[LegacyUG] Changes of name

2012-06-23 Thread Tony Rolfe
I have a distant cousin who appears to have changed his name (actually
dropped the first part of it) during his early teens. He was born
Bernard William Smelter Joseph Young and appears as such in the first
census. He is at boarding school 10 years later and is known as B W
Smelter Young. In all records I can find thereafter, he is simply
Smelter Joseph Young.

Is there any way to set him up so reports initially use Bernard but
after a certain date use Smelter?

Thanks

Tony

Legacy "Help" says that to sort children by dob, click "sort."

Where do I find the "sort" I need to click??

[LegacyUG] Future of my family file?

2012-06-23 Thread Susan Perrett
I would like to be able to create some sort of Report, e.g. .DOC or
.RTF of the whole of my family file, so that when I depart this life,
there would be some sort of readable documentation of everyone in my
family (file). Not just my paternal line but everyone, including all
the people around the world that are connected in some way to my family.

By doing this I can leave my family history recorded, without a
computer program needed to see the file.

Is this possible, if so, where would I start? And with whom would I
start with?

On my maternal side of the family I have been able to trace back into
the Scottish kings, via a female line and on my paternal line I have
been able to get back, via a female line, to King Alfred and further
back still, just following the line of his. My whole database amounts
to 11,314 people, plus over 1000 Pictures.

I realise this would amount to probably well in excess of 2000 pages,
which I would not print out or even edit - I would leave that to some
one else in the future But at least they would have all the
information. I would save it all to a CD/DVD to distribute to various
people/libraries around the world etc.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy split screen view on 2 monitors

2012-06-23 Thread Carl Cox

We must be talking past each other, because I often use this method
within a single file and between different files in a split screen. The
only requirement is that you "save" the individual information as it
currently is, regardless of when it was entered. That saved information
becomes a template from which you can use any piece of information you
wish, in any database. I don't know if Legacy remembers the last one
saved when it is closed - it very well could. I have 2 files that I
record current happenings in, identically in both, and I call up split
screen, enter the personal information in one database, save it, then go
to the other database and copy each newly entered information by
clicking on the field name. Is that how you are trying to use this
method?

I don't think that applies to Legacy's ability to copy information from
one person to another. In split screen, Legacy remembers the last saved
individual information, and that can be applied to any other individual
in either database. I just tried split screen with the same database in
both, and copied my fathers death information in one view to me in the
other view. My experience has been that there are no restrictions in
using the last saved individual information screen anywhere.

If you pin the folder for your files to your taskbar in Windows7, the mouseover
calls it Windows

Explorer so I guess the term still exists. In most versions of Windows the
shortcut to open Windows Explorer is: Windows Key + E. The Windows Key is the
key on your keyboard that has the Windows Logo. It's usually in the bottom
left corner of the keyboard.

Windows Explorer was open to "Libraries" when I pinned it to the taskbar, so
now it opens there, which is just fine with me, but others might prefer it to

One neat thing about Legacy and split screen is that you can save the persons
details in one side of the split and then paste any of them to the other side
by left clicking on the name of the field. I don't know if that will help. When
a field is occupied in the 'copy to' screen, Legacy asks if you want to replace
Alice C. with Alice Chloe (as an example), so you can compare and remember the
change. You do not need to make any changes in the 'from' screen, just bring it
up and save it, which puts it in the ready memory of Legacy.

I am finding that Legacy 7.5.0.200 locks up consistently
when I click on the Locations icon. The Master Location
list never appears on the screen though the upper-left
border is drawn and a white rectangle is produced that
covers about 1/6th of the screen. This happens consistently
and is recoverable only by shutting down Legacy via Task
Manager. I have run File Maintenance for both Master List
Cleanup and Check/Repair.

Re: [LegacyUG] What is Windows Explorer concept?

2012-06-23 Thread SHIRLEY ANDERSON
If you pin the folder for your files to your taskbar in Windows7, the mouseover
calls it Windows

Explorer so I guess the term still exists. In most versions of Windows the
shortcut to open Windows Explorer is: Windows Key + E. The Windows Key is the
key on your keyboard that has the Windows Logo. It's usually in the bottom left
corner of the keyboard.

Windows Explorer was open to "Libraries" when I pinned it to the taskbar, so now
it opens there, which is just fine with me, but others might prefer it to open
at a different location.

Windows Explorer is a term that is rarely used anymore. If you have Windows
Vista or 7, I believe the folder that appears when you click on your Start
button is labelled "Computer". I do know that, if I right click on the the
folder icon on my task bar in Windows 7, "Windows Explorer" is one of the
options which will appear in the pop-up menu. Anyhoo, before there was "My
Computer" or "Computer" in the later incarnations of Windows, there was "Windows
Explorer" (Think Internet Explorer sorta, for your computer files.) in the
earlier incarnations of Windows. Same function, different name.

When I click on my Start button in Windows 7 I don't get a folder. I get
a list of programs pinned to the Start Menu. That's what it's called -
the Start Menu. Not the same thing as Windows Explorer. If they'd
stopped calling it that it wouldn't come up, with a right-click, as
Windows Explorer.

[LegacyUG] Married names in Name List

2012-06-23 Thread Jenny M Benson
Here's an odd thing.

I don't usually have married names "switched on" because I always use a
married woman's maiden name in almost all references to her, but I must
have selected that option at some time, for some reason, because when I
wanted to check the number of individuals in my family file just now I
opened the Name List and noticed that it said "Name List contains 4469
names including married names." I unticked the option to show married
names and the message then was "Name List contains 4465 individuals".

I definitely have considerably more than 4 married women in my file, so
why is this message not showing a more realistic figure?

There's nothing stopping *you* from creating your own event type for this.

Go to View--> Master Lists --> Event Definition

and press the Add button. Now, use the supplied sentence structures as a guide
for creating your new Event Type.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy split screen view on 2 monitors

2012-06-23 Thread Pat Hickin
Could you temporarily name your good guy John A lastname, the other guy
John B lastname and add John B into your good file. Then merge John A and
B and edit the result??

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy split screen view on 2 monitors

2012-06-23 Thread John Roose
Ian -

Open Legacy in split screen view. DO NOT maximize the screen in your
monitor.

Then, stretch Legacy across the two monitors (pull left or right side of
Legacy across to the second monitor).

You can then size the screen to both monitors - but DO NOT maximize.

There's nothing stopping *you* from creating your own event type for this.

Go to View--> Master Lists --> Event Definition

and press the Add button. Now, use the supplied sentence structures as a guide
for creating your new Event Type.

I don't suppose there is a standard way. I put it in the Marriage
Notes: "A & B were married by Rev X. Witnesses were Y and Z. The
ceremony was followed by a Reception at Place, attended by 150 guests"
