[LegacyUG] Missing Captions in Legacy 8 (imported from FTM 2014)

2014-01-14 Thread Diane Marcotte
Hello.

My Legacy 8 found and linked to the images in the GEDCOM file I imported
from FTM 2014. But only some of them have captions!

The images will a filename such as 023567890.jpg or Media 0152 came
across with their respective captions such as 1901 Canada Census - George
Martin and Will and Ethel Potter. But images with filenames like William
Potter 1926 that also has a caption in FTM William Potter 1926 came
across to Legacy 8 will no caption. I'm at a loss to explain why some do and
others don't have a caption. When I go to a person's Media file in FTM the
caption's are all there. When I go to the same person in Legacy 8 only some
captions are there.

Does anyone know what I can do to have the captions dhow in Legacy 8? If
not it looks like I will have to open both programs and copy from FTM and
paste into Legacy - a job I would like to omit if possible as I think I
have a good 1500 to 2000 images without captions.

Thanks!

Diane

There are Captions. And then there are Captions. Some are attached to the actual

In 8, the buttons, now called Indiv Chart and Family Group pause at Select

Can anyone help? I've hunted the Help files without success. I do hope this

Re: [LegacyUG] Land records and Legacy 8

2014-01-14 Thread circe
Do these land records work as shown at http://tinyurl.com/lrzcvcr for
Canada? Seems to me there are far easier ways of obtaining records for
some provinces even if the LDS offers them.

I enter them as an event entitled Land Ownership and attach the original
copied documents in the Pictures area. I've found so many errors at
Family Search and a stonewall attitude when pointed out to them that
they're almost a waste of time except for official records. Even then,
I'd prefer to find the record on Ancestry, if possible, so I can have a
copy of the original document.

Re: [LegacyUG] Shared Events - is this a known bug

2014-01-14 Thread Brian/Support
Jenny,

Make a report for the person/family which contains both the main person
and someone who shares the event and see what appears there before
submitting your problem report. From your explanation it may be that
what you are calling an error is only the sentence preview at the bottom
of the screen which in Legacy 8 for shared events is NOT taken from your
actual entry. The notes portion is only a placeholder representation of
where your note will be in the sentence.

If there is a problem you are going to have to submit it to
supp...@legacyfamilytree.com. Include screen shots of what you are
seeing and where.

No, it replaces the Event Notes I entered in the Event Notes field on
the main Edit Event screen for the sharer of the Event, and also appears
on the Edit the role of ... screen for the sharee. On the latter
screen, you get Shared Event/Fact, Description, Date, Place Notes at the

With that tick box selected, the words These are the Event Notes
 appear in both places.

[LegacyUG] What's In This Update File

I've seen this response to several problems that have been reported and the
fact that the remote support personnel are being told what's included in the
next patch is the very thing that I asked about two weeks ago. That idea didn't
seem to go over very well with Millennia support claiming it would be too much
of a requirement to take the programmers off task yet it appears that such a
text file of What's In This Update does exist. Why can't the users see the
planned upcoming fixes then so they won't have to report on problems already

The fixes pending in a new release is part of our bug tracking/reporting
and we do NOT advertise that list. It changes as bugs are reported
fixed, tested and bug reports are closed or reopened if the testing
fails so it is a moving target. It is also not a text file it is a web
site where the status of individual issues are recorded. I can say the
issue in this case is in the next release from the status of that one issue.

You can see what is included when a new release is issued here:

Re: [LegacyUG] Land records and Legacy 8

2014-01-14 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Helen,

It's not really the geography that matters in this post, it is the methods
of analyzing and entering them into Legacy, and the subsequent updated
chronology that is important in this post. The concepts and methodology
would apply to any country.

[LegacyUG] Legacy interface to Family Search: 2 potential Problems/bugs

2014-01-14 Thread Bryan Pratt

When I am in the Possible Match tab window the (I) icons on the Family Search
pane are there but not available. It makes it difficult to accurately determine
whether the individual is a match or not because you cannot get any detail.

When in the Possible Duiplicates tab window, the (I) column disappears behind
the vertical scroll bar. You can grab the column and resize it to show, but
when you move on to the next or other individuals, the column disappears again.
It appears random - sometimes the column remains for following individuals.
Normally one would be able to save the layout so the column always shows, a la
Excel or Access.

Using Win 8.1 on a 14 inch screen laptop.

I'm not seeing this at all.

In v7.5, click on Reports Report Menu (I don't have the icon showing)
  Individual tab

Next I'm shown the Select a Report window, with various buttons for
report options, preview, print, etc.

At no stage do I see anything like a generated report, until I click on
the Preview button.

Am I missing something (maybe not understanding the problem at all?), or
are we seeing different actions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Chronology Tab screen display.

2014-01-14 Thread Boyd Miller
Wendy,
The List style is fine but in my Report stye the font is much smaller
than yours - it takes about 40 lines of text to fill the screen, and I
can't find anywhere to change the size (other than CTRL-mouse roller,
and that doesn't stick). In the List style it takes only takes about 21
lines to fill the screen and the size is OK.

Screen fonts under Customise 10.1 and 10.2 don't seem to make any
difference.

I wonder why your report style is different? In L7.5 it was the same
small font on this screen, ant it seems well out of line with all the
other main screen fonts.

Re: [LegacyUG] Quick Viewing of some Reports

2014-01-14 Thread Boyd Miller
Wendy,

What Mary was talking about I think is in Legacy7.5, when you generate a
pedigree or descendant chart using the icons on the toolbar, there is a
brief flick through the Pedigree or Descendant Chart setup screen and
the the chart appears.

If you generate these charts in L7.5 by going through the reports menu
then your case occurs - you need to hit Preview to get the chart. The
toolbar icons she is using were probably not in the default setup but
she has added them from the icons available.

Pedigree and descendant charts initiated from toolbar icons in Legacy 8
take you through the same path as if you started from the Report Menu,
and you must hit Preview to see the chart. I prefer this new system
because in L7.5 I often had to go back and reset some of the setup
parameters and have a second go at the chart.

RE: [LegacyUG] Exporting a Legacy V7.5 file

2014-01-14 Thread Kurt Kneeland
You get that message if you have chosen a destination file that already exists.
You probably want to choose NO and go back and enter a different filename (or
you could use the same filename but in a different directory).

The only time you would choose YES would be if you had created a partial export
and then wanted to go back and add some additional different records to the
initial export.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legcy 8 - addresses

This is a bug that was identified about a week ago. If you are relying on
legacy to set the first characters to capitals and enter a location where one
part is an abbreviation that needs to be converted to all caps, then you get
the scrambled form that you are seeing. For now, either spell out united
states, or set your own capitalization. This should be fixed in the next
release.

redding, shasta, california, usa (I always
enter data in lower case and let legacy capitalise)

When I press the enter key this is what I get:

Redding, Sha USA California, Usa

Can anyone help. I assume there is a setting to fix this.

Regards

Ian Watkins

You get that message if you have chosen a destination file that already exists.
You probably want to choose NO and go back and enter a different filename (or
you could use the same filename but in a different directory).

The only time you would choose YES would be if you had created a partial export
and then wanted to go back and add some additional different records to the
initial export.

[LegacyUG] Shared event question

2014-01-14 Thread Tony Rolfe
I've just started to play with the shared events in V8 and have hit a
small snag.

Under V7.5, whenever I had a marriage certificate I would enter the
marriage details for the couple. Then I would add a marriage event
called Witnesses where I would list the witnesses names. If the
witnesses were in my tree I would add a Marriage Witness event to the
people concerned. This bit is easy to replace with the shared event.

I would also add an event to each of the couples fathers. This was an
occupation event and the sentence reads (in part) [OnDate] [Notes] said
he was a [Desc] So we might get On 16 Jun 1896 his son George's
marriage certificate said he was a labourer. This is the bit I can't
see how to replicate. I tried setting up a Groom's father role so I
could build the basic part of the sentence but I can't see how to get
the occupation into the shared event. Essentially, I need to add
information from the certificate which isn't in the base event. I'm
guessing that this is impossible, but I live in hope.

Advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

RE: [LegacyUG] Shared event question

2014-01-14 Thread Kurt Kneeland
I think you want to include the occupation statement in the Notes (specific to
this person's role).

Sentence structure could be something like [onDate] he was the [EventRole] at
the [Event] of [MainCouple]. [Notes].
The sentence would be something like On 16 June 1896 he was the Groom's
father at the marriage of George Smith and Sally Jones. The marriage
certificate listed his occupation as labourer.
