Event Pictures selection - was - RE: [LegacyUG] Questions about Sorting and Printing

2012-04-06 Thread Jan Roberts
Sorry, but for the Descendants Narrative report at least the Event Pictures is
greyed out on the Pictures tab if you HAVEN'T selected Event Pictures on the
Include tab. Moreover, if you have selected Event Pictures in the Include tab,
Event Pictures in the Pictures tab is ticked, but greyed out so you can't
deselect it. There is also still the issue of selection of Event Pictures is
not sticking once the screen has been closed. If you select Event addresses
that sticks, but not Event Pictures. The pictures print for that report, but
next time you have to reselect Event Pictures. Using version 7.5.0.180. Also,
just noticed that the top and bottom margins are huge in the Descendant
Narrative report. For some reason they have set themselves at 4.386cm for top
margin and 3.81cm at bottom and right margins, and 2.54cm for left margin. I
have reset them, and they seem to have stuck. Also, Indent each generation had
changed itself from 0cm to 1.3cm.

Cheers

[LegacyUG] Search List Question

2012-04-06 Thread Tony Rolfe
Thanks to all for trying to help with my problem. To recreate my
problem, try the following:

1. Create a search list (use the one you are currently using if you
don't mind getting out of synch). Make a note of the current person if
you are using an existing one, or note the second person on the list if
a new one.

2. Open the search list and navigate to someone far away from the
current (or first) person.

3. Note this person's name and then Double-click them.

4. Do a find next.

If you have my bug, you will get either the second person in the list or
the person following the one who was your previous current one.

If you don't have my bug, you will get the person following the one you
double-clicked.

I believe that double-clicking from the search list should reset the
pointer but, in my setup, it doesn't.

My current search list is over 1000 people and will take me several
months to complete. I don't want to have to stop all other work
requiring search lists while I'm doing it. I have everyone tagged on
tag 1. I can recreate the search list any time I want simply by
untagging everyone with a 1911 census source and searching tag1=tagged.

However, I want to keep all the "processed but not found" people in the
list because I'm doing a quick first-pass through the list and if
someone doesn't leap out at me I'm skipping onto the next. That way
I'll get to look at everyone in a reasonable time frame and be able to
go back to the beginning for a longer in-depth look at those who were
skipped the first time.

So, when I recreate the search list, I want to be able to get to the
last one checked easily and have "find next" work from that person, but
the only way I can currently do it is by repeated "find next" until I
get there.

I know I can do it with using a second tag for those I've checked and
want to keep, but that relies on me remembering to do it each time and I
won't.

I've reported the problem as a bug. Hopefully it will be accepted and
fixed. I can't see it being a huge coding exercise.

Thanks again for all the advice. I've learned a lot even though some of
it isn't solving the main issue.

Cheers

Tony

BUT if the Census is listed as a “Event” for each person in that family, then
the event and location will travel for ALL of them as the children move on.
Also if the parents get married again, then this same event and location will
travel also.

A lot of Census entries may NOT have a marriage to do as you are suggestion.

How will you handle those?

Folks:

I have had a number of requests for the information I volunteered to
provide for publishing a book using Legacy Family Tree.
Rather than answer each email individually, I have placed a PDF file
in my DropBox Public folder that you should be able to download the
file at the following URL:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2949068/How-to-Write-Book_Legacy_Family_Tree_v0.2_6Apr12.pdf

Or, you can use the following TinyURL:

This might be a good topic for a Legacy Webinar??

Enjoy!

Not sure that I understood what you meant by the bookmarks not available during
the search list approach. The bookmarks are available in the search list by
going to options>go to Bookmarks and the bookmarks window will pop up and the
last bookmark that was set will be at the top of the list in the window and when
you click on the Go to button it takes you to that person in the list that is

Re: [LegacyUG] Research Notes--how do you do it?

2012-04-06 Thread Paula Ryburn
First---thank you to everyone who responded. In light of the basic research
I've done about getting certified, I am taking what you all have said seriously
to heart to keep a much better record within Legacy of the research I am doing.

Right now, I am adding a 1940 census to-do item now, *if* I don't find them on
my first pass. My parents' families were both in Chicago, so I got their ED #'s
from stevemorse.org and *thought* I was all set. Ha! So, I openedindividual
to-do items for each head of household to record the negative results and next
steps. It's amazing how much people moved around in a city back then. It seems
my mother's family moved the month after the census was taken! ;)

Thanks again!

I use my to-to list to keep track of everything I need to do in list form (I
need to order microfilm or a marriage license or a death certificate etc). The
research notes are more of a narrative talking about my theories and why I do or
don’t think something is true. I do record my negative results in the notes
because it is a tad easier to see than pulling up the closed to-dos.

I use the individual to-do’s like I listed above. I wouldn’t want to add a
to-do for the 1940 census to every single person in my file that might appear in
the 1940. That is way too general and it would take way too much time. I do
use the general to-dos for things like, “Check Forest Park Cemetery for any
Fousts”

I use the locality field to sort by repository (if that makes sense). I don’t
add the actual repository (the repository tab) to the to-do but I do keep the
repositories up to date with current addresses, phone numbers, hours, fees etc.

Hi, all. This may sound silly, but I'm about to "get serious" about doing my
genealogy research. (!) Wanted to double-check some things with you.

Based on the posts I've read here, I believe most of you have moved from using
the Individual's "Research Notes" field to using the To-Do List for your
research notes... right? You record the results of the research on that tab,
close the item, and then open new To-Do items based on those results. These
results would be both positive and negative.

Am I missing anything? Have you found any issues in reporting the Results
later? Like, much later after you may have forgotten your process in reaching a
conclusion?

Do you do most of your To-Do items by Individual? The last time I did something
"by Repository," I used a search list and printed a report. (It was a
cemetery.) I don't see how using a To-Do item would be easier... am I missing
something? Case in point: the 1940 Census. Is anyone using To-Do items, or
opting for the new tool instead?

Thanks,

Linda,

What files do you have in Dropbox? Is it just the .fdb file? I'm not an expert
on customizations because I don't use them a lot, but I think at a minimum you
would need to have all of your .usr files in Dropbox as well.

As a test, if you change one of the settings on your desktop, will it stick? If
so, that would indicate you actually have separate usr files on the two

RE: [LegacyUG] families app

2012-04-06 Thread Paul Gray
As far as I know, there is no GEDCOM involved with Families. It has a two way
interface with your Legacy file, updates on either your computer or your tablet
are synced to the other. The Ipad version uses Itunes to sync, Android version
uses a separate syncing app.

Paul

Why does "Gedcom your file into it" set off warning bells in my head?
Don't we lose things in that translation?
So wouldn't we never want to sync back from our phone to our desktop?

Kathy,

I use families, but mostly for always with me reference on both android and
iPad. It will have all documents, photos, sources, notes, etc. It's fantastic
and I consider it easy to use. It's quite intuitive and very much like Legacy.
If your can use a smart phone for anything you can use Families. All you need
to do initially is Gedcom your file into it. It just took a few minutes.

Hope this helps.

Also agree with Russ, your signature or something kicked your message into my

And that is why I said use the Bookmark on the person that you want to
comeback to and then just call up the bookmark from within the list! The
little book icon in the lower left screen opens the bookmarks and you can
set three people bookmarked on the family view screen so it is just one
click and you are on that person!

I have mentioned this on the list before. The suggestion I was given, (and I do
do this now), is to work off of the search list. Tag the people and then search
for the tag. Edit the people right from the search list. That way you can go
down the list in order.

Paula and Russ

Thanks for contributing.

The problem is not find out where to restart in the list. As Paula says I can
bookmark or simply make a note of the person.

The problem occurs when I have finished processing that person and want to move
onto the next. "Find Next" doesn't work. It gives me the second person in the
list, not the person following the one I've just processed.

Yes, I could open the search list, look it up manually to find the next person
and edit them but it is a waste of time and effort when there is a "Find Next"
feature which should be one keystroke away.

Also, when I meander away from the current person (say I get an e-mail about a
different part of my tree) and spend time researching there.
When I've finished I should be able to go "Find Next" followed by "find
previous" to get me back to the person in the list I'm currently processing.
But I can't.

The only solution at the moment is to create the list and then "Find Next" a
couple of hundred times to get to the person, then everything works.

Cheers

Tony

Re: [LegacyUG] Search List Question

2012-04-06 Thread Paula Ryburn
OH! I see what you're saying.
However, I don't remember having that problem.
I've used tagged lists a LOT -- cleaning up source citations, to name just one
large task. As I finished a person, I would untag them and go to the next
tagged person. I typically would tag a small enough group to finish fixing them
in one sitting, but... If it was a larger group and I had to "come back" to it,
I would just click "next" on that tag and get to work.
So, maybe I DON'T see what you're saying / don't understand the task you are
trying to complete.

Admittedly, I do not remember every using "Find Next" or "Find Previous"---once
I have the people of interest tagged, I don't use the Search anymore---so I will
refrain from further commenting. ;)

Either double click on the "X" in the Search List or click on the tag in the

I am unable to reproduce this failure. I routinely create search lists
for all people with research notes. I then tag everyone in the search
list with tag 1 and create a search list for tag 1. (The reason for the
second list is to allow me to create other searches and still recreate
my "Research List" by searching on tag 1 again). If I edit the first
one in the list, then go to someone else (even one who is not on the
list) all I do is hit F3 (shortcut for "find next" and it takes me right
to that person.

You appear to have a glitch in your setup. I am running the latest
build on Win 7 Home Premium.

Families app is great

I have a very large Legacy file.403,000 plus and over 6600 pictures. Anyway
itunes transfer only takes 15-20 minutes. (wi-fi takes longer)

Because my file is huge functionality slows down but the average user can
zoom through and the app is great. Of course the iPad has a

larger screen and keyboard so input is easier.

Good luck

I'm going to the family history library tomorrow and I realize I should have
considered this before butnow I'm in a bit of a hurry.

I used to use a Legacy add on of some sort on a palm device and I don't even
know what I've done with that it's been so long since I used it plus I've
been planning to get families for Legacy anyway so I can use it on my phone.

My question is, for your users of the Families app, how long does it take
you to get your Legacy file synced with the app? Is there a big learning
curve? I just don't know if I'm going to be able to get it done in the
morning before we leave if it's not simple. If it's a little time
intensive, I will wait and just print out some FGS for the families I know
that I need.

Thanks for your comments, if anyone sees this tonight :-) Kathy

It seems to me that it is quite possible to do what you ask. Create
your source list, tag it and sort it by RIN. Go to first person and
process. Remove the selected tag from that person. Using the Indi Tag
field at bottom of screen select the appropriate tag and use the "next"
arrow. Process the next person. Etc.

If you tackle a few people on your search list and then process a few
people who *do not* have that tag set, using the Indi Tag Next arrow
again will take you to the next RIN on your Search list. I had thought
that if you processed a few people on your search list, say the first
10, then jumped to someone near the bottom of the list, say the 34th
person, to process them in some other way (you would not remove the tag)
that trying to move to the next tagged person would take you to the 35th
person on your list, but this does not seem to be so.

I have tested this method with a few different ways of diverting from
the search list and it *seems* to work just as you want, so give it a
try and let us know.

The problem with the bookmark is when you press F3 for the next person in the
search list it will jump back to the first person in the list and not the next

And that is why I said use the Bookmark on the person that you want to comeback
to and then just call up the bookmark from within the list! The little book
icon in the lower left screen opens the bookmarks and you can set three people
bookmarked on the family view screen so it is just one click and you are on
that person!

2012-04-06 Thread Alan Pereira
The way I get around this problem is to use 2 tags. Tag everyone in the search
list with one tag. As you search through the list tag each person searched
with the second tag. Change the search criteria to tag 1 tagged and tag 2
untagged. Every now and then run a new search with the new tagging criteria to
shorten the list to those people you have yet to process.
If you want at any time to refresh the original list, revert to the original
search criteria and generate a new list, tagging them with the first tag.
Switch to tag 1 tagged and tag 2 untagged as criteria and you will be back to
your revised list with the first person being someone you have yet to do.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Search List Question

Mike

I'm probably not explaining my situation clearly.

I realise that when I rebuild a search list I lose the context of the previous
version of the list. It is as if it were a completely new list (in fact, it is
a new list).

My problem is that I don't want to do the usual thing with a new search list
and start at the beginning. I want to start somewhere in the middle. I want
some way to say "Start with this person and then go forward or backwards from
here". The only way I can achieve this is to start at the front and "find
next" a couple of hundred times.

Saving and restoring the list would achieve this, provided the context of the
list was saved and restored together with the list of entries.
The only issue would be how to handle folk in the list who were deleted before
the list was restored; but that must be handled now, since I could delete
someone who is in the current list.

I believe that it is a bug for the context not to be set to the point where you
jump into the list. I'll report it as such and will suggest the save restore
feature as an enhancement.

Cheers

Tony
