AW: HDD Replacement
Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 12:50:11 +0200 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: HDD Replacement What I found out about installing HD's 8GB and hibernating: - Install the big disk - use DOS Fdisk to create partitions which version of dos? DOS 6.22? win95 DOS? Win95b/98 DOS? There are differences in each that make it important to know which you used. eg. DOS 6.22 won't do 2GB partitions. I used DOS 6.22, but it does not matter which FDISK you use. Every FDISK which uses BIOS for disk access sees the disk size (but max. 8GB!) without the hibernation area. It does not matter how big the partitions and logical disks are, I created with DOS 6.22 a primary partition and an extended partition up to the end of the seen disk. Later in Win2K I was sure that the end of this extended Partition is the begin of the hibernation area. Once you know the position of the hibernation area, it is possible to delete the partitions and logical disks below 8GB (created by DOS-FDISK) and create them new with Win2k according to your needs. regards Gerhard Gerhard Kapusta Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4989-1488201115 ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

It's not on Davids list! As far as i know, this is a HDD with 12mm heigth. For 100/110CTs the maximum height is 9.5mm. Currently the biggest HDD for a Lib is the Toshiba 30GB. Does a Win 2k install then sort out all the BIOS and hibernation issues, or do I have to do any of the partitioning stuff??? Win2K is capeable to handle large disks, but YOU have to sort out all the stuff with partitioninig and YOU have to tell Win2K what to do! Does a Win 2k install then sort out all the BIOS and hibernation issues, or do I have to do any of the partitioning stuff??? It'll see the entire HD, but nobody yet running Win2K has verified exactly where the hibernation partition information is stored. Nor with Disk Manager programs. (anybody out there do any tests?) This is not true, I have done it! Here is an excerpt from a posting, which I have sent several times to this list: What I found out about installing HD's 8GB and hibernating: - Install the big disk - use DOS Fdisk to create partitions - use an operating system which does not use the BIOS for disk acccess to partition the rest of the HD. I used Win2k. Leave the amount of RAM + the amount of graphic memory free on the end of the existing partitions (should be near the 8G boarder) and create a new partition and fill it with data. - force hibernating by BIOS (may be done in DOS!) and check whether the partition above the 8G is destroyed. If the partition is destroyed, make the empty space a little bigger and test again. Note that partition boarders are only possible at Zylinder boarders. - Use a tool to look at the partitions, sectors, zylinders to understand the correspondence (g.g. DISKMAP from WinNT4 Res Kit or Partition Magic. Once You know, how to partition the disk, you dont have to do this time-comsuming method to find it out! But write down your results... For a Lib 110 with 64MB RAM and a IBM 20GB disk the hibernation partition starts at zylinder 1018, size is 9 zylinders. Within Win2k it is neccessary to allocate 71MB free space for hibernating. regards Gerhard Gerhard Kapusta Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4989-1488201115 ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

AW: BIOS version for Win 2000
Date: Tue, 21 Aug 2001 08:46:27 +0200 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: BIOS version for Win 2000 Hi! This is a question for those who 110CT users who have upgraded to Win 2000... On the Toshiba website, there is a Flash BIOS upgrade version 8.0 which is said to support Win 2000, and on the download page for this item, under Applicable Models, both the 100CT and 110CT are listed. However, in the Readme.txt file which comes with this download, only the 100CT is referred to. So what's the story here...does the 110CT need this BIOS upgrade to run Win 2000 or not? It is true that the 110-BIOS's are described as BIOS for the 100CT. Win2k runs great but the lack of sound is a bummer. I'll try a fresh install w/o the recovery cd but i'm expecting problems with the display and perhaps the fdd. I'll report back my findings on the fresh install but if possible could you direct me as to which driver files to d/load from your link? Use from my suggested link: - Toshiba Value added Logical Device - Toshiba Power Extensions 1 - Toshiba Utilities That's all! Also do you have the service pack 1 installed? I'm wondering if this could help my problem in any way? You should use SP1, but it has no influence on your problem. Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 18:43:35 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: I don't suppose anyone's made a brightness control util for W Note: There are 2 Versions of "Toshiba Power Management Extensions" for Win2k available: - Version 1, which adds a battery- or or power cable-icon to the system tray (only if selected!). This version is more suitable for the Lib in my opinion. There are only 2 small limitations: the driver supports 8 steps of brightness, the hardware only 4. The second limittion is, that switching the profiles from the tray icon does not work correct. You must switch it from the Power Management control panel. Of course it ist possible to create several profiles. - Version 2 seems to be designed for newer Toshiba notebooks. It introduces the "hairy light bulb" in Win2k. I have tested it, but I found a lot of limitations (which I have forgotten in detail) in combination with a Lib, so I throwed it away... (the driver, not the Lib!) I found all drivers in several different Languages at http://support.toshiba-tro.de/win2000/2000update.htm There are 5 Win2K drivers available on this page: - "Toshiba Value added Logical Device": I don't know what ist is, but you will need it! - "Toshiba Value added Logical Device Special": I don't know what it is. It does not work on the Lib, but you will not miss it! It seems to be for other Toshiba models. - "Toshiba Power Extensions 1": see above - "Toshiba Power Extensions 2": see above - "Toshiba Utilities": Install it, it contains the hardware control panel. regards Gerhard ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

FAQ: HD's 8 GB
Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2001 21:02:14 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: FAQ: HD's 8 GB Hi David! I read your updated FAQ, there is mentioned, that the problem exists for L50's or L70's but not for L100's or 110's. This is agains my experience! Updating a L110 to the latest BIOS gives still the 8GB limitation. No problem for WinNT, Win2k or Linux, but also tools as Partition Magic can see only the first 8GB's. For hibernation a part of the disk is used where the BIOS thinks it is at the end of the disk. A good practice to partition a larger disk could be: - Create partition(s) with DOS or other partitioning tools in the area below 8GB. - Install an appropriate operating system - Leave 71MB free (for a L100 or L110 with 64MB) for hibernating. 71MB is neccessary because you have to add the video memory and round it up to the next cylinder. I dont know the value for 32MB memory. - Create partition(s) above 8GB with the installed operating system. A hibernation partition is always nacessary, there are occasions, where the BIOS puts the Lib into hibernation, even if it is disabled or handled by the operating system! Currently 20GB disks from IBM, Toshiba and other manufaturers are available. Very soon a new 30 GB disk from Toshiba will be available. If the new disk is bigger than 8 GB, which is the limit of the BIOS, you must use an operating system which does not use BIOS for disk access. Only minor slowdown with Win2k, but make sure to have 64 MB RAM installed! I can speak only for the Lib 110, where the speed is sufficient, I have never used a Lib 100. As mentioned several times before, partitioning is a bit tricky: To hibernate a Lib uses the last part of the installed HD. If the HD is = 8GB and you use the bios for disk access (DOS, Win95, Win98), you will not notice anything about this. You only will see that the HD size looks a bit smaller (depending on the amount of the installed RAM). On other operating systems which do not use bios for disk access (WinNT, Win2k, Unix) you will see an empty space at the end of the disk - do not try to use this space, even if you plan to disable the hibernate feature or if hibernating is handled by the operation system (as Win2k does!) If the HD is 8G, best practice is to partition the lower part with DOS, and the upper part (above the free space) with the non-bios-disk-access operating system. regards Gerhard Gerhard Kapusta Email office: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4989-1488201115 ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
AW: 20Gig HD in L50?
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 11:10:57 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: 20Gig HD in L50? Hi Tom! OK, I'm about to replace my 4.3Gig with a 20Gig or so HD in the L50. I'll still be running Win95. What is the best way to partition it? As far as I know you must use an operating system which does not use bios for disk access. These are WinNT, Win2K and Unix. The Lib 50 is limited to 32 MB. This allows a very poor WinNT and I assume Win2k will not run at all - or it will swap to death. QUESTION - with 32Meg RAM, exactly how much space do I need to leave open after 8Gig? Or is the space *up to* 8Gig? You need 32MB + size video RAM and it has to be on cylinder boarders. The space is up to 8 GB, details see below! For a Lib 110 with 64MB the shown size of the free space is 71 MB. IOW, do I run 4 2Gig partitions, skip X Meg (32? 64?), then continue with 2Gig partitions until I max out the drive, or do I run 3 2Gig partitions, a 4th partition of [2Gig minus X Meg], then continue? For the reserved space, do I set it in FDISK, but then leave it unformatted? I would suggest: 1st step: Use DOS-fdisk to partition the old HD. 2nd step: Install WinNT, Win2K or Linux on the old HD or install the old HD on another system and inspect the partitions. 3rd step: Install the new big HD and partition it with DOS-fdisk. Now the lower part is ready. 4th step: Install the "non-bios-disk-access" operating system and partition the rest of the disk. Make sure that there is a free space between the end of the existing partitions (from step 3) and the new partitions in the upper area. The size of the free space you know from step 2. AW: L100+Win2k+Enhanced port
Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 23:24:04 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: L100+Win2k+Enhanced port I have it, running with Win2k. No configuration, no extra drivers, simply plug Lib in and go! (Win2k automatically installs an USB driver) Works fine, but you must know that the new PC-Card slots on the port replicator gets the power from the AC-adaptor, it is not useful to use the enhanced port replicator without the AC-adaptor! (this is in opposite to the mini portreplicator, which works also without AC-adaptor!) There is a new entry near the "Start"-button in Win2k: "PC trennen" (in the German version, I dont know the english variant, but it means to remove the Lib from the Port replicator without shuting down. It works, but you may get into troubles, if PC-Cards (e.g. network is still in use...) I found no way to activate the port replicator after inserting the Lib without shutdown. On booting with the enhanced port replicator there is a new icon for a few seconds beyond the red "Toshiba" - so it seems that the bios has to know about it. The combination with the enhanced port replicator is mechanically not very fix and stable, I would not transport it combined. regards Gerhard -Originalnachricht- Von: Alexandre Kaoukhov An: Libretto Gesendet: 30.12.00 00:36 Betreff: Unknown Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 00:36:28 +0100 From: "Alexandre Kaoukhov" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Unknown I am considering the purchase of an enhanced port replicator. AW: FUBAR 2 - L110 20Gb HDD / Win'2k question
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2000 13:36:44 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: FUBAR 2 - L110 20Gb HDD / Win'2k question Hi Steve! Yes, I've successfully installed an IBM 20 GB disk and Win2k. It runs now without problems and with all features of the Lib. The only thing about my IBM disk is, that if I shake the disk, it seems that there are some loose screws falling around inside the disk - but (as diskussed here) this seems to be normal for IBM-disks (but it is hard to imagine, what benefit loose parts in a HD might have...) Depending on the partitioning, it might be possible to install Win2k, if the content of the Win2k-CD already on the Disk, but it is very easy to lock yourself out... I also do not own a CD-ROM. By accident I've destroyed the content of the HD - instead of removing the disk again I installed DOS and used Interlink to transfer the Win2k-CD via a serial cable. It works, but you have to be patient, best is to leave it run over the night. But without an own PC even this method is difficult. You have to know, how to partition the HD correct, to leave space for hibernation at the right position. See my (and others) recent posts to this list. But if you do not own a PC with a LAN-Card, how do you want to install additional Software? And how do you want to backup it? regards Gerhard Gerhard Kapusta SIEMENS AG Österreich PSE SMC MI3 Email office: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
RE: HD upgrade 8mg limit
Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 09:58:24 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: HD upgrade 8mg limit Hi Richard! What I found out about installing HD's 8GB and hibernating: - Install the big disk - use DOS Fdisk to create partitions - use an operating system which does not use the BIOS for disk acccess to partition the rest of the HD. Within Win2k it is neccessary to allocate 71MB free space for hibernating. regards Gerhard ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

AW: Upgrading
Date: Wed, 29 Nov 2000 14:09:50 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: Upgrading Hi Brian! I would suggest never to upgrade an operation system, install it from scratch! It has be prooved since many years (mostly with Windows NT4) to have at least 2 operating systems (may be identical) on one computer. Together with a network card this allows to move entire partitions for backup purpose. If I do not make too big mistakes, I have always at least one running spare operation system. So I suggest: try to install a network card, save all important data and start again... If you can't connect to a network, plug the hard disk into another PC and save your data. AW: The never ending story: Now I have it!
Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 09:40:51 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: The never ending story: Now I have it! The main point, which I now understand is: "Partitioning a HD inside the Libretto (with Libretto's BIOS ) automatically leaves the neccessary space free." A lot of misunderstanding coud be avoided, if this sentence would be printed in the Libretto's manual or if the Toshiba hotline would be able to explain this fact! I thougt, I'm an advanced user ;-)) and so I prepared my HD inside another computer - and then of course I always asked how to partition correct... Windows NT and 2000 does not use BIOS, but you can see with NT or 2000 the result of using FDISK: aprox. 71MB is left blank at the end of a HD 8GB. For HD's 8GB I simply leave this 71MB free and the continue with allocating partitions. The exact sizes can be read out with DISKMAP.EXE, which is a tool of the Windows NT Resource Kit (probably downloadable from Microsoft). Win2k success
Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 10:07:01 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Win2k success Hi! I have now finished the Win2k installation on my Lib 110. All is working perfect - at least 99% ;-)) Power management, standby, hibernation, battery saving options, hwsetup - all is up and running! On an IBM 20GB disk. Even automatic transition from standby to hibernation works! Intern/extern monitor switch is possible via hwsetup control-panel and reboot - I can live with this. If there would be a recommendation by Toshiba, a lot of experiments and re-installations could be avoided... It is relatively simple: First you have to upgrade to Bios 8.00. Then you need only 3 software-packages from Toshiba (e.g. http://support.toshiba-tro.de/win2000/2000update.htm ) - Toshiba Value added Logical Device - Toshiba Power Extensions 1 (which is NOT the "hairy light bulb"! The "hairy light bulb", which is version 2, works only partly!) - Toshiba Utilities (= hwsetup control panel) It is important to use the same language versions as the Win2k itself. I noticed no error messages in this case, but the control panel extensions did not appear! Correct partitioning of the disk is still in progress, see my next mail... Win2k on Lib 110?
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 08:46:51 +0100 From: Kapusta Gerhard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Win2k on Lib 110? Hi! Since some Days I own a Libretto 110. My plan is to install Win2k, but there is no official support for this. My current state is: - BIOS V8.00 installed (should be Win2k capeable). - Win2k installed and up. - Power management for Win2k installed. The Control Panel has now an extension (whrere processor speed and brightness of the display is adjustable) but changes on this panel make no effect, these parameters always remain on the defaults. - There is no "Battery"-control panel (as in Win98), and I see no need for it, because the extended power management control panel covers all. - Suspend and hibernate is working correct. Win2k generates for hibernation a file "hiberfil.sys" on the system-partition. So is there an need for a second "hibernation-partition" which is used for other operating-systems? And how can I remove this partition, if it is not needed? - I have not yet found the Win2k-utilities to make BIOS-adjustments. - What is the Toshiba mobile extensions software? - I have planned to install a IBM 20GB HD - will it work in Win2k (because the BIOS-limit is still 8GB!)
