Millennia Corporation, a leader in family history software, today announced the release of Legacy Family Tree 8.0. The new release contains dozens of significant new features and enhancements, including migration mapping, instant duplicate checking, origins and migration reports, potential problem alerts, and shared events. In one software package, Legacy Family Tree 8.0 provides tools to help users record their family's history, organize their pictures, perform their research, and share their findings. Legacy Family Tree 8.0 continues to raise the bar of family history software, said David Berdan, president of Millennia Corporation. Its new source quality tool, source labels, citations on Pedigree Charts and shared events give serious researchers the tools they need, while the new reports, charts, and family statistics get the entire family excited about their history. The following new and updated features add to Legacy's list of robust capabilities: ·*Origins Report* - See where you came from and the percentage of blood you have from your countries of origin with the new Origins Report. ·*Migration Report *- See how far and wide a person's descendants spread out in the world with the new Migration Report. ·*Migration Mapping* - Legacy animates the ancestor's movement through time. Watch how they migrated from place to place. View their migration in street, aerial, or 3D modes. Hover over the balloon to see what happened in each location. ·*Instant Duplicate Checking* - As you are adding new individuals to your tree, Legacy instantly checks to see if perhaps they are already in your family file, helping you avoid inadvertently adding duplicates. ·*Potential Problem Alerts and Gaps* - Typos and accidental misinterpretation of data are now a thing of the past. The warning symbol is displayed immediately next to info that contains a potential problem. Unusual gaps of time are detected that you may have not previously noticed (like too many years between the births of the children). ·*Shared Events* - Save time and avoid errors by sharing an event amongst all the individuals who participated in the event. You can specify each person's role in the event. ·*Family Bow Tie Chart* - Displays the ancestors of both the husband and wife, as well as their children. ·*Descendant Chart* - Now available in left-to-right formatting. ·*Source Quality* - Now record the quality (original vs derivative, primary vs secondary, etc., direct vs indirect) of each source as you attempt to prove your conclusions. ·*Source Labels* - Now print Source Labels to attach to the top of your documents. You will never again lose the citation when making a photocopy for someone else. ·*Source Clipboard* - The Source Clipboard has been expanded to load up to five different citations that can be assigned at the click of a button. ·*Pedigree Citations* - Add source citations to your Pedigree Charts, and attach the complete bibliography. ·*FamilySearch Integration* - Share, discuss, download and interact with FamilySearch's Family Tree (optional). ·*Wall Charts* - Duplicate lines can now be suppressed, saving room for more photographs and captions. ·*Chronology View* - Now view the parent's, grandparent's, children's, and grandchildren's vital events in your ancestor's timeline. ·*User Interface* - Enjoy Legacy's modernized look-and-feel, new color schemes, and new ribbon menu bar. Add two additional custom buttons on the new My Toolbar. ·*Tagging* - View up to 9 tags at once. Advanced Tagging now shows the counts of each tag. ·
Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting problem
Cathy - Note you can only 'Save' the chart in the Legacy chart format, but must' Export' it to get it into another format - like pdf. Re: [LegacyUG] Produce a Tree Chart/Report with specific events
Kathy - You can get an idea from the examples on the VCF forum of the types of charts that RM and TMG create - more freeform and customizable than Legacy - but for your purposes, RM is the better choice. TMG has 37 options for the display of each event in the chart (whether to include the memo, use abbreviations, etc.), making for more of a learning curve. In RM you get a list of events and select the ones you want. Virginia On Fri, Oct 25, 2013 at 9:28 PM, Kathy Thompson kmthoms...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks Virginia, appreciate the input. TMG - which uses the same underlying charting software as TMG, though with more editing options - allows all events up to 9 data lines. Both have free trial versions if you want to GEDCOM your data over to make a chart. TMG has a forum dedicated to charts (the Visual ChartForm forum) with many examples. Maybe Legacy v8 charting will have more flexibility in the allowable data; the preview of Legacy v8 indicated that there will be some new features in the charting module. There is an option once you are in Legacy Charting to add a few more details about basic (birth, marriage, death) events (not custom events), but I could not get it to work. Re: [LegacyUG] Handling large charts
Dave - Can you download the driver for that specific plotter, make it your default printer, and print the file to that plotter instead of a PDF file? Your friend could then use that file to print the chart. An alternative used in several of the other genealogy software programs for large charts is to use one of the free virtual PDF printers like CutePDF, Bullzip, PDF995. First you create your chart, make a note of the dimensions, save the chart (as a Legacy chart file) and exit the program. You then make the virtual PDF printer your default printer in Printers and Devices and set the paper size there before opening Legacy and printing the chart to that printer. CutePDF may have the largest paper size. Re: [LegacyUG] Handling large charts
Ron - JPG is extremely poor quality for chart output and not recommended. Photos and text will be grainy - particularly noticeable in a large chart. The genealogy software native chart output is best quality; second is PDF to a virtual printer or to a plotter. If Dave has the plotter driver, he can format his chart for that printer and then 'print' the chart to that printer (first making it his default printer) and take the resultant file to the friend for printing. There are detailed instructions 'To print to a plotter' in the second message in this FTM chart thread: http://boards.ancestrylibrary.com/thread.aspx?mv=flatm=4072p=topics.software.famtreemaker Virginia On Sun, May 26, 2013 at 12:39 PM, Ron Ferguson ronfergy@tiscali.co.uk wrote: PDFs have a size limitation which has nothing to do with Legacy. Re: [LegacyUG] Establishing a Word Processor
Jerry - That is a Windows fix, associating a file extension with a particular program. Rightclick on any .rtf file from Legacy, click on Properties / Opens with / Change button. Select WPX5 as the default. That will be a permanent fix for all future .rtf files. Re: [LegacyUG] Establishing a Word Processor
As Jay said: From the Menu OptionsCustomize Launch Word Processor, you have the correct path for Legacy to find the exe file for your WordPerfect?? You will want to navigate to the .exe file in Windows Explorer to get the full path. The path will be similar (mine is Win7) to the one for WPX11 in the screenshot below (click on Full Size at the top to view). http://screencast.com/t/uoxDJFuVM This works for me. After you save your report file to .rtf, Legacy will ask if you want to open your word processor and it does just that. I'd be interested to know how well the rtf translates in WPx5. Re: [LegacyUG] charts and adopted children
Laverne - There is an example of a chart showing both the biological family and the adopted family here: http://www.familytreemagazine.com/upload/images/pdf/adoptiontree.pdf This is similar in appearance to a bow-tie chart in Legacy. You could create one side from your Legacy bio data and then manually edit the text in the other side for the adopted data. Color the sides differently, with a legend explaining which color is bio and which is adopted. Re: [LegacyUG] How to join family files in Legacy
Wendy - I'll be the dissenting voice. I have 4 separate projects - my parents and my husband's parents. The families lived in different parts of the country and there is no overlap. Our children's records are with my husband's surname. I've been doing this for about 20 years and never had a problem. Early on I merged them on a trial basis and disliked it intensely. When I am working on a family I go into their environment - where they lived and their local sources. Projects are small and easy to manage. For me there is no downside. Most genealogists disagree, so it is bucking tradition. Do what you are comfortable with; you're the one who will put in the time and effort entering the data. For Windows7: 1 - In Start - Search, type eventvwr (that is an abbreviation and is correct to enter). 2 - Go to Windows log / Application tab 3. Look in the leftmost column for critical errors - like the red exclamation point in this screenshot example (click on Full Size to view the screenshot): http://screencast.com/t/YjyVpRgMer 4. Re: [LegacyUG] Font control
John - In the righthand column of the Event Report window is an option/button to Change Fonts. I went down the list of items to Include and changed every font to Liberation Mono. I believe this is just a more contemporary version of a monospaced font than Courier. The font change seems to affect only the Event report. When you are choosing a font, at the bottom of the window is a note whether it is an Open Type font which will be used on both your printer and your screen - or a screen font in which case the closest matching printer font will be used for printing. Courier is a screen font; Courier New is an Open Type font. I think you will want an Open Type font rather than a screen font for your report. John - On the top menu: Options / Customize / Fonts / Screen fonts. Or Ctrl-Z takes you directly to Customize. Click on Change to change the font; if you just want to change the size, go to the right side of that window where you have a minimum and maximum font size when resizing the window.
