, column #), am I sourcing the the e-mail or the obituaries
themselves?

I'm guessing it is the e-mail, but not sure how to include the obituary info in
the source.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Rob

Re: [LegacyUG] Search or report criteria help

2010-01-06 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
If all census sources are named with the same pattern, '' Census place.jpg'
they are near each other in the Master list, but if done 'Census place',
all the census will be together in year order, instead of intrmixed with
directories and tax lists; but I actually have done my master list
'place  Census'.  I had this set up before SourceWriter existed.
Now to the answer. When you look at the Master Source List, it should be sorted
by date order (per your plan). If you tag the sources you want, then unchoose
and choose the Tag button, only those tagged will show up. OR,
if you go to search and use Individual; Event-Name; Not Equal To; space bar;
will give ALL people that have any event(s).
Another choice could be Individual; Event-Name; Contains; Census will find ALL
correctly labeled Census records and maybe some wrong ones that have census

What I am asking, is it possible to get a report/search list of people attached
to all census image files used in this manner? So, I'd like a list of all
people attached to "1900 Census ST Banner.jpg".
Thank you,
Nancy

Re: [LegacyUG] Search or report criteria help

2010-01-06 Thread Brian/Support

RE: [LegacyUG] Digest mode possible?

2010-01-06 Thread Charles Apple
Well said, Mike. IMHO, if Millennia tried to implement the variety of needs,
and requests of thousands of users, the program would eventually become so
convoluted and cumbersome that nobody would be able to use it.

We were all "Newbies" at one point, as we learned and made mistakes someone
on the list would set us straight. If not from the list, Sherry or one of
the other list monitors would step in. So rather than complaining we should
all thank Sherry, and the other list monitors for their religious efforts in
keeping us straight, and drop the dead end subject of Digest Mode.

But why? There are no good reasons (other than laziness and ineptitude) for
a Digest to exist.

It's not going to save on bandwidth - you still get the same volume of data.

My suggestion to those who want/need digest mode for some reason is to use
gmail. Do not pop your mail to anything else read it on the web. If you have
your settings configured right your messages will be threaded. Cuts down on
your inbox showing a multitude of new messages.

Personally I do not like digest form and would not want to wait for an
answer until the next digest appeared. When the list gets really busy a
digest form would be very long and cumbersome. Plus keeping related messages
together would be a major headache.

Re: [LegacyUG] Search or report criteria help

2010-01-06 Thread Nancy
Sorry, Rich, I thought I was using Legacy 'verbiage'.
As an example, I assign the event, "Residence" to an individual and fill in
info, assign the "Source" to this event as 1900 Fed Census. I attach the image
file "1900 Census ST Banner.jpg" with it's transcription as the "Detail". I
copy this Event/Source and use it for any other individuals that may be listed
in his family.

What I am asking, is it possible to get a report/search list of people attached
to all census image files used in this manner? So, I'd like a list of all
people attached to "1900 Census ST Banner.jpg".
Thank you,
Nancy

But why? There are no good reasons (other than laziness and ineptitude) for a
Digest to exist.

It's not going to save on bandwidth - you still get the same volume of data.
It's a single message - so, learn to manage your Inbox.

Even though Legacy gets dozens (maybe more than dozens) of requests for a
Digest Mode, it falls to a deaf ear. No matter how many people request it,
most of the email responses seem to want to convince us that this mode is the
only good mode, no matter what. I, too, would like a digest mode.

Re: [LegacyUG] Digest mode possible?

2010-01-06 Thread Ruth Nerud
I am going to Create Rule from Message in Outlook Express and when the word
digest appears in an e-mail, the e-mail will be deleted. That way I won't be
tempted to answer along with 20 other people that there is no digest mode.
Can't a Create Rule be created at LUG Central so when an e-mail has the word
digest in it, it goes to one person only and not to the whole LUG and that
person can answer there is no digest mode?
