Jennifer,

I think you are talking about the Prompt for Detail on the Source Clipboard so
that you can change the detail before applying again.
I leave it on because I often change source on the clipboard and forget I have.
But sure you can turn it off.
Look at the Source Clipboard screen when it is open.
See the checkbox lower left corner.
It is also controlled from Options > Customise 7.4
If you watch any of the webinars from Geoff Rasmussen you'll see he works with
it off but is far more disciplined than I am in applying the particular source
and detail to every field and person it applies to before doing anything else.

including alternate names in duplicates.

For example, I have 4 direct descendants from my

William and was always known as William. The first William named
his first son William who was known as Willy. William (Willy)
named his son William who was known as Bill. William's (Bill)

Thank you for the answer. That's what I thought and I

it's easier to illustrate.

/William X (Occitan: Guillém X; 1099 – 9 April 1137),
called the Saint, was Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony,
and Count of Poitou (as William VIII) from 1126 to 1137/.

I then enter William X as the primary name and William
VIII as the alternate name. The next time I enter William
VIII's name, Legacy won't recognize it as a duplicate
unless it includes the other names in its check.

Hi, Cathy,

Very interesting idea on listing your sources. I think I may steal the “Book”
idea but I really like things listed by location when it comes to records. For
instance I do “MA – Worc, Co – Mendon – x” and find that convenient. But
that is a great idea on listing the books I have as sources. Problem remains
title of the book is not necessarily even one of my family names. Like the one
I’m currently working on.

I’m familiar with using Find in docs and notes and things like that but am
wondering if searching a .pdf works the same way.

Thanks,

Jane,
I think you'd need to generate a Source Report, save as PDF and search that.
It helps to work out how you are going to use the Source List Name and edit all
Master Sources to change the Source List names. I start the Source List Name
with a code for the type of source (eg Book, PR for Parish Register , Cen for
Census, Cem for cemetery, V for Vital Record indexes, ...) and then the archive
or country or state depending on the source ...

Gene,

What you are seeing is probably because PAF did not support the use of
Sources. Because of that people would insert their source details into the
notes preceding them with a special character (I think it was an Exclamation
Point) Since notes may or may not contain source info and there could be
multiple source entries in a note Legacy cannot extract and create sources
from those note entries.

I do not think there is any way except to bite-the-bullet and manually
create a source from those PAF note entries.

You can create a search list from those using each census event and work
through it until you have created sources for each one. Slow but sure will
win the race. I have been working since June in my file and have
successfully worked through to add 1911 and 1901 Census events from the
Canadian Archives. I finished the 1911 census and started the 1901 census on
17 Aug there were 706 starting people in the 1901 list and yesterday I had
the count down to 390.

I do not use Share for Census Events, so my list of Event roles for Censuses
should be the original. It shows "None - leave blank", "Occupant" and
"Witness"and then "add/edit roles..." so just create "Occupant" or "Witness" if

I agree with Ian, that is how I do it.

To tag the female partner as a Mistress gives the partnership a feeling of
something illegal to be spoken about in hushed tones. In my younger days a
mistress was " a bit on the side."

Just my thoughts.

[LegacyUG] ***SPAM*** RE: ***SPAM*** Recorded source materials

I tried using the share feature but as you cannot change anything on the
detail without changing everyone's detail, I started using the source
clipboard and am very happy with it.

I'm confused about creating sources and then linking them to individual
records. Excuse me if I can't express myself clearly. I know what I want
to do but don't understand the best way to it.

For example,

I've created a record for a page from the 1892 NY State census. There are
28 people from my family on this image. How do I attached the exact same
citation to each person without creating a new record for each?

Or maybe--- I shouldn't be creating a source for just one page, but for the
whole census and then details for each but I still don't want to have to
recreate an entry for each person.

Thank you for any input!

Beverly

Legacy 10? Can any of you in the beta group answer one question about the
upgrade? I am in the process of switching to RootsMagic 8 solely for the
reason that Legacy 9 does not support all the international diacritics that I
need. My ancestors were from Poland and not having the correct spelling of
their names and locations is bothersome. I would really like to stay with
Legacy, but if the next version does not support the international diacritics,
I'll proceed with my migration.

Thanks in advance if you can provide this information.

Jane,

I've already told you how you can remove all broken links.
Use Tools > Media Relinker and make sure the relevant checkbox is checked.
You may want to save the broken link log first so you know where you may have
to re-add media.
The link I gave you tells you how to understand that log.
In future, if you must rename images, use the Picture Centre to do it.
That way you won't break the link. Use the Rename on the Picture List tab and
not on the Attached Pics tab if you are renaming media that is attached to
Sources.

What word would other LUGgers use in the following circumstance. I want to
create a sentence for a Civil Partnership Event which reads:

Civil Partnership: on 16 March 2021 she ... Jane Doe.

I know how to set up the Sentence (the name of the partner will be entered
in the Desc field) but it's the wording in place of ... that I am wondering
about.

The person who told me about this partnership of his relative said they
"married" (his inverted commas) and I originally wrote that, but now that
marriage of same sex couples is allowed (in some countries) I don't want to
use that word for a Civil Partnership. I could say "was partnered with" but
it's a bit repetitive when the Sentence begins with the title "Civil
Partnership."

Thanks for the responses so far.

Kathy -- I have a couple of clarifying questions/points for you..

One, by Burial Event, are you saying you record the Cemetery in the Events/Fact
section, and not as an Event Address (reached by clicking the + sign after the
Burial Date/Place field)? Just wanted to confirm.

Second, my core question was about the relocation of a headstone -- not the
corpse. In the case I mentioned, no bodies were ever exhumed/disinterred.
Their headstones were simply picked up and relocated to a different cemetery.
The bodies themselves (whats left of them anyway) remain buried under the now
public park.

I think, after this thread, and consideration, the burial notes field is the
best to indicate the relocation of the headstone.

Now, to get FAG to help clean up all the wrong information on the memorials.
Much bigger problem! -- well over 1,000 memorials indicate incorrect burial
locations. Maybe Find A Grave should be renamed Find A Headstone. Might be
more accurate. :)

Scott,

If people are buried and then moved, I would record the first interment (as
usually noted on a death certificate, if any) as the Burial event. If the body
is subsequently moved, I would note that in the note section with the place and
date, if known.

If the body were formally exhumed for some reason, I would make that a separate
event with an explanation. This would apply to those you mention being removed
from the town commons.

In some cases it might depend on which burial has the most information. In the
past people were reburied in cases of a second marriage, or person dying young
in a different location from subsequent family burials.

A cremated person can be buried in multiple locations!

Hey all...

Need some advice on how to handle some cemetery relocation issues.

First, if a person was buried in Cemetery X, but relocated to Cemetery Y, I've
been recording it as follows:

Original burial information to Burial DatePlace Field

Attach Cemetery Event Address to Burial Date/Place Field

Reinterment information to Reburial Event Fields. Add Cemetery name to
"Description"

Attach Cemetery Event Address to Event

That's pretty straight forward -- record the event as it occurred at the time
in the principal field (Burial) and the successive event as an Event.

But, I've recently come across a number of ancestors for whom their headstones
were relocated to a different cemetery, but their corpses were not disinterred.
This is now challenging me as to how to record the location of the headstone.

For those who may have New England ancestors, this issue arises in Connecticut
where at least two 17th century towns, New Haven and Guilford, relocated the
headstones of the dead buried on their town commons to cemeteries established
in the early 19th century. In both cases, only the headstones were moved--the
corpses remain buried under the town common, the exact site of the graves now
lost to history.

It seems obvious to record the original burial information as above -- but how
to denote the relocation of the headstone? It's important to keep track of, if
for no other reason than to explain the plethora of Find a Grave and other
memorials that seem to indicate burial occurred in these newer cemeteries (I'm
working with Find a Grave in hopes of cleaning this up).

I suppose the best way is to record this as a burial note.

Your thoughts?

If so, then for consistency, should I use Burial notes for actual reinterment
of corpses instead of Events?

Lastly -- how do you record cemeteries? Do you use Event Addresses like I do,
attaching them to the Burial field, do you use Events, or something else?

Thanks,

Scott

ever since they dropped support for Picasa w/o a way to export data, software
in which I had added faces to ~80K pictures, a process that took countless
hours over many, many years. Fortunately, I found a new picture management
software that has an import function from Picasa. Carbonite has worked fine
for me, and like the old saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. As
google, trust is gone; screw me once and there's no second chance. :)

I use basic Carbonite. A couple of clarifications:

1. Unless I pause Carbonite, my files are continuously backed up through
the day, not once per day.
2. Video files are backed up automatically per instructions on this page,
"https://support.carbonite.com/articles/Personal-Mac-Windows-Adding-Excluded-Files-to-Your-Backup";.
It's a one-time manual process per video file type (avi, mov, etc.), but it
works flawlessly.

continual backup as I worked on documents. Over time, it seemed their practice
changed and my modified computer files were not getting backed up immediately.
I contacted Support to ask about this and was told that backups were done once
every 24 hours. Since I don't leave my computer on overnight, I was manually
telling Carbonite to back up files I modified before shutting down the computer.

Additionally, Carbonite does not automatically back up video files (MP4). You
must individually select each one and add it to your backup. Carbonite also
discontinued their feature of allowing mobile devices (phones and tablets) to
be backed up as part of a subscription. Finally, Carbonite requires a separate
subscription for each computer you want to back up.

For these reasons, I switched to iDrive two years
ago. They offer 5 terabytes of backup storage for $69.95/year and unlimited
devices, including mobile devices. They currently have a special offer of just
$6.95 for your first year of service. Their service offers continual or
scheduled backup, as well as many of the same things Carbonite offers. I have a
desktop computer, two laptops, my tablet, and cell phone being backed up and
have only used 5% of my allocated 5 terabytes. FYI, I have no affiliation with
iDrive other than being a satisfied customer.

I also use Dropbox, but mostly as short-term storage for items I need to access
from anywhere or while in-transit awaiting transfer to one of my other
computers. You can get an additional 500 MB of free storage at Dropbox for each
person you refer and signs up for their own free account. As a result, I now
have 8 GB of free storage at Dropbox.

Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive (Microsoft) and others of this ilk are not true
backup services. They are just cloud storage similar to an external hard drive,
but on another company's servers. You must proactively choose to move files to
any of those services to keep them backed up. They are similar to what you do
if you use an external drive; the difference being your data is stored on
another company's servers away from your home. The advantages being that you
can access your data from any computer anywhere (which, by the way you can also
do with Carbonite, iDrive, Backblaze, etc.) and, if your house burns down, your
data is still protected. For this reason, some people use these cloud storage
services for their genealogy software program database (Legacy, RootsMagic,
Family Tree Maker, etc.), assumin

On the main Legacy Screen there are six Tabs across the top; Legacy Home,
Family, Pedigree, Descendant, Chronology and Index.

The Index tab is what people are talking about. It is like the View > Name List
but you do not have to open a new screen to access it. Using the RIN, Given and
Surname boxes you can change the sort order (in the same way as in the Name
List). In Deluxe Versions you can also customize the Columns displayed on that
view by clicking on the Column titles.

sure I have you right,
1) No part of an event can be searched? Including sources? And
2) When you talk about putting the address in the Place/Location, you are
referring to the address in the plus button to the right of the location field?

Scott,
This is one reason why I don't use Event Addresses. You can't search on them.
I put the address in with the Place/Location. The tools for the Master Location
list are far superior to the tools for the Master Event Addresses list. Also
you can search for a Place contains x but not for an Event Address.

Bruce,
There is no reason for having duplicates on your hard drive if they are exact
duplicates. Legacy copies rather than moves media for extra safety.

However, there is a reason if you resize down the copy of images you attach to
Legacy.

Archive sized copies of photos are large. Attaching them at this size to Legacy
makes Legacy work hard and slows Legacy down whenever it is doing something
that requires a thumbnail of the photo - changing view if this photo is shown
on Family View or Pedigree View, opening the relevant Media Gallery, making
reports with pictures that include this large picture ...
Legacy only needs pictures sufficiently large to give good output with the best
method you intend to use, at the size you intend to include pictures. If you
intend commercial printing with the pictures being 2 inches wide then you
probably want to have your pictures 1200 pixels wide so they can be printed at
600dpi although you'll get pretty good results if it is half that. But that is
still a lot smaller than an archive sized copy. [For those who know heaps about
digital images, yes I know that this is a simplification.]

Do you have any picture of the people in the "other tree" - the ones that
you want to make stand out? IF NOT, you could create an image which is
simply a rectangle of a certain colour or a large cross or some other symbol
and attach that to each individual, so it shows as their portrait picture in
Family View.

That is a GREAT question. And one I struggle with so I generally list them with
my most recent genealogical interest 1st, then others, date of pic, place. I’d
love to hear what others do.

Example 1: Bennett 3, Wm Robt & Icephenia KENNEDY, 1 gparents Miles & Laura
JORDAN & 2 parents Rich. & wf Luann GAUNNT [which is a tryptich, entered 3
times, each time with a different photo listed 1st]

Example 2: Taylor, Tommy R & Hope WALDEN, Bob & Helen Walden, Lyn & Gary & Lee
Murray abt 1968 MA [this one I feel badly about as I listed my father 1st even
tho he is not on the left side of the picture]

See? I’d love to know what others do.

Far north Queensland. Wonderful. I've been in the areahmmm, 3 times so
far. Love going to Australia.

I hear what you are saying. Actually, if you are going with the 8 folder
system, you will have your grandmother as a child in her father's name's
folder but with her marriage, you will find her from that point in her
husband's name's folder. Going further back with her parents will be
increasing their folder size as far back as you choose to go. All branches
will still be in that folder. If you see a list, it will be alpha. This is
an example of one of my picture's file name:
Walden, Irving Holbrook b cert 1871 Mar 31 MA, Worc Co, Milbury, cert copy
It is in the Walden folder (my maternal gfather) but so are Hixons (my
maternal ggmother) so you see. Actually, Irving was one of my gfather's
nephews.
Don't know if you've seen any transcriptions on Family Search. I like them
for their clarity and, as I wish to have .jpgs, our old friend Microsoft
Paint is terrific for putting text down and saving as .jpg.

My, I do get wordy,

Thanks Jane - I do like your idea of keeping the folders in the direct lines
- so 8 grandparent's as you are doing. That makes it neat and easily
searchable if the labelling has been done correctly and consistently. It
will make it easy to know which folder to go to straight away rather than
search through goodness knows how many birth certificates etc as I currently
do.

Another query though please. If we have Thomas Smith (grandfather) and he
marries Susan Marston (grandmother) that is two folders for 2 grandparents.
I could then open 2 more folders one for Susan Marston's father (my great
grandfather) and one for Susan's mother (my great grandmother).

I could then do a sub folder for Thomas Smith's father - keeping each
generation of direct line Smith in a sub folder of my grandfather, I could
also then create sub folders for her generation. I do see that this would
lead me to have more folders/sub folder. and would appear, if I have read it
correctly, to be different to what you are doing by keeping the 8 direct
lines only. That's if I've understood you, apologies if not.

I think I could label the images something like
SmithThomas4xgfb1885BapCRotherham. But I need to work on the labelling. Some
of the folders might only have 1 or 2 images in depending how far back they
are.

Let me know what you think and I will give it a trial with a few images and
see how it looks and works.

Many thanks for your suggestions and help.

I, for one, still just have folders in the 8 grandparent's names. It is
conceivable that that might change and if it does..can't do subfolder to
the father, that would tell me to make subfolders for all children which
will just get messy. For me. So far, I just like the name followed by a b

at what stage does someone have their own folder?

For example - my great grandfather is Thomas Smith, so in his folder I would
put his birth, marriage, census returns, birth certificates of children and
other information. So, when my grandfather (also Thomas Smith) is born do I
make another folder for him and duplicate census returns and any other

C:Pictures/Legacy which is very similar to what you have Jane. And I do like
the way you identify them.

Can I ask do you indicate what it is ie marriage, birth or is this assumed
because of the other information.

For example, I have a lot of male Smiths named Thomas and a fair bit of
information on each one so knowing what it is I am looking for might help.

I realise I can choose what to add but it is helpful to have ideas from

I know you will have a bunch of different ways to consider. Here's mine:
I keep all my images and documents in, for instance, C:pictures/Legacy
pictures in/Sadler [one of my 8 grandparents including my husband's]. I file
them last name first, first name and initial, if there's a maiden name, it
is capitalized, date, location.
The only extra folder I have is cemeteries because I just had to have at
least 1 picture of each one which I file by State, County, City, name of
Cemetery.
I've always been quite satisfied with this method and never had a problem.
Oh, and I've been using a computer for genealogy since 1986 and loving it.

everything is easily visible without having to open another program.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Naming Images and documents

If this question is not considered a specific Legacy question I apologise
and am happy to receive message directly to my email.

I keep all my images and documents relating to my family history in a file
on my computer labelled 'Legacy'. When I then attach one of these images to
a person or event, I name it as I named it when I put it in my Legacy
folder.

I have realised that I have kept no specific format when labelling these
images and am wondering how others label them.

Are they better named by category ie Marriage, Smith John 1837 etc or would
it be better by name ie Smith John, Marriage 1837

I envisage it being a personal choice but wondered whether there is a
preferred way.

Thank you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Naming Images and documents

2020-05-07 Thread Jane Linkswiler

Have fun, Jane in Phoenix

You would need to look at some of the 'free' PDF tools like NovaPDF since
these may have the ability to strip data out of a PDF file.
Unfortunately, I have not actually tried it myself, since 99.99% of mine are
from Ancestry and FindMyPast in Jpeg format. Also look at the website to see
if has an option for Jpegs. Obviously, you can attach it as a Document but
it will not be included in a report.

Yes, many of the genealogy software programs only allow you to attach image
files, not PDFs. If you have access to a full version of Adobe Acrobat, not
just the free reader, you can save PDF files as JPG or other image formats.
There are also quite a few free converter apps. cnet.com is
a reliable source for such free apps. Another trick that I have used is making
a screen capture of the image and saving it as a jpg, instead of downloading
it. Depending on your computer the PRNT SCRN key or the windows snip app will
work. But try both as they have a big difference in quality for the jpg file
they produce. For me, the windows snip feature works better than the PRNT SCRN
button, as I can select what I want to capture.

Thanks Brian,

So, it appears that no parents are recorded on FamilySearch.org for this
individual. So why can I not use the FS popup to simply click the "move to
right hand side" for this individual's father and mother and done...? The only
option I get for the parents is ‘unlink’…

Must I go onto the web site FamilySearch.org to manually add each parent using
the ID that I already have in Legacy, but cannot perform that function from the
FS popup dialog?

Thanks,

Andrew

You have eliminated two of the three possible reasons so by elimination check
for the third reason "The person is linked to the wrong individual in
FamilySearch." That becomes the most likely.

I just had a case in my own file where my file had different parents for the FS
person. The parents did not display and had the red chain icon on the My Legacy
Person side of the screen because of that difference.

A careful examination of the sources in my file revealed that I had linked my
Legacy person to the wrong FS person based on similar names of parents but I
had added an incorrect spouse from a marriage record.

Examining the source details for the marriage revealed that the incorrect
person was born in Ireland according to the marriage source while my person was
born in Canada.

I unlinked my person by deleting the incorrect FSID. A new search found the
correct FSID so the person is now linked to the correct parents both in my file
and in FamilySearch.org. I have unlinked the incorrect spouse and children,
deleted a whole bunch of events which applied to the incorrect person and will
now have to rebuild the person's family (FS has a different spouse and list of
children).

Thelma,

You can use Legacy Check/Repair in Safe Mode and see if that helps.
Or sometimes just using the Legacy Compact File before the Check/Repair is
enough.

If you have Microsoft Access (it's part of Office 365) you can open your fdb
file in Access and use Database Tools > Compact and Repair Database

Then open the file in Legacy and Check/Repair the file. It likely will no
longer have the error.

Your Legacy database is an Access database.
The Legacy Check/Repair does more specific things than the Access Compact and
Repair.

found that using this format suites my needs in properly identifying that it is
an independent city, but also making it easy to differentiate it from being an
actual place name:

Baltimore, (Independent City), Maryland, USA

This puts the term "Independent City" in place of the county, but the
parentheses indicate that it is not the actual name of the county. This also
lets people know that you didn't leave the county field blank.

Hope this helps!

When I started my genealogical research many years ago, I was told to ignore
spelling (one s or double s; D or T; -son or -sen; kn or just n; etc). Say the
name out loud - if it sounds familiar, consider it and research it. Best
lesson I learned.

The reason was that the average person before 1880 usually got no more than an
8th grade education and more likely only 5th grade. Spelling was not a top
priority. Don't get hung up on spelling and which version is correct.

Sure enough - I have a legal document with the main person's surname spelled 5
different ways.

Vital events are those shown on the Individual Edit screen, Birth, Bapt/Chr,
Death and Burial. Those are treated differently from the events you enter

Jenny, I have been using Legacy since v 1 or 2. I eagerly adopted the

sourcing my material. Obviously, I have been using the Sourcewriter without

think of all the pictures I've attached where I could have sourced them.
Shame on me. While I'm at it, thanks for all you do to help us. I never miss

Presently I have 14 user defined events pertaining to Marriage such as
Marriage Bans, Marriage License, Marriage Certificate, Marriage Official,
etc. I try to set up Events that have documents or images associated with
them as event photos/images print with various books and reports.

In the case of your marriage ring, proposal, engagement, etc., there are
several possibilities that come to mind. In older times, engagement photos
were quite common but finding them among family heirlooms may not happen.
Into more modern time, newspapers often published engagement notices with
photos.

>From your post I get the impression that there might be some interesting
story or facts surrounding the marriage ring and/or proposal in question. If
so, I would create an event called Marriage Proposal, write the full story
in MS Word (or your favorite word processor), then attach the document to
the Marriage Proposal event. You could add images to the document or simply
attached the separately in the event.

Just a suggestion

Hi Cathy

That was pretty well what I had suspected. It almost seems that the
developers only built half of the system with dealing with locations/places
vs addresses, or just added addresses as a later extension.

I started using the locations to locate a physical area such as a
Village or Town / / County / Country (being UK based and based on the
GeoLocation list), with occasional extensions to add further sub-units, such
as Hatcham, New Cross, , Surrey, England where Hatcham, Surrey would be
misleading.

I then started finding references to churches, as in baptisms and
marriages, and started adding those to the location list, and my current
locations list is around 2500 entries, of which 200 or so start with St
church / location. I rather suspect that this is what most users do. But
this started to become more complex, especially as those entries were
included in the Location index in reports at the building level.

So I then started looking at the Address fields, which happily show up
as an icon on the marriage and events, or as Address.. option against birth,
baptism, death and buried entries. Now, as I am working through my database,
I am moving all of the entries in Location that refer to a building, or
vessel, into the Address entries, where I can be specific to the building or
church by street and location. Currently I have nearly 500 churches, or
equivalent, and more than 100 other addresses. The reverse is that I have
removed many of those from the Locations list since they map to a single
location.

My feeling is that I am working the 'right' way to record Addresses as
being different from Locations. but that the system, while supporting both,
does not have sufficient support for addresses or integration between
addresses and locations.

Chris

I think the only thing you can do is work from the Master List for Event

I leave that to those that do use them.

Nothing I do depends on keeping to the artificial 4 location field idea

place the location of the church etc. into the corresponding fields in the

Where necessary, usually for baptism, death and marriages, I normally place
the location of the church etc. into the corresponding fields in the individual
or the marriage, and for marriages I also place them into events for marriage
banns and witnesses. This then means that if I enable it in the reports I will

Thanks for all that. I have been doing it all wrong and 'obediently'
saving documents as 'documents'. I now think all my 'documents' should have
been 'Pictures'.
Is there a way of getting a list of where I have done that?

I totally agree and have been doing that for quite a while now. Where I
haven't had the option to save as a .jpg, I copy things into a text box in
that good old Windows program: Paint and can then save as a .jpg or may send

I watched a Watch Geoff Live webinar recording last night, in which Geoff
was creating a Source Citation for a Probate File he had found on-line.
When it came to "Add Media" to the Citation, Geoff selected "Picture" and
one of the webinar watchers asked why he had not selected "Document." I
thought it worth expanding on the answer which Geoff gave as it is probably
something which arises quite often.

I guess the enquirer was confused because the media was, in fact, "a
document"! But in the case of Legacy Citations, the word "document" has a
rather specific meaning relating to the file format, not to the nature of
the Source item itself.

We usually refer to any paper file as "a document" but once it has been
filmed or scanned or photographed, the resulting medium can be saved in one
of two ways: either as "an image", most commonly named filename.jpg or
filename.tif, or as "a document", most commonly named filename.pdf or
filename.doc or with another extension relating to word processing software.

To me, the biggest advantage of attaching an image (usually ,jpg) rather
than a document (usually .pdf) to a Source Citation is that an image file
can be viewed within Legacy, whereas in order to view a document file, it
has to be opened in an external program, such as a word processor or PDF
viewer.

I prefer to enter the city where the burial occurs. I put the cemetery in
the burial address found in the + plus sign. Also in the +, burial notes I
put the plot, if available, the Find A Grave memorial number, and anything
else pertinent. I notice a number of people put the cemetery name where the

burial occurs. This just expands the location address file.

I am jumping into the conversation late. Here is what I do...

I create an Obituary event.
I transcribe the entire obituary into the event notes.
I attach a scan of the entire newspaper page to the event (if I only have a
clipping found in someone's possession and I can't find the newspaper page
then I will scan just the clipping) I create a source citation.
I extract/enter all of the evidence contained in the obit and attached the
citation to it.

moved to burial notes, along with FAG info. When Geoff or someone mentioned
putting obits as an event, so you could make a report of all people who had
obit, I started putting them as events, which I still do. Now I am working
on sourcing them (I do not use sourcewriter) and have entered some in the
detail of the source. I am confused. What is the best way of entering
obits, so you can have them appear on reports? Is there a webinar
specifically covering this? Thanks for suggestions.

to fix it. Maps are used in numerous areas in Legacy.

I wonder why they can't use something like Google maps instead? I know
a ton of Legacy users use the mapping a lot and really miss it. I do!

Re: [LegacyUG] identify template already created

I took an email from Cathy to heart. I now put all info I can find into a
source and anything that doesn’t have its own field, I put into comments on the
next tab. Never can tell just what piece of info will help someone in the

Thanks, Leonard. I'm not completely happy with the solution in this case,
which was to use a template designated for "records removed to state archives,"
but no field for microfilm number. It's possible I can add that information
somewhere in the template - I just haven't looked to see where yet.

Cathy, thank you. I spoke to the director of reprographics at the Kentucky
Dept. of Libraries & Archives today, and learned a great deal about how
marriages in Kentucky were recorded and how the KDLA organized them into record
series upon acquiring them.

I was kind of flummoxed as to what source template in Legacy to use. Learning
the precise record type you’re dealing with is the first step, and may seem
obvious (but it really took some time to define that – there are so many
different record types for marriages). By determining I was dealing with a
license from 1808 I was able, by searching for “license,” to quickly come up
with the available options in Source Writer. Then I was stuck on whether to
choose “removed to State Archives” or “microfilm/fiche,” since both applied to
the record I had. I chose the former, and produced a source citation exactly
as shown in EE. The KDLA director said he did not think it necessary or
customary to cite the microfilm number, but rather the record type, book and
page number for the source only (with the other relevant pieces of data). I’m
still not quite sure about that, and wonder if I should cite that somewhere.
But I feel I made the right choice as the template for “microfiche/film,” while
providing the film # in the cite, did not produce the repository in the note,
but only the bibliography, leaving one to presume (presumably) that the record
was at the county level.

I wish there was a chat group somewhere devoted to sources – they’re so
important, complex and nuanced – seems like there should be a forum to discuss
them. They’re fun too – sort of like a Rubik’s cube – trying to get all the
elements to line up right.

Jane,

You can restore your backup(s) to a new name and recover notes if necessary.
Though that requires you remember who.
Just check that the notes aren't there in the merged person.
I'm not exactly sure when and how this bug operates - I just know to beware. I
don't do much merging.

As Jay says, there is currently a bug when you do that.
You can use the Edit button and safely make changes to the Notes there

Check for duplicates frequent ly. Set birth age range wide. If you have
duplicate entries over hours and years of work, you should find them.
Then you can merge the records and connect them as required with
the merged
info.

Currently, if you have notes to merge from two different records,
you must
copy the notes for each person to notepad or some other program,
do your
editing, finish the merge, then modify the notes using the saved
Notepad
file. If you try to append notes from one record to another during the
merge, they will be lost.

Many of my relatives were born and died in the St. Louis area. In Missouri,
the City of St. Louis is not within any county - it is a separate
independent entity. But, the City of St. Louis is adjacent to St. Louis
County. While St. Louis County is made up of dozens of cities, the names of
these cities are almost always ignored - everybody uses "St. Louis" as the
place name, whether they are in the City of St. Louis or in a city or town
in St. Louis County. This makes trying to identify the precise town or city
very difficult, and I've ended up with a lot of inconsistencies in the
geographic names.

How would you experienced Legacy users handle this situation? I am inclined
to follow these two conventions: (1) If the record identifies a specific
city in St. Louis County, I will use that name (e.g., "Clayton, St. Louis,
Missouri, United States"). 2. In all other cases, when the record
references "St. Louis", I will use "St. Louis, Missouri, United States."

What are your thoughts?

Fitz Alan meant he was the son of Alan. It had nothing whatsoever to do with
legitimacy!

Later, Fitz Allen became used as a surname and was used for daughters as
well as sons.

"de Ferrers" was never a surname. It meant the person was "from Ferrières".

Medieval genealogists do not use the "de" in assigning a surname, nor do
they use "mac", "von", "van", "di", etc., because those words also means
"from". In a database such as Legacy, it is so very much simpler, as well as
correct, to use the place name "Ferrières" (which was Anglicized into
"Ferrers", "Hohenstaufen", "Egmond", etc.

Imagine searching through all the "de " to find the one.

Also, if you are venturing into medieval times, Legacy is the perfect
program because it allows for many AKAs. That is essential, because people
usually referred to in documents by one or more of the titles they held, not
by their place of origin. It is incredibly helpful to have all the AKAs
listed because then, when you find someone mentioned, you can search by that
alternate name. It also allows you to have a listing of the succesive earls,
duke, etc., of a place right there in your index!

The surnames below, found in documents, are underlined:

Take William d'Aubigny. He was also known in documents as William d"Albini,
and William, 1st Earl of Arundel, among others.

John fitz Alan of Arundel was known as John 4th Earl of Arundel, John
FitzAlan, John fitz Alan, 2nd Earl of Clun, John FitzAlan, 2nd Earl of Clun.

As the Middle Ages progressed, the titles came fast a furious. Depending
when in a person lifetime the documents were written, the same person would
be mentioned by a different title.

If you are venturing into the medieval, BEWARE! Use primary sources or
reliable secondary sources ONLY.

Primary sources include the Calendar of Close Rolls, Calendar of Fine Rolls,
Calendar of Inquistions Post Mortem (IPMs), Calendar of Inquistions
Miscellaneous, Calendar of Papal Registers, e. alia.

Also be aware that even the reliable secondary sources such as Complete
Peerage, Domesday, Descendants, Domesday People, Europäische Stammtafeln,
and Settipani's tomes, have been corrected as new documents are being
discovered all the time.

When I try to use the clipboard for subsequent citations (for other items of

I, too, have my Legacy on my desk computer and a laptop but, since I like to
work in both places, I use the wonderful Intellishare to keep things straight.
In fact, just finished an intellishare merge and both computers will be the
same for awhile. I really love that feature.

Take the file you used to install Legacy to the first computer and copy it to a

that file to install Legacy to the second computer.

Then any appropriate databases and media files would also have to be moved via
backup and maybe be delivered by a flash drive to the second computer.

Any settings and license information would have to be made on the second
computer, so that is will function like the first computer.

Hi Jane,

The core parts of legacy are in the drop box, not the whole program.

You cannot run Legacy from a Drop Box or a Cloud account.

The main fdb file and a few bits and pieces are in the db. Everything else is
where it should be so that it can work with Windows.

I hope this makes sense.

Hi Maria,
Down load the Standard version 9 to your LT, Then take a look at your
customer # on your PC, Write it down.
Open legacy on the LT then do this:

The Deluxe features are hidden inside the free Standard Edition. To unlock
the Deluxe features, start the program and click on Help > Unlock Legacy
Deluxe. Follow the prompts to enter your name and your Deluxe Customer
Number and click the Unlock button.

If you are going to use both the PC and the LT, you need to be sure you sync
your main file so that it can be accessed from either system.
I put my core Legacy files in my drop box so that I can access the file from
anywhere I am using Legacy.
If you choose to use both, then you need to change the 'location' of the
files. This is done through "Options"

I hope this helps.

Ian,
It's not possible to make your own SourceWriter templates. This has been asked
for, but for some reason rejected.

Another tip for UK records. Anything at the The National Archives can be
sourced using a Census template that has the relevant fields for the Department
code and series number in the Master Source and a field for the piece number in
the Source Detail.
I add folio and page to the piece box as well to follow TNA citation style. In
this detail Elizabeth Shown Mills seems to break her principles of keeping a
reference together. I haven't seen the latest editions of her work to see if
she's amended her English Census models.

Cathy

Thanks for the information; I had noticed some posts here about reverse
sorting addresses, but I didn't think it applied to my situation. And I do
occasionally "correct" the mapping / Bing Maps positioning for locations
that end up in the wrong continent, etc. But not for the historic place
naming.

Also, I should use the additional description you cited for
Newcastle/Toodyay - the "(now Toodyay)" is more explicit than how I have
been doing it.

I would like to include the farm/property names - "Summerhill", New Norcia,
Western Australia, Australia - but I have been putting this in Notes or a
residence event, assuming that the quotes and specific property names would
guarantee that the location couldn't be found by Bing Maps.

The article you referred to is good - I hadn't seen it.

Also, Brian Kelly's suggestion for positioning is a very logical method for
registering the historic location name at essentially the location of the
currently-used name for the location. Thanks, Brian.

Ian,

You can plot anything on the Bing maps in Legacy. Just highlight the
location you are mapping then right click on the map to put the pin in the
right place.

I include addresses, including farm names like your examples, in my
locations. Others don't.
Because I do this I always sort my location list from right to left when I
need places close to each other together on the list.

RE recording historical names. You might want to read this for one
suggestion.

http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-01014

Sometimes I simply put the current name in brackets.
Newcastle (now Toodyay), Western Australia, Australia.

Wam,
To see where your media attached to Legacy is, see either View - Master Lists -
Media Folder List or go to Options - Customise 6.2 and click View Current List
of Media Folders.
These may show the full path or use codes that reference the folders at 6.1
[Family File Folder] or 6.2 [Default Media Folder]

Option 6.2 should reference your parent media folder. You set this yourself.

What is unusual with your folder setup is that you don't have your data at a
different level in your folder hierarchy. More normal is Data and Media at the
same level with Pictures, Documents etc under that or Data as the parent folder
with Media under it.
Data\Media\Legacy Pictures\
However that shouldn't be a problem.

With your folder setup you are right that 6.2 should reference
D:\Dropbox\legacy-myname\

The default locations are
...\Documents\L egacy Family Tree\Data\
and ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\
but you don't have to use these. You just set 6.1 and 6.2 to the folder you are
using.

However you do have to have
...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\
This folder holds your Legacy Settings. You cannot change the name of any
element of that path.

RE the data. Note that your family file is .fdb. This is
the file that holds your data. The .tc is just a minor
associated file. The more features of Legacy you use, the more associated files
you'll have

[LegacyUG] intellishare

2017-03-12 Thread Jane Linkswiler
I love to use Intellishare to keep my files straight on 3 computers. Just
going to add some info to some people on one computer and since it includes
new sources it occurred to me to wonder, as the help file doesn't mention
them specifically, how does Intellishare handle sources on merged people?
Anyone know? or shall I be the guinea pig? Do any new sources get added to
the source list on the other computer, designated Keeper, automatically?

Re: [LegacyUG] List of image file names - 2 questions

2016-11-01 Thread Jane Linkswiler
How really great! I've never been into Scrapebooking so it never even occurred
to me to check that view but that was stupid. I should check everything about
the program just to see what's there. In fact, I just looked around a little at
Map Family and found several things that were incorrectly Geo-coded and was
able to fix them pretty easily.

Thanks, Sherry,

View > Scrapbook and click on "Print Media List"

It's in the Help file under "Media: List Report"

Depending on the report, you can add caption, description and date - it's not
available on all reports because there isn't always room for that information.
Click on Report Options on the main report window, go to the Pictures tab,
select to include pictures then click on the "Set Regular Picture Options"
button (same for Source Pictures), This info is in the Help file if you click
on the Help button when you're in the Report Options window.

Hi, I want to get a list of the image file names (there are about 8) associated
with a specific individual.

1) Is there any way to do that?

I've recently begun adding the filename in the "Desc." field under each image.

2) Is there a way to get the "Desc." to print on individual reports?

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding newspaper articles about a murder trial - Getting Event Date out of Range warnings

2016-10-30 Thread Jane Linkswiler
I really liked the idea someone came up with to go into the event definition
and check the box that says "Exclude from Potential Problems Report." You
would certainly do that with the Event Obituary. Granted the "trial" as an
event might take place before a person's death so you could set up an Event
with a name that would tell the reader it was after the individual's death
and check that box.

The original message to the list is in the attachment.

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages without
conversion to attachments should use a different email address for their
subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require this
conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email providers
will also work but you will have to give them a try.

The 1870 Federal Census for one of my ancestors indicates that he was an
inhabitant of "St. George's Hundred Subdivision No.9". in New Castle County,
Delaware. I'm familiar with the Hundreds and have a map of the Delaware
Hundreds from the 1868 state atlas, but can find no reference to
subdivisions. I would appreciate any information; a map of the subdivisions
would be wonderful!

I tried to find anything about customize in the manual and it is so general

For anyone using outlook.com, you don't have to mark it as spam:

Click on the email.
Click on the down arrow beside Junk
Click on "My friend's been hacked!"

You may get several more that are already in the pipeline, but after that (I
deleted 2076) you should get no more.

Legitimate emails from legacyusergroup still come through.

Over the last few days, I have been getting lots of e-mails, apparently from
legacyusergroup, all junk mail. In a period of just three minutes today, I
have received 945! They clearly have nothing to do with Legacy or legacy
groups. Has anyone else been experiencing this or similar? The address is
one I only use for reputable mailing lists like this, so I wonder if there
has been some kind of compromising going on, and felt it might be worth
mentioning here.

Kind regards,

Alex

Easy enough if you have a separate Event for each Census: simply modify the
Sentence so it includes 05 April 1891 (or whichever) in place of .

Personally, I have one Event named "England Census" (and one for "England
Census - Vessels" but that's beside the point!) but I keep a permanent list
of the Census dates, and other frequently used text, in a little program
called FreeClip which I *highly* recommend. It saves me hours of time in
data entry.

[LegacyUG] Master Source List

2016-02-25 Thread Jane Linkswiler
I fall somewhere between a Splitter and a Grouper. My Master Source List is
listed either under a location or a Family Name (I call my branches after my
grandparent's names and my husband's grandparents names). For census I have
Master Sources by State-County-Town or, if a different country than USA,
Country-(and divisions) and use detail to differentiate. That way I can
easily see a list of people in each place. I do the same with Tax info,
Marriage Records, Probate..anything that is located by place. Any books or
articles I have about a place..filed in the place. Any books, articles or
notes about any family..under the Family name. Makes the most sense to my
mind.

And, by the way, hello Cathy Pinner! Been a long time. Since the 2008 Legacy
Northern European Capitols Cruise, in fact.
