At this point I'd contact the manufacturer of the motherboard and describe
the problem. Is there any possibility that you're using the wrong BIOS
update?

If you are in fact using the correct BIOS update, the manufacturer may have
released an update/fix for the problem you're having.

Thanks for the advice, Matt!

Just tried this but no go

Got same PhoenixPhlash Error Message:

   "File Close failed on BIOS.ROM"

I do get about 4 or five beeps when it is finishing process

I also forgot to mention that I took out the extra RAM that I put in too,
just in case that makes a difference...but it hasn't seemed to...

Any other ideas?

Mark... Have you tried making a very basic boot floopy with just the 3-4
necessary MS-DOS boot files, and trying the BIOS ugrade from that?

Method one: With blank unformatted FD in drive, type 'sys A:' (without
quotes) from a MS-DOS window.

Method two: Right-click on A: drive in My Computer, select 'Format', and
then choose 'Copy system files only'.

Maybe you're still having problems with the memory managers on the full
Windows boot FD even after disabling them.

[LIB] Slightly OT - BIOS Upgrade Fuji B142 Problem

Subject: Slightly OT - BIOS Upgrade Fuji B142 Problem

Hi,

Even though this is not about my Libby 110CThope one of the great minds
on this list can please advise anyway... ;-)

Trying to upgrade the BIOS on my ol' Fujitsu B142 from what's installed now
(v1.02) to the newest version I found on the Korean Fujitsu support webpage,
v1.03. From what I understand this newer BIOS will allow me to upgrade OS to
WinXP if I want. There's also a new touchscreen driver upgrade to go with
it.

So far, no go

Here's what's happened so far...

1) Put BIOS files on a floppy

2) Booted up from Win98 boot floppy into Safe Mode, DOS prompt

3) At prompt, typed: phlash platform.bin

  Got PhoenixPhlash Error Message:

"Cannot flash when memory managers (e.g. HIMEM) are present"

4) Somehow disabled memory managers on boot disk and tried again.

  Got PhoenixPhlash Error Message:

  "File Close failed on BIOS.ROM"

Any suggestions??

Thanks,

Mark

I do have the upgrade and will do that tonight when I get home.

IIRC, It doesn't look anything like the module for the 50CT.

I looked it up once and the 64MB module is the same as for another Toshiba
laptop, and a lot cheaper if ordered for that laptop instead of for a
Libretto. But I already had mine, came with the machine, so never really
followed through with that.

I'll take a couple of photos and note the details and send it in. Probably
have to send the photos directly to people as I don't think you can post
them to the list. Aren't attachments frowned upon on most email lists?

While you're in there - does your machine have RAM upgrade? If yes could
you photograph and/or get the model number - I am interested to see if it
could be made to fit a CT110 as I believe the 1100v had the ability to carry
more RAM and a couple of people have suggested the memory module might fit a
CT110 - Thanks in advance (if you get a picture, you can e-mail to

Hi Thom,

I've disassembled my 1100v enough to remove the drive and it is not very
difficult. Not as easy as for my old 50CT, but still pretty easy. The case
on the 1100v comes apart easier than the one on the 50CT.

Have not tried upgrading the bios.

Greetings! It's my first post! I've had my 1100v (and a 70ct as well)
since 2000.

I'm getting ready to put a larger drive in the 1100v, and hopefully install
a dual boot of win2k and Linux.

I've ordered a 7200rpm 40gb drive, hoping that'll perk up the performance
for win2k a bit. I disassembled it a bit, just to get an idea of how
difficult it will be to get the drive out, and it looks none-too easy. Not
like the 50/70 anyway.

Either way, the bios on this box claims to be version 7.20, and I've seen
(on a German site) version 7.30. I'm not sure I want to flash my bios from
some random internet site. Has anyone with an 1100v upgraded their bios?
Will 7.20 run Win2k without major headaches?

Thanks in advance!

-Thom

Yeah, my machine has the 64mb module, which brought the total ram up to
128mb. When my drive arrives, and I tear the poor thing apart again,
I'll take plenty of pictures.

Subject: Bios Upgrade for 1100V?

-Thom

The HD in the 1100 is not easy to get to. You'll have to disassemble it
partway, hinge one side up and get enough room to pull out the HD from between
the top and bottom halves.

You can also check Toshiba Japan's website for information on this and the
latest BIOS versions. Use bablefish.altavista.com to translate.

  I'd pickup the Western Digital 9.09W EZ-Drive 9.09W that installes EZ-BIOS
overlay 9.06 at:
  http://160.87.24.223/ezdrv909.zip

  and install that first.

I've used this one for months on my L110 with big HD and it works fine.

Also, the most sensible and reliable one I've tried because it's just works,
IMO.

Use the manual install choice if you desire...

  --

For me, simply avoid the entire 1010-1040 cylinder section on the HD to avoid
having the BIOS hibernation data being written to the 8.4GB area over your
data. That means having two partitions for a big HD, but for me, I spent the
time to walk the HD with WinHEX to locate the hibernation data on my HD after
installing it new to make sure my data was safe.

You can do the same test yourself to double check.

  1) install EZ-BIOS, partition a small 1GB primary partition, install just
Windows, WinHEX and any free HD space zeroing utility.

  2) Open up Notepad, write in any unique text string you can search on later,
eg "Libretto Rules!", and hibernate to disk.

  3) Restore from hibernation, then use WinHex to search the entire HD for
"Libretto Rules!". You can have it start at cylinder 1000 because on your HD,
it will most likely be near the 8.4GB boundary as well. Scroll back and forth
once you've found the text string to find out where the uppper and lower
cylinder limits are, then add a few dozen more just to be safe.

  4) Otherwise, simply avoid anything at the 8.4GB boundary and partition
around the 1010-1040 cylinders like I did.

The floppy drive controller is, mostly, housed in a PCMCIA card made by Y-E
Data (I say mostly because there are smarts in the laptop that are
dedicated to the FDD and allow it to be used at boottime before the PCMCIA
slots are actually enabled). That driver is available for download from the
Toshiba website. I recommend that all the available drivers for the OS
you're using be downloaded and installed ... certainly all the ones for
Win9x for both the L50/70 and the L100/110 seem to fix more problems than
they cause ... I can't speak for them under NT or 2k however as I'm not too
familiar with them in those circumstances.

>But, I went into Bios and set the values to default,
>reboot and it worked :):):) upgrade done.

Probably tried to boot from the wrong place ... at least its worked now.
When you did the flash, did you do the boot method or did you use the F12
method?

>I decided to do the overlay with win98se, what overlay
>should I use? the HD is a toshiba. I have Max Blast by Maxtor.

I've not heard anything negative about EZ-Bios and it certainly seems in
wider use than any other drive overlay (judging by the amount of support it
has amongst other programs). Except, I *think* I heard somewhere that Max
Blast is in fact EZ-Bios under a different name anyway ... can someone
confirm or deny?

>What I'm going have a problem with is the Hibernation??
>what do I do first overlay or hibernation?

Umm ... like I said, hibernation is built into the BIOS.

Taking account of hibernation whilst using an overlay and with multiple
operating systems has been discussed many times before, a browse through
the archives should turn up more than enough information to satisfy your
desire for knowledge on this subject. Make sure you follow threads to their
conclusions to make sure you're getting the whole picture.

You need a floppy disk to complete the BIOS update. There is no other way
around. The program you download should automatically create a bootable
floppy disk for you. You boot off that floppy and the BIOS upgrade proceeds
automatically.

You can't update Libretto's BIOS without a floppy drive.

Just ran the utility and it will create a bootable floppy for you (has to be
720K floppy if I remembered correctly. If you can't find one, you can tape
over one of the holes on regular 1.44M floppy to let drive think it is
720k). Then boot your machine off the floppy and watch the BIOS updates
automatically.

Unless you're going to install Win2k, 8.0 BIOS does not give you any other
improvement. It's a Win2k compatibility upgrade.

Remember everytime you upgrade your BIOS, you run a chance to failure and
the result will be your machine became useless.

Bios Upgrade

Subject: Bios Upgrade

I have a 110Ct and have downloaded the ver 8.00 bios from the Toshiba site
onto a floppy and unzipped it. My 110 seems to be working well but, I
figured I'd do the upgrade. Only thing is that the instruction book does not
give any instructions on doing this. Any instructions will be helpful. Also,
in monitoring the threads I have begun to wonder whether the Librettos are
somewhat fragile or finicky.

RE: BIOS Upgrade 100CT?

Decent ACPI power management support, I believe. The 7.xx BIOSes were
functional under Win98, and 8.00 added true ACPI support so w2k would work.

Heh, yes I'm lagging trememdously in replying... =)
So I got my Lib 100 used, and it's running BIOS 6.4 and Windows ME. I'm not
encountering any problems, so being of the philosophy "if it ain't broke,
don't fix it," I let this email slide for a bit.
What exactly does upgrading the BIOS do which is supposedly necessary for
running the newer versions of Windows?

If you want to install Win98, you need BIOS 7.0. If you want to install
Win2000, you must have BIOS 8.0. If you stay with your Win95, no need to
play with your BIOS.

BIOS Upgrade 100CT?

2001-03-12 Thread George Waller

From: "George Waller" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: BIOS Upgrade 100CT?

I bought my 100CT about 3yrs ago and wondered if there would be an advantage in
getting a BIOS update... I notice on Tosh BBS that there are following versions:
6.4,6.5 and ACPI BIOS 7.0,7.20,7.3 and 8.00 - my OS in Win95. I do not understand what
the difference between the above versions is (ACPI??) and can someone advise how I
install the update (e.g. I presume this does not require reinstall of windows but how
will it effect other settings?)

George
