Subject: [LegacyUG] Master Source Title

Hello:  I’m trying to add a master source for a ‘travel’ event’.  It’s not
immigration or emigration, or anything to do with passport records, the person
is just traveling, in this case back to his homeland years after his
immigration, for a visit.  Any suggestions? Can ‘Travel’ be a master source, or
is there another/better source title?

RE: [LegacyUG] Master Source Title

2012-08-10 Thread Judith

Well, the travel itself is the Event, not the Source. What is your Source for
the Event? Is it your Personal Knowledge? Travel Documents?
  Diary entries? Photographs? Something else?

Yes, thanks for putting it that way, the source then would be the passenger
lists, simple.
Thank you,

Re: [LegacyUG] County List

2012-08-10 Thread SHIRLEY ANDERSON
Russell, we must be using different versions of Legacy. On mine, which is
7.5.0.191, I don't have the icons you describe. in Tools, the last item is
"County Verifier List". The message that told me I had an incorrect county also
had a button that linked to the list.

Tim, thank you. I will contact Sherry.

Marianne,
First you can customize Legacy to Verify USA Counties in Place Names:
Options>Customize and on the Data Entry Tab under Adding/Editing check the
box for that option.

You can get to the County verifier list by going to Tools>Geo Location List
and then click on the Flag button or from the Master Location List and right
click on the Globe Icon (Geo database options) and pick USA County
Verifier... and last if you are on an Individual's Information screen then
you can click on the Globe binocular Icon (Show Geo Location List) and click
on the Flag on that screen.

[LegacyUG] Source Clipboard Detail problem

2012-08-10 Thread Fran Clark
I frequently transcribe documents and entered this information in the
text/comment area of the Source Clipboard. Today when doing the normal copy and
paste from my word document to the text area, the output preview does not show
line spacing and leaves off the first word of each line. I have run
check/repair but that makes no difference.

It seems that some time ago this problem was addressed on this list, but I
could not find it in the archives. Could some kind lister help?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [LegacyUG] error 3163

2012-08-10 Thread R G Strong-genes
Robert,
According to the error number:
• Backup Error 3163

This error is caused if the zip file being created reaches the 2GB maximum
file size that is allowed in Windows.

So how big is the GEDCOM file you are trying to import? If you imported it
into a new family file then you could just merge that new family file into
your working file. Have you tried that?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy > Dropbox > Syncback

2012-08-10 Thread JLB
Yep, I think we've pretty well determined that keeping our genealogy
databases and other files on cloud services are not a great idea. Was
just pointing out the difference between Dropbox and SugarSync. I hadn't
thought of all the things that could go wrong on SugarSync as well.
Thanks for the warning.

I keep a backup from the Legacy installation to several external drives
as well, although if the present one went bad I'd still be losing up to
two weeks of work.

After watching Thomas' webinar I decided the only files I keep in
Dropbox are shared folders and portable apps. I have SugarSync installed
but don't use it presently. Same with Google Drive and Amazon Cloud. I
was curious to see how they all work but don't really have a use for
them except as a secondary backup, perhaps someday.

I believe it was Bill Gates who said someday we won't care if all our
files are online, personal computers will disappear to all intents and
purposes and it will be one seamless experience everywhere we go.
(something like that) Not today.

Re: [LegacyUG] everyone comes up on the index two times

2012-08-10 Thread MJ SA
Hi everyone, Ok so I do have my own trees on legacy. On Ancestry I
have a tree also and with the very limited family I have found I added
these people on ancestry, actually it was most of my own research so
I could confirm that it was a true relation. Since I don't sync
ancestry and legacy, I don't even know if I can, I was not putting
everything on my family tree on legacy. So what I wanted to do was
take my ancestry tree and put it on legacy as a new tree.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy > Dropbox > Syncback

2012-08-10 Thread Lee Bruch
Just be sure that if your files on SugarSynch get changed or deleted for any of
many reasons that the following will not occur - there is a real danger that it
could happen - check to make sure:
A possibility:
1. your files on SugarSynch get deleted or changed by any of many unexpected
causes
2. you open your computer and it automatically synchs
3. all your files synch to the last action, that of the change or delection
that happened at SugarSuynch
4. The, when you look at your files, since they synched to the latest changes,
you find them gone or changed.
It's a possibility - just make da..ed sure that it can't happen

With SugarSync, on the other hand, you don't move files to a folder such as 'My
SugarSync'. Right-click on Legacy in its default location and 'Add Folder to
SugarSync'. If your SugarSync account disappears, Legacy will still be on your
hard-drive.

Subject: [LegacyUG] County List

I just got a message telling me that there never was a county in New Mexico
called Doña Ana County. When I checked the county list, the county is called
Dona Ana.

Wikipedia calls it Doña Ana.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do%C3%B1a_Ana_County,_New_Mexico

How do I add the alternate spelling to the county list?

You don't. What you are being advised is to download the gedcom and
open that into a new Legacy family file which you can then "clean up"
before merging it with your existing file.

All of which supposes that you had an existing family file to start
with. It is not clear to me whether this is so of whether you only had
your tree on Ancestry and are now moving it to Legacy for the first
time. Perhaps you can clarify this.

You didn't make it clear it was your own tree initially.

Many of the Ancestry trees contain errors.

I found one where my 3x great uncle was attached to the wrong parents,
the wrong wife and the wrong birth place. When I asked about this,
the person who'd put the tree up didn't both correcting it, checking
out what I had but simply made the tree private.

The same 3x great uncle was on another tree with three different
wives, three different birth places in three different counties and
three different occupations - none of it correct. Again, the person
who put the tree up not only wouldn't accept their own research was
wonky, but that it was nothing to do with my 3x great uncle.

Am I right about my 3xgreat uncle? Three cousins independent of each
other and me all went back to the same place, one of them a direct
descendent of my 3x great uncle :))

> download with an .fdb?

You can't download an .fdb because ANcestry isn't the same as Legacy.
Download the gedcom (ged) then import it into Legacy and save it.
You'll then have your .fdb.

Click on File, go down to Import and it gives you the option to import
a ged.

With SugarSync, on the other hand, you don't move files to a folder such
as 'My SugarSync'. Right-click on Legacy in its default location and
'Add Folder to SugarSync'. If your SugarSync account disappears, Legacy

Don't run off to soon. I have been here for _many_ years. I have been
chastised, had my feelings hurt and even banned :)

I am one to always apologize, yet keep on hanging around doing the same

Sorry I wasn't that clear the first time, Charani. Maybe
it's the heat here, which is around 116ºF/46.1ºC in the
afternoon, and drops to a mere 90ºF/32.2ºC during the night.
:-) Good job the humidity seldom climbs above 20%. :-)
Dropbox is a good secondary storage area, and can provide a
convenient means of transferring files, but I would never
use it as the primary storage location for anything, even if
I chose to pay for a higher level of service to eliminate
the threat of files expiring and being erased by Dropbox staff.

It would print out as you entered it. But the way to Source each
individual "note" would be to enter some sort of abbreviation or
indication at the end of each paragraph.

Say, for example, the various Sources for the Notes includes "the
Anderson Family Tree", "the Barnes photo album" and "Charles's Diary."
At the end of the paragraph dealing with info from the Family Tree you
type "[Anderson]", at the end of the para dealing with the photos you
type "[Barnes]" and so on.

"general" with footnotes? That is, sequential notes each with a source attached
- would that print out as a narrative? The only way I see now is to transfer a
report to a word processing program and rewrite! I love Legacy, but this is a
weak area in my view.

Re: [LegacyUG] everyone comes up on the index two times

2012-08-10 Thread Ron Ferguson
What I would do, if it is at all possible for you, is to use File>Restore
Family File using a back-up from before the time you downloaded the Ancestry
file. It is recommended by Legacy that when downloading an external file it
is downloaded to a new .fdb file and only merged after weeding out those
individuals which are not required.

Personally, I have never, nor never will, download and merge anybody's work
without checking the data from original sources.

Amazingly, my family tree grew, until I looked at the index and saw

2012-08-10 Thread MJ SA
Actually, it is my tree that I downloaded from Ancestry, I do not sync
legacy and Ancestry because I don't want to put everyone on Ancestry.
Than I found relatives on ancestry, I attached more people to my tree,
so that was the only way I could think of to get a new family file on
legacy. Does that make sense? I am on my first cup of coffee, lol.

Synching both my machines could be useful (providing they don't both
sink, of course).

My concern though had been that if for any reason I couldn't access an
account and the plug was pulled, everything would be deleted and I'd
be sunk. John's clarified that one.

I still don't think Dropbox or any similar cloud computing would be an
answer for me.

After what you've been through, I can understand your outlook.

My husband's been through the mill a bit too. So's my son who has
been prodded and poked all his life to such an extent because of his
disabilities, he gets unco-operative now when the hospital or doctor
wants to do tests or checks.

As you say, it's seeing the children suffering. It makes you wonder
how life can be so cruel to innocent little 'uns and cause so much
grief to their families and friends.

Although Travel is, as you say, an event, I don't see why you couldn't
use it as a source title to encompass all/any sources/events that
might fall under that heading.

Legacy is flexible enough that you can use it however you see fit even

It's probably because you did download a tree from Ancestry (very
dodgy move IMO).

Ask Legacy to do a merge *but* be aware many of the trees on Ancestry
are full of errors as a result of guesswork, hijacking other people's
trees, etc.

It would have been better to have downloaded the tree to a new family
file first so you could confirm the accuracy of the tree you got from
Ancestry before merging it with your own tree.

All the webinars are free.

If you can't register and watch them at the time, they are available
for about a week to ten days after.

Try using MiniReminder. It's a handy, free, program that's useful for
all sorts of things, not just webinars and birthdays.

Can't tell you how pleased I am you said that! I accidentally deleted a

Well, the travel itself is the Event, not the Source. What is your
Source for the Event? Is it your Personal Knowledge? Travel Documents?
  Diary entries? Photographs? Something else?

The Source Title (and the template you use if you are using
SourceWriter) will depend entirely on the type of Source you are citing.

A *VERY* good reason to keep your main Legacy files away from the DropBox folder
:-) I.e. only use the DropBox folder as a backup area and _copy_ your FDB file
to it rather than pointing DropBox at the 'real' file folder.
