Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Automated Sorting

2013-09-09 Thread Bernd Hornung
Hurry up with the release before my wife finds the pennies I have
squirreled away for this and spends them on something really unneeded.

In your example, were the marriages concurrent, like some of the Mormon
families in my families? I haven't tried a Timeline on such a family,
but wonder if the children would be listed in order of their birth, with
reference to the correct mother/wife?

Thanks, Ron. Are Crown Dependencies categorically different
from a Protectorate? Or can I use the analogy?

Cheryl

Cheryl,

Apologies for the slight delay in coming back to you - I have been away for
a few days.

As I understand it a Protectorate is rather different in that the
relationship between the state and the mother country is much closer, with
the mother country exercising some degree of control over the state. Whereas
with the Crown Dependencies GB only takes responsibility for their defence,
or to be more general their foreign policy. For example, the CI and IoM are
not constituent states of the European Community, but are associated through
their relationship with the UK.

Since Legacy is an international program (I have seen that there are
translations of the program), Legacy will definitely want to make sure
that this feature has the correct information as far as countries,
states, provinces, etc. goes - so that the feature is actually useful
(groupings are correct) and because I know that the issue of countries
engenders strong feelings based on history and, of course, Legacy will
need to make provision for the changing political geography - past and
present.

To think all this amazing information came about from my one small comment that

Thanks, Ron. Are Crown Dependencies categorically different
from a Protectorate? Or can I use the analogy?

Cheryl,

They are Crown Dependencies ( btw it includes all the channel Isles, not
just Jersey and Guernsey). Basically they run their own affairs and Britain
agrees to look after their defensive needs.

I hadn't put an adverse interpretation on what you posted, rather I was
trying to emphasise that Legacy had a pretty good record in this respect, a
lot better than we see with the misinformation from Ancestry to mention but
one of many other programs.

Ron - don't get me wrong and I don't think I said this feature was
bad. I get how hard it is to make these programs work for everyone and
that there are issues relating to translations, wording based on
language, keyboards, etc. I also think there are easy things to do and
more difficult ones.

When you introduce a feature like this one and want to "sell it" it
does help to either have the countries correct or explain why you
choose the terms you did. I also wonder if we are going to be able to
add or modify this feature (similar to timelines and Event/Facts
sentence structure) because there are probably lots of countries that
no longer exist or changed depending on the date (I have several in my
own family file). In light of the history of Eastern Europe this could
prove interesting.

This is the downside of teasers - we might see a feature with a short
description and wonder about the whys & hows or how far along the
feature is. I suppose this forum becomes testers to a certain extent
when we comment upon or point out errors or that something is unclear
or wonder how useful it might be. I have found all the comments here
in response to features shown and hoped for features not yet mentioned
interesting and thoughtful.

As to problems with the global location database used in Legacy, what
are you referring to?

If you're hoping and relying on the Geo-database to do this for you. Don't hold
your breath. Yes, it might be historically accurate for some parts of the
States, but for England & Wales it does not take into account the various county
boundary changes, nor the historic names for some countries e.g North Britain.

Actually, Legacy has been reasonably good when it comes to the names of

read/write the Cyrillic alphabet. Where there are problems eg. with the

I’m been a little overwhelmed at the number of material coming across from the
Legacy Users group, but the Euler diagram was most helpful. Thank you.

Great Britain is an island on which are three equal and sovereign countries of
Scotland, Wales, and England. It is not a country, it is an island. Great
Britain is the largest of the British Isles.

Ireland is the second largest of the British Isles, on which are two separate

Randy,

Thanks for that, I had not seen it before. I particularly like the way in which
it clearly shows that the Isle of Man and the Channel Isles are not part of the

FW: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Origins and Migration Reports

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Origins and Migration
Reports

Great Britain is an island on which are three equal and sovereign countries of
Scotland, Wales, and England. It is not a country, it is an island. Great
Britain is the largest of the British Isles.

Ireland is the second largest of the British Isles, on which are two separate
countries, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland comprises 4 equal and
sovereign countries: Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and England.

The Republic of Ireland, although located on one of the British Isles, is
neither a part of Great Britain nor of the United Kingdom.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - SORTING

2013-08-06 Thread Lee Bruch
I suspect that version 8 is much too close to release to add new ideas at this
time. Hopefully some of these ideas already have been included. But hopefully
no-one will be disappointed if any of these last-minute ideas aren’t included.

As with any new release, an outpouring of ideas usually accompanies the
release. Perfect!!! This is the very best time to start gathering thoughts for
a future version. I hope Millennia is noting these ideas … and we should all
make sure to post our ideas to Millennia on their “Suggest a new feature” form
mentioned below.

Sorting by birth date or death date would be awesome (I have several books of
transcribed wills and it would be great to see all the possible tree members
who may be in each book instead of just plodding through person by person and
having to go back to each book multiple times).

You can submit a suggestion to Millennia by selecting "Suggest a new feature"
from the Support box in the lower right side of the Legacy Home page.

I agree, being able to sort by other fields would be excellent - being able to
sort by birth or death year or by tag number would be great for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Origins and Migration Reports

2013-08-06 Thread Robert57P_gmail
This is a GREAT feature! I remember as a kid how fun it was to say I
was "1/4 German, 1/4 Norwegian, . . . 1/16 whatever, etc")!

Does it use the BIRTH LOCATION field for this?

A suggestion - if it breaks it down to local levels (state, or even
county), it should still list the country. This would avoid the
"confusion" of South Africa appearing to be a state. For example:
USA/Minnesota
USA/Oregon
South Africa

Or maybe (I don't really like this one):
Minnesota (USA)
Oregon (USA)
South Africa

Or maybe even make the breakdown into columns (e-mail formatting is
gonna mess this example up):
COUNTRYSTATECOUNTY
======
USAMinnesota Hennepin
USAOregonnot specified
South AfricaNBANBA
* NBA = No Breakdown Available at this time
* Not Specified = information not in database

Looking forward to the upgrade!

Bob

MY WISH is that where in the Index tab, you can with just one click sort by

2013-08-05 Thread John Bernacki
What about breakdowns for old locations? Genealogists are supposed record the
names of locations as they were at the time of the event. I have ancestors from
the Republic of Venice, before the Kingdom of Italy came into existence. Also
from the Duchy of Lorraine before it became a province of France, and from
places in Germany before it existed with that name.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Sources

2013-07-30 Thread Angela Gabbard
However, Elizabeth Shown Mills did discuss her new process map at NGS this
year and it was in her syllabus and of course Thomas Jones published Mastering
Genealogical Proof this year as well. Jones' book details the use of these new
categories and I was informed that they will be included in ESM's newest
edition of Evidence whenever it gets published. It would be nice to have
these new categories included from the get-go since they have been published
and accepted in the genealogical community.

In Evidence by Elizabeth Shown Mills, our source for the analysis feature there
are only the two source categories "Original sources—material in its first
oral or recorded form. Examples:
the testimony of someone relating events that he or she personally experienced
or witnessed; or an original document created by a party with firsthand
knowledge of the information recorded.

Derivative sources—material produced by copying an original or manipulating
its content; e.g., abstracts, compilations, databases, extracts, transcripts,
translations, and authored works such as historical monographs or family
histories."

In her categories authored works are just a subset of derivative.

Likewise she does not use Undetermined for Information either.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Sources

2013-07-30 Thread Ward Walker
Brian, you are right that the period currently after the word 'situation'
should be moved to after the last parenthesis, but that is not what I meant
at all. I was referring to the first closing parenthesis, not the second
one. The word 'knowledge' should be outside of the parenthetical expression.

Actually Ward, the error is that there is no period following the last
close parenthesis. Etc. is an abbreviation which ends in a period so
there should be a second period outside the close parenthesis to end the
sentence. I have submitted a bug report to have the issue fixed.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Potential Problem Alerts and "Gaps of Unusual Size"

2013-07-22 Thread Jay 1FamilyTree
Geoff,

I am so glad Legacy is adding some of these features. But I have been using
Genealogica Grafica's (http://www.genealogicagrafica.nl/ ) great Gedcom
Checker, which finds this issue and many more for years now, so I dont
expect that Legacy will find many new ones, but who knows!

Now can you also add a check for Cemetery Locations in the Birth, Marriage
or Death Place Fields (vs. the Burial Place field)
Well, maybe not marriages, I've heard some people do get married at a
Cemeterystrange

Thanks
Jay

2013-06-17 Thread Syble Glasscock
All of us have our own way of doing things, but I have a line that has been
proven from two DNA results that line up with who is our 5th great grandfather,
the problem is that only one of his sons  is likely to be our ancestor
according to a hired professional researcher, we know his name, but little is
known about him, so I have "James possibly" and then have the documentation in
the Events.  I don't recall using this on any other person, but I feel by
adding his name with possibly, maybe someday someone might have additional
information on him and contact me.

2013-06-16 Thread Virginia Blakelock
Ron -

Designating someone as a candidate for a relationship is common
practice in gen research - and having the ability to include that info
in the software in a standardized format can be helpful to the serious
genealogist. Where I have seen that option in gen software, there is
little chance of confusion or misunderstanding.

Depending upon the level of user interest of course, certainly a valid
suggestion.

2013-06-16 Thread Ron Ferguson
Jane,

I thought that I had made it clear that my reservation was to changes being
made to Legacy which may encourage others, less careful than yourself, to
create “possible” links which may over time, and perhaps after transcription by
others, become “facts”. This sort of thing can and does happen, after all one
only has to look at Ancestry public trees and the old IGI and many many other
on-line “resources” to see the process in action.

Very, very few of us actually know what will happen to our work after we are no
longer here, something about which one becomes more aware of with age.

Ron,

Far be it from me to suggest a less than pristine data set. I do not plan to
publish mine but use it primarily as a research tool to help me add to it.
However, if the prospective parent is clearly labeled as such, as I suggested
in the first place, it should not sully up the work by suggesting that it was
gospel truth, but only a candidate as a parent. If the person's possible
connection is given in notes, or events, or some other tactic, how is it
different from being clearly labeled a candidate?.

If the intention is to publish the tree then the link would have to be
rendered private or invisible, but even so there is a risk of a mistake or

I am not suggesting that anybody else should take my viewpoint, but I for one

After trying several reports, it looks like that goes part way to solving the
problem, although it doesn't allow for multiple possibilities for father
identity. In addition, it would be nice if those people whose line is not
proven (the prospective father, his wife, ancestors, and other children, could
all be in a different color print, signifying that they are only "possible"
relatives. Perhaps I am asking for too much here.

I also wish this would show up in the child's listing on Family View (as
an option).  You'd think that going to OPTIONS, CUSTOMIZE, VIEW, SHOW STATUS
ON FAMILY VIEW would cause this to happen, but it doesn't.  And I think I ran
into a report or two where I wish this could optionally show up - but I could
be wrong about that.

Do not get RELATIONSHIP TO xxx mixed up with CHILD STATUS that is also on

Jane,

I would almost suggest that there as as many ways of referring to possible
parents/relatives as there are users of Legacy. Personally, I would never link
persons who might possibly be related, no matter what device might be used to
indicate that the link is only a possibility.

If the intention is to publish the tree then the link would have to be rendered
private or invisible, but even so there is a risk of a mistake or someone
seeing the raw data of deciding the link is certain without definitive evidence.

I am not suggesting that anybody else should take my viewpoint, but I for one
would be reluctant to see similar practices as described incorporated into the
program. There are more than enough rubbish trees published without additional
encouragement being given.

Do not get RELATIONSHIP TO xxx mixed up with CHILD STATUS that is also on this

STATUS field, but that ended up not working well because it implied that

This is the problem with these 'selective' highlights. Because the screen-shots
don't conform to what people normally use, they suspect the worst. This comes
from a failure to understand the development process.

People: An evolving product like Legacy, will not generally remove features from
the software. Features are added. Existing features are modified to improve
appearance or performance. This is done in order to maintain backwards
compatibility and to avoid the sort of questions currently being asked, based on
the scantiest pieces of evidence.

options, and other surprises

I like the below suggestion - obvious in all reports.  But that POSSIBLE would
show up for ALL children and it may only be one child that you are unsure of.
Another option:
In family view, right click on ANY child
Select CHILDREN'S SETTINGS
Hi-lite the appropriate child
Under RELATIONSHIP TO FATHER (or MOTHER), you can create your own options -
click the down arrow and a new window pops up
Click ADD
Put in POSSIBLE PARENTÂ (side note - I preface my own manual entries with a
period (.Possible Parent), or you could make them all CAPS or some such other
indicator.  This reminds me that it is not a pre-canned item.  Since I added
it some wordings and such may need tweaking.)

I really wish Legacy allowed us the OPTION of having this box come up on every
child add (just like the Marriage window auto-pops up when adding a spouse).
This way we could remember to set if it is a "blood-line" (Biological) child or
some other relationship.

I also wish this would show up in the child's listing on Family View (as an
option).  You'd think that going to OPTIONS, CUSTOMIZE, VIEW, SHOW STATUS ON
FAMILY VIEW would cause this to happen, but it doesn't.  And I think I ran
into a report or two where I wish this could optionally show up - but I could
be wrong about that.

Do not get RELATIONSHIP TO xxx mixed up with CHILD STATUS that is also on this
screen.  Use CHILD STATUS for something that pertains ONLY to the child (twin,
still-born, etc).  (I originally was putting "guardianship" in the CHILD
STATUS field, but that ended up not working well because it implied that
relationship for both parents.)

have an option to print or not print of course, so that a print out might say:

Candidates for the father of Joe Jones are:
      Jim Jones (RIN#), born 1744, etc., etc.Â
Jerry Jones (RIN)#, died 1682 in Portugal, etc. etc.
Jeffrey Jones, (RIN#)  living next to Joe in the 1800 census.

I realize that it is possible to manually type in the above information,
but when I haven't worked on a person for a while, it would be helpful for
research to review the possibilities. It would seem (to someone who knows
nothing whatever about programming and development) that links to several
persons who MAY be parents could be done. Â Something I have needed for a long,
long, time.

Thanks for listening.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Q/A, new Tagging options, and other surprises

2013-06-15 Thread Robert57P_gmail
I like the below suggestion - obvious in all reports. But that POSSIBLE
would show up for ALL children and it may only be one child that you are
unsure of. Another option:
In family view, right click on ANY child
Select CHILDREN'S SETTINGS
Hi-lite the appropriate child
Under RELATIONSHIP TO FATHER (or MOTHER), you can create your own
options - click the down arrow and a new window pops up
Click ADD
Put in POSSIBLE PARENT (side note - I preface my own manual entries
with a period (.Possible Parent), or you could make them all CAPS or
some such other indicator. This reminds me that it is not a pre-canned
item. Since I added it some wordings and such may need tweaking.)

I really wish Legacy allowed us the OPTION of having this box come up on
every child add (just like the Marriage window auto-pops up when adding
a spouse). This way we could remember to set if it is a "blood-line"
(Biological) child or some other relationship.

I also wish this would show up in the child's listing on Family View (as
an option). You'd think that going to OPTIONS, CUSTOMIZE, VIEW, SHOW
STATUS ON FAMILY VIEW would cause this to happen, but it doesn't. And I
think I ran into a report or two where I wish this could optionally show
up - but I could be wrong about that.

Do not get RELATIONSHIP TO xxx mixed up with CHILD STATUS that is also
on this screen. Use CHILD STATUS for something that pertains ONLY to
the child (twin, still-born, etc). (I originally was putting
"guardianship" in the CHILD STATUS field, but that ended up not working
well because it implied that relationship for both parents.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Q/A, new Tagging options, and other surprises

2013-06-15 Thread Jane Sarles
Geoff,

Excited to see the new version and it's looking super. If I may make a
suggestion- someday I should like to see an enhancement that would solve
many problems for me: I have several ancestors for whom I have
POSSIBILITIES as their parent - but nothing set in stone. Is it not
possible to have a category of "parent possibility" or some such name,
which would link to an ancestor SEVERAL people as prospective fathers or
mothers? It would need to have an option to print or not print of course,
so that a print out might say:

Candidates for the father of Joe Jones are:

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed

2013-06-13 Thread M Sonnier
Thank you Geoff for listening to our request.

Since Geoff mentioned that a suggestion from this group has already been
implemented, I have one request.  Please have only one file for picture
captions.  If you write the caption to Picture List, it will be written in
notes, but if you write the caption to Attached pictures, it will write to the
database.  Please get rid of this double option and write to the database.
Secondly, I would like to see everyone who is attached to the picture, similar
to Family Tree Maker in Media Detail View.

Thanks

Morris Sonnier
