When a child is highlighted in the scrolling grid of children, the text, whether
originally red for females or blue for males, changes colour to white. This is
very easy to see against a blue background. Using the default(?) 'Windows 7

Explicitly - I have a lot of Danish ancestors.
Therefore I use the Denmark country abbreviation DK (big D, big K).
Legacy changes it to Dk (big D, little k) - without asking.

While USA is spelled USA, DK is spelled Dk (big D, little k).
Since I have a lot of Danish ancestors, I use DK (big D, big K) a lot.

Re: [LegacyUG] Lack of Trust

2013-12-17 Thread Cathy Pinner
Jim,

This doesn't make a lot of sense.

Are you saying you install Legacy and don't choose the language
version before opening your data?

Changing language for your data file even if just from English US to
English Australia is enough to lose your own sentence definitions and
revert to the default - and I think something may have been done
about that in 8 - I know there was a discussion at some point.

But what spelling is being changed in your own data?

Is it that you haven't set the same fonts in the new installation?
Sounds like characters are mapping to a different one and I think
that could happen if you were using a different character set.

That's the only thing I can think of that would change the
"spellling" of something you've entered.

Cathy

[LegacyUG] Lack of Trust

2013-12-17 Thread Karen and Jim
Hey,

In the past (and I'm still using v.5)
when I shift to another computer,
install Legacy and my data,
Legacy makes spelling changes
without asking me first.

I think this was a very bad policy.
And it caused me several hours
to change things back to original.
I know I can change this default
setting before I install my data.
But during install Legacy doesn't ask
if I want to keep my data the way I wrote it.
And I forget Legacy thinks it knows better
how I want certain foreign words spelled.
Later after installing my data, I discover ...
!@#$%^&

Legacy should trust us.
Legacy should have the courtesy to ask
if we want any changes. That should
be the default in my opinion.
Legacy should trust us first.

Has this spelling default been changed in versions
later than v.5? If so, I may buy the newer version
even if it is fatter and slower.

I've used several genealogy programs
starting with Roots II back in the 1980s.
Legacy has been the best. I even suffer
Windoz $#!+ so I can use Legacy.

I'm sorry you had this problem. This is a good time to remind folks:
NEVER test software on data that isn't backed up. Any software can
accidentally delete or corrupte your data.

[LegacyUG] A problem with shared events?

2013-12-17 Thread David Newton
I have raised a ticket about this with Legacy but that was 9 days ago
and I have had no response. Does anybody else have the same problem?

The problem is this: I share a census event where the owner - head of
household - and one of his sons have the same name. When I do an
individual or family group sheet with the option to include event
sharers set, then in the Owner's shared list the son of the same name is
missing. All others who share the event include the full list. If I
change the son's name, for example, by adding Jr so that he does not
have the same name, then he shows up in the list.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sort by RIN vs Sort by User ID

2013-12-17 Thread Ron Ferguson
Kurt,

I’m trying to go too fast before going on hols.!

My point was that the 3 boxes can actually be used for anything the user likes,
hence AFN can be used for Ahnentafel numbers. I do not know how the field sorts
since I have never wanted to use it.

Yes, I know of the AFN field. AFN stands for Ancestral File Number and its
primary use is intended as a link to the Ancestral File which was a predecessor
to Family Search Family Tree. As such I believe it is also an alpha-numeric
field and would still be using a character sort. A dedicated Ahnentafel field
would be a strictly numeric field.

There already is an option for a separate AFN on the Individual’s Information

I looked at this on the Index Tab with the User ID column added and set as the
sort/search option.

The sort being applied to the User ID field is a character sort rather than a
numeric sort. So the order will be 1, 10, … 19, 100, … 199, 1000, … 1999,
until all the first digit 1’s are exhausted, then 2, 20 ..29, 200 … 299, etc

As it is currently programmed, you would need to put leading zeros on your
ahnentafel numbers to get them to sort as you want. Probably not an easy task
if you have a lot of them and/or a deep tree. (ie, 1 might need to be
01) Probably easiest to just understand how the sort is working.

A suggested enhancement for the program would be to have an option for a
numeric sort on User ID. Would be a bit tricky if there were some non-numeric
values in the field. Might be easier to have a separate Ahnentafel field and a
Set Ahnentafel function (similar to Set Relations and Set Direct Line Preferred
and Set Ancestor Colors).

So I have two questions:

For those who use the User ID - do you predominantly use numbers or letters or
a combination of both

For the developers - how is the User ID field sorted please?

[LegacyUG] Run time error 6

2013-12-17 Thread Carl Cox
I am looking at a database I have not used for quite a while. When I start
going down the pedigree, I get a Run Time Error 6, overflow. Evidently that
error happens when creating reports, but I am just looking at the data. I
suspect that there is a bad link somewhere, but every time I try to look for
it I get the error and Legacy closes. I looked at the help screen, which
talks about making web pages, which I am not doing. I followed the steps Jim
Terry suggested, but no change, running file maintenance > check repair. If
I could get it to quite disappearing, I could find the bad link and correct
it. Any suggestions?

Just wondering, when I sort by RIN, the RIN numbers are in numerical order -
which is good.

However, when I sort by User ID, the numbers I have entered are Not in
numerical order, and so my names are not sorted at all really, they are simply
collected together.

I am using my User ID field to record the appropriate Ahnentafel number of each
of my direct line

So I have two questions:

For those who use the User ID - do you predominantly use numbers or letters or
a combination of both

For the developers - how is the User ID field sorted please?

Thanks

OK the situation seems to be that any media linked to a person, event, master
source or source citation is recognized by Media Center in its picture list by
the + sign in the U column.

For anything other than 'source' media the Media center can also cycle through
the individuals linked to the media, via the Next/Prev arrows in the right hand
column on the Picture List tab.

However, individuals indirectly connected via a source cannot be found via the
Picture List tab even though the media shows as linked.

It is so close!!

RE: [LegacyUG] Search information in Notes

2013-12-17 Thread Kurt Kneeland
You can use Search -> Find

In the Where to Search you can select any one of the note fields

Under How to Look, select Contains

Under What to Look For enter your search string

I don’t think it will take it in the form you showed. If you just enter it as
Grange Farm, it will look for that phrase.

If you want it to look for Grange and Farm as separate words, you’ll need look
just for Grange, click the And option and set up the second condition to look
for Farm.

Otherwise, you can use the 2nd and 3rd conditions, with the Or option, to
search up to 3 different Note fields at one time.

On the Where to Look list, most of the Note fields are grouped together, but
the one for Event-Notes which applies to custom events, is listed separately
further down on the list.

[LegacyUG] Legacy v8 - Highlighted colour

2013-12-17 Thread 2marion wimps
I have hunted high and low for this but have to admit I am stumped.

Under the Family View the children are fine (viewed in the Scrolling
List) - but the highlight on the first child is blue and makes reading the
text underneath difficult - especially if the child is a female and the
text is red for female.

I have made several alterations but still cannot find anything to change
this colour - does anyone else have this colour or managed to change it?
Please

Marion

This topic probably will be covered in due course, but I don't think the
videos for Legacy 8 are ready yet.

If you open Help, you will see "Tutorial" on the right-hand side. Click
"Tutorial Lessons" and scroll down to the exercise "How to search for
individuals" under the Intermediate heading.

Re: [LegacyUG] Linking media to source citations

2013-12-17 Thread David Newton
OK the situation seems to be that any media linked to a person, event,
master source or source citation is recognized by Media Center in its
picture list by the + sign in the U column.

For anything other than 'source' media the Media center can also cycle
through the individuals linked to the media, via the Next/Prev arrows in
the right hand column on the Picture List tab.

However, individuals indirectly connected via a source cannot be found
via the Picture List tab even though the media shows as linked.

It is so close!!

RE: [LegacyUG] Search information in Notes

2013-12-17 Thread Mike Forryan
Hi Jenny
Thanks for your help and guidance. I now understand that there is no global
search facility across all database fields.
Can you give me some guidance as to how to search the notes fields please. Is
there a video guide on this?
I have looked at the search facilities but cannot see how to do the search.
Thanks

I'm a bit confused because your subject is "Search information in Notes"
and then you say "a global search on all data". Do you mean that "Grange Farm"
might be within any of the 6 Notes fields?

Unfortunately, Legacy can only search on 3 criteria at a time so to cover all
the Notes fields you would need to Search twice.

There isn't a global Search which searches every field in the database.

Re: [LegacyUG] potential problem alerts

2013-12-17 Thread Boyd Miller
The next step, when you have got the names to Initial caps is to set ALL
the data format options to "Don't change what I enter".

This keeps the correct case for O’Brien, McKenzie, le Moignan, St
Helier, LaPort, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Barton in the Beans, and
Borris-in-Ossory.

If you want to show uppercase surnames on the family screen, then in
Data Format > 3.4 Displaying Surnames, tick “Show SURNAMES in uppercase
letters”. Similarly, in reports go to Report Options > Format >
Uppercase SURNAMES.

Re: [LegacyUG] Font size on Pedigree report

2013-12-17 Thread Boyd Miller
Kathy,
I have reset to the default fonts which should have all the data in
10pt. I'm using short locationsand the amount of data doesn't seem to
be the issue.

The first generation with 8 lines is a smaller font than 2nd, 3rd and
4th which have 7/6 lines of data. But then 5th gen with only 4/3 lines
and 6th with only name and birth date, and plenty of space, have gone
back to a font even smaller than the first generation.

In V7.5 all data is the same font. Either way, with my pattern of
variations or with yours, something is definitely wrong in Version 8.
There is also the problem of the names running into the line under.
Does anybody have another take on this issue?

Is there a way to do a global search on all data with "Grange+Farm" as a
search criteria?

Any help would be appreciated

Re: [LegacyUG] Sort by RIN vs Sort by User ID

2013-12-17 Thread David Newton
I use the UserID as a two letter alphabetic code which identified the
root of the particular subtree followed by a modified Dollarhide number
within the subtree. The sorting seems to be standard alphanumeric
ignoring the fact that part of it is a number, so for example DN1024.0
will come before DN2.0

I did briefly experiment with filling out the numeric part with leading
zeroes but gave up when I realized that (a) it looks ridiculous and,
more importantly, (b) it means I have to decide on an upper limit on the
number of individuals in advance.

[LegacyUG] Sort by RIN vs Sort by User ID

2013-12-17 Thread Kathy Thompson
Just wondering, when I sort by RIN, the RIN numbers are in numerical order
- which is good.
However, when I sort by User ID, the numbers I have entered are Not in
numerical order, and so my names are not sorted at all really, they are
simply collected together.
I am using my User ID field to record the appropriate Ahnentafel number of
each of my direct line

So I have two questions:

For those who use the User ID - do you predominantly use numbers or letters
or a combination of both

For the developers - how is the User ID field sorted please?

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problems: Surname all Uppercase

I'm having the same problem. I emailed support and they said it was a bug,
but no fix as yet in the last few updates. Guess they're flat out. I
stopped fixing them as I couldn't see a way to do it globally. I might try
the first letter caps, that someone suggested and see if that works.

Re: [LegacyUG] Font size on Pedigree report

2013-12-17 Thread Kathy Thompson
I have almost the opposite issue.

My first, second, third, and fourth generations are smaller while
generations 5 & 6 are larger

I take this to be that in gens 1-4 it is trying to include all relevant
data while in gen 5 it includes only name & birthdate and in gen 6 it is
name only, no dates at all.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Current age if Alive

2013-12-17 Thread Kathy Thompson
Thank you Brian, I will suggest it as a possible new feature.
Thanks Kurt, it is a good suggestion and does have its very valuable place,
but it requires an extra couple of clicks and keypresses when at this point
all I am looking for is a quick visual of how many years since the birth of
someone
