forcing SystemStartBracket after startStaff

Dear friends, 

I'm really stuck with this issue : I have to engrave several variations
separated by a short white space but without any line break between
them. 

Thanks to Eluze, the \markup{} trick
(http://lilypond-french-users.1298960.n2.nabble.com/Forcer-SystemStartBracket-apres-un-stopStaff-td7580894.html#none)
is OK for a single page and quite usefull. But page breaks make it
collapse...

So I'm trying to use stopStaff/startStaff and I'm stuck with the
staffGroup systemStartBracket after startStaff.

Does anyone know a magic trick such as \once \override
StaffGroup.SystemStartBracket.break-visibility = #all-visible, but
working ?

Another trick would be to change BarLine after startStaff into
something merging \bar"|" and a bracket...

text markup underlining

Hi list !

Coming from the french list where we are several to seeking a simple way of 
underlining text :

Is there a simple way to underline text in markups (and everywhere else, such 
as headers) ?

I've seen in the list something like \\underline, but it doesn't work at all. 
I'd be very surprised
to learn that something as simple as \bold or \italic doesn't exist for 
underlining...

This subdivision is based on the beatLength property, so the first
step to a solution is
\set Timing.beatLength = #(ly:make-moment 1 12)

However, then the automatic beaming algorithm will unfortunately
split the beams so you get one beam per beat. Ufortunately, I didn't
find any way to persuade LilyPond to keep longer beams, but it's
probably possible in some way. You can always specify the beams
manually, though

\break dosen`t work

I've not been through all your score, but I know that break pb are often tied 
to paging pb. I mean
you have to be very carefull with multiple voices : they have to be "breakable" 
at the same time and
the same place.

the grace aspect changes.
Actually, I'm not an expert in override, so...

1.  when you have one word for mutliple notes without slur, you have to use _ 
for each note.
For example : Gott over a4 b c d. You write in addlyrics {Gott _ _ _ }

2. For spacing, I haven't found out how to fit with the original text, sorry !

hi all !

I'm trying to choose a language to learn programming. i know, it depends en 
what I want dto do with
it : but I don't have particular project on my table.

So I was wondering if a good idea wouldn't be to use the same language as 
lilypond, which is C++, i
think.

My questions are :

- is C++ the language used for lilypond sources ?
- are the different tools, espacially in §12, but also in all chaging default 
tricks, based upon C++
?

Well, if I learn to use C++, will I be able to help, in a few years, lily dev ?

That's a draft which will be removed as soon as it is integrated in the
official docs.

If managing the translation team means telling what should be
translated, managing commits to the git source repository, helping
translators with technical aspects, I am one of the French managers.

More actually, the Translations Big Boss is one of LilyPond authors, Jan
Nieuwenhuizen, who is currently working on integration of translated
docs into the official docs.

So, for any French translation question, please send a email to the
lilypond-user-fr list first; then, if a complex or technical issue that
I can't solve appears, we'll forward the discussion to the appropriate
English-speaking list.

Lilypond Docs wouldn't be

doc, for example ;o)

So the question is :

- does any french user is ok to translate the doc ?
- is a lily author ok to manage a translation team ?

"tirer.eps" with "create a
box..." and "convert text into..." activated (I'm not sure of my english 
translation of the
menus...).

There's no need for a music function here, why not simply do

stemLess = \once \override Voice.Stem #'transparent = ##t

Also, since you use \once in the previous definition, there's no need
to do a revert later.

Using 2.9 on XP.

I'm beginning to engrave Marais' Viol suites (since I've understood eps files 
inclusion...).

I'm stuck with this : in the fac simile, inside notes of a chord are stemless. 
So I have to get
something like

So I've decided to get in function construction, and I've tried this for a 
simple piece of music :

Thanks for your answer.
Actually, the beaming is ok for the upper line that links all the notes 
together.

The pb is still that the lower beaming line that should link the two a16 is 
broken.

I think that i haven't been precise enough so far :

I want to get the same thing with these two scores, for the beaming only :

{a8 [a16 a16 a8]}

and

{a8 [a16*2 a16 a8]}

I'm now wondering if it's really possible.

The spacer here breaks the beam; you don't need it anyway, the following
code

{ a8[ a16*2 a16 a8] }

should do you what you want (you want the beam to start on a8, don't
you?)

I have managed to invert the order of the notes, but I still can't get over 
with this stem
orientation pb.

Your trick doesn't work in my way : I still get a16*2 stem on the right AND a16 
on the right too, so
the primary stem lines are linked together with the whole [ ] part, but the 
secondary lines of the
16 are still separated, each of them on the riht side of the note. Maybe i'm 
confused in the
vocabulary : i think I should use Beam (horizontal line) instead of Stem which 
is the vertical line
?

If you explain why you use the s or hidden note in the first place, then
maybe it's easier to propose a workaround.

you'll find something to solve this pb !

Actually, I'm stuck with this pb while engraving baroque music, even if I do 
admit that huge
improvement has been done since I began to use lily (bravo !). Especially music 
for the viol. There
are special symbols in Marais' pieces that I can't reproduce. Is there some way 
to create the symbol
or is it too complicated for non-programmers ? Is it possible to scan the 
symbol, and insert it in
the score ? etc... ?

I don't know if my question make sense, but I've tried at least ...

ossia trick solved

I've been working hard ;o) on my ossia trick, and I've found how to reproduce a 
french cantata
excerpt.
Using lily 2.8.3 on XP.

What I have to engrave :
The piece of music is a french recitative, introduced buy the viol on a single 
line (10 measures).
Then, we have the recitative itself (viol + voice)
Then the viol alone again
Then the voice and the viol.
The last 9 measures are played only buy the viol.

I have a viol, a voice, and lyrics.

When the viol plays alone, the voice line on the fac simile disappear.

How i managed this :
I have used the 8.3.2 hiding staves trick, which is described for instruments 
without lyrics.
Here's the structure of my ly file :

- I'd like to have the whole score between << >> but I had to split the score 
into two parts to get

- the order of the staves is important to get the lyrics below the soprano and 
not below the bass
(THIS is the main point I've working on !)

I'm engraving a french cantata which begins with a "récitatif".
This piece begins itself with a bass line alone, and the voice enters after few 
measures.

I've been using \stopStaff and \startStaff, which works very well, except one 
thing : I still have
clef and time signature at each time, so the soprano line is only half hidden !

figured bass : font size

And here I go again with the figured bass stuff !  Actually, I think lily can 
be perfect with this,
so I'de like to know how to use it properly...

I have got this output :

much to little.

can I adjust the size of each font separatly ?

figured bass : flat over figure

explanation !

Pfiou : it's been a long time since last time I wrote here. So happy new year

I have writtte some renaissance song, 4 voices, without any barlines, neither 
time signature.

All is right, except the fact that I only have a long long system that comes 
over the page and
continues out of the paper...

I've tried to put \bar "", but it doesn't work at all.

So does anyone knows how to force "back to the next line" ?

Well, as 2.6 is _not_ using LateX any more, it cannot. Now Lilypond 2.6
can handle accented characters, but in order for that to work you must
save your files using UTF-8 encoding, rather than Latin1. Give it a try,
I think this will solve your problems.

Ah... it's been a long long time since I haven't been writting in this list !
As I've directly jumped from 2.2 to 2.6, I have some little pb to solve. Maybe 
the answer is
somewhere already, but I can't find it.

Still using XP (...) and lily 2.6.

I'm using accented characters (like é, û, and è) in my header, and Lily doesn't 
translate them. I
must be a LateX pb, but I can't make it right...

Any help, please ?

midi with multiple scores

Working on lily 2.4 win XP.

I have a full score splitted like this :

So I have 4 score blocks, and 4 midi block.

When I run lily, I only get one midi file, corresponding to the last score 
block.

How can I get a full midi file, or at least 4 midi files ?

It has benn said several times, but I understand your misunderstanding.

You have probably used Cygwin to install lily.
You have also saved test.ly in a directory c\:\myfiles, for example.

Click on the cygwin icon : il will open the famous "terminal window".
Make :

cd c:
cd myfiles
lilypond test.ly

It will end with :

test.pdf created.

Then close the terminal and fetch your test.pdf in your directory myfiles.
Click on it, and that's it.

To create your own lily files, just use test.ly : you can copy it with another 
name, and start to
write some code into it, following the doc.

Lilypond has no GUI, so maybe that's why you're so confused.
It's quite easy to use, anyway... you have to type the score with a text
editor, save it (e.g. test.ly) and then run lilypond
on the file (lilypond test.ly)  to get a nice sheet of music.
As far as i know, if you use windows you have to use the 'cygwin'
software to be able to run lilypond. Maybe
you already installed it?

Dear list,

Looking at the archives, this seems to have come up before, but I can't
seem to get a working solution. What is the best way to get the titles
of movements centred? At the moment I am using "\book \score \header
{ piece = "piece1"}" as outlined in the manual to seperate movements,
but of course this gives left-aligned formatting.

one trick that Mats has given to us, for Lily 2.4 on XP (what is your version 
?) is :

if you have :

\bar "|."
c4\ff

you can do :

\bar "|."
s8 c4*3/4 \ff (see 5.1.10 of the lily doc)

for the c and its ff  is moved a bit on the right.

If the note that it is attached to needs extra space also I'm not sure what
your solution would be. But if the note is in the correct position and you
just need to move the dynamic mark, try putting the markup after the note or
the note after that. Sometimes I find things can be tweaked by just entering
them in a different position in the code. Hope this helps.

It could be that way, but I have to move it vertically... and the thing is that 
when you use s64,
you have to pout it in all the staves, and make a maesure with no fixed measure 
length...

Maybe just as dishonest but not so visually obvious is something I'm
temporarily doing until I learn a better way:  Displace the markups by
an s64 or s128.

On XP lily2.4.2, I use to define :

tr = \markup {\musicglyph #"scripts-rcomma"}

and make : \once \override TextScript #'extra-offset = #'(2.1 . -1.7) a8^\tr, 
for example, which
puts a comma just after the note (ancoent way to indicate a trill in baroque 
music).

the thing is that I can't understand what the -1.7 respresents exactly. I 
always indicate this
number in a relative way (considering other tr around). But I can't say "for an 
A, the override is :
\override TextScript #'extra-offset = #'(2.1 . -1.7) , for a B :  \override 
TextScript
#'extra-offset = #'(2.1 . -2.5)" , and so on.

Can anyone explain to me what these numbers really mean ?

I am using LilyPond 2.4.2 under Cygwin (Windows XP).


When compiling files it needs about 20 seconds for one file with only a few 
notes! Is there an
option to speed up this process? The output should only be a .dvi-file. At the 
moment I got *.tex,
*.pdf, *.dvi ...


I tried the --output=file option telling LilyPond to place the output only to 
the file testfile.dvi,
but the other files are created too, which is very time consuming, I think!


Is it possible to compile only files that have been changed? So it would be 
possible to put
different Staffs into different files and compile them seperately and 
afterwards put them together
to only one big file. So, the different other files need not to be recompiled 
when compiling the big
one...

making programs

my lilybook pb solved

Just a few words to say that I found an issue to my lilybook pb (invokinf lily 
didn't work).

I've suppressed the paper block and the \score item (written in lily2.5 doc : 
no { in the lilypond
block inserted in latex).
And it does work, even if I have to get rid of a layout pb.

Am I wright ?

adjusting stem length

Working on XP with lily 2.4.2

I have to adjust the stem length of several notes beamed together.

I've tried :

\once \override Stem #'beamed-lengths = #'(4) a8 [b c d e f]

but it doesn't do anything, whereas

 \override Stem #'beamed-lengths = #'(4) a8 [b c d e f]

is OK.

Is there a way to make sort of a  \override Stem #'beamed-lengths = ##f after 
the notes to go back
to a normal and automatic stem length ?

Another thing is that I don't quite understand the syntax of this  \override 
Stem
#'beamed-lengths...

pagebreaks with 2.4.2

Even if there has been several discussions upon this subject, I still don't 
understand how to use
\pagebreak.

When I moved to 2.4.2 on XP, I converted my 2.2.5 .ly and the \newpage within 
the header block in my
main .ly became \\page break :

I must admit that on this point, the manual is not very helpfull for me...

Hello Ruud, list,

I've discussed XP installation problems with Ruud off-list, and wanted
to share my findings.

This is what I did:
- I installed a clean version of Windows XP.
- I ran the latest setup.exe from http://www.cygwin.com
- Selected a 'random' server close to me (easynet.be, IIRC)
- I opened the Publishing package, and I clicked Lilypond (it showed
'skip' to start with).

The first version shown was 2.4.2-1. ANother click showed version 2.2.
(something).
Apparently, some packaging bugs have been fixed.

Also, other packages in the list were selected (I didn't pay attention
to which ones, I 'just' needed to check a correct installation
behaviour).

Then, Setup downloaded a few updates packages from the Net (most of
the packages were already up-to-date in my installation folder), and
started installing Cygwin. Lilypond was correctly installed as well.

When running Lilypond, it complained about 2 fonts not being
available, but that was about it. It did give me the output I
expected.

So, unfortunately, I can't be of much assistence in the Windows XP
corner, since no problems can be reproduced.

Does re-downloading the latest Setup.exe, and re-running it (and
checking Lilypond's version while you do that) help?

Maybe 2 suggestions :

first, there's a little mistake in doc 2.5 :
"It uses \version statements in the input files to detect the old version 
number. In most cases, to
upgrade your input file it is sufficient to run
covert-ly -e myfile.ly" .

secondly, it should be written, to my mind, that convert-ly *.ly converts all 
the files of the
current folder.

You should definitely not remove any .ly~ file until you have made sure
that the updated file gives the expected results, since the .ly~
contains a copy of your original file (before the conversion) and since
convert-ly is not always fool-proof.

It seems that the formulation in the manual has already been changed in
the version for LilyPond 2.5. Take a look at
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.5/Documentation/user/out-www/lilypond/Invoking-convert_002dly.html
and send a comment to the mailing list if you have suggestions for
further clarifications.

actually, all is wright : after the last ? message, I've pressed enter untill 
there were nor more
message. Then I made what is written on lilypond manual and I have now my pdf.

Just one thing : on lily manual is written :

$ latex lilybook
 lots of stuff deleted
 $ xdvi lilybook.tex



To convert the file into a nice PDF document, run the following commands
 $ dvips -Ppdf -u +lilypond lilybook.dvi
 $ ps2pdf lilybook.ps

The text in red is missing and for a newby like me...

For the record, you can easily cut and paste from the Cygwin window,
see the instructions for Win NT at http://cygwin.com/faq/faq_3.html#SEC52

The solution for you is to rerun setup.exe and install the packages
tetex-base and tetex-extra, which gives you a more complete TeX
environment. By default, an installation of LilyPond will only give you
the package tetex-tiny which contains a minimal stripped down version
of the TeX environment.

creating objects

I'm trying to traslate to a global score pieces of viol music written by Marin 
MARAIS. The thing is
that I ahve to use markups that don't exist in lily2.2.5. Is it possible to 
draw those markups and
insert them in my pdf ?

Or would it be more simple to scan those object and insert them in the pdf 
itself ?

(1) I can't figure out how it looks like, just because I have Lily 2.2...

(2) I've used a trick that doesn't have anything to do with figured bass, 
something like :


e2-"\\embeddedps{0.1 setlinewidth 2.5 9 moveto 4 0.5 rlineto stroke}"

which draws a line from the bass note to another point  (warning : lily 2.0 !). 
And it looks exactly
like professional figured bass

It seems that there were a lot of questions on this subject in the mailling 
list. I haven't tried to
resolve this pb...

I'm re-posting this one (plus other questions), as I'm not sure it
went through (and the archive search engine is again not working
at the moment: Fri Jan  7 12:31:31 CET 2005).

I've just installed 2.4.2 because "Regression tests"
(http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.4/input/regression/out-www/lily-347603903.ly)
showed that strings now appear in the output (there was a blank instead
in v2.2.6)

I thought I could use that feature for some missing support in the figured
bass notation.  Namely, the piece sometimes contain a "x" (cross) before
the figure.
I tried

  <"x"4>

but, although the string is "glued" to the digit, it appears in the output
as if there was a space between them (hence the "x" is printed above the "4").

Whereas, with

  <"x4">

the layout is right but the digit is printed with font and size different
from the other figures.
What would be a workaround?

How to create a thin line (indicating that the chord is sustained throughout
the measure)?
In the archive, a trick with postscript was proposed (which I can't find right
now...); I tried it within the "\figuremode" but it didn't work ("junking
TextScript event"...).  Is there a way to include the incantation in the
vicinity of the figured bass code?

In an expression like

  <7 _+>

the sharp sign is not aligned vertically with the digit "7" (but slightly too
much to the right, because of the space "_" I assume), which is not very 
aesthetic.
Is it supposed to be so?  Is there some tweak to move it back to the the
appropriate position?

to have it very close to the notes. Actually, I've never used it with other 
figures !

Is there an "\override" (for v2.2.6) to make the figured bass
numbers closer to the annotated staff?

I tried
\override FiguredBass.BassFigure #'padding = #-4
but it didn't seem to do anything.

Hi,

At the moment, I'm using Lilypond to transcribe some handwritten arrangements
to clearly readable sheets of music for the choir I'm singing in.
The satb.ly template is a good start for that.
Support from the mailing list has also been great so far!
Question: does anybody have successfully used OCR for recreating music?

Reading all the messages of lily users, I think that most of the users met in 
the mailing list use
Lily for copying music.
Sadly, the scores published nowadays don't mention the apps used, so that's 
indded very difficult to
have a good average for this purpose.
It may be possible to ask the mailing list the use of Lily that each of us 
have, through a classical
quizz (who are you, what do you use Lily for, etc.).

Searching the mailing list, I find the following:

The corresponding property for notes with beams
is called 'beamed-lengths'.

An example:
\override Stem #'beamed-lengths = #'(2.6 2.6 3.2)

These are the beams lenghts for 8th, 16th, ... notes.

I'm terribly sorry, but I've tried several tweaks to manage to move the length 
of beamed notes,
particulary \override Stem   #'length = #  but it doesn't work.
Maybe it's because I have beamed notes, like :

\override Stem  #'length = #35  b8 [\clef alto b'16 b] ?

This doesn't place the tuning before the clef, key, and time

polyphony and barlines

It seems, with lily2.2, that lily doesn't accept in polyphony differences betwenn 
staves with the
barline location. I'm typesetting some ancient music and barlines are not located in 
the same way
from a voice to another.
How can I make lily ignore such differences ?

Just go to the documentation for version 2.2.6 at www.lilypond.org,
click on "Regression Tests" and you'll find it!
However, it doesn't answer your previous question. I'll take a look
when I get time, I made a solution several years ago but I suspect
it will require some work to get it going for the current LilyPond.

Actually, it has the same shape (noteheads without stem. But it has to indicate the 
tuning of each
of the 6 strings.
So ambitus doesn't match.

Did you try running convert-ly on any of your old files?

You could also take a look at the example called size16.ly in
Regression Tests.

Hello,
Thank you very much for this program. My daughter can't wait to get her
hands on it. Unfortunately I'm not having any luck with it.
I have windows XP Pro
I downloaded the file and test.ly - it appears in the web page and I have
saved it as test.ly

When I run it XP asks what program, I chose Acrobat as this is the only pdf
viewer I know. It then says it is an unsupported file format.

Is there any thing else I can do?

I have this sheet of music with the following set-up:

Music (in two staffs), Lyrics and Chrods.

In pure essence I get it right on the paper, however the chords are
below the music (violin staff, above the bass staff) just above the lyrics.

What I'd like most however is to have the chords above the violin staff
and the lyrics between the two music staffs... what could it be I'm
doing wrong?

I'm not really at home atm, and have very limited time... if it would
make the case much easier I can provide examples of course...
But I'm thinking of it now and the problem is so minor that I'd very
soon forget it anyway...

I have an answer for the lines after figures. I've done this on Lily2.0 and win XP, 
with a Marais
piece for the viol.
For these lines, I used the proprety e2-"\\embeddedps{0.1 setlinewidth 2.5 9 moveto 4 
0.5 rlineto
stroke}", which draws a line from the note e. As far as I can remmeber, 0.1 is the 
thickness of the
line, 2.5 9 the start point from the note e, and 4 0.5 the end of the line. Note that 
the line is
drawn from the notes, and not from the figures. I haven't tried this trick on lily2.2 
yet. But I'm
sure you can get it in the regression tests.

For your sharp pb, I must admit I have the same !

Good Morning all,

Iâve been playing around with Lilypond for quite a while now. Iâve been
evaluating it type setting quite a variety of scores â mainly baroque works
instrumental and vocal using both ancient time signatures and notes and have
found the output to be excellent. I've even started using Linux-Fedora (a
big leap from windows) so I can use the latest versions of lilypond.

The only reservations that I have now is the figured bass. I have looked up
several questions people have about this and found a variety of different
figuring which does not seem to work well together.

My questions are these:

Proper alignment of figures eg.

Itâs most important that the sharp on the three be on the left of the number
and not on the right so as not to confuse a sharpened 3rd resolution after
the current figures.

I have tried several markups which never quite able to match these figures
(the figured bass context is too weak to provide the complexity of some
figured bass settings)

The other question is the thin line representing a holding of the previous
part of the figured bass. ie. Some or all of the previous chord is held.

Eg.  5---
7   b6 the thin line (  ---  ) indicates that the
5th note should be held while adding the flattened 6th  or

6   _
5

indicating that the previous chord is to be heldâ. This can be held for
either for the next bass notes or a series of bass notes.

Does anyone have a full scheme/way of setting out a figured bass?

Any help in this matter would be appreciated. Are there any plans to
strengthen figured bass support? I would suggest that if there was then
lilypond would possibly be the best notation package available being able to
typeset all music. It might even rival SCORE (the mysterious notation
package that only âbiggerâ music publishing firms can seem to get their
hands on).

I tried to answer your first question with the following solution, which
is to use \relative in your notes blocks, which should fixed the octaves
of you notes at source.
However, it doesn't work as I expected! It renders each part on separate
staff contexts!!?!?

Anybody know why?

contrary of \\Huge

Hi list !

A very simple question, with, for sure, a very simple answer !

I'de like to change the size of the copyright. I saw in the archives that

copyright = "\\Huge {blabla}" makes it... huge.
What is the contrary of Huge ? I tried \\Small, \\Tiny and \\Teeny, but it doesn't 
work !

I use this type of notation for baroc viol music, in which intermediate notes in a

A setting such as
\override Stem #'transparent =##t
will apply to the current Voice context and does certainly work.
However, in your example, you use the construct
<< {...} \\ {...} >>
which implicitly puts the two lines of music into separate
Voice contexts named "1" and "2", respectively.

The easiest is probably to just keep all the notes in the same
Voice context:
<<{a,2}{c}>> <<{a}{c}>>
Or even write these chords as chords instead of simultanous
voices:
\new Voice \relative c' {\voiceThree
   2 
}


Then, you probably shouldn't even make the stem transparent, since
LilyPond automatically will move the notes to the right in \voiceThree
to make it clear what notes belong where.


If you really want transparent stems and separate voices,
try:
<<{\override Stem #'transparent = ##t a,2}\\{\override Stem
#'transparent = ##t c}>> <<{a}\\{c}>>
Even though I would find it very difficult as a musician to
interprete that notation.

##t into
\override Staff.Stem #'transparent = ##t. But the whole notes have transparent stems, 
whereas I'd
like just the middle voice (voicethree) like this. And when I replace Staff by Voice, 
it doesn't do
anything.
