Re: [LegacyUG] Numbers appearing on Descendant Report

2013-09-27 Thread Shirley Richardson
Paula, you could well be correct. I googled one of the reference numbers and
was directed to a person's genealogy record created by Family Tree Maker - no
connection at all to my family as far as I know. All my ancestors are English
and this record is USA.

I have been researching recently via Ancestry.com so perhaps this has something
to do with it. It is the first time I have used it.

I suppose I could delete the references from the Notes. But I wonder how my
Legacy Files could be accessed?

Thanks Paula, no I haven't imported any data.
I could delete them individually if necessary but am curious how they got
there and will it occur again.

Shirley, These looks suspiciously like tags for GEDCOM files. Did you
import data from another application? It may be that something came into
Legacy & it didn't know where to put it, so to speak, so it recorded these
really cryptic things in the Notes fields. Just a wild guess on my part.

After running Check/Repair the following examples are appearing on the
Descendant report for some records only.

DEATH:RIN MH:1F269
RESI:RIN MH:IF292
DSCR:RIN MH:IF260
and also MARR:RIN MH:FF2

Upon investigation I find they are arbitrarily recorded in the General or
Marriage notes.

1. What are these numbers?

2. Why would it only apply to some records and not others?

3. How can I remove them from the Reports/Notes?

Many thanks

[LegacyUG] Is this a bug?

2013-09-27 Thread Tony Rolfe
I recently tried to recreate my web site via the Internet > Create Web
Pages... option.

On the Links tab is the option to "Include a custom HTML footer on each
page (inserted before the end tag)".

I expected that HTML entered here would appear either immediately above
or immediately below the line which reads "This Web Site was Created 1
Jun 2013 with Legacy 7.5 from Millennia", currently right at the bottom
of each page.

However, it appeared immediately above the horizontal line which
terminates the list of sources. In other words, I get a horizontal
line, then all the sources one after the other, then my custom HTML,
then a horizontal line, then some navigation options (home, table of
contents, surname list, name list) then the "This web site etc."

I am using the pedigree style page for all people in the family file. I
didn't put any HTML tags into the custom footer. Just plain text.

Cheers

Tony

Right - that's why it would be great if Legacy just included them in the
notes and not as a line item. Then people would get the actually family
history.

If I run it for my great-grandfather (instead of great-grandmother), I get him
and his wife (my great-grandmother), but I do not see my great-grandmother's
first husband nor children by him.  Is that what you are wanting to include?  I
can see why Legacy would not include people who are not descendants of the
person in a descendant report.  I mean, if the person in the direct line is the
one who married more than once, then the other children ARE descendants.
Hmm... a pickle for sure.

Paula,
Have you tried it with someone in your direct line whose spouse was married
more than one times? Example - if your great-grandmother spouse was married to
someone else - does his other wife show up in the descendant book form? I've
tried & tried it. Even deleted the legacy file support said a few years ago to
do (I think it was anc.usr but can't remember right now ... will have to try to
find this archived answer again) and it still won't print the other spouses.
Even though I've checked this feature. This is really frustrating for me
because I'm trying to send a pdf file to my relatives to share information.
I've asked them to email me if they know anything on the family other than what
I'm sending and, of course I get the information I already have.

Are you running the latest version?  7.5.0.270  (August 20th)

I understand completely about not resetting report options.  I think that's not
a good "solution" to any problem.

Does this happen no matter what type of output you are generating?  For
example, the HTML output doesn't appear to use the font size parameter when I
test that.  The PDF did use the font size setting.  It worked for the .BMP
output, too.  I don't see an RTF option for the Individual Report.

I have exhausted my ideas.  I hope someone else chimes in for you.

Paula, thank you so much for responding!  This has been going on for while
now, so I have exited Legacy many times.  I really don't want to reset all of
the report parameters because I've finally got everything the way I want it.
Except for the size of font for the source citations!  I did try the reset on
the fonts tab of report options, but it didn't help.  Thank you for trying.

Do be aware that they will not necessarily be listed in chronological order
within the particular event name!

That is a real bummer that I hope version 8 will fix!

The original post was not shown in Brian's reply. That would have been helpful.

Re: [LegacyUG] other spouses

2013-09-27 Thread Kathleen Townsley
Paula,
Have you tried it with someone in your direct line whose spouse was married
more than one times? Example - if your great-grandmother spouse was married
to someone else - does his other wife show up in the descendant book form?
I've tried & tried it. Even deleted the legacy file support said a few
years ago to do (I think it was anc.usr but can't remember right now ...
will have to try to find this archived answer again) and it still won't
print the other spouses. Even though I've checked this feature. This is
really frustrating for me because I'm trying to send a pdf file to my
relatives to share information. I've asked them to email me if they know
anything on the family other than what I'm sending and, of course I get the
information I already have.

RE: [LegacyUG] Individual Report

2013-09-27 Thread CE WOOD
Do be aware that they will not necessarily be listed in chronological order
within the particular event name!

That is a real bummer that I hope version 8 will fix!

The original post was not shown in Brian's reply. That would have been helpful.

Re: [LegacyUG] Font size for sources

2013-09-27 Thread Barbara
Paula, thank you so much for responding! This has been going on for
while now, so I have exited Legacy many times. I really don't want to
reset all of the report parameters because I've finally got everything
the way I want it. Except for the size of font for the source
citations! I did try the reset on the fonts tab of report options, but
it didn't help. Thank you for trying.

Shirley, These looks suspiciously like tags for GEDCOM files. Did you import
data from another application? It may be that something came into Legacy & it
didn't know where to put it, so to speak, so it recorded these really cryptic

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing UK census using basic sourcing

2013-09-27 Thread Paula Ryburn
Jennifer,
The one thing I have done that I did not see the others mention is add the
phrase "access through participating libraries" - which I believe I first saw
in Evidence Explained.  For example, for a while I was getting my census images
through HeritageQuest, via the Houston Public Library, so a citation looks like
this:

1880 U.S. census, Cook, Illinois, population schedule, Chicago (10th ward),
enumeration district (ED) 103, p. 499-D (stamped), dwelling 432, family 659,
Ellis, Charles J household; digital images, HeritageQuest Online (access
through participating libraries : accessed Feb 8, 2012); citing National
Archives and Records Administration microfilm T9, roll 192.

Admittedly, that is a SourceWriter source, but you can see where the "access
through participating libraries" fits in.  Hope this helps rather than muddies!
In other citations, using Basic sources, I have had to settle for a comma
before the "accessed " part.  But that seemed a fit price to pay to avoid
having to sort through the myriad "internet" or "online" versions of Source
Writer templates--it all became too much.

Re: [LegacyUG] Census Events-Marriage or Head of Houdehold

2013-09-27 Thread Paula Ryburn
Shirley,
I do enter the Census as a marriage event when the couple is married & appear
together.  However, I also enter the Census event for each child enumerated,
which I think covers some of the instances Jenny describes.  Further, I do not
enter the way Geoff teaches in the Legacy training.  I like to have more
descriptive Notes on the event.  And that would be where I would note "Their
youngest two children were staying with her parents in London, so were not
enumerated here." -- and enter the London census event on each of the 2
children.

For an individual, then, they will have 2-3 census events themselves, then
maybe several with their spouse, then maybe a few as a widow/widower.  I tend
to research a couple or family, rather than an individual.  It works for me for
now.

Oh, I get it.  But that reminds me:  I had once reported a "phantom" source
citation.  For a master source, the Show List option showed it being used by
one individual, but when I looked at the sources for that individual, it was
NOT being used.  However, it WAS being used on a To-Do item for that person.

All that to say, perhaps your image is linked to a source (master or detail)

It's these links I need to remove, not the ones to files that have just moved

Re: [LegacyUG] elimination of widows and orphans in printing reports

2013-09-27 Thread Paula Ryburn
Judy,  Thx for a chuckle today:  I opened this email wondering why you would
want your widows and orphans removed from reports... haha!  It was after
reading that one thread about removing husband #1 and wife #2, so my mind was
completely distracted.  ;)

On a more serious note, I think they do have a bit of widow/orphan logic in the
FGR, but not so much in the book reports.  Yes, it would be nice.  Tedious
coding, but surely not even hard (she types as a semi-retired programmer).

How can I eliminate the printing of widows and orphans (only one line of print
at the bottom of a page and only one line or one partial line of print at the
top of the next page) in book reports and narrative reports?

Re: FW: [LegacyUG] print other spouse also in Descendants book

2013-09-27 Thread Paula Ryburn
Judy, You might want to play around with this a bit in the sample database
before you make this sort of change for a whole family.  Look into what you use
"relationship to father" and "relationship to mother" for now, and will adding
the new "step" relationship affect that?  What do you want to see printed on
reports, etc.  If you want to see "adopted" on some children elsewhere in the
report but don't want to see "step" printed for these children, you will have a
dilemma, e.g.

Try running the report for the woman first to see if you get all the
information you want.  Or is this family in the middle of a line?

Judy,
First, connect the children to the step parents in addition to the biological
parents then set the Relationship to Father and Relationship to Mother as
"Step" for that family.  You may have to add that Status.  Then the reports
should work as you expected.

Yes, he is the children's step-father. There was not any adoption.

What you want is not possible in Legacy without distorting the biological
links. Those children are not biological descendants of the starting person so
they cannot be included in a Descendant Report for him/her.

You could link those children of the other spouse to the person who is a direct
descendant and then they will appear but with your explanation I am not sure
which "family" they should be linked to as children. Once they are linked to
the descendant person you can change the parent child relationship (is the
descendant a step parent? did they adopt the
children?) to clarify why they are "children".

Re: [LegacyUG] Font size for sources

2013-09-27 Thread Paula Ryburn
Barbara,
In another post here I was reminded there is an "Individual Report" separate
from the FGR.  I just tested increasing the font size for source citations in
the Individual Report, and it worked for me.  I know that doesn't help you
much.  Have you tried exiting Legacy and running Legacy again?  I think one of
the things they say here on the LUG to try is "reset all report parameters" --
which sounds drastic to me, but it is their go to solution in cases like you're
describing.

Maybe I should rephrase this question.  Is it a bug that the font size

source font size is increased, or is there another option I need to
click somewhere else to make this happen?

I had added this query to someone else's question and should have composed a
new question.

What is included if you check "other spouses" for your descendant book report?
If I have a person who married someone that had already been married twice
before shouldn't this show up - not as a separate line item for the husbands
but at least where it's showing in the note form who he married and her
parents, birth & death information. It would be nice to also have the children
from other marriages listed under this note section. I don't want a separate
line item for either one of these options.

If this isn't included,  will Legacy ever have this as a feature? If not, why
is that an option for the book? I have thousands & thousands of people and
hundreds who have multiple marriages so it isn't feasible to print out a family
report for each one to show this information to family members or to go in and
make the children stepchildren.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

thanks
Kathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Media

Thanks Paula, I've done that already. The problem is that in searching through
trying to locate each missing file I have come across an apparent link to a
fact that doesn't even exist.
It's these links I need to remove, not the ones to files that have just moved
or been renamed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Media

2013-09-27 Thread Paula Ryburn
Kathy,  It looks like your thread was hijacked without you receiving an answer.

Try Options > Customize > Locations tab > Test all media folders
UNCHECK make a list of all missing media files
Click "Proceed"
As each of your "missing" files pops up, I believe what you want to click is
"Remove Lost Picture"
THAT IS, I believe this removes the LINK to the lost picture/file.

HOWEVER, the HELP doesn't explain what this button does.  ?!  Hopefully, that
will be fixed in v8--I mean, I hope v8 Help matches v8 software.  I digress.

You can always do this for one of the files (all 4-5 times it appears) and run
it again to see that the app is no longer looking for the missing picture/file.

Thing is, I don't want to necessarily find the missing media
If it was just that some files have had their location changed, that would be
easy enough for Legacy to find, and the ones that have had their file name
changed can be done manually quite easily.

But there are the files that somehow appear to be attached to 5 different
places within the one person or family yet I can only find some of those
attachment points.

I want to be able to unlink any that I can not find the attachment point for.

You may want to wait till Legacy 8 becomes available.  It should be able to

Open the person for Edit
Click the Options and select Sort Events by Name.
Create your individual report and all the same name events will be together.

[LegacyUG] Individual Report

2013-09-27 Thread Ray Rhoads
Is there any way to produce an individual report that mirrors the listing in
nFS, in other words all similar events are listed together. All Census events
would be together, all residences together etc. If not is there any chance this
would be included in V8.

[LegacyUG] other spouses

2013-09-27 Thread Kathleen Townsley
I had added this query to someone else's question and should have composed
a new question.

What is included if you check "other spouses" for your descendant book
report? If I have a person who married someone that had already been
married twice before shouldn't this show up - not as a separate line item
for the husbands but at least where it's showing in the note form who he
married and her parents, birth & death information. It would be nice to
also have the children from other marriages listed under this note section.
I don't want a separate line item for either one of these options.

If this isn't included, will Legacy ever have this as a feature? If not,
why is that an option for the book? I have thousands & thousands of
people and hundreds who have multiple marriages so it isn't feasible to
print out a family report for each one to show this information to family
members or to go in and make the children stepchildren.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

thanks
Kathy

[LegacyUG] Numbers appearing on Descendant Report

2013-09-27 Thread Shirley Richardson
After running Check/Repair the following examples are appearing on the
Descendant report for some records only.

DEATH:RIN MH:1F269
RESI:RIN MH:IF292
DSCR:RIN MH:IF260
and also MARR:RIN MH:FF2

Upon investigation I find they are arbitrarily recorded in the General or
Marriage notes.

1. What are these numbers?

2. Why would it only apply to some records and not others?

3. How can I remove them from the Reports/Notes?

Many thanks

Shirley
