At a later point I noticed a tapping playing audio CDs that I'm not certain was there before. EAC is a vicious bit of software - it will try and retry to get the audio data off without glitches, and sometimes tries tens of times for the same chunk of data. I've known it take ten hours for a single CD, which is why I prefer WinDAC32. I've not noticed any ill effects from using EAC, though I've only ever used it on a desktop. Using Easy CD Creator I have copied audio directly to the m820e from a Toshiba CDROM, and copied data from CD directly to it. This all using the m820e attached to an Adaptec AHA-2940 host adapter in a desktop. The next project will be using the Lib with it. So far, it (m820e) has been very quiet and cooperative. I have not ripped with it though, so will report on that ASAP. Neil Apparently EAC is very picky about the drives it rips from. The Toshiba 20X CDROM drive in my desktop does not appear on the EAC web site's preferred list (neither does the HP m820e), but rips are lightning fast (audio CD ripped to .wav, saved to SCSI HDD in just a few minutes) and glitch-free. Using the Lib to rip is probably not the best use of the resources available to me, but just in case, where is WinDAC32 available? Is it freeware? Thanks. I have not ripped with it though, so will report on that ASAP. Yeah... I didn't have any problems writing to CDs with the drive. Nor did I have problems reading data from the drive. It was when I used my favorite MP3 player, MusicMatch v4.0 to rip audio from music CDs that I ran into problems. Programs were complaining that they couldn't extact digital audio from the designated drive. I did a few Google searches, and found a complaint about the M820E having problems with MusicMatch ripping CDs. I'd prefer to use the same program to play and rip MP3s, and not to have to clutter up my HDD with a bunch of programs, but had to do so in this case. Matt Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 20:58:26 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Just installed a HP m820e external CDRW drive on my L100. The PCMCIA/SCSI card is switchable from 16-bit to Cardbus. It installed fine set to 16-bit, but set to Cardbus, it is unacknowledged by W98se. Using Toshiba's HWSetup in Control Panel to change the PC Card setting to Cardbus/16-bit from PCIC Compatible, then rebooting, W98 starts to load a PCI Cardbus Bridge, but then asks for a driver, Toshiba ToPCI95 Cardbus Controller. To complicate things, at this point the PCMCIA slots are completely shut down, so accessing a CD is impossible. Does anyone know where this driver can be found, and the procedure for getting it installed, or should I just be happy with PCIC Compatible mode? I thought the L100 110 could do Cardbus. You should have the drivers set up... and they can probably be found in c:\windows\system or where you have the win files on your HDD? You should have them ( the .CABS ) on your HDD for just this reason! Do it in PCIC mode then switch over and get the CardBUS stuff in! Thanks Pres Waterman, W2PW c/o 112 Motors, LLC Long Island Ford, Kia and Used Dealer GO BILLS! Pres, Bingo! Thanks. As everyone has advised gazillions of times by now - but I didn't listen - copying the .cab files to the HDD is mandatory, even for a 2-PCMCIA machine. I had to set up the drivers twice, as Device Manager insisted that an updated driver was needed, then simply repeated the whole process again, and now she's Cardbussed!
