Have the fellow researcher send you a GEDCOM file of his data. Then you
can import that into Legacy.
If he has Legacy 8, then it would be better if he could send you a Legacy
file with the people you have in common - no import, you just do a merge of
the two databases.

A fellow researcher had some of my ancestors' info (documented), and sent
it to me via an .rtf file. How can I put that document into my Legacy (8.0)
family tree, so I don't have to enter all of that data manually? (It looks
just like the descendant list was made with the Legacy program.) If I have
to convert it into a GEDCOM file first, how do I do that?

I tried the Reset button but still have the same problem. I have been spending
a great deal of time playing with settings etc. but nothing seems to work.

Also, I still cannot find the “Change” button mentioned in the Help section-
maybe it would help.

John,

The options in Options > Customize > Master Report Fonts don't take effect
until you click on the Reset button in the Report Fonts window for each report.

That's not explained in the Help topic for Customize - Fonts. I'll ask the

1) Go to OPTIONS > CUSTOMIZE > DATA FORMAT. Scroll to Option 3.3 and make sure
it is set to UPPERCASE. Click the APPLY button over on the right to make sure
that ALL of your surnames are in uppercase. Close the customizations screens.

2) Now go to TOOLS > POTENTIAL PROBLEMS. Click the STANDARDIZATION tab. The
very last entry is SURNAME ENTERED AS ALL CAPS. Uncheck that box.

Now you are good to go.

Yes,
Go to Options - Customise 3.3
Choose Initial Caps and click the Apply button.
You may need to check the Master Surname List for surnames with prefixes and
edit them individually if necessary.

I upgraded from Legacy 7.5, and preferred the kind of data file storage that
v7.5 used, and so have me data in E:\Leg8Data, whereas my "My Documents"
folder is at G:\SteveDoc.

I did that because my C: drive was originally quite small, and though I
replaced it by a bigger drive, I kept that arrangement.

I don't have OneDrive, but I do have a GoogleDrive on my laptop, which does
not seem to be accessible by a drive letter path, so have not used it for
anything important. I once tried to copy my Legacy data files there as a kind
of backup, and found they had been deleted from their original location, so I
moved them back pretty quicky, and have not used the GoogleDrive for anything
since. Is OneDrive like that? Is it accessible by a drive letter path or not?

OneDrive indicates my free storage capacity is 15 GB. But if one were to click
on their link to add more storage, that page says that the current free plan is
5 GB. Maybe it’s the Win10 Pro version that gets 15 GB over the Home version.

2016-05-25 Thread Cathy Pinner

Brian,

That's very interesting information.
My Windows 10 is a clean install done in January and I haven't used One
Drive on it although I have 1 TB with Office 365.

I'm about to try it out again as I believe they've also changed their
defaults which drove me crazy before. The previous default was not to
have offline access to your files - and changing that gave me continual
sync problems.

With Win 10 I understand offline access is the default so I'll be
interested to see if I have the sync problems.

I'll also be interested to see whether it changes my default Documents
file from D:\Documents - and if it does, whether I can change it back.

Since many people's One Drive space is limited to 5GB, they must have
some way of not syncing folders in their One Drive folder to their cloud
if they're automatically putting the default Docs in it.

Re: [LegacyUG] File locations on new installs

2016-05-25 Thread Leon Chapman
Mary:

It is Microsoft standards for developers that programs be installed in the
C:\usr\Program Files area for a number of years / versions of Windows.
Legacy 7.5 installed in the C:\Legacy\ area and was counter to the
Microsoft standards. In certain cases, this lead to some problems.
As an example, many people just backup their "My Document" and "My
Pictures" folders for all of their data. Of course, you missed backing up
your Legacy data if your were running Legacy 7 & 7.5.

Legacy 8 has corrected this issue and now installs in the proper Microsoft
standard location. This simplifies backups and any confusion about where
the data and media files are kept -- it is always in Windows 10 "Documents"
folder. This was a necessary improvement for the Legacy Developers to keep
with the standards.

Hope this helps explain the differences.

Re: [LegacyUG] File locations on new installs

2016-05-25 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
My clean install was based on the most recent release of Win10 from less than
one month ago. Older versions of Windows 10 such as upgraded from Win7 or clean
installs from a few months ago will not be showing OneDrive in the Documents
path….just yet.

It’s amazing that we have to talk about “older versions of Windows 10” !!

Here is what MS says:

Thank you for contacting OneDrive Support. The path
C:\Users\Name\OneDrive\Documents is created by default and using a clean
install of Windows 10 because the file explorer system is intricately tied with
OneDrive. For personal home users of Windows 10 OneDrive is the file system
they would be using for their computer. I understand that it will require some
changes in file paths and in any guides that reference those file paths however
we did this to better incorporate file hosting and being able to access your
files from any device not just when you are at home or at work.

I'm puzzled - I just got a new laptop a couple of months ago with Windows 10 on

Same with the Windows 10 upgrade over Windows 7 on my desktop. Since I did the
Win10 upgrade, I installed a fresh copy of Legacy.

The default folders for Office 365 on the laptop (I got a free copy of it for a
year and had to install it myself) did go to the OneDrive folder, but not the
Legacy installs - and I have two different versions installed.

Legacy was installed after Office 365 on the laptop and after the OneDrive
folder was installed on the desktop.

OneDrive indicates my free storage capacity is 15 GB. But if one were to click
on their link to add more storage, that page says that the current free plan is
5 GB. Maybe it’s the Win10 Pro version that gets 15 GB over the Home version.

Re: [LegacyUG] File locations on new installs

2016-05-25 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
Yes, Mike, my wife's computer was upgraded from Win7 to Win10 just this
week, without her knowledge or permission. Just woke up one morning and the
computer screen says, "Hi. We updated your PC". Her Documents path remained
the same. But according to an email from Microsoft received this morning,
hers, yours, and everybody's will be changing soon... just when that will
happen is anyone's guess.

The bottom line is that is makes no difference to the user or to Legacy. And
you are not "forced" to actually upload and synch your documents with the
OneDrive in the cloud. Microsoft is merely making a uniform platform to
enable all users to utilize the cloud storage for file collaboration and
sharing if they so enable it. You have to remember that the OneDrive
Documents folder is merely a folder on your PC which is your default file
save location. The OneDrive in the cloud comes into play only if the user
specifically uploads his OneDrive folder to the OneDrive cloud storage.

So moving personal folders off the OneDrive folder on your PC does nothing
unless you actually use the OneDrive app. But you and I probably agree that
its good computing to move your personal data off the C:\ drive anyhow.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 and my Documents folder stayed exactly where
it has always been - on the C: drive. There has been no evidence of any move
towards using OneDrive.

Adice to new Win 10 users: BEFORE installing ANYTHING, Move the Personal

[LegacyUG] MS One Drive

2016-05-25 Thread Martha Graham

Good Morning,
When MS had to change from 'Sky Drive' to One Drive due to a legal
issue, they kept the 15 mb storage free - for a time.

Then on January 2016, they announced that 15mb would no longer be free
with signups. But, everyone who already had an account was grandfathered
in - if they said they wanted to continue to use it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OneDrive

So, the downsize from 15 to 5 has nothing to do with Win 10, it just
looks like it.

A lot of Cloud activity has changed and much of the free large offerings
have been curtailed. But it is still possible to use them if careful and
pay attention to the 'fine print',

My OneDrive was reduced to 5Gb some time ago.  It is still reading 15Gb,
because I qualified for a bonus of 10Gb while I sorted myself out.  I'm not

Legacy will use whatever path Windows says is the location of your My Documents

It is very interesting that New Windows 10 computers use One Drive in the

that Microsoft is going to reduce the allowed storage for One Drive in the near
future. Free accounts will only allow 5 GB of data, it was 15 GB. Amounts above

Legacy will use whatever path Windows says is the location of your My Documents
for the location of your Legacy Family Tree\_AppData folder.
The Legacy installer asks Windows where My docs in located then creates the
Legacy Family Tree folder in that location. On first start up of Legacy by a
new user on the system a similar process creates a new set of Legacy folders in
the new user's My Documents folder.

It is very interesting that New Windows 10 computers use One Drive in the
user's path, especially considering that I was recently advised by One Drive
that Microsoft is going to reduce the allowed storage for One Drive in the near
future. Free accounts will only allow 5 GB of data, it was 15 GB. Amounts above
5 GB must be paid for with a subscription or by paying for a Office 365 license.

In comparing my new computer against some other Windows 10 computers that were
UPGRADED instead of a CLEAN install, there is no OneDrive in the file path for
the Users\Documents on the UPGRADED systems.

What this means is that the old file path most of us are used to

“C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData” may now appear to
users doing a clean install as:

“C”\Users\YourName\OneDrive\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData”

What’s not yet clear to me if it’s the installation of Microsoft Office on my

installation doing a CLEAN install instead of an upgrade in place. The fact
that the above URL is a MS Office Support web page, leads me to believe that it
may be the existence of Office that does this dirty trick. I know most users
running Windows 10 that were upgraded do NOT have the OneDrive in the Documents
path. I even got an email from Microsoft this morning saying welcome to One
Drive…you’ve chosen to take advantage of OneDrive…. I did no such thing. I
think it’s being forced by MS just like the GetWindows10 downloads.

So far, Legacy seems happy with dealing with a file path that contains OneDrive
for all the “_AppData” --- something that caught Legacy support by surprise.
With multiple versions of Windows 10 now in use and the upgrade differing from
the clean installs, who knows where this leads.

Let the games begin.

Yes,
Go to Options - Customise 3.3
Choose Initial Caps and click the Apply button.
You may need to check the Master Surname List for surnames with prefixes and
edit them individually if necessary.

Brian,

Thanks for the info.

As long as it's also in the Documents folder on your hard drive so Legacy
can find the necessary files to run, it doesn't matter where your data,
media and web files go. I know Office 365 does save to the cloud, but other
versions of Office shouldn't.

I had saved my complete cus tom data and media location folder from
my previous install and copied onto the new system (it is all on a
different drive than the C: drive; the program itself was
installed to the usual default location on the C: drive.) I ran
the new Legacy and pointed it towards my custom location for the
family file. Everything is there. However in checking my
customization options, I noticed the following strange things.

__ __

Items 6.1 through 6.3 were all pointing towards
C:\Users\(name)\OneDrive\Documents\LegacyFamilyTree\_AppData\ with
the final sub-folder being “Data” for 6.1 Family File, “Media” for
6.2 Media Files, and “Temp” for 6.3 Temp files.

__ __

& nbsp; Notice the “OneDrive” in the path.

__ __

I know the OneDrive was not part of the Win7 OS and that Win10
gives users “free 15 GB” of cloud storage called “OneDrive” but
maybe I fell asleep at the switch and didn’t realize that Legacy
would attempt to set up the cloud storage for file locations by
default. Previously it was set up for the Legacy created
“_AppData” folders in the User folders.

When you hover over the Potential Problems Indicator, one of the options is
to change settings. Do the shift-right-click as instructed and deselect the
Standardization option for "Surnames entered in all uppercase".

Uppercase surnames is no longer the genealogy standard. If you want them in
uppercase in reports and web pages, you need to select that option on the
"Other" tab in Web Page Creation and "Format" tab in Report Options.
