The Click to Add is working for me in Legacy 9.0.0.444, it opens a menu of
options to add new son's or daughters or link to existing people to add them.
It also has an option to change how children are viewed.

For the number of children displayed,
I use Custom, Option 8, 8.5 Child Columns on View, Best Fit Columns
This allows a 12 children family to be displayed in 3 columns.

Is there a way to change the view in Legacy, to see more than about 5 or 6
children in the Children pane?
I have this in grid list. By minimizing the Ribbon I can see 7 children. It
might be helpful if the Parents pane could be "switched off", and the lower
ones have more vertical space - but I can see that would create other problems
(usability, programming).

There are other views, like Descendants, which are flexible enough to show a
few generations if the families are small.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adopted person

2023-10-17 Thread Colin McCullough
Hi Terry
I would add the biological mother + father parents first.
Then add the biological child subject.
Right-click on the child. Select child settings
Fill in relationships to parents ie biological etc.
Then in family view add adopted parents by by clicking on the + at the top of
the biological parents' name
Add their details
Right-click on the child again and fill in relationships as adopted and also
click on the set to preferred child button.
This is how I do it successfully.

I have just discovered a person who was adopted, and was took the name of her
adoptive parents.

So there is the name of her biological parents, the name of her adoptive
parents, and her married name.

How do people write this up in Legacy?

[LegacyUG] Marriage Notes

2018-12-26 Thread Colin McCullough
Hi Folks
Hope you are having a happy festive season
I recently did a Ancestors book which went OK .
However on checking it I found that there were quite a few marriage notes
indicated for couples that only had one letter and several spaces . This upset
the look of things and used valuable space. Cannot explain how they happened
but assume that they must have come over in my original Ged-Com setup and not
been noticed until now.
Example from report looks like next 4 lines
.
.
Y
.
.
I have in the search = find= found and been able to isolate the individuals
[300] involved and printed a list but can only see how to delete general or
research or medical notes in bulk by clearing notes command.
I cannot find how to treat marriage notes in a similar way. I started
correcting one by one but this is going to be a long way surely??
Can any one understand my explanation of the problem and help with a possible
solution ???

Thanks for your reply, Brian. I suspected about as much as you've stated.

TNG (The Next Generation of Generation of Sitebuilding,
http://www.tngsitebuilding.com/ ) is what I use to as a website to display my
family tree that I manage in Legacy. I guess you could call it "open source"
in that the PHP scripts can be modified - and often with quite useful
improvements. The better "mods" seem to eventually become part of TNG upgrades.

What I was looking for with Legacy was "utility" mods that could do things that
are not currently built into Legacy - such as reports tailored to user needs,
and simple Excel/Access editing or searching of Legacy databases. I know you
didn't support LTools, and because it was a commercial product, there were
probably impediments to using a good idea from it (or any other 3rd-party
program) in subsequent versions of Legacy.

It just seems that if there were an active community of Legacy users (as there
is for TNG), with the ability to create mods for public use (at the user's own
risk), then good ideas would come quicker for future improvements to Legacy.
The mod would enable the value of a potential improvement to be assessed "in
advance" - rather than the current system of user suggestions and potential use
by Legacy in the future.

It also seems like a vibrant community of Legacy users, working together to
improve Legacy, would be good for the Millenia Corp. as well.

Thanks again for hearing me out.

There is no Millennia supported sites or tools of the sort you seem to be
looking for (I looked at the forum you included in you message). The only
officially endorsed applications are those listed on our Add-ons.
These are third party developed programs which can access the Legacy database
and which provide features not included in or that augment Legacy features.
Support for those Addons is by the third party developers not by Millennia corp.

Ltools is the only tool that I am aware of that would access and update the
Legacy database. The application was never endorsed by the company so users of
Ltools were using it at their own risk. If they messed up their Legacy database
to the point where it was unusable by Legacy we could not help them.

Never having used TNG I have no idea how those "Mods" worked with TNG nor what
support if any is provided by the owners of TNG to those who use the mods.

Legacy has provision for entering aliases, so enter him with the birth family
name and his marriage and children under the new name. You can swap the birth

2016-02-02 Thread Colin McCullough
Hi Folks

I am working on my wife's immediate family entering into legacy 8.0.0.538
deluxe.

My wife's father was one of 11 siblings (6 sisters + 4 brothers) All born with
same surname.
Just before marriage due to circumstances one of the brothers changed name
(Christian + Last name)
He then got married and had a normal family all using new names.
Naturally I entered him in birth family's data but am now faced with this new
name scenario. Cannot see a cover for this in help files.
How do I handle this to keep it on an even keel with both names?
Appreciate some advice please
Thanks
