RE: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel Report

2015-05-20 Thread Michele/Support
If the person is married, that line will appear. It looks odd because
everything else has been stripped from the report. For this to work 100% there
needs to be a new report or an option on this report.

I do not see anything on that page which defines a standard. The Article
is about the numbering system and how to convert to and from the number
to determine lineage.
I noted that the first published ahnentafel (1590) is a pedigree style
chart. The example in the article does not quote any standard for its
display method so all it adds is another possible layout of the report.

I have requested this type of report in the past. I think it would be a
good thing, if possible, to be able to select the details that one would
wish to include. For example, one could include the birth and death
dates, and/or place, even spouses name, or not, as desired. Would that
be hard to incorporated? Options are available for most of the other,

Thx, Brian - I have the book because I'm part of a study group at the Dallas
Genealogical Society (Dallas, TX). This year our focus is on writing a family
history and the book is one of several we are using. This week we are creating
genealogy reports using the various software programs that the members of the
group use. It was coincidence that an ahnentafel report came up at the same
time this discussion did.

If anyone is interested, it's a SIG called the Brown Bag Group and information
on it can be found at the DGS website:

A few questions:
1) When you say uncheck everything - do you really mean EVERYTHING in ALL
tabs?
* Options tab
* Page Layout tab - really should not matter
* Heading layout-n/a? (no check boxes)
* wording 1-n/a?
* wording 2-n/a?
* Index Options/Name Index - really should not matter?
* Index Options/Location Index - really should not matter?
* Report Options/Include
* Report Options/Format
* Report Options/Source
* Report Options/Pictures
* Title Page - n/a?, no impact

2) BEFORE changing a report this drastically, is there a way to save ALL the
current settings so I can get back to how I had it?
3) AFTER changing the report to get a true Ahnentafel report, is there a way
to save ALL the settings so I can easily get back to this Ahnentafel report in
the future?

I think for #2 #3 I can use the SAVE option in the lower right and call it
something like AncestorBook-Bob Settings 2015-05-19 and AncestorBook-Bob
Ahnentafel version, right?

But even after unchecking everything, it still seems a bit wordy as compared
to the other examples I've seen for Ahnentafel report referenced at the other
web sites.

An Ahnentafel report is the same as an Ancestor report. Legacy has it
in two forms - chart or book.

On the Report tab, go to Other Charts for the Ancestor Chart and the
Ancestor Book is on the ribbon.

Neither of these reports are what I call a traditional ahnentafel
report. Are you familiar with what that is? It is linear, without
individual details except for DOB and place, and DOD and place; individual
couple separated by generation numbering. This report is far more
condensed than that two you mentioned. Individuals are numbered, and you
double that number to find the father's number, and add one to find the
mother.

We are happy to consider suggestions for new features.

In Legacy 6.0 and later you can suggest a new feature by clicking on the
link on the Legacy Home Tab Support Section

Other users can make a suggestion here:
 http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Suggest.asp
Use the drop down list in the first box to select a category, Legacy 8.0
 or Legacy Charting.

If you have a sample report layout of your version of the traditional
ahnentafel report include that so we can see exactly what the layout you
 want is.

Here are at least two differences between your example and Gene's idea
 as he described it:
Gene mentions individual couples separated by generation numbers which
your example does not do; and
Gene does not mention including marriage information which you include
 in your layout.

Have you submitted your proposal as a suggestion?

most useful, having birth-death, if those are known. Yes, the numbers become
immense, but it is the most concise and efficient way to list hundreds /
thousands of ancestors.

A variant uses the same system, either in a chart such as your pedigree chart,
or in a report:

Generation 1
1. person

Generation 2
2. father
3. mother

Generation 3
4. father's father
5. father's mother
6. mother's father
7. mother's mother

etc.

It is easy, if one can multiply and divide, to immediately find ancestors and
descendants.

It may be possible to do in Legacy 8 by limiting the report options. I can't
use it yet because the bugs keep messing up the reports I need to produce all
the time. (I keep trying every update).

And therein lies part of the issue, you and Gene seem to have different
ideas on how the report would look. Is there a genealogical society
somewhere which has defined a standard' for this kind of
listing/report? If there is a standard we could use that for a new report.

Here are at least two differences between your example and Gene's idea
 as he described it:
Gene mentions individual couples separated by generation numbers which
your example does not do; and
Gene does not mention including marriage information which you include
 in your layout.

Have you submitted your proposal as a suggestion?

 Jane,

here is a detailed list of steps for you

Make a backup copy of your Legacy database

 Go to Jane Wells
Click on the menu bar EDIT go to TAG RECORDS
First we need to make sure that tags 1,2 and 3 are clear of any
 existing tags
 click on UNTAG radio button,
It should already say Make Changes on 1
 click on the EVERYONE button.
 Lets repeat for 2,
 click untag radio button,
you need to change the Make changes on to 2
 Click Everyone
 Lets repeat for 3
 click untag radio button,
you need to change the Make changes on to 3
 Click Everyone
Now we have cleared everyone from any 1,2 and 3 tags
Since we opened the Tag Records menu from Janes page, she should be
the person selected in the name field
If not, click the CHANGE button and select Janes name so that it shows
 in the Individual Tagging window.
 Now clock the ANCESTORS button,
a new window opens and here you select who to include; siblings,
siblings spouses etc select your needs. (do not select entire related)
 Then click OK.
It will set the tag 1 for all the persons that meet the parameters.
Close the tag window, and go to the ancestor James Hulstar.
From the menu bar EDIT go to TAG RECORDS
In the tag window, James name should be the selected person.
Change the Make Changes on TAG number to 2
Click on the descendants button, select just descendants, click OK.
 Close the Tag window
Go to the Menu bar SEARCH FIND
In the LOOK FOR select INDIVIDUAL
WHERE TO LOOK - tag 1
 How to look - EQUAL
 What to Look - TAGGED
 Select the Second Condition
 Individual
 TAG 2
 Equals
 Tagged
Then check the radio button near the bottom, Clear list before search
 Click on Create List
The SEARCH window list opens with the persons who meet the parameters,
 Click on the OPTIONS button
 Select Advanced Tagging
Make changes on needs to be changed to TAG 3
click on EVERYONE IN SEARCH LIST
now all the people you want in your report are tagged, so lets export
 them to a new file

 FILE EXPORT GEDCOM
Change the character set to UTF8
Click RECORD SELECTION and click on the radio button for records
tagged with and change the tag number to 3
NOW in your example you wanted the report to list the parents of a
spouse, so since the parents are not a DIRECT LINE between Jane and
James, we need to include them.
Select the Radio button for Export Spouses and export Parents
(siblings is optional prob wouldnt hurt to include if you have any
ancestors who married a sibling of a spouse)
 Close the record selection window
 Click on CUSTOMIZE
here the events that are in you database are listed in the right
side window under Export these items
If there are any items you do not wish to include in your report
Just scroll to the event name and click on it so that it is
 highlighted, then click on REMOVE.
Do that for all you want to exclude, then click on OK
Then click on START EXPORT and select a new name for this file.

 Open your new file
 Select Jane, select Ancestor narrative
 and BINGO,
EXACTLY what you asked for in your original message

Re: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel report example

2014-05-21 Thread Cathy Pinner
Jane,
It's possible that you don't even have tagging turned on so that the tags show
on all views.
If you don't have tag boxes on the main couple on Family View you need to go to
Option 1.5 and turn on tagging.

Then you can use advanced tagging as Jay says.

However, I think there are easier ways to get who you want in the new file.

Also, when you come to export, export to a Legacy file, not a Gedcom. This is
VITAL if you use SourceWriter sources as going via a Gedcom converts them all
to Basic Sources.

You want the direct line between two people, then you want the surrounding
relatives in the file so that they can be named as parents, spouses and
children but not have their own entry if I've understood you correctly.

1. Make sure the tag number you want to use is not used for anything else.
2. Go to the relationship calculator (Tools - Relationship) and set the left
and right persons to your starting and ending person. (if you want the siblings
of your start person, you
need to start with one of their children or tag the siblings manually before
step 6.)
3. Click the Options button and choose to tag the relationship line.
4. Close the Relationship Calculator
5. If you want to see whether the tags worked OK - go to the Name List, Search
Show all tagged x where x is the tag number you are working with.
6. Now you are ready to export.
7. File Export to Legacy File
Give the new file a name eg: Ancestor line bet x and y
Then choose on the Legacy Export options screen to export those tagged x
AND tick the boxes underneath for their spouses, parents and children.
Click the Privacy Options and set them as desired
Check Show combine options when event definitions or locations are
different.
8. Start the Export.
Click the Start to Export
Understand that although you are EXPORTING, from Legacy's point of view you
are IMPORTING into an empty file. This is why you need to check the show
combine options when event defini
tions are different. The empty file has no locations so that bit only applies
when you are adding to an existing file. However the empty file has the default
event definitions so you need to choose to keep the incoming definitions if
you've made any changes. The third option at the bottom of the combine screen.
9. Finish by opening the new file.
10. Go to your start person
11. Run an ancestor report using the options you desire.

Done.
There is one variation from what you desire. The spouses who are also your
direct line ancestors have an entry. I don't know why you'd want to suppress
them but you said you did.
I've actually done this as I've written the steps so can send you a sample
report privately if you'd like one.

It's possible that you don't even have tagging turned on so that the tags
 show on all views.
If you don't have tag boxes on the main couple on Family View you need to go
to Option 1.5 and turn on tagging.

(if you want the
siblings of your start person, you
need to start with one of their children or tag the siblings manually before
 step 6.)
 3. Click the Options button and choose to tag the relationship line.
 4. Close the Relationship Calculator
 5. If you want to see whether the tags worked OK - go to the Name List,
Search Show all tagged x where x is the tag number you are working with.
Understand that although you are EXPORTING, from Legacy's point of view
you are IMPORTING into an empty file. This is why you need to check the show
 combine options when event defini
tions are different. The empty file has no locations so that bit only applies
when you are adding to an existing file. However the empty file has the
default event definitions so you need to choose to keep the incoming
definitions if you've made any changes. The third option at the bottom of the
 combine screen.
 9. Finish by opening the new file.
 10. Go to your start person
 11. Run an ancestor report using the options you desire.

 Done.
There is one variation from what you desire. The spouses who are also your
direct line ancestors have an entry. I don't know why you'd want to suppress
them but you said you did.
I've actually done this as I've written the steps so can send you a sample
report privately if you'd like one.

  click on UNTAG radio button,Â

If not, click the CHANGE button and select Janes name so that it
shows in the Individual Tagging window.
  Now clock the ANCESTORS button,
a new window opens and here you select who to include; siblings,

Tagging is VERY easy and will not change any of your data.

Please try and see how simple this can be for you...

You do not realize that anyone can do this, even you.

If you cannot learn the tools that are available and make Legacy such a
great program, you cannot expect to get the most out of all your work.

Jane,

I love the style and content of this report and feel it would be a wonderful
addition to the Legacy Reports. The old Family Origins Genealogy software
allowed one to select the individual facts/events to be included in a given
report. It was a nice option.

I hope you've already sent in a request to Legacy requesting this report style.

Yes, that would be a very useful type of report.
However, that has nothing to do with what ahnentafel is, and to call it an
ahnentafel report is misleading.

Some good explanations of ahnentafel are at
http://www.familychronicle.com/Ahnentafel.html and

Re: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel report example

2014-05-20 Thread Jay 1FamilyTree
Jane,

here is a detailed list of steps for you

Make a backup copy of your Legacy database

Go to Jane Wells
Click on the menu bar EDIT go to TAG RECORDS
First we need to make sure that tags 1,2 and 3 are clear of any existing
tags
click on UNTAG radio button,
It should already say Make Changes on 1
click on the EVERYONE button.
Lets repeat for 2,
click untag radio button,
you need to change the Make changes on to 2
Click Everyone
Lets repeat for 3
click untag radio button,
you need to change the Make changes on to 3
Click Everyone
Now we have cleared everyone from any 1,2 and 3 tags
Since we opened the Tag Records menu from Janes page, she should be the
person selected in the name field
If not, click the CHANGE button and select Janes name so that it shows in
the Individual Tagging window.
Now clock the ANCESTORS button,
a new window opens and here you select who to include; siblings, siblings
spouses etc select your needs. (do not select entire related)
Then click OK.
It will set the tag 1 for all the persons that meet the parameters.
Close the tag window, and go to the ancestor James Hulstar.
From the menu bar EDIT go to TAG RECORDS
In the tag window, James name should be the selected person.
Change the Make Changes on TAG number to 2
Click on the descendants button, select just descendants, click OK.
Close the Tag window
Go to the Menu bar SEARCH FIND
In the LOOK FOR select INDIVIDUAL
WHERE TO LOOK - tag 1
How to look - EQUAL
What to Look - TAGGED
Select the Second Condition
Individual
TAG 2
Equals
Tagged
Then check the radio button near the bottom, Clear list before search
Click on Create List
The SEARCH window list opens with the persons who meet the parameters,
Click on the OPTIONS button
Select Advanced Tagging
Make changes on needs to be changed to TAG 3
click on EVERYONE IN SEARCH LIST
now all the people you want in your report are tagged, so lets export them
to a new file

FILE EXPORT GEDCOM
Change the character set to UTF8
Click RECORD SELECTION and click on the radio button for records tagged
with and change the tag number to 3
NOW in your example you wanted the report to list the parents of a spouse,
so since the parents are not a DIRECT LINE between Jane and James, we
need to include them.
Select the Radio button for Export Spouses and export Parents (siblings is
optional prob wouldnt hurt to include if you have any ancestors who married
a sibling of a spouse)
Close the record selection window
Click on CUSTOMIZE
here the events that are in you database are listed in the right side
window under Export these items
If there are any items you do not wish to include in your report
Just scroll to the event name and click on it so that it is highlighted,
then click on REMOVE.
Do that for all you want to exclude, then click on OK
Then click on START EXPORT and select a new name for this file.

Open your new file
Select Jane, select Ancestor narrative
and BINGO,
EXACTLY what you asked for in your original message

Re: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel report

2014-05-19 Thread Jane Sarles
Here is what I put in as a suggestion:

Ahnentafel - Direct Line. While the Ahnentafel Report shows all
ancestors of a selected person, the 'Direct Line' variation on this
report shows only ancestors on a particular line of ascent. With that
exception, all of the options related to the Ahnentafel report are also
available for the Ahnentafel - Direct Line.

The direct line is the important part. It includes similar information
to an Ancestor report (or an ahnentafel report), but only for the
direct line from person a to person b. From me to my oldest ancestor
with the surname Smith, for example.

Often I have cousins that I have met through our genealogy work to whom
I need to send my information about the family we share. I need to have
a report that only deals with the information that is common to us both,
i.e. a direct-line ahnentafel report.

Jane

 Hi Jane,

I'm not sure what you're looking for in this report exactly (ie, what's

I do know that there is an entry in the Legacy Help for Ahnentafel
Reports - have you seen that?

Have you tried running an Ancestor Book report? In Legacy v8 it's under
Report Ancestor Book. In Legacy v7.5 it's Reports Books/Other
 Ancestors.

You can include or exclude types of data in this report as you please.

Is this what you're looking for? If not, what's the difference?

Ahnentafel - Direct Line. While the Ahnentafel Report shows all ancestors of

ancestors on a particular line of ascent. With that exception, all of the

The direct line is the important part.  It includes similar information to an

I don't know how easy it is for computers to generate something like

I was referring to the one that Dave sent the link for. It looks like
if you go too many generations, it could be huge, stretching from left

Of course, back in those days, they probably didn't do wall charts

There are ton of different Ancestor chart styles that can be created
in other programs and I'm sure the programmers have looked at all of

Re: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel report

2014-05-19 Thread Ward Walker
It seems to me that your cousin would be interested in the details for all
descendants of person B. Your proposed report would exclude the siblings of
your direct line ancestors, as I understand it.

You and the cousin share a common ancestor, with you descending from one child
of that ancestor and they descending from another. Would it not make sense to
send one of the descendant type reports, starting with the child that you
descend from?

And if that descendant tree fans out too much, such that your place within it
is hard to identify, then you could send a separate report from the
Relationship Calculator to serve as a guide/reminder.

2014-05-19 Thread David Abernathy
Jane,

If you want anything other than what is described in my earlier post and link,
then it is NOT to be referred as being an “Ahnentafel Report”.

Thanks,

You and the cousin share a common ancestor, with you descending from one child
of that ancestor and they descending from another. Would it not make sense to
send one of the descendant type reports, starting with the child that you
descend from?

Â

And if that descendant tree fans out too much, such that your place within it
is hard to identify, then you could send a separate report from the
Relationship Calculator to serve as a guide/reminder.

Â

Here is what I put in as a suggestion:ÂÂ

Ahnentafel - Direct Line. While the Ahnentafel Report shows all ancestors of
a selected person, the 'Direct Line' variation on this report shows only
ancestors on a particular line of ascent. With that exception, all of the
options related to the Ahnentafel report are also available for the Ahnentafel
- Direct Line.

The direct line is the important part.  It includes similar information to
an Ancestor report (or an ahnentafel report), but only for  the direct line
from person a to person b.  From me to my oldest ancestor with the surname
Smith, for example.ÂÂ

Often I have cousins that I have met through our genealogy work to whom I need
to send my information about the family we share.  I need to have a report
that only deals with the information that is common to us both, i.e.  a
direct-line ahnentafel report.

Hi Jane,

I'm not sure what you're looking for in this report exactly (ie, what's
a 'true' Ahnentafel report, as opposed to other reports on offer?), but
I do know that there is an entry in the Legacy Help for Ahnentafel
Reports - have you seen that?

Have you tried running an Ancestor Book report? In Legacy v8 it's under
Report Ancestor Book. In Legacy v7.5 it's Reports Books/Other
Ancestors.

You can include or exclude types of data in this report as you please.

Is this what you're looking for? If not, what's the difference?

Kind Regards,
Wendy

I will make the suggestion, but i think I have done that before.

Sending in a suggestion is a good idea.

In the meantime you could tag and export the people you want in the
report and use the Ancestor Book report OR if that's not picking up all
the details you want of the family members you want added, use one of
the Descendant reports.

I believe I have submitted this suggestion.  Or at least the logic required for
a Lineage Report between two specified individuals (not just running up the
paternal line) would be the same.
The logic used to identify one side of the existing Relationship Calculator
would identify the people involved, and then just run the report (Ahnentafel or
Lineage) for those people... as though they were tagged... or in a database by
themselves.  (I know I am over-simplifying, but I also know it is not very hard
to code.)

2012-06-02 Thread Paula Ryburn
I turned off the printing of everything in the report options to get the
shortest version, but the vitals for each person are included.
I found that my first missing ancestor would be #32. However, the report
doesn't really give me a clue whose father that is... So, it assumes we know how
the numbers relate, right? And it is #16's father, right?
I think this stripped down version is fine for the stated requirement,
especially since it's not like you're going to print it. Mine is only 6 pages
anyway for 10 generations.
Thanks for this interesting topic.

Howland Davis and Gene A,
I agree with Howland that Legacy does *NOT* provide an Ahnentafel
Report. At best, Legacy provides a semi-stripped down ancestor report
which passes for an Ahnentafel Report.
IMHO, an Ahnentafel Report simply provides the following:

#1. My name
#2. My father's name
#3. My mother's name
#4. My father's father's name
#5. My father's mother's name
#6. My mother's father's name
#7. and on

Legacy adds much more, such as information pertaining to the parents
of each person above, generation numbers, spouses, and on.
Howland wishes to create a short Ahnentafel report in order to find
my first unknown ancestor . I would like to do that for my family
also, but the Legacy report is *NOT* short, not concise, etc., as the
generally accepted Ahnentafel Report is.

An easier way to find Ahnentafel numbers and see graphically which is
your first missing ancestor is to use the pedigree report. The numbers
of the individuals on that report also use the Ahnentafel numbering system.
