I've only looked at one person so far, but I had no death date for her
and zero suggested Sources in Research Guidance suggestions. Then I put
a year into the Death Date field and immediately lots of Sources appeared.

Presumably, this is a "design feature" but I don't like it. If I have
to put "any old date" in the field in order to get the suggestions, I am
quite likely to forget it is "any old" and think I have some evidence
for it and will restrict my researches to around that time.

There must be lots of suggestions which could be made even without an
indication of what sort of time period one should be searching in.

Kathy,

Can you not estimate dates based on the information you have? I always try to
put in birth, date, marriages estimations. At the very least I put in Bef. or
Aft. Dates. Where did you get these names in the first place? Census records?
Obits? Even if you are 10 years off that is better than no dates. As more
info comes in, you can narrow the dates.

Not the point though Michelle - I personally have some ideas, but Legacy is
giving me no suggestions on where to look
I do have a number of "Alt. Death" events for people who I am uncertain of
when they died - even those don't help Legacy to give me hints like
the regular normal ones
of"Cemeteries, World-wide" or "England Probate Records" or "England/Wales
Parish Register - Burials" etc
It doesnt even have these as suggested soources for this person

No, I didn't find the names from Obituaries, if I had, I'd have a death
date or at least year for them
I have the names from the baptisms of their children or their own marriage
document, or from census records.
No I can't always use the census records because some of these people died
after the last available census for the area (ie 1911 in England)
Yes, some did die between census records, and for those I don't need the
hints because I have a very defined time frame.

I thought Legacy was a programme to record your Family Tree with the
additional bonus of sometimes giving you ideas of where to look - not a one
stop department store - I thought the idea was they give you some ideas of
where you might find some locations but they aren't supposed to do the
research for you. That's how I use and see it anyway.

Kathy,

If I have nothing but a marriage record I assume the groom was abt 21 and the
bride was about 18. If I have nothing but the date of birth of the children,
I find the oldest know child and calculate the marriage date 1 year before that
and then their ages using the 21/18 rule. If you have a marriage or a baptism,
you have at least one location on their timeline for the Research Guidance to
work with. When I put in a test person with one date and England as a location
I got the specific databases you listed.

I believe you are missing Kathy Thompson's point. I think she is asking
LegacyFamilyTree's Research Guidance to have your logic built in. That is
for the program to be intelligent enough to determine that there is a
missing death date for a person and then use the generic rules you describe
to make suggestions as to where to look for the missing information. She
wants to avoid entering guessed data into her known genealogy file. If the
person is born in England, married in England, and has English descendants
then one would expect English vital records to be listed ahead of French,
German, or American sources, if these latter sources are mentioned at all in
the Research Guidance.

Re: [LegacyUG] Research guidance - Goal with no suggestions

2013-12-26 Thread Kathy Thompson
Actually - my point is not that I want hints, my point is that I have Zero
hints and I've never seen Legacy have Zero hints for anyone in any of the
areas before.

In fact, none of my NEWLY added people have hints in the "Suggested Sources
- Goal: Death"

As far as I can tell, the people who were in Legacy before the upgrade to
L8 have Death suggestions, but the people I know that I've added in the
last week, none of them have any Goal: Death suggested sources.

I think I have a bug and I'm asking others to check their own files to
confirm / deny that.

That's the point of my original post.

Which was

For one of my people, I have Zero suggested sources to try and find a
death, no ignored sources either.

How? I have a dozen kids, half a dozen residences, no death for the person.
Why do I not have suggested sources for finding a death?

Bug? or what?

I seem to have research goals for people entered yesterday including deaths for
those who have died.

Re: [LegacyUG] Research guidance - Goal with no suggestions

2013-12-27 Thread Kathy Thompson
I'm finding more and more people - even among those I've had for a long
time - without Goal: Death suggestions

but like I said before, it's not because I'm relying on them, it's that it
appears to be a bug that I am reporting it, but I want more "bug
verification" before I report it officially.

Either that, or which support/technical person is willing to get offlist
screen shots to see what I am seeing

Re: [LegacyUG] Research guidance - Goal with no suggestions

2013-12-27 Thread Brian/Support
In comparing Legacy 8.0 to 7.5 I found that in Legacy 7.5 the Research
Guidance would use estimated dates and places for events. It then used
these estimated values for suggesting sources for the Goal tabs. In
Legacy 8 the program no longer uses estimated dates or locations and, as
a result, missing vital events (such as death entries) have no suggested
sources.

I have submitted a problem report on this with both changes identified
as Bugs. The Help for Research Guidance still says Legacy will estimate
dates and places in the timeline.
