Re: [LegacyUG] navigating to associates

2014-09-22 Thread Sherry/Support
Sounds like that could be useful to do but sadly you can't do it in Legacy
at this time.

Please do submit a suggestion using the Suggestion form on our website
www.LegacyFamilyTree.com Help Center or the link in the Support section
of the Legacy Home tab.

Say I have an individual Census event that is shared with the members of

navigate from the owner of that Census event to the housekeeper or from
the housekeeper back to the male head of household? Or is the quickest
way to open up the Census event and the list of individuals it is shared
with, commit the name of the housekeeper to memory, close all the
windows, and then look for the housekeeper's name in the index?

 Thanks for any tips!

[LegacyUG] Location options?

[LegacyUG] Descendancy Report

2014-09-22 Thread Jeff
I am creating a descendancy Report in legacy 7.5 which I intend to
incorporate into a MS Word document and have 2 problems I need help with.

1. Because the report runs several pages, if an individual has a second
spouse that appears on a subsequent page of the report, the spouse's entry
appears as

NAME (see other spouse name on page #)

Because this report will be incorporated into a larger word document the
page # in
(see other spouse name on page #)
does not correspond to the page number in the Word document.

Is there an option to prevent legacy from including (see other spouse name
on page #) in the report?

2. The second problem is related.
Because the report is destined to be included in a much larger Word
document, and I don't own a pdf editor, is there some way to produce the
same report in editable form rather than pdf. So I can change some things
about it, including colored text to highlight the direct line?

No Digest! Never has been!

Digest users normally don't know how to use the digest properly when replying to

[LegacyUG] Formatting options in reports -- Are any of these possible?

2014-09-22 Thread Pat Hickin
The more I use Legacy, the more I realize what an amazingly complicated
program it is. I suppose I want it to be even *more* complicated!

Is there a way to do any of the following?

On a descendant narrative report there is a line between each event that I
would like to get rid of. Instead I would like a double space between
events. (Bullet-style- formatting)

And there is also a line under picture captions that I'd like to do away
with.

Also in the list of children, I'd like to have an empty line (*i.e*.,
double-space) between each child, but I see no way to do that.

And, I'd like an empty line (*i.e*., double-space) after the sentence that
says their children were:

As you know, German given names for boys were often Johannes Christian,
Johannes Adam, Johannes Ludwig, etc. Is there any way I can get Legacy
to either use the middle name or the full given name in narratives?

When the place of marriage is not given, Legacy inserts a blank line about
an inch or two long. I'd like not to have that line and don't know how to
get rid of it. I don't remember seeing it in the past.

On individual events, the formatting options of italics, bold, etc. work
fine in the notes field but don't affect the description, etc., fields.
Any way to change that?

Thanks,

You probably only think you want this. I assure you, those
double-spaces can more than double the size of your output.
I spent several labor-weeks deleting enough blank lines to
save 473 pages in one narrative.

Aside from that, there are drawbacks to the blank-lines.
They frequently cause the page to break oddly (whether
you're printing to paper, to pdf or to html). A badly placed
page break can change the reader's understanding of the
material presented. And, when you add in Events and blank
lines between those, you can produce a paper that has a Fog
index well post-graduate. Since most people aren't
post-grad, they are even more likely to misunderstand.

I've had the misfortune of having to unravel meaning from
some of these things, and it fails to raise the warm-fuzzies

Re: [LegacyUG] Formatting options in reports -- Are any of these possible?

2014-09-22 Thread Brian/Support
Use reset to set the report to defaults. There should not be a line
between events but Legacy is now incorrectly adding those if you run a
lined report first. The error is recorded in our problem reporting system.

To change report spacing select the page layout tab then click the
custom report spacing button. There are a number of line spacing options
there that may give you what you want.

The line for marriage is a new addition in response to a problem report.
It is a placeholder when a marriage has no data entered but does have a
source. We needed to insert something where we could include the source
citation. Before the recent update we were not including source
citations for marriages without data.

There is no option to change the way pictures are included so the line
under the caption cannot be removed.

Although you cannot use the format buttons to set the format in the
Event for the Event Name, Description, Dates or Places you can select
the text and use CTRL-i to set italics, CTRL-b for bold, CTRL-u for
underline and CTRL-s for superscript formats.

If you try to add those format codes to Event names, dates and places
though you will find that the event with format codes will become a new
Master Event Definition for each form of code/code combination and
places enclosed in format codes will also be new places in the Master
Location list. For Events you will then have to define your own event
sentence(s) for the new event definition. I did not test the impact of
format codes around dates and date checking for invalid dates in
Potential Problems. On the Chronology tab the event with a formatted
date does sort correctly so the date may be working as a good date.

I see two others have already replied re use of the quoted name to have
Legacy use a middle name or nickname in reports.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendancy Report

2014-09-22 Thread Brian/Support
There are three Legacy reports you could be referencing. The Descendant
Chart, Descendant Book and Descendant Narrative. The later two reports
have an option to be output as RTF files which can be imported into your
MS Word document, they include indexing and TOC codes which MS Word can
use to include proper Xref page numbers. I am not sure about the page #
reference on the spouse but I am sure you could change that page number
to an appropriate Xref within MS word. The Descendant Chart report
however only has a Text output so you would have to add your own Xref
markings after importing the text file into your MS Word document.

Re: [LegacyUG] Location options?

2014-09-22 Thread Brian/Support
One thing that can cause that option to fail is not using the four
levels with comma separations for missing levels form for locations. All
your locations have to be in the form city, county, state, country and
if one of the levels is missing you must still include the comma for
that level. city, , state, country for example. Address, city, county,
state, country will also cause a failure because there are five levels.

I for one dislike the comma routine. Not clean presentation. It's a little
extra effort but much prefer to enter the identity for a county, township,
parish than to show missing data by using commas. I can see what's missing. If
this causes extra effort because of software, so be it.

Re: [LegacyUG] digest mode option

2014-09-22 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Kathleen,

As has already been said, there is no digest option for this mailing list.

What you can do instead is manage your own incoming mail differently, so
it behaves in a way that suits your needs.

For all mailing lists I subscribe to (which is many, less than 100 but
probably a lot more than 20), I use a filter to pick out that list mail
and divert it from the Inbox. Some mailing lists (the busier ones) get
their own folder, others get lumped into one folder - but they're still
away from the Inbox.

I wrote some instructions many years ago and put them on a web page;
it's specifically for a different mailing list to this one, but is
quickly adapted to any mailing list by changing the email address used.
You'll find it at
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/How-to.htm#RuleFilter

... ah, and now that I take another look at that page, I see I haven't
included Thunderbird, which the headers of your post tell me you're
using (and I am, too). The path you need to take in Thunderbird is
Tools Message Filters.

Once you've set that filter, your LUG mail will be put into its own
folder (the one you specify in the filter) as it comes in, so it's kept
away from your Inbox. You'll be able to see at a glance when there's
new mail in it, and you can choose when to go and read it. Meanwhile, if
you need to concentrate on what's in your Inbox (or elsewhere) you can
do so without the LUG mail getting in the way.

Hope this helps. :-)

[LegacyUG] Repeating Source Pictures/Documents on Reports

2014-09-22 Thread gregandlaurel
Hi, I subscribed about a week ago, but I am not receiving any emails. I
see a question I posted shows on the usergroup and I was hoping someone

I just recently upgraded to Legacy 8 and I use the Basic System for sources.
I have a 2 part issue: firstly, does ibid not work? Under Customize
Legacy - Sources, Section 7.8 it says Use ibid for repeating Master Sources
(this only applies to Basic-Style sources). I have this ticked, but so far
this has failed to work on all types of reports. The 2nd part is that I
like to attach a jpg picture of documents to the Master Source. The
picture always appears twice on reports - once with the first Full Citation
and then again with the subsequent citation (hence my question about ibid).
Is there anyway to only have the picture appear with the first citation.
Twice is overkill. I have gone through and tried numerous things with
report options, but nothing works. My reports printed fine with the older
version of Legacy that I was previously using. Any advice would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Re: [LegacyUG] Repeating Source Pictures/Documents on Reports

2014-09-22 Thread Ward Walker
Gregandlaurel,

Not receiving list e-mails is a frequent problem, due to a flaw in the
service that Milllenia uses. You need to send an e-mail to
supp...@legacyfamilytree.com and ask them to fix your partially-working
subscription.

We had a big discussion here in 2009, where some people were bemoaning the
fact that ibid had stopped working in the then latest release. Some points:
  - ibid is only useful for a citation where the master source is identical
to the one in the immediately preceding citation. The way that reports are
constructed, we have little control over the order of citations in
footnotes.
  - Legacy uses the concept of 'subsequent citations', where an abbreviated
form of the master citation is used if that master was cited anywhere above
in the list of citations.
  - If both the master and detail information in a citation are identical to
a previous citation, then Legacy should simply use the same footnote number
in the report, rather than create a new footnote. It was not clear whether
this was always working.
  - Subsequent citations get very complicated when dealing with SourceWriter
sources. Bugs were logged. I haven't checked whether any work has been done
on those issues. Many e-mails in the LUG archive.

the exact Master Source before it -- with the same picture of the birth
certificate repeated. I could handle the repeating Source if the picture
didn't repeat. It just seems a whole big mess of citations compared to the
older version. Thanks again. Laurel

 - ibid is only useful for a citation where the master source is identical to
the one in the immediately preceding citation. The way that reports are
constructed, we have little control over the order of citations in footnotes.
 - Legacy uses the concept of 'subsequent citations', where an abbreviated
form of the master citation is used if that master was cited anywhere above
 in the list of citations.
 - If both the master and detail information in a citation are identical to a
previous citation, then Legacy should simply use the same footnote number in
the report, rather than create a new footnote. It was not clear whether this
 was always working.
 - Subsequent citations get very complicated when dealing with SourceWriter
sources. Bugs were logged. I haven't checked whether any work has been done
on those issues. Many e-mails in the LUG archive.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Repeating Source Pictures/Documents on Reports

Hi, I subscribed about a week ago, but I am not receiving any emails. I
see a question I posted shows on the usergroup and I was hoping someone
could help me with it. Here it is again:

I just recently upgraded to Legacy 8 and I use the Basic System for sources.
I have a 2 part issue: firstly, does ibid not work? Under Customize
Legacy - Sources, Section 7.8 it says Use ibid for repeating Master Sources
(this only applies to Basic-Style sources). I have this ticked, but so far

So far as I can tell, no it isn't working. Never has for me.

this has failed to work on all types of reports. The 2nd part is that I
like to attach a jpg picture of documents to the Master Source. The
picture always appears twice on reports - once with the first Full Citation
and then again with the subsequent citation (hence my question about ibid).
Is there anyway to only have the picture appear with the first citation.

Again, not so far as I can tell. Another argument against
putting pictures with/in/on sources, I guess.

Twice is overkill. I have gone through and tried numerous things with
report options, but nothing works. My reports printed fine with the older
version of Legacy that I was previously using. Any advice would be
 appreciated. Thanks.

 Cheryl
