Jim,

I am right in thinking that you are still using V5. If so do you really expect
Legacy to amend such an outdated version?

This does not mean I agree with your comments, I don't.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to source change of gender

2012-09-11 Thread Western Spirit Wood Creations

I would suggest putting your findings in the Notes for the individual.
You may also put in an Alt Birth using the same birth information but adding
a note that the 1891 Census contains an error on gender and sourcing it with
the 1901 and 1911 Censuses.
If you also use new.FamilySearch verify that the information there is
correct or corrected.
Bev March

The 1891 census shows Bertie Knight as a 4-year-old daughter. I added
her as such. Then she appeared in 1901 as a 14-year-old son, working as
a hay binder. In 1911, she is also a son and still working as a hay binder.

It seems reasonably obvious that he was mislabelled in 1891, so I
clicked the "M" button and tried to add the 1911 census as a source for
the sex change. "The cursor is not in a field which accepts a specific
source". There doesn't appear to be a way to source the gender
specifically? Any advice on how to source this?

Cheers

RE: [LegacyUG] New files

2012-09-11 Thread Jan Roberts
Sorry to contradict you Lavern, but using the Event Clipboard DOES copy any
sources attached to the Event. Jenny meant that physically copying and pasting
the details of an Event (using CTRL+C) does not copy the Source, but by using
the Copy Event Source icon copies everything.

Thanks.

The procedure JL outlined is correct for copying the event;

however, as Jenny confirmed, the source does not copy.

I suspect the easiest (and quickest) option is to just

re-create the source for this child, but I'm happy to read
up on Events and the Source Clipboard again... always learning!

You don't usually use Copy & Paste to replicate and Event and if you do
you won't get the Source copied over.

I suggest you read up in Help on Event Clipboard - on the Index tab type
Event and then select Clipboard from the list of topics displayed under
Event. You should probably also read up on the Source Clipboard.

Re: [LegacyUG] Show me your printer

2012-09-11 Thread Karen and Jim
Sherry,

I'm assume that Legacy is using Windoz
Print Preview for the report screen display.
And I find no fault in that. In fact it is a plus
in that Legacy doesn't need to add
it to its own large code baggage.

I see I have Microsoft XPS Document Writer
installed in Printers and Faxes. Nothing else.
That seems to satisfy Legacy's printer requirement.

I've tried to duplicate this no-screen problem,
but with no results. I've rebooted Windoz,
a warm boot. No luck. Maybe I need to
shutdown completely. I'll try that later.

Again I say you have a bug.

Re: [LegacyUG] Paper filing question (by family)

2012-09-11 Thread SHIRLEY ANDERSON
I put all of the records for an individual together. (I use 3-ring binders, but
I have described it as if the dividers were folders.) If I don't have any
descendants for the person, I put their records with their parents. If I later
find descendants, I move the records. I keep the photos in that folder also,
except for very immediate family, where because of the volume, I have a second
folder for the photos. A group photo or record that involves more than one
sibling goes with the parents.

I don't save most census records. And I don't save any as paper copies. I
simply don't have the space for them. There would be thousands. I link to them
in Ancestry and I can quickly go there if I have questions. If there are no
online records, such as the Scotland census in Ancestry, and I have obtained the
record elsewhere, I store those in a folder Country>Census>Year. File is
labeled with year and household name, and sometimes location information, e.g.
1901RodgerJames_646_60_18.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Paper filing question (by family)

I file my papers by family (I believe it's the system by Mills?), and have a
question for those of you who do likewise. I don't wish to change how I file
the papers, because I do my research by family.

For a daughter, I have been filing all her papers for events prior to her
marriage (e.g., her birth record) in her parent's folder. Then I file all her
papers for events after her marriage (including after her husband's death, where
applicable) in her marriage folder. I haven't run into a case in my lineage
where the widow has remarried, but I would put her papers, beginning with that
marriage record, in a new folder for the second marriage.

For a son, I had not been doing likewise... or at least I was not consistent.
Most times, I put all his papers (including birth record) in his marriage
folder, but discovered I had not done so on my current research project; I had
filed the birth register in his parents' folder.

Further, for most collateral lines (which up until recently I have not been
researching), I leave all the other children's papers in the parents' folder.

So, my question is this: Where do YOU file the papers for life events prior to
marriage? In the parents' folder? Or in their own folder?
Follow-up questions: Do you treat sons and daughters the same? Do you treat
grown, unmarried children the same?

Thanks in advance for your thoughtful replies,

If it's an Event you're talking about and I think from what you said, it
is, click the Edit button for that Event on a person where it's entered
correctly. Over on the right side, under the bigger buttons - under Help
are two smaller buttons, one for copy, one for paste. Click the copy
button which is the first one. Go to the child you missed, click Edit
and then click the Paste button.

There is something in the options you can change. It asks you if they are
living or dead based on what age you have in this option. You can pump the age
up to something like 999 and then it won't ask you anymore.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Living or Dead - take 2

Hi again,

I'm using version 5 Deluxe.
And I still think it is the best of the best.
And I've been using genealogy software since Roots II and CP/M in the mid 1980s.
But.
Here is what is happening with Legacy.
1. Henry Kirk is born in 1917 and I enter him into Legacy.
2. When I save, I'm asked whether he is Living or Dead.
There is no "?" as there is for sex. I enter "Yes".
3. I don't know if he is alive or dead as I just found him on the internet as
the son of ... long dead in Denmark.
4. Later I find his confirmation record and I enter that data.
5. Again I'm asked whether he is Living or Dead even thou I have already listed
him as living.
6. Later I find Henry has married and when I save his data, again I'm asked
whether he is Living or Dead.
7. Every time I open and save Henry's file, I'm asked again, nag, nag, nag, and
I don't really know if he is dead or alive.

Can I turn this nagger off?

On the 6th I asked here "Living or Dead", which to use and decided to give the
person life. But this has become a nuisance.

I've now changed Henry to Dead and the nuisance has gone away.
And from now on I'll pronounce all are dead when asked, unless I know otherwise
or have turned the nagger off.

[LegacyUG] Living or Dead - take 2

2012-09-11 Thread Karen and Jim
Hi again,

I'm using version 5 Deluxe.
And I still think it is the best of the best.
And I've been using genealogy software since
Roots II and CP/M in the mid 1980s.
But.
Here is what is happening with Legacy.
1. Henry Kirk is born in 1917 and I enter him into Legacy.
2. When I save, I'm asked whether he is Living or Dead.
There is no "?" as there is for sex. I enter "Yes".
3. I don't know if he is alive or dead as I just found him
on the internet as the son of ... long dead in Denmark.
4. Later I find his confirmation record and I enter that data.
5. Again I'm asked whether he is Living or Dead even thou
I have already listed him as living.
6. Later I find Henry has married and when I save his data,
again I'm asked whether he is Living or Dead.
7. Every time I open and save Henry's file, I'm asked again,
nag, nag, nag, and I don't really know if he is dead or alive.

Sorry, I've tried, but I don't know how to accomplish this. I don't have a
problem highlighting the text, then doing a copy/paste,
but I don't know how do I get the source to copy? Thanks...

Re: [LegacyUG] Paper filing question (by family)

2012-09-11 Thread JLB
Although I file by MRIN, the question is still applicable.

I put all records for a person in their MRIN folder (and under their
MRIN in paper filing) regardless of whether it's before a marriage or
after. Except, for instance, where they're in a census record as a
child. All census records are filed under head of household.

I could just as well do it the other way except then I'd have to wonder
which record belongs after marriage and which before and that gives me
one more thing to trip over on my way to finding it.

I don't think it really matters. It's your filing system and as long as
you're consistent with your 'rules', then you know where to find things.

Documents for unmarried children are filed with their parents.

Because I digitize everything I rarely reference my paper files. I also
annotate all records with keywords (people's names), locations, etc., so
I can pull all records for anyone from everywhere through a simple
search. Consequently it wouldn't matter if I threw all files in one huge
folder or anywhere at random. Except for other reasons I have for not
doing it that way.

RE: [LegacyUG] Paper filing question (by family)

2012-09-11 Thread Richard and Evita Piepho

For a daughter--yes
For a son--I would follow same as for a daughter as you listed
but remember everyone has a different way of filing and depends on the how you
are developing the tree therefore there isn't a correct way of filing. You do
what is comfortable to you...if you have Legacy use it to help you remember.
you will get other ideas so remember to look at them and then morph from that
for you own private filing system
I add a note in Legacy where I put the document in the place the information
was applied... example - birth certificate will place note in the note box of
the birth, death certificate, obituary or funeral card note in the note box of
the death, ect.
I also have an encyclopedia with every surname in the tree with a comment how
that name entered the tree and details where to find the material for you see I
have over 20,000 names and sometimes difficult to remember every relationship
as my family arrived after the Indians signed the treaty giving up rights to
the land, and the family is related to every pioneer family in the county by
marriage or blood.

Then I file all her
papers for events after her marriage (including after her husband's death,
where applicable) in her marriage folder. I haven't run into a case in my
lineage where the widow has remarried, but I would put her papers, beginning
with that marriage record, in a new folder for the second marriage.
Or in their own folder?Follow-up questions:
Do you treat sons and daughters the same? Do you treat grown, unmarried

Jenny,

There is no difference between us. I was thinking mainly in terms of
transcribed data, but like yourself, if there is an image then, I agree, it is
my "view" which I use; often with a comment such as "Ancestry indexes the name
as x ", where it differs from my version.

I still put the Ancestry DB in the repository though.

In the case of records for which only a transcription is available to me
I would do as you do, but where there is an original image I record what
*I* see.

Very often I agree that the transcription accurately reflects what is in
the image, even though I know the image is wrong - as often happens with
a Census where we are looking at what is already a transcription of an
original (in the case of UK Censuses, anyway.) Sometimes it easier for
me to read what was actually written than it is for a transcriber who
may be working at speed in an alien language, because I know what I am

As I record the full reference in my Citationss people can always find
what I looked at (if it's still available somewhere) and make up their
own minds.

[LegacyUG] Wednesday's Webinar: What is a Reasonably Exhaustive Search?

2012-09-11 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
The first step of the Genealogical Proof Standard is to "complete a

why this is necessary, and how to conduct a search. A case study explores
how failing to identify all relevant records can lead to missing
information and forming inaccurate conclusions about your ancestors' lives.

I do not not disagree with you in absolute terms, but I do put (Ancestry,

U.S. Census are housed at the 'National Archives'. If HeritageQuest,
Ancestry are no longer around, how would one find the record. One needs
to enter where and how to drive a person to the actual source.
Ancestry, are just tools to make it easier to find and view such
records.

Difficult to described, it is a marriage which is in your files but which
does not exist. It can, for example, arise when when a partner is added with
the intention of replacing, say, an unknown. Instead a second partner is
added so that there is now two marriages instead of one – just the sort of
thing which can arise when adding a step mother :-).

On a different point, whenever a new person is added, before running the RC
Tools>Set Relationships should be run.

Repository is not (HeritageQuest, Ancestry or whatever)

U.S. Census are housed at the 'National Archives'. If HeritageQuest,
Ancestry are no longer around, how would one find the record. One needs
to enter where and how to drive a person to the actual source.
Ancestry, are just tools to make it easier to find and view such
records.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to lump census records

2012-09-11 Thread Pat Hickin
I don't use SourceWriter for censuses.

I'm very much a splitter. My Source List Name reads, e.g.:

Year US State County - township/PO - repository (HeritageQuest, Anc or
whatever)
1860 US Census-IL-Jackson Co.-Carbondale PO-HerQu

For the Title, I simply copy and paste the Source List Name.

In the space for Publication Facts, I put series, roll#, url.

For Repository, it's HeritageQuestOnline, Ancestry or whatever

In the Detail, I put
page #, Line #s, house#, family#: head of household, street address
e.g.:
p127A, lines 9-17, House 236, Fam 240: James M. Jackson h'hold, 324 Vine St.

(That way, I can use the same detail for every member of the household.)

Another advantage is that when I need to add a census I don't already have,
I just choose one from the Master Source List that is most closely similar
to the one I want to add, edit it and save the edited version as a new
source.

Anything to avoid typing & save time!!

Hi, Listers,

I probably shouldn’t be spending my time or yours telling you about this --
it’s just a

minor warning! But you may want to know that tho’ the Relationship Calculator
is a great tool, it’s not perfect!

I recently used the Relationship Calculator (RC) to see how I was related to
“X”(b1809-d1884). The RC told me we were not related, that “X” was my “3rd
great-grandfather's wife's step nephew.”

But since his grandmother was the sister of my 5x ggf, I knew we were related.

So I used the RC in steps:

1) to get “X” ‘s relationship to my 4x ggf (result: 1stCousin,1x removed),

2) to get “X” ‘s relationship to my 2xggm (result: 2C), and

3) to get “X” ‘s relationship to me (new result: 2C,4r).

Actually it said “X” & I have “3 common ancestors”:

1) FNU McC__ & (wife) -- (result: 2C,4r)

2) FNU McC__ & (wife) -- (result: 2C,5r)

Note that 1) & 2) are the same as I’m descended from
two different sons -- lots of cousinly intermarriages)

3) “Not Related” - The Descriptive Link says he’s my “3rd great-grandfather's
wife's step nephew.”

I think on the first try, the RC is supposed to come up with the closest link
--not the most remote!!
