Hi Mike,

Linda Greethurst mentioned my name in an earlier comment to your original
post. You can create a website within Legacy as Gene Young stated.

The five web pages’ styles:

Ancestor: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Webs/ancestor/index.htm

Descendant: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Webs/descendant/index.htm

Pedigree: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Webs/pedigree/index.htm

Family: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Webs/family/index.htm

Individual: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Webs/individual/index.htm

If you need help with that, let me know and I'll be happy to assist or
point you in the right direction. I have a handout I created for our user
group I would be happy to share with anyone interested. This "website" does
not have to be posted online but could be handed out on some sort of media
(CDs or flash drives) to family members. Keep in mind that newer laptops
and tablets do not have CD drives and/or input for a flash drive.

John Cardinal's GedSite has also been mentioned and I am a big supporter of
this program. I feel I can have a more customizable site that looks nicer.
Just my humble opinion. My site created using GedSite can be found at
http://loghryledger.site/up/index.htm.

Ad for
Philip's suggestion of creating a PowerPoint I have no experience or
opinion on. Sounds like a lot of extra work on your part.

One thing to consider with a website is the ability to quickly update it
with new information, i.e., you finally proved who your great-grandfather's
parents were. If you provide family members a CD, they will have to wait
until the next family reunion where you hand out new CDs or until you burn
CDs and pay to mail them to everyone. Are you getting the idea of the
benefits of posting your data online? John Cardinal even mentioned a
private web site.

One thing to keep in mind though, is I STRONGLY encourage you not to
include information on any living individuals.

You can get free website by uploading GED to tribalpages.com.   They offer
option to get CDs of the web site.   Web site is free,  need to payfor CDs.

Another possibility is to create a PowerPoint presentation... depending on
how much you have, as it can take quite a bit of time entering info as
gedcom or other is not a import option... advantage? More creativity
allowable. For dry data, a spreadsheet is use able such as excel... or
database such as access... point is, while I do not know what you have
available, be creative with what you have... Google has apps that can do,
free with chrome.. could also make a dvd, or jump drive for larger
files... with a read me instruction page... have them download the free
legacy and see that... and they can buy the program if want to see premium
stuff... could still explore the datafile and media files for pics and
videos as well as socuments...

Re: [LegacyUG] Passage Express Replacement

2018-02-09 Thread John Cardinal
Mike,

My GedSite program will make a web site from a GEDCOM exported from Legacy. The
site does not have to be published on the web; you can copy the files to a DVD
or other portable media to share with relatives.

http://www.gedsite.com

DVD instructions are here:

http://www.gedsite.com/en/publish-removable.htm

Some details about using Legacy GEDCOM files with GedSite are here:

http://www.gedsite.com/en/legacy.htm

Another way to share with family is to create a private website. That incurs a
hosting fee, but it provides some benefits:

1 - You do not have to create DVDs and distribute them.

2 - Family members whose devices do not have a DVD can still view the site.

3 - You can update the site and thus update what everyone sees without
re-distributing a DVD.

You may want to do both: publish a private site and distribute DVDs and/or USB
drives. The more ways you publish the project, the more likely it is that it
will be available in the future when someone wants to review it.

If you have any questions, let me know.

John

Re: [LegacyUG] Passage Express

2017-05-28 Thread Allen Prunty
Perhaps they will release it into the public domain. It's a shame that
when software companies are "done" with a product they just mothball
it. For someone, Passage Express was a love and passion when they
designed it, Chances are that it did not return enough revenue to
justify its continued development. In this case the greatest gift that
a software company could do would be to release it in to the Public
Domain. If the product is something that people truly would use someone
will step up and continue development on it, even if it's on a hobby basis.

I do not know why it was discontinued but I suspect that Millennia did
not have the programmer resources to maintain Passage Express and fix

I tried Passage Express.

All it did was produce a duplicate copy of my database on my hard disk, which
I then had a hard time getting rid of.

Hello Kris.

John Cardinal wrote SecondSite, a program to Convert TMG into a HTML
file. Produces a wonderful Internet Site, I really liked it. I used
TMG for years, when my daughter and my sister-in-law became interested
in genealogy I changed to Legacy, an easier program to learn. Since
the demise of TMG I started using Legacy as my only program. John, at
the request of many TMG users produced a program that converts GedCom
files into HTML (converted SecondSite). GedSite is now available at
http://www.gedsite.com
Had had a quick look at it and appears very good, same as Secondsite.
The above site also has a description and how to use section. The cost
is $25.00 USD.

Hope this helps.

Best Wishes.

Yes, I'm taking the easy way out, but I've done SO much digging the
past couple of weeks trying to figure things out, I'm not going to
feel guilty about it. :-)

I had a vague memory about being able to create a self-contained,
auto-run CD to share with family. Couldn't remember enough about it to
know what to look for in the help files, but some Googling leads me to
believe the Passage Express add-on is what I was looking for.

Unfortunately, the links to those pages on the Legacy site are 404. I
*did* find Passage Express in the store.

I'm guessing the free add-on it no longer available -- yup, I'm quick!
Is there an alternative? I'm wanting to create something like this for
family members and it must be completely "I Know Nothing About
Computers" fool proof.

Thanks!

Hi, Sherry!

Thanks for the quick response! I had no trouble finding and adding the
PE icon to My Toolbar, the window pops up to install the free version,
but then the web page I'm redirected to throws a 404 error:

http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/PassageExpressFreeVersion.asp

FYI -- Creating web pages and burning them to a CD is a last resort
option, but I'd really like to avoid that. :-)

Thanks!

Kris, you can add the icon for PE on the My Toolbar ribbon - click on the
little block in the lower right corner of the My Toolbar ribbon and drag
the icon to the spot you'd like to have it.

If you need to install PE, it will tell you when you click on the icon to
start creating the CD.

[LegacyUG] Passage Express not responding to Legacy File Button on produced CD

2017-02-10 Thread baxwalker

Hi Everyone,

I've just been trying to produce a CD using the Passage Express add-on in
Legacy.

Everything appears to go well but when I try to use the CD the Legacy File
button doesn't launch my Tree - it's just dead.

I've also followed a YouTube tutorial and I seem to be doing everything
correct.

Any suggestions?

John

While my intent is not to bash either Passage Express (nor Legacy), I wish you

Larry,
On the download page it is very important that you download Passage Express
from the link at the top of the page and not the link at the bottom. The
link at the top is the free Legacy version of PE but the link at the bottom
is for a time-limited demo version of the Deluxe version. These are
different.

RE: [LegacyUG] Passage express

2015-05-12 Thread Larry Edralin

I am sure I downloaded the free version. It prompts me just fine to
upgrade. Two main issues are when finished downloading a family file it
goes straight to production and skips (also has no access to) the production
editor. I thought the free version had this capability. The second is when
I try to go to any support site by clicking on redirectors it just goes
blank or to a non-loadable page.

I appreciate your quick response.

[LegacyUG] Passage express

2015-05-12 Thread Jen Kirk
Michele, I am also interested in this problem. I can create the file
but cannot save it to any format. It says I need to upgrade in order to
save. I do have Legacy 8 latest Deluxe edition. I downloaded from the link at
the top (click here to download Passage Express Free Version.
This file is 64 MB.) but got the 21-day time-limited version.

Thanks,
Jennifer

Larry, On the download page it is very important that you download Passage
Express from the link at the top of the page and not the link at the bottom.
The link at the top is the free Legacy version of PE but the link at the bottom
is for a time-limited demo version of the Deluxe version. These are
different.Michele

Ron,

Legacy has bought out Passage Express so we are doing the technical support for
the program. Passage Express has a history of conflicting with other programs
but this is usually easily solved by simply reinstalling the program. Before
you reinstall, reboot your computer and make sure all unnecessary Windows
programs are closed.

Nancy,

It is a program that will allow you to put together multimedia presentations
that you can then burn onto CDs and pass out to your family. You can read
more about it here http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/PassageExpressFreeVersion.asp

We also have a Knowledge Base article that is loaded with links to video
tutorial and print tutorials

http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00979

There is a free version and there is a upgraded paid version. You can access
Passage Express from within Legacy itself. There will be an icon on the

Ron,

I have Passage Express Deluxe installed and just tried it with the
PE/Create CD icon on the Legacy toolbar - everything worked fine and
Passage Express started up normally. I also have both programs
installed in different directories (Windows 7 64bit computer).

I would contact the authors of Passage Express directly and see if they

I managed to d/l install, w/o a visible issue. Then I ran
it and created a file *I* called Largent TEST and saved it
to my Largent directory on C:/

So. What did PE call the file that'll open in something? :)
NOT Largent TEST or any variation thereof because a
search of C:/ doesn't find such a file.

(I'll know better next time to create an EMPTY subdir for
the output! But, I never burn a CD/DVD without vetting the
content, not since I thought I'd included in a printed
report several hundred pages long an extremely disparaging
comment about someone -- intended as a reminder to me that
the info provided was at best 25% likely to be accurate.)

Just click on the Create CD icon on the My Toolbar tab (if it's not visible
click on the very small icon Customize the Toolbar - lower right on the My
Toolbar menu - and add the Create CD icon to the toolbar).
If Passage Express isn't installed you get the option to install it.

[LegacyUG] Passage Express Deluxe

2013-11-07 Thread Diane Chenault-Parke
I purchased the deluxe edition of Passage Express yesterday so that I could
make a cd/dvd of the my entire file to give it to a family member who does
not have Legacy.

I started from within Legacy made a disc that would open and run on my
computer because I have Legacy on my computer. When I put the dvd into my
laptop (windows7) my husband's desktop (windows 8) the dvd did nothing.
Trying to open it with Windows Explorer would not open the dvd. I could see
that the files were there, but it would not open.

Does anyone know how to make a cd or dvd of their entire file using Passage
Express Deluxe?

Thank you,

Re: [LegacyUG] Passage Express and Legacy Charting removal

2012-06-15 Thread elizabeth
Well, it looks like I am in trouble from the numerous replies I
received :-(

Since I am an old lady on Soc Sec, a new computer or $150 external hard
drive just doesn't fit in, so I am going to have to just save photos to
CD's and hope they last. No other choice at this point (but a good
suggestion to give my kids for my Christmas present...LOL).

I certainly appreciate the information I received from this list. I have a
much better understanding of what my computer is like.

1.47GB left on your computer means you're already past the point where
you could even defrag it. You don't have enough room to turn around in
 basically.

 There's a point at which it's time to upgrade. 40GB hard-drives, which
it sounds like you have, went out of a style around 2005 I think.

If you just can't, you can buy an external hard-drive and keep your
photos on that. Although I would recommend having at least two of them.

But, if at all possible, get yourself a new computer. And some external
hard-drives for back up. Removing 20MB of Passage Express and Legacy
Charting is not going to help you.

Legacy Charting is a folder under Legacy and when I right click it says
the Size is 18.2MB. I have never used this either.

But I need the space. I'm trying to remove anything that I don't use or

of genealogy-related material along with all the files for my husband's
web site, kids pictures, etc...none of which I ever want to remove
  or lose.

My computer uses Windows XP. When I right-click my C Drive and look at
the pie chart for my computer it shows that I have used 34.7GB and
have 1.47GB of free space left. That doesn't seem like much space left
to use for all these photo albums.

Whenever I want to remove a program from my computer I have to search or
email the producer of the product and find out how to remove it manually
since I cannot use the Add/Remove feature.

Elizabeth,

How big is the external HD? Over here (England) you can get a reasonably sized
one for not much more than half that price. When I hit the same problem with a
40GB HD on my XP, I bought a 250GB external drive for around $80 – it was a
long time ago so not absolutely sure about the price, but it provided more than
enough memory until I upgraded the PC.

Since I am an old lady on Soc Sec, a new computer or $150 external

1.47GB left on your computer means you're already past the point where
you could even defrag it. You don't have enough room to turn around in
 basically.

 There's a point at which it's time to upgrade. 40GB hard-drives, which
it sounds like you have, went out of a style around 2005 I think.

If you just can't, you can buy an external hard-drive and keep your
photos on that. Although I would recommend having at least two of
 them.

But, if at all possible, get yourself a new computer. And some

Off topic, so I won't go into details, but your computer is soon going
to run into difficulties with so little free space. Removing those 2
programs is not going to give you much more and you will need plenty if
you are planning on adding lots of photographs. I suggest you have
another internal drive fitted OR add an external drive OR replace your
existing drive with a MUCH bigger one.

[LegacyUG] Passage Express and Windows 7

2012-05-20 Thread Roy Ferguson
I just bought Passage Express through my Legaqcy 7.5 Deluxe program
and everything went fine, right through to creation of an auto-run
presentation. But after closing PE, I cannot get back to it: Passage
Express is already runnng, I am informed whenever I try to re-open
it. Well, I see no sign that it is running.

I have Windows 7, and the successful installation and iniitial use of
PE inicates there should be no compatability problem. In any case I
checked PE Properties and was surprised to see that Windows 7 is not
on the drop-down list of programs suitable for opening PE; my previous
program, XP-SP3, is there, but that is history and there's no looking
back.

Can anyone understand what is happening?

W7 is running with Open Office and not Windows Office, and just fine
as far as I can determine.

Have you tried opening Task Manager to see if PE *is* running? If it
is, you can close it from there and then should be able to open it
normally. (Might be an idea to re-start your computer, too, just in
case a few 0s and 1s have got themselves jumbled.)

Sorry, but I do not know, mine works fine with Windows XP SP3. If you are
using a different o/s then perhaps someone else can try it. You may like to
try FileFile MaintenanceCheck/Repair to see if that works. Otherwise I can
only suggest that uninstalling/reinstalling may resolve the problem.

I can sympathize with your frustration, however, since 1996 I have used or
tried many Genealogy programs (with the exception of PAF) and all of them,
bar none, have their Pro's, Con's, Disappointment's, and frustrations,
however, I can honestly say that I have not, yet, found a better Genealogy

and the additional benefit of the Legacy User Group. For what its worth, I
think you might be disappointed in what you find available in other

Angelique,

I understand how you feel, but a check/repair only takes a few minutes, and
may just resolve the problem. My suggestion for reinstallation was intended
for trying if that didn't work. If it is an installation problem, that can
happen with any software, especially if all other programs have not been
shut down.

Re: [LegacyUG] Passage Express Button Not Working

2010-03-27 Thread Lionel Carter
I know it is too late now but as there are two programs involved -
Legacy and Passage Express (and the cd burning software) how can you be
sure the fault is Legacies?
If Legacy runs and is writing files to disk then it seems to me that
it's Passage that is not responding, not Legacy.
My first shot would be to check that Passage is looking in the right
folders.
My second would be to check that it imports other program's files on
your pc.
As others find it works ok there must be a hitch with the setup on your pc.
A third possibility could be that Passage is not interacting with the
dvd drive and/or its associated software which could cause a 'null'
response.

The fault is reminiscent of Windows Media Player and the like that won't
play a particular file type because a driver, codec or some addon is
missing.
