The camera is iffy. Works for some people, not for others. Forget about the
remote control. Everything else should work OK once you find the right
drivers.

As for the battery, it seems to be somewhat different in shape, which would
probably preclude battery swapping.

Thanks for the thought, but it doesn't seem to be a problem with the capture
software, but rather a problem with the particular drivers that XP thinks it
should be using.

According to the Device Manager, what's been installed is a "Toshiba TsbVcap,
WDM Video Capture". When I try and access the camera from any program, I get a
a long delay, followed by a black screen. Seems like the driver knows enough
of the camera's commands to detect it, but not actually access it.
Device Manager claims the device is operating properly, but we all know just
how little that means.

C.

PS: For the person who asked how much memory I had in the machine, but whose
email I accidentally deleted before replying, the answer is 128MB.

[LIB] WinXP on 1100v

2002-11-12 Thread Casey Karp
Date: Tue, 12 Nov 2002 20:22:46 -0800
From: Casey Karp <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: WinXP on 1100v

For anyone who was wondering...

I posted a while back that I was going to try installing XP Pro on my ff1100v.

The install went very smoothly over the network. All of the built-in hardware
was recognized (including the camera!) except for the Smart Media reader. A
quick trip to the Ratoc website to grab the latest XP-compatible driver and it
seems to be fine.

I note, however, that the camera doesn't actually seem to work, despite XP
having installed drivers for it. This may just be a problem with the Windows
"Scanner and Camera Wizard". I'll try a different program at some point when I
have more time. If anyone has recommended software that is known to work on
the XP/1100v combination, please let me know!

The only really obnoxious thing I've found is that every time I boot the
computer, it complains that my video resolution (800x480) is too low and asks
me if I want to change to 800x600. Since I hate scrolling, I keep refusing.

Cheers!

My father has an EZ-Gig drive that we were going to use for doing backups.

things up so that he Ghosts from one internal partition to the other, then

Granted, this was on a Satellite, not a Libby, and if you're going to do the
drive swap, you only need it to work once, but still, it's enough to make me
worry about the technique.

Isn't the 1100 identical to the 1100v except for the smaller drive, less
memory installed, and the lack of the camera?  If so, then David is right;
96 would be the max (largest upgrade added to the 1100v gives a total of 128.

don't want to be the first to experiment...

Maybe not. The 1100 series uses the "hibernate to a file called
hiberfil.sys on your C drive" technique like some of the larger
laptops. So there is no hibernation "region" as such. (Note: Works like a
charm for me under both Win98 and Win2000. Haven't gotten around to
putting Linux on the machine, so I have no idea how it would handle that.

Sounds about right to me. Then enable hibernation (in the OS; I'm assuming
it's already enabled in your BIOS) and give it a shot.

I use Exact Audio Copy ( http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/ ). It's free, it
allows you to choose a balance between speed and accuracy of extraction,
it's free, it supports CDDB, supports both MP3 and Ogg Vorbis, and it's free.

You'll also need a copy of Lame 3.91, which you can find all over the net.

Did I mention that EAC is free?

"Grueling". Now there's a word you don't see spelled correctly very often
these days.Agreed that it would be a pain in the rear; when I
need to do something like that, I tend to rely on "tree > tmp.txt" and a
text editor. Under Windows (if Windows is loadable), the easy solution is
to select the directories in question and use the "Send to clipboard as
name" command from the MS PowerToys.

>But I've already obliterated one partition with Ghost about a year

Yup. I've screwed up a couple of systems that way too.

>Good suggestion though. It is a possibility.

Later thought: don't Win95/98 come with a program for backing up long
filenames? Could you use that to back up the long names and then use
something like pkzip to back up the actual files?

If you're not in a hurry, how about using the -skip commandline parameter
to exclude everything except the directories you want to keep?

See below for an excerpt from the Ghost2001 manual; I'm pretty sure that
the -skip command goes back to at least Ghost 5 (before Norton bought it).

Hope that helps,

 C.

-skip=x
Skip File. Causes Norton Ghost to exclude the indicated files during an
operation. A skip entry can specify a single file, directory, or multiple files
using the * wildcard. File names must be given in short file name format
and all pathnames are absolute. Only FAT system files are able to be
skipped. It is not possible to skip files on NTFS or other file systems. The
skip switch may only be included in the command line once. To specify
multiple skip entries, they must be included in a text file indicated using
-skip=@skipfile. The format of the skip text file skipfile matches the format
used with the CRC32 vexcept option.
Examples:
-skip=\windows\user.dll
Skips the file user.dll in the windows directory.
-skip=*\readme.txt
Skips any file called readme.txt in any directory.
-skip=\ghost\*.dll
Skips any file ending with .dll in the ghost directory.
Norton Ghost command-line switches
-skip=\progra~1\
Skips the whole program files directory (note the short file name).
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Skips files as outlined in the skipfile.txt file. For example, the skipfile.txt
contains:
*\*.tmt
[partition:1]
\windows\
*\*.exe
[Partition:2]
*\*me.txt
This would skip all *.tmt files on any partition, the windows directory and
any *.exe files on the first partition, and any file that ended with the me.txt
on the second partition.

Since I actually do have two mice attached to my desktop

you manage to move the two mice at the same speed, the pointer just sits

*sigh* OK, fubarlibretto-san, forget about my advice until you (a) get rid

Win2000. (Note: I just tried it with IE open and it worked fine. I don't

That's weird. Why should hitting Tab return you to Outlook... Oh, wait,

Just out of curiousity, Pres, can you try it under Win98 with several

Brace yourself. Simple it isn't but it does work for me (under Win2K, anyhow):

1) Windows key (or Ctrl-Esc): opens the Start menu
2) Esc: closes the Start menu, leaving focus on the Start button
3) Tab twice: First tab puts focus on the QuickLaunch toolbar, second on

4) "Other Windows key" (also known as context menu key) or Shift-F10: Opens
the menu that includes Tile Windows.

Hope that helps,

Ian, sorry to hear it.

It sounds like Microsoft decided that if you're using OE, you can't
possibly want to use any other browser than IE, so they hard-coded OE to
use IE instead of the default browser...

Does it make any difference if Opera is already running when you click a
link? When I used Netscape with IE as the default browser, NS would trap
the call to the default browser if it was running.

(For the record, these days I'm using Eudora 5 for email, XNews for
newsgroups, and Opera for the web, and they all get along just fine
together. )

I haven't worked with OE5 -- I avoid MS software as much as possible -- but
unless OE is doing something nasty, it shouldn't take a registry hack.

Close OE. Launch Opera, and hit Alt-P for the Preference screen. Choose
Default Browser from the list at the left side. Put checkmarks in the
boxes for http, https, and ftp on the bottom part of the screen. Click
OK. Exit Opera, and restart the computer.

Return to Opera and verify that the configuration hasn't changed.

If not, launch OE and try clicking a link in a message. If it loads the
page in Opera, you're all set. If it launches IE, get rid of OE and get a
real mail client.Seriously, if it does launch IE, it probably
means that Microsoft has hard-coded IE into OE, which would be typical MS
arrogance.

Win2000 Keyboard Help needed!

From: Casey Karp <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Win2000 Keyboard Help needed!

I've taken the plunge and upgraded my 1100v from Win98SE to
Win2000. Everything is working, even the camera (which I find amazing,
frankly), but I've run into one little problem: I can't find a way to set
up the software to use the Japanese keyboard layout.

Under Win98, I was using a KBD file downloaded from
http://pokemon.ho.org/ff1100/ but Win2000 needs a kbd*.dll file.

Has anyone come up with a way to either convert a kbd to a dll (best
solution) or to create a keyboard dll from scratch (next best)? I've
looked at KLM 2000, which claims to import and export both formats, but it
doesn't recognize the kbd file.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer,

Casey

Raymond,

Before you import it into Excel, you need to export it from the GDB into
CSV. Your best bet for that is to check the HP Super Site at
http://www.palmtop.net/super.html for the program GDBIO.

You might also look at the Super Site for a program called GDBWin, which is
a Windows program to let you use the HPLX GDB files. Works great on my
Libretto.

PC-Card services for L1100?

Does anyone know where I can find DOS PC-Card services for an 1100? I
tried the ones that came with my ancient Toshiba laptop; they work OK on an

machine.

I'm trying to set this up so I can use the latest version of Ghost with my
network card.

What do I do with these files

Subject: What do I do with these files

Just looking over the harddrive of my 1100v when I noticed something I
hadn't seen before. There's a hidden file called TOSHIBER.DAT that's 130MB
in size. There's also a directory named "erd" that contains a bunch of
apparently renamed boot files (autoexec.b_t, for example). I'm guessing
that these things are some kind of emergency repair or emergency boot
system, but what the heck am I supposed to do with them?

Anyone have any insight? I'd love to free up the space they're occupying
by moving them to a CD or something.

His machine is a plain 1100, rather than an 1100v like yours and mine, but

Restoring Hibernation mode and English Utilities?

2000-07-04 Thread Casey Karp

From: Casey Karp <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Restoring Hibernation mode and English Utilities?

So my shiny, new 1100v (thanks dynamism.com!) is mostly set up and working.
Finally got it to recognize my network card (by buying a new one -- it
likes this Linksys Network Anywhere 10/100 16-bit card *much* better than
the previous NetGear CardBus card). Got most of my must-have software
installed. A couple more programs to install, and then a "restore to
defaults" backup to do and I'm all set.

Which just leaves one little problem: Apparently, in the course of
installing US Win98SE, Dynamism wiped out the Hibernation partition. Does
anyone know how to recreate it so I can use Hibernation mode? I see the
"Enable Hibernation" checkbox in the Power Saver control panel applet, but
that doesn't seem to actually create the partition...

And then the open question. The Toshiba Hardware utility is, not
surprisingly, in Japanese, which makes it unreadable in English Windows.
Are the 110 "Accessories" and "Controls" from the Toshiba US website close
enough that I could use them instead, or would I be risking severe damage
to my machine?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

S.

Re: Xircom Combo - Can't connect to network

I'm having a similar problem with my shiny new 1100v -- My Netgear CardBus
card is apparently properly installed, as the Device Manager shows it
working properly. My ipconfig results are similar to yours (using my own
IP address, naturally).

I had the same problem when I upgraded my old Satellite Pro from Win95 to
Win98. I solved it there by repeating the Win98 installation with the card
plugged in, but I'd rather not do that here if someone knows a simpler way...
