Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021. No current record.

2015-09-03 Thread Cathy Pinner

Pete,

Support is really the place to sort out this persistent type of problem.

But a thought - how are you creating the new file? Are you importing
lists from another file or is it really a clean new file that is
immediately crashing? If you are importing lists, one of them may be the
problem.

Your computer date setting shouldn't be a problem. Mine is also set to
DD-MM- - also the Australian standard. I use Custom Events and lots
of my own Sentence Definitions, so I don't think that in itself is the
issue either.

Speedy entry can cause a freeze or crash of Legacy - but I haven't seen
the 3021 error for a long time.

I would suggest submitting the problem

2015-06-10 Thread Elizabeth Verchio

Since v8 I've had on and off problems
with a Run-time error which would cause the program to close.
I reported the problem several times over the past 7 months with
pretty much the same response/results as you have had, Cathy.
Finally, this week, Jairmie in Tech support gave me the steps to
completely remove Legacy software and all the files that also need
to be deleted, and then reload the program.  I finished that
yesterday at 5:08 PM - not another error, crash, freeze since.
True time will tell.  On Monday, I couldn't work more than 4
minutes without the error and crash.  I spend nearly 9 hours a day
working with Legacy Family Tree Software and have over 33,600
individuals with lots of photos, documentation, etc..  I use a lot
of the features, but and aware there are many I have not even
  touched.  Anyway,
If you still have the email with your ticket number, you might
want to click the link "View this Ticket Online" and write another
comment about the continuing problem, what you have done and how
  it continues to occur.
As we all will agree, Legacy Family Software is very complicated
and for the price we get a lot of functionality.
Legacy Family Software has a great development and support team
and I totally appreciate them and all they do to continue to
improve the product as well as to support us users.
So, hopefully something here helps, and good luck,

I edit them as I mainly have UK censuses and put the head of

That wouldn't cause the error though.

I can't recall if you said the error keeps returning if you

Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021. No current record.

2015-06-10 Thread Forefathers Research
Hello Sherry.

I've been unwell for the last week, so not doing a great deal of work in
Legacy, but have just had the crash again, when entering a census entry as
an event. See screen print here:
 Legacy crash 2015-06-10.JPG

As always, it occurred when pressing tab to move from the "Date" field to
the "Place" field.

I ran File Maintenance. This is the error log produced, which is always the
same:

 Legacy Error 2015-06-10.Log

Here is the definition of the Census event.

 Census Event.JPG

Please let me know if you see anything wrong here or if there is anything
else you would like me to do to try to help diagnose the problem.

Could it be in some way connected to the fact that I store my Legacy
database files in a folder specific to each client, rather than in Legacy's
default location?

Thanks

Pete

Take a look at your personally entered Event Sentence Definitions and
make sure they're all using the correct replaceable fields and they're
formatted in a manner like the default ones.

I don't think the sources are a problem since the error is when you're
adding or editing an event, but they could be if they're linked to the
events.

I forgot to mention that, after run File Maintenance, an error is always
reported (the first time I run File Maintenance) and that error is always:

1 event record(s) that link to a master event that does not exist

I don't think it's going to be practical for me to set up a "testbed"
environment for this, but I will give it some thought.

Some while ago, before I last reported this issue to Support, I took to
recording a video of my screen activity and have an MPEG showing this crash
occurring for me. I can make that available (via download) if anyone would
be interested to see it?

I'll try this next time the issue occurs Sherry, so probably tomorrow.

My gut feel is that you could be on the right lines, and that the problem
is likely to be connected in some way to modified or user-defined events in
some way, as:

   - that is certainly a feature I use, and other might not (which would
explain why I seem to be plagued with it and others not)
   - the crash occurs when I am using that part of the system

Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021. No current record.

2015-05-31 Thread Forefathers Research
I have had Legacy crash on me 3-4 times when I have accidentally clicked
too soon after the previous click, but that is a different issue, I
believe, and one I can live with as it occurs infrequently and (as you say)
there appears to be an obvious "trigger" for it. It doesn't give the 3021
error.

2015-05-31 Thread Forefathers Research
Hi, thanks for responding Sherry. Sorry about the attachment: point taken.

As I mentioned, it's not just one file that gives this problem: I have many
Legacy files for different projects, and any or all of them will give this
issue at some point or another.

And the size of the file does not seem to be related either. As I
mentioned, I had this issue recently within about 20 minutes of starting to
input into a new, empty file.

One thing that could be relevant, however, is that I always use the option
to import sources from a previous file when creating a new file, to avoid
the need to re-enter all my source definitions. Could that be a factor?

It is certainly the case, I think, that the problem occurs more frequently
when I am inputting an event where I myself have defined the event.

Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021. No current record.

2015-05-30 Thread Sherry/Support
Those are some good considerations, Chris.

One of the frustrating things in support is when the user reports a
problem, we get their Family File and we can't duplicate it!

I've been working with a gal who is seeing more than one child in
"bold" in the children's list when she has selected to show direct
line in bold, yet only one child is in her direct line (she's checked
relationships). Her file works perfectly on my computer and we've
deleted all the possible problem files. Go figure.

Testing on a pristine machine is a good idea but not always possible.
If he could take the file to the FHC with Legacy on their computers
and see if it works ok there, then that might be a clue as well.
Frequently, computers in the same household will have the same
programs and settings on them.

Sherry

2015-05-30 Thread Chris Seens
I am a retired programmer also and I used to use MSAccess and Visual Basic
a lot.

There are several very important questions before any possible solution to
this issue could even be considered:

What OS are you using?
What version of Windows are you using?
Do you use any Microsoft Office software on your machine and if so what
version(s) are you using?
What version of Legacy are you using?
Are you using the default settings for the Legacy family tree directories?
If not, please explain what changes you have made to these settings.

More questions will likely need to be asked once these questions are
answered. However, what I would do if possible, is to install the latest
and greatest Legacy version on a 'pristine' machine. Only Windows and
Legacy and restore your latest backup to this machine. Do you still get
this error? By doing this you remove any chance that there is some
conflicting software on your regular machine.

Have a great day,

Chris

Sorry - I should have added to *backup* the Family File (File > Backup
File) before resetting the Event Sentence Definitions to default. That
way you can restore the file with the edited Event Sentence
Definitions if resetting them doesn't help.

To reset the definitions, go to File > File Maintenance > List Cleanup
and select "Event Definitions" under "Keep/Restore Original Values

Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021. No current record.

2015-05-30 Thread Sherry/Support
Tessa,

My point was that if he edited the file in Access or changed Event
Sentence Definitions, he *could* have done something that "broke" it.

We do not recommend messing with the file in Access although many
people do. Doing a simple query for a search shouldn't be a problem,
but an update query could mess things up.

With Event Sentence Definitions, you have to be careful on how you
edit or create them, using the appropriate fields.

If done right, there should be no problem with the Event Sentence
Definitions. I'd almost recommend resetting them to defaults if he had
edited them and see if the Error 3021 continues.

RE: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021. No current record.

2015-05-30 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
It happens to me quite frequently. The good news is that you don’t lose any
data but the abrupt close of Legacy causes it to forget where it was and will
re-open to the person that was last on your previous closing of Legacy. I have
determined what makes it happen for me and how to avoid it. All it takes is a
too quick click of the mouse on the new Edit Event window that just opened
without waiting an obligatory second or two for the programming to catch up. It
only started to happen with version 8 which seems to be noticeably slower in
many calculations especially in relationship calculations and web page
creation. This error will probably never happen under the old version 7.5 but
seems to plague version 8.0 quite noticeably especially if you are so
proficient with the mouse and movement, knowledge of the layout of the new
window that is about to open, and too quick to click on a particular button in
the new window.

For me, the solution was to train my mind to count 1-2-3 while the program
catches up and then click on whatever button you want. I have what I would
consider a relatively fast processor, 2.2 GHz Dual Core, so I’m not so sure we
can blame processor speed. And while I use version 8.0 of Legacy, I still have
version 7.5 on my system just for the sake of occasionally testing something or
looking to verify just how something changed. Using the nearly exact same
database, I cannot force that error under v7.5 but I can under v8.0.

I’m not exactly sure if this is what is happening to you because you stated
that you were using the TAB key after entering some data. For me, it seems to
be merely opening the window and then too quickly clicking on a button. When I
pause on the window, then the error never happens. As a programmer you would
know what I mean when it seems as if “Garbage Collection” were occurring and my
click on a button before 2 or 3 seconds seems to catch the program by surprise.

As you stated, you’d think the Legacy programmers can trap this error but they
don’t seem interested until enough users complain. The problem is that the
error is not easily reproducible, therefore the programmers are not going to
waste any time for an error that happens to only a very few users and only
under special conditions.

That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.

I am a professional genealogist. After over 30 years working in IT as a
computer programmer, and over 25 years as an amateur family historian, I spent
6 years studying for a higher certificate in genealogy, before turning
full-time as a pro genealogist 3 years ago.

So I feel I am a fairly good position to be able to judge Legacy as a piece of
genealogy software, both as a programmer myself and as a genealogist. And I am
a big fan of Legacy: I use every day of my working life, and choose to use it
in particular because I like its Source Writer system, the ease with which I
can keep track of my sources, assign sources to events and produce reports.

But there is one aspect of Legacy which absolutely drives me barking mad and
wastes a lot of my time every day of my working life, and that is the
regularity with which Legacy crashes with the database error "Run-time error
3021. No current record." See the screen dump attached - this happened to me
just a few minutes ago. This was the eighth time this has happened to me so far
today.

Now, I know you will say "Ah. There's a fix for that". Yes, I know I am
supposed to run File Maintenance, and I have dutifully run File Maintenance,
not once but twice, every time this crash has occurred. It will then go away
for half an hour or so, then come back again.

This is not an issue with any particular Legacy file either. I run many
projects simultaneously and have at least one Legacy file for each project.
This bug affects any and all of them. Recently, I created a new empty Legacy
file from scratch for a new project, then started inputting data, and
experienced a 3021 crash within the first 20 minutes. So it's not just
something that affects big files that I've been working on for a long time,

I have reported this issue to Legacy repeatedly but do not seem to be able to
get them to acknowledge that this is a bug. The view seems to be that telling
me to run File Maintenance when it happens is acceptable. As an ex-programmer,
I simply can't agree with that. I would be able to understand it and sympathise
if they were to tell me it was a bug they couldn't find a fix for, but please
don't try to tell me this is acceptable. It is the one thing that would make me
consider adopting a different genealogy program, as it wastes so much of my
time and causes me so much annoy

2015-05-30 Thread Tessa Keough
I got this error twice a while ago, but I have not seen it recently. I do
think if Legacy allows us to add events or modify sentences then that
should not be a source of the errors (as mentioned by Sherry). Telling us
we can do something with a program and then telling us that doing it might
cause a problem does not seem to be a good system. And sometimes
coding/programming changes seem to fix one thing but bring up another
problem - that probably means a bit more testing before a revision is
released might be a good idea.

I have Googled the database error itself and it does seem to be a commonplace
Microsoft Access error (see
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-access/access-3021-error-no-current-record-found/5e37caf3-d243-41c5-904a-7d1e7c99c1e8)
which any reputable piece of software should be able to trap and handle
without crashing, i.e. forcing a restart of the program. So if the condition
itself can't be avoided, surely Legacy should be able to detect it and handle
it gracefully?

Does anyone else experience this or is it just me? If it's just me, then I
suspect I'm using features that others don't very much. To be specific, the
error occurs:

1. Only when I am adding an event.

2. Only with some event types.

3. Always when I have just input something into the date field. See screen dump
attached: I had just entered a year in the date field and pressed tab to go to
the next field.

Or is there some way to "encourage" Legacy to fix this?

Thanks

Pete

Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021. No current record.

2015-05-30 Thread Sherry/Support
First of all, I'd suggest that you read the Guidelines for the Legacy
User Group - you'll find that we ask that you don't send attachments
to the list. Many of our listers are still on dial-up or are paying by
how much broadband they use plus due to the risk of hidden malware in
attachments we ask that attachments to the list not be opened. The
link to our guidelines is at the bottom of every email to the list.

I can't remember the last time I personally saw Error 3021 when using
Legacy on any of my computers and I've been using Legacy for nearly 18
years. It's also rare that we see that error message sent to Support
and for the vast majority of the few we see, the check/repair resolves
the issue.

The one time I had it and the check/repair *didn't* resolve the
problem, I followed the second option in the Knowledge Base of
exporting to a new Family File. I don't think I've every had to
suggest the last option of exporting to a gedcom.

"3. If the above steps fails to fix the problem, export your records
into a new Legacy family file: (steps snipped)

"4. If steps 1-3 fail to fix error 3021, export your records to a
GEDCOM file and then import the GEDCOM back into Legacy. If you use
the SourceWriter to create sources, please be aware that your
SourceWriter sources will be converted to the Basic Source system so
do this step as a last resort. (steps snipped)

"5. If all else fails, your only option is restore your family file
from your backup copy."

http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00291/11/Error-Messages-Problems/Error-3021.html

I don't know what it is that's going on in your file which triggers
this error, but it's actually quite a rare occurrence. As a
programmer, you know how difficult it is to fix a "bug" that happens
very rarely and you can't duplicate.

The real question boils down to asking what it is in your Family File
that's triggering this error and since you have found the steps, that
might be a clue to the problem.

Have you ever manipulated the Family File in Access? Are the Events
ones that you've added? Have you changed the Event Sentence
Definitions?

The data entry you're doing are generally not where the Error 3021 is
seen, but most commonly seen when clicking on the Name List or
Marriage List.

Give the other steps a try and see if they resolve the problem.

Sincerely,
Sherry

[LegacyUG] Run Time Error 3021

2014-02-11 Thread Charles Apple
While clearing the Clip board for another source, I received Error 3021 and
Legacy 8 closes. Opened Source Clipboard > clicked on "Clear All" to remove
the old source. A message appeared "Are You sure that you want to clear the
Clipboard," after clicking "Yes", I receive Error 3021 and Legacy Closes. Is
anyone else receiving this error? Is this a bug?

I did find a work-a-round though, Click on the "Change Master Source" at the
top of the window, and select or add the new source.

I believe what he meant was that by you not saving the new person and new
event before you add another event you are creating the runtime error because
there is no record because you did not save the first record and event. You
should save the first event before you create another event. By not saving you
are expecting the other to be “stored” in the computer memory while you add
another, etc.

Thanks, Ron. this is exactly what I do with the 2 other family files on Legacy
that do NOT have this problem. I just re-tested and it still works, just not on
my newly-created family file. WITH sourcing thrown in, too, clipboards and all.
I even create new sources on the fly while adding a new individual.

I sent Sherry the backup so we'll see what happens. Thanks again for letting me

  Sherry,

If I have understood the initial problem correctly, then it is possible to
do as Marilyn suggests, as I have said it is a technique which I have used
many times - and am just getting ready to test again.

If you go to the Individual's Information Screen and add the Vital Events,
you can then go to the Events, without saving, and click the Add Button, now
add, say a Residence Event, then again without saving, click the Add Another
Button and add the details for, say, occupation. Then use all the Save
buttons to exit. All these details should be preserved - forgot to mention,
I use the Source and Event clipboards, as appropriate, for sourcing.

Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021

2012-04-09 Thread Marilyn Clark
OK, I can buy that I have to save the new individual before starting to add
events. However, why is there an "Add another" button on the events screen if I
cannot use it before saving that event? The "Add another" button doesn't even
display until I begin adding an event...

Anyway, this runtime happens even when I'm adding events to well-established
individuals, i.e., not just added and saved the minute before.

Oh yes, so it is! Had never consciously noticed that before, and didn't

Yes - you can add birth,bap/chr, death, bur/cremation and then add an
Event without saving the vitals and then add additional events after
saving the new Event you just added.

It looked to me like she wrote that she was addingEvents/Facts without
saving each Add Event window ("Then click on "add Event." Type
"Residence" and complete the fields. (I don't save yet) I click "Add
Another" event.") and that can't be done.

You do not need to click on the "Save" button in the Individual's
Information window after entering vitals and before adding
Events/Facts or after adding each Event/Fact

It works fine for me and she stated in her email that it works in
other files, just not this one, so there's obviously something going
on with that file that we need to take a look at.

Sherry,

I have just followed the method using the English 1911 census as I described
below with 100% success. There were some minor differences, but these should
make no difference, they never have before. 1) the family already existed,
hence: 2) to the daughter I only had to add a Residence and Occupation Event
as described below. No problem: 3) The son had a new second given name
entered, so I added this to the name field, also added Residence and
Occupation as below. All worked OK.

by saving or cancelling before you can add a second event.

Re: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021

2012-04-09 Thread R G Strong-genes
I believe what he meant was that by you not saving the new person and new event
before you add another event you are creating the runtime error because there
is no record because you did not save the first record and event. You should
save the first event before you create another event. By not saving you are
expecting the other to be “stored” in the computer memory while you add
another, etc.

Marilyn,

I do not understand Rich’s response either. The technique which you describe is
the one which I use all the time without problem. I have just come out of
hospital after a few days for a minor op. and whilst I have been following
things on my mobile I have not had access to a computer to test on my set up,
so I cannot confirm whether something has gone wrong with this Legacy procedure.

At present I am working my way through 350 emails, and when finished will test
to see if I am getting the same problem.

You make an issue as to when you save things. Until Legacy has been saved,

your data may remain 'unsaved' which means at turn off time, it may not survive
the turn off.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Run-time error 3021

I sent this problem report to the folks at Legacy today, but thought I'd pick
the brains of other users here, too. Here's what I have going on:

When adding new child, I show family screen, and R-click in the boxes below to
add a new son or daughter.
I add name, dob. and pob.(I don't save yet)
Then click on "add Event."
Type "Residence" and complete the fields. (I don't save yet)
I click "Add Another" event.
I get as far as typing 'occupation' (or any other event) and when I tab to next
field, the runtime error occurs.

Runtime error '3021 '
No current record.
OK. (Legacy closes by itself - I don't have time to click anything)

Then when I re-open Legacy and the database, and return to that record, it is
there, but only the Surname is there. No
dob or pob. The first-entered event is there. The second-entered event just
has a blank line there, and if I click it and select 'edit' I can go ahead and
enter the items in the fields and save it.

I also tried saving the new person before adding any events; then the Given
Name, dates and places are retained, but I still get the run-time 3021 when I
try to use "add another" event.

I tried doing the "add another" on an existing person (not a brand-new
addition) and I continue to get the run-time 3021 error.

I tried saving the new person before going to add new events. I added 3 events,
saving each event one-at-a-time, then finally, attempting to use the "add
Another" button, same error.

I did all your suggested fixes; the first time I did the Check/Repair an error
message came up:
"Error getting next deleted RIN. Error 3021: No Current Record. Try Again?" I
continued with the repair. I also exported to a new family file and
 the problem continues.

When I look at the Index view I count 41 individuals plus a "0" blank at the
top of the list. When I check the Gen.Info. icon it says there are 37
individuals.(I removed viewing alt names and married names on the Index, so
they are unique persons) And their RINs are all sequential, no gaps. (I forgot
to mention this to Legacy support)

I am inputting these all new, no imports. At one point I had a husband and wife
who did not belong in the tree. They had one daughter, who DID belong. I
deleted each of the husband and wife, and linked the 'loose' daughter to the
correct parents. Maybe something went askew here?

I have another Legacy db that does NOT replicate this error. So there must be
something amiss with this one. I did as the Help advice says and exported to a
new Familyfile but it still continues to crash on 3021.

I am running Vista 64x, have the .180 version, just began inputting these names
on Apr
2nd. My Windows program is pretty up to date, and since my other family files
don't experience this problem, I doubt that it's the Windows component. Help,
please!! Thanks.

Marilyn

You did not mention going to Legacy's website for a solution, but if
that didn't work I would wait for Monday to contact support again. They
do not work weekends, especially holiday weekends.
