Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.5 and source citation import?

2012-02-15 Thread Mary Moyer
Chick

I started converting my SW sources back to Basic about 6 months ago, mainly
because I saw how mangled they are in transferring via GEDCOM to other
programs. I've found it best to do it one source at a time. It's possible with
Basic sources to figure out a way to match EE sources, but it takes a bit of
forethought to do it. Since I have almost 2,000 sources (and, no, I'm not an
extreme splitter) almost 50,000 citations, it's taking a lot of time, but I'm
catching things I'd entered wrong when I first started, so it's worth it.

I have been following both these threads and have come to the
conclusion that SourceWriter is not all it's cracked up to be. I
stopped using SW several months ago and have been contemplating
returning to Basic Sources. After following this discussion, I have
decided to do that. I know most Legacy users are converting their
Basic sources to SW. I am going to convert mine back to Basic. Any
comments on how best to do that?

Re: [LegacyUG] How to add illegitimate child

2012-02-15 Thread Jean Suplick
A child always has a mother and a father. That's the way the world works.
Full stop, as they say.

The father may not be a husband of the mother, lawfully wed and all. Would
you agree?

In the Legacy database, every child is entitled to two parents, which
reflects nature. So far so good. What then, does the Legacy database do to
handle children with two parents that are *not married*? That's the
question, right?

Here's what I do.

The mother (aka "wife" in Legacy terms) and a father (aka "husband" in
Legacy terms) can have a child. If they are not married, the in the
"marriage" screen, open the Status dropdown list and select "unmarried".

That's what I do. Set the status to unmarried.

To your implied question, give the child the surname that he/she was known
by.

In my case, my grandmother gave her 7 illegitimage children the surname of
her first husband who abandonded her before any of them were born. (She had
2 legitimate children by him before the abandonment.) These are my aunts
and uncles, and I knew most of them. In the 1930's and 1940's they were
given Grandma's surname, i.e. her husband's name, even though he
was provably not their father. It does't matter. That was their name, so
that's the name I put in Legacy. And in Legacy, their father is Grandma's
"husband", but with an unmarried status.

Hope this helps,
Jean Suplick

I'm with you Tim. Actually I would like to go back one release. 7.5.0.112

have nothing to do with that source. Problem is finding all of these
incorrect assignments. I have backups before converting to 7.5.0.112, but
don't know how to get back to previous version.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.5 and source citation import? / controlling subsequent citations

2012-02-15 Thread Michele Lewis
It was little things on several different types of sources. I can’t remember
exactly. I would look it up in the book and then look at how it was in Legacy
and it wouldn’t match exactly. It wasn’t something glaring but small things.
However, I wanted my sources to be 100% consistent and inline with the Evidence
Explained book so I hand typed them. I do know that the subsequent citations
didn’t match exactly either. And then there was a problem with non population
scheduled because they don’t have templates for those anyways. I remember
there was a problem with state censuses too.

It is your Legacy database that is telling you there is a
half-relationship. Concentrate on that - if indeed there is no genuine
half-relationship in reality, your cousin is going to be very confused
about what you're asking. Then again, they may know exactly what you're
talking about and point you to the person concerned (and you didn't
notice when you were inputting the information, or forgot).

Try bringing up the Marriage List (View > Marriage List) and check
through each ancestor that you have in common with the line that is
"half" according to your database. Do any of them have more than one
spouse?

Hope this helps. :-)

Wendy

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.5 and source citation import?

2012-02-15 Thread Chick Lewis
I have been following both these threads and have come to the
conclusion that SourceWriter is not all it's cracked up to be. I
stopped using SW several months ago and have been contemplating
returning to Basic Sources. After following this discussion, I have
decided to do that. I know most Legacy users are converting their
Basic sources to SW. I am going to convert mine back to Basic. Any
comments on how best to do that?

Re: [LegacyUG] What name to use?

2012-02-15 Thread Jerry
Here's my thinking on it, Paula, trying to explain as briefly as
possible. Quite often when you go to a genealogy website, the first
thing you do is pull up the master person list to check for your
possible ancestors. On many websites (if not most), you will see the
very top of the list will begin with those that ONLY have first names
like a bunch of Andrews, Sarahs, Williams, the word UNKNOWN that lots of
people use, etc.

The FIRST NAME ONLYs are generally at the very top of the index and they
basically tell you nothing meaningful unless there are also columns for
the spouse or parents. So, I wanted to provide a possible eye-catching
list that always has a FIRST NAME and a SURNAME. Neither of them are
ever blank because I use as much information as I have to describe the
missing pieces of the puzzle. Whether it will eventually work to get
people to respond with the right information, we are not sure yet, but
at least it looks more organized and is easier to go through our list.
I have at least enough information to know that a complete father or
mother, sister or brother's name is missing or, of course, I would leave
it completely blank.

With that type of system, I can easily filter a list of all my unknown
names because a ? always appears in the FIRSTNAME field. You can get a
better idea of what I mean by going to our website (username = FullGuest
and password = merriam), and sorting on contains ? for the FIRSTNAME
field. It depends on what is missing as to where the ? appears, but if
the Given Name is missing we use Given Name ? and if the entire name is
missing we use Name ?, etc. I know the purists on here think that is
horrible, but I'm trying to use the computer database in the most
organized way I can with the information I have. I hope that makes a
little bit of sense anyway.

Sincerely,
Jerry Boor - MerriamFamilyTree.org

Re: [LegacyUG] Controlling Subsequent Citation Details [WAS: Legacy 7.5 and source citation import?]

2012-02-15 Thread Paula Ryburn
Aha... I use the census source writer templates. Explains a bit of our
disconnect. But maybe part of the reason your endnotes consume so many pages is
your desire to have a citation print for every field sourced on an individual?
Well, again it does boil down to personal preference, and I think you will like
Legacy's flexibility.

Ward, I just responded to Paula on Subsequent Citation Details and yes, I
should have changed to a new tread.

I have been using the Basic Source templates and not the SourceWriter.
This is my first serious attempt in becoming familiar with Legacy, but
the SourceWriter is similar to that used in FTM. Both yield a bloated
foot/endnote. I have one database that yields 35 pages of endnotes with
nearly all being one line. The templet approach would considerable
considerably more pages and be harder to follow for the less experienced.

I am at a decision point with FamilyTreeMaker. Either I change programs,
and Legacy looks to be the best option, or build a state-of-the-art XP
machine and stay with v16 of FTM. FTM v16 is not stable in Vista and
researchers with Win7 say forget it. Latter version of FTM are similar to
RootsMagic and designed around marketing, not ease of use.

So much for the soap box. Would you point me to the 2009 archives and I
will see if I can master the master and detail files.

Thanks for your help,
Leonard

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.5 and source citation import?

2012-02-15 Thread Paula Ryburn
Leonard, If I am reading you correctly, I don't go so far as to indicate in the
census detail citation which piece(s) of information are supported. I mean, I
attach the detail citation to the pieces / fields that are supported, but I am
not trying to print that out. I have the little source citation number next to
the field in the report (I'm mostly using FGR these days) and the detail census
citation on the source page at the end. For example, for a new sibling of one
of my direct line ancestors, I would typically cite the census on the name and
birth date/place fields, plus I would add a census event (I write all the other
info in a narrative fashion in the Notes: "She was 12 years old, and attended
school that year."). I typically have other/more citations on the name and
birth date/place for those in my direct line, so the census may have just been
the starting point for the year and state. Definitely, the new siblings would
have a date range based on the age and the census date (except 1900 where the
month & year of birth are given) and a state. I may or may not pursue more
information on the siblings.

Wow, got a bit wordy!

Oh, if I were running a book report (ancestor, descendent), the citations do
include the head of household, so that keeps them separate... not all lumped
into one "US 1900 Illinois Cook Co." citation, for example. (I don't lump
further than county.)

Paula, Thanks. We are sill on topic: getting the source and the text comment to
appear together in the footnote/endnote. Footnotes and Endnotes work the same,
just a matter of where they appear and another one of those personal
preferences. I use both depending on how the report in used; when reviewing a
cousins work it is easier to have the footnotes option on.. This way the notes
appear on the same page as the event cited.

I solved the import riddle with the help of Ward and others, but have not found
a solution to subsequent citations not including the text notes. A good example
would be the 1900 or 1910 census as a source for a persons name, birth year
and state, and marriage year. The first usage appears as it should with the
text, but the two subsequent source citations only appear as the source with out
the text. One for birth year and state and the other for marriage year; two
identical entries. I the same source is used for a child, it would appear less
the text even if other sources are cited in between.

How would the above citations appear on your end. I down loaded my deluxe
version of Legacy and am operating on a Vista machine with SP2 and max memory.

-

SALT LAKE CITY—Three leading genealogy organizations, Archives.com,
FamilySearch International, and findmypast.com, announced today they are
joining forces to launch the 1940 US Census Community Project. The ambitious
project aims to engage online volunteers to quickly publish a searchable,
high quality name index to the 1940 US Census after it is released in April
2012 by the National Archives and Record Administration of the United States
(NARA).

Indexing will be done much like the indexing is now being done through
FamilySearch for its microfilms. The indexes will also be made available
free - but with such a mammoth project, don't expect to find your relatives
the first day the census is released. The more volunteers, the quicker a
full searchable index will be available.

I'm ready. 532 names in my Legacy DB to find.

I have updated my program that reads the Legacy DB and displays the
census status of individuals. The biggest update is the addition of an
option to add the married name to females. Previously the program only
displayed the maiden names.

If you want to see how many people you need to find in the 1940 census,
just run the program specifying only 1940 in the Census Dates field.

You can download the program from:
https://sites.google.com/site/promanowiczsite/censusfinder

If you have any question or suggestions for the program, please reply to
me directly so we don't clutter up the forum.

2012-02-15 Thread Bobby Johnson
Carol,

You can find people in the SSDI with birthdates as early as 1874. Although
they are few of them, it just might be that they are there. You may not find
many that died before 1940 or even 1961 but there are a few. The death index
was not computerized until the early 1960’s Entries before that time are
spotty. Another thing is that self-employed people such as farmers were not
required to get a SSN until the early 1950’s. You should go ahead and tag
these people and give them a quick check to see if they are there.

Re: [LegacyUG] Controlling Subsequent Citation Details [WAS: Legacy 7.5 and source citation import?]

2012-02-15 Thread Ward Walker
It had been my understanding that subsequent citations only apply to
SourceWriter sources. A quick look at the previews of some of my sources
initially appeared to confirm this. However, I now see that text entered on
the Text/Comments tab of a Basic source detail, with the checkbox checked to
include such text on citations, does disappear for subsequent citations. (I
normally use these fields for internal information, only, not for printed
citations.)

So, now I understand that your initial request was to have these Basic,
Detail, Text/Comment fields appear on subseqent citations, so that you could
place different information in each citation. All I can suggest is that you
change what you are placing on this tab, as compared to the first tab (the
Source Detail field on the Detail Information tab). I.e., for each source
detail, append the custom information (e.g., person's name) to the end of
the always-print information (e.g., county, twp, ED#) in the Source Detail
field. Don't print anything from the Text/Comment tab, which is where you
fully record the census family for future reference. Would this work for
you?

As for the state and year, it depends on how much you are a 'lumper' or
'splitter'. For me, these are part of the master source and will always
print. Even if you are an extreme lumper, I would think that the state and
year should be present in every citation (from the detail, in this case).

You are saying that a SourceWriter citation is more verbose than a Basic
source citation. Presumably the difference is not in the data that you type
in, but in the fixed fields. For example, in census templates we see the
publisher "National Archives and Records Administration" fully spelled out
and hardcoded. Also the term "population schedule". But note that in the
subsequent citation, the publisher disappears and "pop. sch." is
abbreviated. The web site, URL, series, and the term "digital images" also
disappear. I can understand that your Basic source citations are briefer
than the equivalent SourceWriter version on the initial citation, but the
subsequent citation seems pretty bare-bones to me.

Another quick test reveals that the endnotes bug is still present:
subsequent citations are used in footnotes but not in endnotes! This was
reported over 3 years ago.

The links to the archives are at the bottom of each LUG e-mail. There are
many discussions about lumping/splitting, and a few about subsequent
citations.

Thanks for your help,
Leonard

I am wondering if anyone has entered NSW Colonial Secretary's Papers

The Colonial Secretary's Papers contains records for the Colony of

convict lists, assignment of convicts, victualling, land grants, memoranda,
copies of all official correspondence within the colony, between NSW and other

Brother and Sister as options aren't enabled unless there is at least one
parent. You can't move him down into the children's area unless there's at least
one parent. Double-clicking on the blank mother or father 'creates' the missing
parents as unknowns. Then you ad the brother or sister and move him down into
the children's area.

[LegacyUG] Producing search list

2012-02-15 Thread Jean Suplick
I want to conduct a Social Security Death Index search blitz and try to
locate entries for all the eligible people in my database who don't already
have an existing source citation for the SSDI. So...

I'd like to produce a search list of all the people in my database with 2
conditions:

   1. They died after 1950 (or some death year)
   2. They do not already have a source citation for the Social Security
Death Index

I can produce a list of those that already HAVE the SSDI source citation,
but I can't figure out how to produce a list for those who DO NOT HAVE the
source citation.

I am using the Search --> Find --> Detailed Search screen.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jean Suplick

I think what people are saying is not that the half-relationship
actually exists but that Legacy mistakenly thinks it did. It sometimes
happen that people find "phantom marriages" in their family file and
this can cause children to be added to what looks like the right parents
but aren't.

I'm sure your cousin will confirm that there were no half-siblings
involved. It's Legacy you need to check with. Look at each person in
the line and see if any of them are shown as having 2 spouses.

2012-02-15 Thread Colin Liddell
Wendy, thank you for your reply.

In my case there are no half marriages or broken ;line in the descent from
ym g grandmother to me and in the case of my cousin, I am fairly positive
there are none in her line but I will cjeck again.
I have run Check and Repair with no improvement so my next step is to check
with my cousin that there are no half marriages in her line, that there is a
direct line from her gg grandmother to her.
Thank you for your suggestion.

Colin
