If you have those options turned on and the notes still do not show

also go to View > Master Lists > Event Definition and check that the

I looked for a global way to change the add notes to sentences for all

Linda:

I have published 4 genealogy family hard cover books of over 300 pages each. I
am currently in the process of publishing another family book. When you get
ready, I can send you information about how I published my books with all the
steps.

Here are some of the answers to your questions:

>>>1. Is there anything comparable to FTM's smart stories in Legacy?

I don't know anything about smart stories in FTM - so cannot comment

>>>2. In the text report can I insert pictures? If not is there a report where
>>>I can basically type a few paragraphs of information with at least some
>>>basic formatting options (font, font size, center or left alignment) and
>>>also add a few photos that I can size/resize as I want.

You can attach one picture to an event and it will then be published in the
report. Many people in my database have 15-20 events with pictures (baby, 1st
grade, 8th grade, high school, military, family, 50 anniversary are example
events that I have used and attach pictures to them). I have also include a
scrapbook of pictures that relate to a specific person as part of the report.
If you have 20 pictures attached to a person, you can choose to print all of
those pictures or just a select few based upon Tagging of the pictures.

>>>3. Can I make a report, save it, and then add it to a book? (FTM does not do
>>>this) I would like to be able to take the saved report make a few changes
>>>to it and save it as another report, thus creating two reports.

In Legacy's Publisher, you can create chapters of the book and arrange the
chapter orders as you want. The organization of your book can be saved and
then reloaded / reused, changed, or added to later. The reports are then
generated on the fly from your chapter contents. Chapters can include:
Ancestor Book, Descendant Book, Multiple lines of Descendants, Descendant
narrative, Ancestor Chart, Descendant Chart,, Family Group Record, Individual
Report, Timeline, placeholder pages (blank pages that you can later edit and
insert whatever you want), Origins report, migration report and others.

>>>4. Can I export the entire book to pdf?

The report outputs can be: Text file, HTML file, Rich Text file and PDF file.

>>>5. Can I export the book to an editable format (such as RTF)?

The report outputs can be: Text file, HTML file, Rich Text file and PDF file.

Legacy has the best report options of any genealogy software. It lets the user
control and change almost anything as to what is or isn't included. Sourcing
and indexing can be included, headers and footers, page numbering are all part
of the reporting options.

In my opinion, Legacy Family Tree is the Best genealogy program available today.

I have two books that I created in FTM. I spent a lot of time on these

[LegacyUG] adding death cause in notes

2015-10-07 Thread Judy Hogel
I am working with the 8.0.0.516 version of Legacy, build date 4 Sep 2015.

In the past, I was able to add a individual's death cause and have it show in
the family view screen for them, but I don't seem to be able to do this since I
updated my Legacy version.

In the past I was able to add the death cause by clicking on the + sign to the
right of date and place of death in the family view and then choosing "notes".
When I opened the "notes" there was a tab that I believe was labeled "Cause of
Death". When I opened that tab, I could enter the cause. If I am remembering
correctly, there may even have been a box to add primary cause and another box
for secondary cause. Then the cause the would be displayed for the individual
in the family view (I had added the Death Cause to be displayed for an
individual in my family view.) For those individuals that I had previously
added "Cause of Death" using that process, the cause of death still shows up
for those individuals in the family view.

However, now when I open the "notes" for death, all I get is a box in which I
can type notes. I no longer have a tab labeled "Cause of Death" as before. If
I just type the information in the box, the death cause does not show up in the
individual's box in the family view.

I checked the Help menu and I cannot find anything that addresses adding the
"Death Cause" in the notes. There is only general information about adding
notes.

Has the ability to add "Cause of Death" been eliminated in the newer version of
Legacy?

Thank you in advance for any guidance you may be able to offer.

Judy

2015-07-20 Thread Judy Weber
I have lost the data folder in my Legacy 8 program. How do I get it back? I
have found all the family files which were in the folder by accessing
OneDrive in the cloud. How can I return them in the data folder to the
Legacy 8 program? The family file I was working on does not give the prompt
to back up on the hard drive as it used to. And without the data folder in
Legacy I can't copy the folder containing the family files to One Drive. I
don't know what I did to cause this, but would be grateful for advice on how
to get the folder containing my family files back in the Legacy program as
it used to be.

[LegacyUG] Vision problem with Legacy

2015-05-26 Thread Judy Wardlaw
Sherry, I believe that you may be able to help me here.

A friend of a friend sent me this email.
...
"Are you aware of anyone with Vision problems using Legacy ?

If so what settings are they using ?

I have a friend who has Legacy 7 on a Notebook, but when they change to
Legacy settings to high Contrast, are unable to see a lot the content."
.
As high Contrast is a windows feature and may not affect colour in Legacy, I
sent instructions to change colours in both Legacy 7 & 8. There seems to be
more choice in 8.
Is this the way to go or are there any other suggestions, please?

Regards
Judy

Re: [LegacyUG] Clooz

2015-04-21 Thread Judy Dewey
And Joe and Rich will personally answer your emails! They figured out why I
couldn't run it on my XP machine: an XP file that was needed to run Clooz
was corrupted on that old machine. I had other problems with that computer,
plus XP was no longer supported, so I bought a new computer. As I told Ana,
I just haven't had time to get Clooz installed on the new one. I look
forward to when I can.

Re: [LegacyUG] Clooz

2015-04-21 Thread Judy Dewey
Ana-

It might seem labor intensive, but you would do essentially the same thing
linking a document to each person in Legacy.

Instead of going back and doing all those you have gathered, you could
start with the next source you find, enter it into Clooz and link it to the
individuals. You can import your ancestors into Clooz from Legacy so you
don't have to enter them both places.

I have to admit it's been a while since I've worked in Clooz. I teach
family history online and consequently have little time to do my own. I
have Clooz on an older Windows XP machine which is missing a crucial file.
XP is corrupted on that machine and won't run Clooz. I recently purchased a
new PC and haven't had time (teaching interferes!) to install Clooz on the
new computer.

I think Clooz can be especially helpful when trying to get through brick
walls. You're looking at the sources from a different angle and just might
find that "clue" you need.

Re: [LegacyUG] Clooz

2015-04-21 Thread Judy Dewey
Clooz is a document-based program, rather than the usual lineage-linked
program like Legacy. You extract all the information from a document and
enter it into Clooz. People are tied to documents in Clooz, rather than
documents being tied to individuals as they are in Legacy.

The name "Clooz" comes from the clues you can find when going from the
document to the person.

For many years I wondered why my grandfather enlisted in the army in
Oklahoma instead of California where I knew he had lived with his family.
Entering information from census returns and other documents into Clooz
solved the mystery. He was living with his aunt in Oklahoma when he reached
eighteen and could enlist.

It's amazing what you can learn using Clooz. The fact it interfaces with
Legacy means you don't have to enter the information twice.

As another example, census returns may have several related families living
near each other. If you use that census return as a source in Legacy, you
link it to each individual. If you use that same census return in Clooz,
you link each individual to the census and see in one place all your
ancestors who were enumerated in that census. It may not sound like it from
this description, but Clooz gives you a totally different view of your
ancestors.

I found several of my ancestors in a city directory that included the small
town where they lived. I used that source in Legacy to place each ancestor
in that town in that year. Ten years from now I probably won't remember
they were all in that one source. Using Clooz I can quickly see all those
ancestors linked to that source.

As mentioned in one of the replies, it's a great document management
program, but it is so much more!

Hi Judy

The extra comment from Michele would be what you are looking for. The ability
to ‘save’ and ‘load’ report parameters. This feature allows you to set up a
particular report format and save it with a unique file name as you wish. With
the load feature, you would be able to load up the same choices at a later
date, and if wondering what the report was to include, would allow you to go
thru the various setting/choices of that report settings. At any time you
wanted to review them.

I use this feature a lot myself for the variety of reports I make for the many
relatives. Some settings I have are set for a ‘default’ type of report I would
want, others I can use as a ‘template’ and make changes as I would like for a
one time report. If you don’t save the changes to a report, no changes made.
Call back up the original parameter file and ‘that’ report default settings are
reloaded.

Exactly what Larry said :)

One added thing. You can save your report settings AND you can even save
multiple sets of report settings. The way you name these sets of settings will
give you a clue as to what the settings are.

Hi Judy,

AFAIK, there is no way to do that currently. You might want to submit a
suggestion for that feature from the Legacy home tab.

The only way I can think of would be to take screenshots of each page of your
settings and save them into OneNote, Evernote or a pdf file.

[LegacyUG] Master source template for Wikipedia

2014-10-23 Thread Judy Dewey
Which template in the Legacy SourceWriter do I use to create a master
source for Wikipedia (or any other similar online book/resource)? I've
tried the Book option but citing an article from Wikipedia is more like
citing a chapter in a book. I can't find a template for that, either. The
cite needs to be one where the author of the individual article is unknown.

According to Elizabeth Shown Mills, the cite should look like this:

"Article title," Wikimedia Foundation, inc., *Wikipedia* (www.wikipedia.org :
2014), specific item.

The only template I can find would require that I create a new master
source for every article in Wikipedia that I use. That's not a workable
solution. I would have many, many master sources. I want just one.

Thank you!

2014-08-27 Thread Judy Weber
Are there plans to issue an updated set of the Vol. 2 training videos
which is focused on the new Legacy 8 version of the genealogy program? I
notice these CDs have some titles for topics that I would like to know more

[LegacyUG] failure to print most recent generation in descendants book report

2014-05-07 Thread Judy Weber
I have obviously gone wrong somewhere and checked or unchecked the box I
need to get my descendants book report to print, as a separate generation,
the most recent generation of my family line. Some time ago it printed the
sixth generation just fine. Now it stops with the fifth generation. Why? I
am not using Legacy 8. I am using the version just before it, 7 something.

[LegacyUG] multiple people and data lost switching family file for 7.5 to 8.0

2013-12-15 Thread Judy Hogel
I downloaded the Legacy 8.0 version earlier this week and started working with
it today. I have noted multiple instances of people and data that was entered
into my family file in 7.5 that is not showing up in 8.0. - marriages,
spouses, obituaries, sources. I know the data was entered into Legacy before I
made the switch to 8.0 because I always put a notation on my hard copy of the
report/source when I enter it into Legacy. Has anyone else run into this and
found a fix?

[LegacyUG] descendant book report

2013-11-13 Thread Judy Weber
I have been experimenting with the descendant book report feature of Legacy.
I would like to eventually print a descendant book with multiple starting
points. It looks like this program will do that. But I have experienced a
glitch. It will accept three of my ancestors' MRIN, but for four of them it
states that each is missing from this file and it will skip them. Not what I
was expecting nor is it what I want. Each of the so-called missing MRIN
numbers is included in the name list and the marriage list and each
individual shows up on the screen. Why can I not get them to be included in
the multiple starting points descendant book report?

What you want is not possible in Legacy without distorting the biological
links. Those children are not biological descendants of the starting person so
they cannot be included in a Descendant Report for him/her.

You could link those children of the other spouse to the person who is a direct
descendant and then they will appear but with your explanation I am not sure
which "family" they should be linked to as children. Once they are linked to
the descendant person you can change the parent child relationship (is the
descendant a step parent? did they adopt the
children?) to clarify why they are "children".

FW: [LegacyUG] print other spouse also in Descendants book

2013-09-23 Thread Judy Weber
I have checked Other Spouses on the Include tab of Report Options. It does not
give me everyone I want in my book report. I think what I need is a spot to
check that says print other spouses of spouse. What I want to include is
technically not a descendant of the individual I've chosen to make the report
for, but the second spouse of the wife who bore this individual's children.
This individual died as a young adult and the wife remarried. This second
husband to her was, in reality, the only father these children knew, therefore
he plays an important part in the family. How can I get his information to
print as part of his wife's first husband's family in a descendant book report?
This really isn't an unusual family circumstance. I should be able to get all
the family players printed out for the whole family picture.

Re: [LegacyUG] Same gender marriage???

2013-08-16 Thread Judy Wardlaw

Unfortunately when File Maintenance, Check/Repair is run following the
Access work around as Jim suggests, the Gender reverts back to the original
setting.

BNH

Another alternative to Jim's, not using Access. In this case when you run
File Maintenance, Chech/Repair husband and wife are replaced by Male/Male
or Female/Female and does not revert back. These are my notes from my report
at a past LUG (Melbourne Australia) meeting re same sex partners in Legacy.

Enter both partners in male and female positions in Family View.
You now need to change one partner’s gender, for instance the one designated
Female that you want to change to Male.
Click the marriage information bar for the pair and remove “replace wife’s
married name with husband’s surname”.
Go to Wording Options and replace Husband and Wife on the first line (Family
View) for Male and Male (or Female and Female). Then override the middle
section of the next line that reads “married “ with “has (or had) a
partner”.
If you need to cover a second relationship insert “next had a relationship
with” instead of “next married”.
At the bottom substitute “Partner” and “Partnership” for “Spouse”
and
“Marriage”. Make sure you click Save.
We found we needed to insert Partnership in the location field for the word
to appear as Partnership instead of Marriage Information in the Family View
but is better to leave it out for Ancestor report. Unfortunately partnership
will appear in your Location List and has to be ignored!

Certainly not a perfect solution. To prevent “she/he” creeping in instead of
“he/she” for some reports and charts, edit the event sentence definitions to
use [FirstName] instead of [He/She], that would get rid of some of the
problems - or use Sentence Override
so sentences for others are not affected. This addition was supplied by
Cathy in Western Australia. She usually uses [FirstHeShe] in Event Sentence
Definitions so that the First Name alternates with the pronoun in reports.
Note also in a Family Chart you still get Husband and Wife – not Partners.
However, the Descendant Chart seems to work and the Family View is
acceptable.

Legacy won't let you do a same sex marriage or partnership. This may change
in a future version of Legacy, but version 8.0. There is a work-around.
Before you start, backup the family file. The first steps are exactly what
you do when entering a straight couple. The change in sex is made in
Microsoft Access.

After adding the couple in Legacy (one will be male the other female), make
note of their RIN numbers and close the program. Next open the file in
Microsoft Access. Here are the steps:

1. Start MS Access.
2. Click on File and select Open.
3. Type *.fdb in the File name field at the bottom of the window and press
Enter on the keyboard. Access will now see all files with a .fdb extension.
4. Browse to the directory where the family file is saved and open it.
Change the gender of one of the partners:
5. Open the table named tblIR.
6. The IDIR field holds the RIN numbers. Use these to find an individual.
7. The Surname and GivenName fields are self-explanatory.
8. The Gender field holds the sex of the individual: Male = "0" and Female
= "1".
9. Change the gender to be the same as his or her partner.
10. Save the file and close Microsoft Access

Jim

As posted on the aus-legacy website, this is what I have done.

Click the marriage information bar for the pair and remove “replace wife’s

If you need to cover a second relationship insert “next had a relationship

At the bottom substitute “Partner” and “Partnership” for “Spouse” and

I found I needed to insert Partnership in the location field for the word to

Certainly not a perfect solution. For some reports and charts you will find
that “she” creeps in instead of “he” so you would need to do a preview and
check. Cathy suggested that you substituted in the override in Event
sentences, [[first name]] instead of he/she.

Also in a Family Chart you still get Husband and Wife – not Partners. However,
the Descendant Chart seems to work and the Family View is acceptable.

Today I learnt of a distant relative who was in a legal registered civil
relationship with a person of the same sex. I then started to look how
this could be entered into Legacy. What I've read, and I would like
members to confirm this, is that Legacy 7.5 is not capable of handling
this sort of relationship. Further, if I am to understand correctly, it
is against the policy of the software publishers to allow Legacy to be
record for such relationships or gender changes.

I would be most concerned if this is a policy decision and not just a
technical problem. As in genealogy we record the records as they are and
our own personal views and prejudices must override this.

Some time ago, I found in the parish register, my great aunt who
baptised her two illegitimate children who were born 12 years apart. I
was horrified to see that the vicar had recorded occupation as, "A
harlot", because this was official records I still recorded it as an
occupation and put some notes alongside.

I am hoping that some members can give me some reassurance and also how
I can work around entering this relationship into legacy.

... When a country adopted the Gregorian Calendar and when the year start
date changed may be different for other countries but Legacy uses double
dating based on the English changes. We do allow you to specify the
start date for double dating...

My problem is that if you have two or more different countries in your
database, you can only set the double dating to one of them. I have many
Scottish as well as English and Irish ancestors. Scotland made the change in
1599, England in 1752. So my Scottish dates between January and March before
1752 show double dating if I set it to the English system. I have now just
turned all double dating off!

[LegacyUG] Detail fields of 1940 census

2012-04-03 Thread Judy Hogel

When I was entering information into Legacy Source Writer details page for a
1940 census, I noticed that Legacy had kept the fields of '"dwelling," and
family." However, the 1940 census uses "house number", no. of household in
order of visit'" and "home owned/rented." Which would you suggest to be used
for "dwelling," the number on the census for "house number", or "no. of
household in order of visit?'"

Yes. It has been very helpful...especially with the 1860 Census, which
lists only the individual, but not the family, in Family Search.

As Geoff suggested something which doesn't work, it sounds as though it
*should* work but is bugged. Try submitting a Bug Report to the
programmers and see if they accept it or say that the result you are
getting is what is intended ... in which case, you could follow up with
a Feature Request!

However, your suggestions do not help. The problem is that I have 2
different change over dates for double dating (England and Scotland). If I
turn off double dating and enter 3 Jan 1721/22., It becomes 3 Jan 1722.. If
I set double dating to 2500 as suggested by Alan, all dates between Jan &
March are double dated . If I set it to 1600, I cannot enter a double date
for my English records. between 1600 and 1752 as they revert to a single
year as before..

The topic of double dating is covered in Mastering Legacy: Names, Dates &
Places.

Geoff's suggestion was not to select double dating preference when you
select options>customize.

You entered your date as 3 Jan 1721/1722, instead enter 3 Jan 1721/22.
That should do it.

I had a play with converting a Descendant Book to HTML and then to Word and
agree that it gave a better result. The pictures can be moved, word wrapped and
resized as before. However the Title page and Indexes are not produced. You can
produce a Table of Contents but not a Name or Location index.
Judy
Actually, if you produce an html, you can copy, import into WORD, and have
much better results than using RTF.

Many thanks Sherry.

Sherry/ sent on May 16, 2011 9:52 AM
Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] connecting a couple together?

Well that's a bummer! Here are the instructions as she posted them:

Entering Same-Sex Partnerships in Legacy

Before you start, back up the family file. The first steps are
exactly what you do when entering a straight couple. Legacy won't let
you do a same sex marriage or partnership, so the change in sex is
made in Microsoft Access.

After adding the couple in Legacy (one will be male the other female),
make note of their RIN numbers and close the program. Next change the
family file extension, and then open the file in Microsoft Access.
Here are the steps:

1. Rename the Legacy family file to replace the .FDB extension with
the .MDB extension.
2. Open Access.
3. On the File menu, click Open.
4. Click a shortcut in the left side of the Open dialog box, or in
the Look in box, click the drive or folder that contains the family
file.
5. Double-click the family file.

Change the gender of one of the partners:

1. Open the table named tblIR.
2. The IDIR field holds the RIN numbers. Use these to find an individual.
3. The Surname and GivenName fields are self-explanatory.
4. The Gender field holds the sex of the individual: Male = "0” and
Female = "1".
5. Change the gender to be the same as his or her partner.
6. Save the file and close Microsoft Access.

Check the same-sex partnership in Legacy.

1. Rename the family file back to the .FDB extension.
2. Open the family file in Legacy.
3. Check the gender of each partner in his or her individual
information window.
4. Running Check and Repair in Legacy does not change the gender back
to the partner’s opposite. It only lists it as a problem in the Error
Log. Just ignore it.

Limitations of This Process

As with any “work around” where a process must be designed to
accomplish an action the software is programmed to disallow, there are
limitations to making a change of gender in your Legacy database. Here
is what has been reported by users:

* Clicking on Edit and selecting “Swap Husband and Wife” will change
the gender of one of the same-sex partners. Don’t do it unless you
want to go back into MS Access and change the family file again.

* Relationships — Relationship names shown in Family View and on the
Relationship Report for one of the same-sex partners may be wrong.
Relationships are built from one starting person, called "Self" and
are set by clicking Tools and selecting “Set Relationships.”

* Reports — Some reports work fine with the changes to gender. Both
Family Group and Pedigree reports work fine, providing information
about both members of a relationship. Descendant, Individual,
Timeline, and apparently some book reports do not include information
about the spouse.

* Chronology View — This feature acts oddly. In one quick test, the
partner record did not include the relationship or information about
the spouse. When switched to the other partner, the relationship and
spouse were present.

* Changing Views — Switching from Chronology View to Family View can
result in a same sex partner appearing without his or her partner and
a grayed out Spouse button that indicates no spouse. This happens when
a partner in Chronology View” does not include the relationship or
information about the spouse.

* Back Arrow — When the above problem results in a same sex partner
appearing without his or her partner and a grayed out Spouse button
that indicates no spouse, the Back button (blue arrow in the upper
left area of the main Legacy screen) doesn’t work. This indicates a
“History List” problem.

* There may be other Legacy problems that haven’t been discovered yet.

Legacy Add-Ons (Programs that directly read the Legacy Family File)

* Genelines for Legacy — Excludes spouse and children resulting from
changing genders in the Legacy database.

* Legacy Charting Companion Excludes spouse and children resulting
from changing genders in the Legacy database.

* TreeDraw Legacy — Excludes spouse and children resulting from
changing genders in the Legacy database.

* Not every add-on program has been tested. There may be problems with
other add-on programs that haven’t been discovered yet.

Sherry

[LegacyUG] Event Field

2011-02-26 Thread Judy
Good Morning,
I am new to the list and have a simple question that I just can not find the
answer to. At one time my family report printed out the events toward the end
of the report. I changed it somehow to print the husbands events before listing
the wife, and her events before listing the children. Would love to have it
print out with the entire family then the events, but how to change it back . I
think I clicked every field in the family report option with no luck.
Thanks
Judy K.

Re: [LegacyUG] Updating Word Document from Legacy

2010-09-09 Thread Judy Wardlaw
Ron
Unfortunately the new sources came from an added Introduction and were given
numbers starting at 1. The main text then started again at 1 and, short of
manually changing them, I don't think it can be done (about 100 source
numbers,). Perhaps my distant memory is failing and I didn't add extra
sources then. A complete Word document will adjust source numbers where
required and obviously the sources coming over from Legacy/rtf are not
formatted in the same way ie are not still hyperlinked to the text.
Thanks for your interest

Judy,

..to be honest I am suprised
that WORD has, in the past, worked any differently.

.I cannot see how Word can give a new source an appropriate number -
ie the next in line, so a
number after the last reference needs to be used. when that has been done,
why cannot you just merge the two into one by deleting whtever severates the
two lists?

I take it that you are adding the new references as superscript hyperlinks
and puting the Source Details at the end of the Legacy Sources, with the
appropriate anchor?

Judy,

I'm not sure I understand your question, as I haven't tried to change
endnotes exported from Legacy for a long time, but are you exporting to rtf
with linked or unlinked citations? See RTF Citation Style in Legacy Help
for more info. (It may not be responsive to your problem, but wanted to

I will check that again Connie. However, I may not have added new sources or
changed them around in the (very distant) past and so hadn't come up against
the problem before. They may not be able to be edited and added to.

Yes, they are in the preview in Legacy and they go over into Word but do not
act like sources should in Word.
The problem is in the Word file produced from the Legacy file. At the end of
the Word document, I get 2 sets of source citations. ie the first from the
Legacy file. New citations added later to the Word file do not get added to
this list. They go into a second separate Source Citation list and work as
you would expect in any word file (there is a hyperlink between text and
citation). But you cannot link to the relevant source citation from the main
text that has come through from Legacy which I am sure you could in the
past.
Sorry, I don't know that I am explaining myself clearly.

In the past, I have converted books and reports from the Publication Centre
to .rtf and thence Word (.doc files). The source numbers changed
automatically as I cleaned up the document and added other sources. Now the
new added sources are recorded in an independent Source Citation List and
the old Citation List is not linked to the document at all. Does Legacy not
take over the formatting and linking as before.

Hi all,
I have 450 persons with cemetery events. All of these show up on the
problems report as an event after death, and I am looking for a way to
globally exclude them. I don't _think_ I want to turn off the checking

Does anyone have an idea on how to accomplish this?

Do others use the cemetery event? Is there a better way to enter this

Q.E.D. is an acronym of the Latin phrase quod erat demonstrandum, which
means "that which was to be demonstrated". The phrase is traditionally
placed in its abbreviated form at the end of a mathematical proof or

in the setting-out, has been exactly restated as the conclusion of the
demonstration

I can concur with what John has been trying to say.

a) Start with an empty file
b) Marriage Defaults are - well, the defaults
c) Add a person
d) Add a child

At this point because there is no spouse, the Wording Options in the
marriage for Unknown & Jane DOE is 'married someone'.

Also, the word 'Unknown' has been added as a spouse, because I have the
'Word for Blank Records' set that way. If I change it, the 'Unknown'
goes away, but the 'married someone' stays.

e) Add a spouse

In the marriage, the 'Wording Options' still says 'married someone'

Change the order of entry so that you have

a) Person
b) Spouse
c) Child

In the marriage, the 'Wording Options' says 'married'

Judy:

I use roughly the same method as you, but with a slight difference. I
transcribe the listing for the entire family in the Details and then attach
that source to each member of the family. It's the same amount of typing,
and avoids the problem of having to create what is essentially a different
source citation for each individual. I also like being able to see the
whole family group listed as a unit in the Details rather than just the
information for an isolated individual.

Thanks Ron.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but I can live with it. I consider
myself a splitter, so if I have a source say - 1880 Federal Population
Census of Michigan (which never changes) I can select it from my Master
Source list, and use it as a specific source for (say in one case, the head
of the household), adding the county, Township, page and date to the source
detail and save it to the clip board. I then like to paste the clipboard
source to each family member, adding the "comments/text" for each member of
the family in that given census enumeration i.e. age, gender, relationship
and occupation. In theory, I thought the clipboard source should maintain
its integrity and not change (the blank) text/comments field I originally
pasted to it. Oh well, I can live with it. Thanks for your input.

Judy

Judy,

I haven't. As far as I know it has always worked like this, and to be honest
I prefer it. Often when adding a comment I will wish to use it again, for
example if I use a child's birth certificate to establish the parents I will
use it for both the father and mother.

I know it is there, so it isn't a big deal to remember that I must delete
the comment before reusing. I admit to forgetting now and again, but I
consider that to be my problem and not the program's, and I guess I would
get more annoyed by repeatably having to put something into that section
because the program has deleted it. BTW. I have always thought of those
additional sections as part of the Detail.

I look at the the Master Source as being something which will be absolutely
the same for all users of that Master Source ie. something which will
*never* be changed whereas everything else which relates to an individual,
or only a specific number of individuals, I consider to be the Detail.

Whilst I am at it, and as an example, let's consider censuses, which
currently are the subject of another thread. I am a lumper so my Master
Source contains nothing other than (say) 1891 Census England + census
reference, with (say) Ancestry as the Repository (and it annoys me that the
Repository is no longer part of the Detail). Everything else which I wish to
include is in the Detail (including the Comments etc.). Works perfectly,
even if I have to create a new Master Source should I use Findmypast! Shame
on you Legacy .

Ron~

A question regarding your comment pertaining to copying a source, with
specific details to the clipboard. I have found the clipbaord useful for
copying the source to multiple individuals, with one exception. After
pasting the clipboard source to an individual, if I alter the text/comments
section of the source, for a specific individual in his/her source screen
(without altering the details of the source), the alteration for the
specific individual is copied back to the clipboard (after using it twice).
It is quite irritating to have the clipboard source automatically modified
each time. Any thoughts as to how to add specific text/comments for an
individual WITHOUT having those specifics added to the clipboard?

Thanks

Judy

One thing which hasn't been mention is that if a person with the Master
Source and Detail which you require already exists, by going to that person
in Family View Clicking the Books Icon, selecting the Event to which the
Source applies it can all be copied onto the Source Clipboard by using the
Copy Icon on the bottom left of that screen. It can then be pasted, altering
the detail if required, to any other individual.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing Treatment for Obituaries

2010-04-05 Thread Judy
Doris~

I find it very helpful to use the name of the newspaper as the Master
Source, with the city and state of publication under "Publication Facts".
Yes. I have many newspapers in my master source list, but the sources and
references print cleanly and I can easily search each title to see whose
obituaries came from an individual newspaper. I can also tag "newspaper" as
the source type and see all of the obituaries I've researched. Can you
offer a suggestion to this avowed splitter why you would want to reduce the
number of Master Sources? To me, they show diligent research.

Judy

Hi all,

I am trying to "clean" up and possibly reduce the number of master sources.
Currently, when I am lucky enough to find an obituary (say from
Genealogybank.com) I am saving it as a "Newspapers" source by itself called
Obituary: Name of Deceased, Year of Death. This method, although easy to
find by individual's name is creating way too many sources to scroll
through. Not all obituaries are from the same state, same newspaper, etc. so
I don't know the best way to group them as one master source, and then
allowing me to use the detail screen to personalize it for each individual.

Can anyone give me suggestions as to how you might be handling this? I
appreciate the help.
Thanks!
Doris

Sherry, no I haven't tried file maintenance, although I have rebooted, etc.
I had changed about 100 people, so maybe the odds were in your favor.

Re: [LegacyUG] Mixed up ppl after changing AKA's/Richard

2010-02-28 Thread Judy
Richard, actually what I was doing most of the time was putting a person's
nickname or alternate first name in the AKA box. It was an individual thing.
When, say, Elizabeth Smith's name is highlighted in the name list, you will
see a box on the right for editing her information. Let's say she was also
known as "Lizzie" Smith. Then I would click on the AKA button and fill in
the required fields in the popup, save it and then go on to the next name.

Somehow or other in that process, people got misplaced or replaced with
someone else.

[LegacyUG] family file location problem

2010-02-25 Thread Judy Hogel

I am having difficulty with locating my family files that have been saved. I
believe I did something incorrectly when I first installed my Legacy program
and started using it or when I made changes in trying to find my family files.
I’ve read through all of the Help menu items as well as the Legacy Users Guide
and nothing seems to address my problem. I am hoping that someone who is
somewhat of an expert in how and where the family files created with Legacy
should be stored on my computer might be able to help me out of my difficulty.
If you could tell me what your file path reads in the following instances, I
think I might be able to figure out what I’ve done wrong.

Under Help menu-General Information, Family File Information,
What does your file information read for – Family File Path?
What does your file information read for – Legacy Path?

Under Customize-Locations
What does your default location of family files read?
What does your default location for picture files read? ___

Thank you in advance for any assistance you might be able to provide.

About a week or so ago there were some discussions about how to enter a name
for children that probably died early without any name being given. On a
related note, I thought I’d pass along this little tidbit I came across
yesterday from a 1900 census image. I found the family that I was looking
for and there was the youngest child still with no name. However, he was
already 11 months old! Talk about parents that couldn’t make up their minds!

I am not surprised that you are confused. All I produced was a direct line
descendant chart with siblings from one earliest male ancestor. I would need to
repeat it for the other male ancestor surnames if I was interested in them.It
is not a complete chart but a series of charts. I thought that Dawn was
interested in those with the same surnames.

I use Charting and my help file comes up fine.
To check for updates click on "Tips & Updates" (the last item on the

As regards the chart you want
In Legacy tag all ancestors on an unused tag (Family View.> Edit > Tag
  records) .
Then on the second screen Check Direct line Ancestors
Also if you want them, check "Include other spouses" and "spouses of

Then go to File > Export to > Legacy File, Give it a name and then check
"all records with an individual tag of " your tag number.
Use this file to produce your chart.

I realised what I did. I made a Descendant chart of the earliest ancestor
with the particular surname ( Dawn I think, was wanting ancestors and
siblings with same surname). You still need to make the new file from tagged
entries as mentioned before and use that. You would need to do it for each
name that she was following.
Sorry to be confusing.

Oh yes, I know of those. Use them CONSTANTLY. Don't know how any
computer operator wouldn't use them :0
But regarding legacy, I doubt this would work for multiple tabs. In

also want to copy the text in the "detail information" tab, and then
somehow paste them onto a different master source.

I have a programme called Clipmate that Iallows you to copy and store as
many items as you like and then retrieve them. I use it all the time.

I had the same thing happen with a couple of other templates in Deluxe7

You did! The problem being that there are numerous templates with the word
newspaper in them. Supply the exact information from the Source Template
Index
and you might get some assistance.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Master Source Text

2009-12-31 Thread Brent and Judy Schultz
I just added a census record, I went to the person Cyril Vesper and in
assigned Source screen, clicked add a New Source under name event, I clicked
on the option to use source writer.

Step 1 - clicked following boxes
Census
United States
Federal Census Reports
1880 Population Schedule
Online Census

Step 2 - I only title 1880 Oak Grove, Dodge County, Wisconsin Census - Cyril
Vesper 249/250 then added State (Wisconsin) and County (Dodge). All the
other fields are either filled in by the program or I left blank.
Then I clicked on the text tab.
In the text box I entered in the census data:

Cyrel Vesper, w, m, 48, married, farmer, VT, Mass, VT; Emma Vesper, w,
f, 36, wife, married, keeps house, N. York, N. York, N. York; Lester Vesper,
w, m, 12, son, single, at school, Wisc, VT, N. York; Susan Vesper, w, f, 7,
dau., single, at school, Wisc, VT, N. York, Herbert Vesper, w, m, 8, son,
single, at home, Wisc, Vt; N. York; Martin Hyland, w, f, 11, Mrs. daughter,
at school, Wis, Maine, N. York; Nettie Fraun, w, f, 18, servant, single,
works in house, Wisc, VT, N. York.

Then I clicked save.

Step 3 - I didn't add a thing. I just clicked save.

Went back into the person's information and clicked on source button. The
Assigned Source Screen for Cyril Vesper was displayed. I highlighted the
source 1880 Oak Grove, Dodge County, Wisconsin Census- Cyril Vesper 249/259.
Under the Master text is the above text data of Cyril Vesper and his family.

I clicked edit source. Then I clicked on the tab Text/Comments and it is
empty.

Does this help?

Judy,

We understand that you are using the Source Writer, but within this there
are a few hundred templates/master sources, all have a name. The answer
which we need to know is to the question "Which of these templates are you
having problems with?".

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Master Source Text

2009-12-31 Thread Brent and Judy Schultz
I'm testing out the free version of Legacy 7, version 7.0.0.109 build date 1
Sept 2009 on a vista operating system on HP Pavilion dv6000 lap top. I built
the data with gedcom file from Family Tree Builder program and then was
adding in information on other people manually. I am not having a problem
with any of the information transferred through gedcom. I noticed the
problem when I began to type in manually a few newspaper or census
information using the source writer option. So the problem I having is with
those sources created using the source writer. The ones with a bullet in
front of them.

I have entered in four or five obituaries and several census records this
way. I use the source writer to create the master source and click on master
source text tab and enter in the information from the obituary or census
record into the master source text box. Once the master source was created
then I save it. Then for the next event for a certain person, I will select
the newly created master source for any event it pertains to that person.
Such as birth, death, parent relationship or residence information. Usually
an obituary will deal with about 15 to 20 people with an average of two or
three events per person. I will select this master source for each event
about each person.

I didn't notice the problem right away because I actually I don't lose what
I typed in right away because I can see it under a person's assignment
source screen under a box labeled Output: Master Text. Since I seen it
displayed on this screen, there was no reason to go back and check in the
master source to see if I could find the information under the master source
text tab and box. Why would I check for something I can see? It's there in
the assigned person's screen under Output: master source text. Then I
noticed a misspelled word in one of bits on information and I thought I
would simply go out into the master source text and change that one word. I
hit the button edit master source from the person's assigned source screen
and when I went to view the text to change the word, there is nothing in the
master source text box to edit. It's empty. This has happened on every
single master source that I created with the source writer option. Maybe I
thought I looking in the wrong place, so I saved the master source and the
text disappeared. That means I was in the right place because I just
overwrote my information with the blank box in the master source text box.
So I learned that if I save that master source box when I find it empty, it
overwrites the master source with nothing and I lose what I typed. But if I
cancel out of the master source and then go back to the person's assigned
source screen under the output: master text the information that I typed in
the first time is still there. I can't edit it which is a problem for me. I
don't have a problem as long as I never want to change a single word or
letter or number in what I first typed. But since I have a tendency to
switch letters when I type, I'm going to need to go and fix misspelled words
and incorrect numbers and letters. I don't always notice the misspelled
words the first time.

So that is where I sit right now. I can see what I typed into the master
text through the person's assigned source screen and the information stays
there as long as I don't go back in and edit the master source. I can't
figure out why I can't edit the information. I have several master sources
were a flipped letters and incorrect date when my fingers went over to far.
So right now, some of my data is no good because it is wrong and I can't
correct it. I could remove them and redo every source I typed in through the
past two or three weeks and never use the source writer option again but I
really don't want to do this. It would be a lot of work.

Thanks, Judy

I have not run into this problem. Tell us your Operating System and build
number for Legacy 7. Sometimes this makes a big difference. This is a great
group - someone will have an answer for you!
