Re: Question about Global Mirror/XRC

2008-09-30 Thread Mary Anne Matyaz
1) Is 'XRC' and 'Global Mirror' the same thing? YES.
(2) I see questions posted in the past regarding 'GDPS/XRC' and z/VM
not supporting timestamps. That is correct, XRC of zVM systems does not
support timestamps, so you cannot recover to a sync'ed point in time, but
you
can just recover, from wherever you were.
Is 'GDPS/XRC' a special XRC for GDPS? SORTOF. There is GDPS, an IBM Global
Services
offerering that manages the SDMPLEX, and XRC, and then there is just XRC.
You can use GDPS and XRC, or you can just use XRC. GDPS requires Netview and
SA/390.

(3) Is there a version of XRC/Global Mirror that supports z/VM and
linux guests? Again, sortof. All versions support Linux guests, as Linux
does do timestamping. I don't think any version technically 'supports' z/VM
as it isn't timestamped, but in our experience, it works fine. But then
again, we are not a CMS user.

I recommend you just try it. Place some VM and Linux dasd in XRC, let them
copy, and then
do your XRECOVER and IPL off the tertiaries to test it out.

I don't know what TPC-R is. XRC is, put very simply, a long distance version
of PPRC. So if PPRC is working fine, XRC, or Global Mirror, should as well.

I am trying to get information on using global mirror with z/VM systems
and have a couple of pretty basic questions.

PPRC-XD working fine for z/VM and linux guests. z/VM and z/OS dasd are
in same DS8300 so would need same global mirror. Flashcopies on z/VM
(using a z/VM starter system) worked fine but now TPC-R is being tested
(windows PC with GUI). If anyone could help me find doc on setting up
global mirror so it can work for z/VM as well as z/OS it would be
greatly appreciated. Anyone else using TPC-R to perform dasd functions
 for z/VM?

Yes, since that is what will make the volume available to z/OS.

Actually, you can format any CP volume from z/OS. A user volume (one that
does NOT contain directory, T-disks, parm disks, paging, spooling, or
other CP-managed extents) can be formatted by ICKDSF CPVOLUME or INIT on
z/OS, as CP only looks at the volser on a standard VOL1 label.

For CP-owned disks, you should format it using ICKDSF CPVOLUME FORMAT.

I believe that CPVOLUME and INIT do not write the same style of VTOC. A
CPVOLUME will appear to have no available space. An INITed volume, OTOH,
appears empty except for the catalog. (I'm too lazy to test that theory.)
So while you CAN init with INIT, you SHOULD init with CPVOLUME.

Vexxing Rexx

2008-06-12 Thread Mary Anne Matyaz
Ok, first off, I know it's spelled vexing. But that doesn't look as nice. :)

I'm having fun with rexx today. First, I'll tell you the problem I'm trying
to solve, in case theres a better way, then I'll
tell you the problem I'm having in my rexx exec.

Problem: I have 50 some linuxes all sending their logs to
vmsysu:conlog:*linuxname.
*As it gets fuller, I'd like to know
which linux is spewing the most log. Right now I do a dirlist and go in to
each one looking for who has the most records.
I'd like to be able to total it up. Maybe even (gasp) write a report.
So I start with an itty bitty rexx exec. I'm just going to look at linux1
and try to total it. With apologies to Kris for my
atrocious rexx coding, here it is:

totrec = 0
SET FILESP CONLOG
ACCESS .LINUX1 K
'pipe (endchar ?)',
'CMS FLIST * * K (NOCLEAR | STEM SFSREC.';
Do i = 1 to sfsrec.0
parse var SFSREC.i FNAME FTYPE FMODE FRECL FLEN FREC FBLK FDT FTM
totrec = totrec + FREC
End
say 'LINUX1 Total Records: ' totrec
RELEASE K
Exit;

It seemed pretty simple to me. Of course it didn't work. So I tried some
PIPE commands in CMS.
PIPE CMS LISTF * * A | file list a works. Creates the file named FILE
LIST A
However,
PIPE CMS FLIST * * A | file list a doesn't work. Doesn't put it in
the file, but does display it on my screen.

Normally, I'd just go with the output of listf. However, it doesn't have
size info.

Any suggestions? Does FLIST not work in Pipes? How would I know that?
(Looked thru the rexx manual, pipes manual, cms cmds manual.)

Thanks as always!

I can also see the .LINUX1 giving REXX some trouble w/o quotes around the

Hi Tom. That looks to be just what I need, unfortunately, I can't download

As an update though, here's what the final product looks like:

'SET FILESP CONLOG'

Do i = 1 to rec.0
parse var rec.i vmname usernm ipaddr
 TOTBLK = 0

'CMS LISTFILE * * K (alloc noheader | STEM sfsrec.'
 Do j = 1 to sfsrec.0
parse var SFSREC.j FNAME FTYPE FMODE FRECL FLEN FREC FBLK
  TOTBLK = TOTBLK + FBLK
 End
 SET CMSTYPE RT'
say usernm ' Total Blocks: ' TOTBLK
End
'RELEASE K'
Exit;

MALINUX CTRL file looks like:

VMLPAR LINUX1 9.1.1.1
VMLPAR LINUX2 9.1.1.2

etc.
Note that this does not work with Address Command. :(

Thanks everyone. It's very nice to have rexx success.

What's in my spool?

2008-05-27 Thread Mary Anne Matyaz
Hello all. I have two VM LPARs, each with a mod9 spool. One is at 4%
utilization and one is at 26%. I have run SFPURGER and
perfkit option 7 shows nothing major on either. Both have several NSS's that
are the largest according to perfkit. Q RDR OPERATNS shows
no records for dumps. There are a few open linux consoles with 2-3K records
on LPAR2.
So what else can be using up spool in LPAR2? Granted, it's not an alarming
usage, but I'd like to know what else to watch for.

Thanks!

The only definitive reference I have comes from within oracle's metalink,
which you have to be signed up for:

Oracle Database on z/OS Support Status
The final patch set for Oracle Database 10g Release 2 will be the last
release Oracle delivers for the z/OS platform. Customers can continue to run
the terminal patchset release of Oracle Database 10g Release 2 on z/OS for
as long as they want with support options to meet both their current and
future needs. Oracle will not be delivering an Oracle Database 11g release
for z/OS.

Here's a link to a guy who blogged the metalink post:

It's ironic, isn't it, that the argument the AIX guy is using is the same
one we used against AIX and

them quick and agile, not having all those cumbersome extras. Add all that
stuff in and you get a much more complex system to run. That's what z/OS was

Re: Copying zVM and zLinux Logs to MVS GDG dataset

2007-09-20 Thread Mary Anne Matyaz
Someone in IBM had a paper that detailed this, basically called CONLOG. I'm
checking to see
if it's ok to post it. But basically, you you do a SPOOL CONS CONLOG START
EOF in each Linux's profile exec. Nightly, we do a 'bump' by issuing a SPOOL
CONS CLOSE then the SPOOL CONS CONLOG START EOF again to all the linuxes.
This sends the log to an ID that you set up called CONLOG. In CONLOG then
who is constantly running, you do a WAKEUP function (WAKEUP +2(RDR)) that
wakes up when reader comes in, and processes it. From there you can receive
it, then FTP. (Here's my FTP):
queue 'userid password'
queue 'put profile.exec VM.GDG(+1)
queue 'quit'
'FTP 9.1.1.1'

 happened.
We do this today for the zOS console messages.

My zVM sys programmer responded with this comment
Not very easily. Each item running under z/VM has it's own log and one
operator log. With Linux, I set up a seperate log. To get the task you
need to issue a close console command for each individual task. With
that, it gets spooled to the PRT queue. From there we need to get it to
the RDR queue then to a mini-disk. From there we would have an ftp job to
grab the listing and put it into a GDG. The problem is to get something
scheduled to trigger the close console and to then to transfer it to each
 queue then the minidisk.

Has anyone out there come up with a easier automated way to cut the logs
 and willing to share?

 Thank you

We haven't really tested the GDPS Automation part, but XRC is working pretty
well for us, and we have brought up VM and Linuxes at the D/R site. GDPS
WILL automate the activation of the LPAR so as long as you have everything
set to come up automagically from there you should be fine.
The only thing I'm still having trouble with is doing an SFS FILESERV

crashing the SDMplex, but IBM has opened an APAR for that.

Background...

I started with SLES7 on z/VM 4.2 on a MP3000 H30.
Now up to SLES9 on z/VM 5.2 on a z/890 plus an IFL.

The initial, first, worst fight I had, had to do with installing from
some media, on some other foreign (foreign to me, being a VM and VSE
type for 30+ years).

I first used Win/98 and mounted CDs there. I think I was using Samba.
Eventually, I got the networking issues straight and I could install
SLES7, which I did over an over (practice makes perfect and I was trying
out different machine configurations). This was on a 10 mb LAN. 3-4
hours and it was done (I would be doing other work during this time.)

A year passed.

Time for some more images. SLES8 was now available.
However, I was now on Win/2000. Samba didn't work so well. Many days
of fighting this.
Finally went to the FTP route. Got a freebie FTP server, and had many
trials and tribulations in using it. Networking isn't my knowledge
base. And SLES8 had different install options and features. Some nice,
some good, but it all looked different. It took a lot of time to
realize that I did know what I was doing. However, it still took me a
long time to give up on the Samba option and go to a FTP server.

Another couple years passed.

SLES9 was now available. FTP didn't seem to work anymore. I never
figured out what the problem was. But I could still install SLES8. So
I created a FTP server from SLES8 to store the SLES9 images on. SLES9
didn't seem to install much differently then SLES8, and it was much
faster (no vswitch at that time, just routed thru VM's TCPIP stack).

We need something, that can take a dummy like myself and drop down a
Linux image, preconfigured and preloaded with the Linux images so a
person can do the install from a fast, reliable place. And then
documentation on how to install a Linux image, based on this
preconfigured/preloaded server. Plus, documentation on how to upload
new Service Packs and new releases to this server.

About as close to free beer as you can get, without actually having a
beer G.

Some of the many problems I hit, besides changing PC platforms:

Some PC based software didn't understand the long file format of Linux.
I think that was mostly on Win/98. I don't know if there is any PCs
now that have that type of problem.

The default FTP server in SLES8 is configured not to allow you to use
that FTP server as a source for a SLES install. You have to know you
need to change the FTP config file to allow this. My notes are:

Joe /etc/vsftpd.conf
Uncomment:
Local_enable = yes
Write_enable = yes
Save

Chroot_local_user=yes
Required for ftp server for zLinux install During installation, when
entered *s390x/sles9root*, it gets translated to */s390x/sles9root*.
For install to work, it must remain in the suse9 subdirectory and not
changed to be off of root.

All the Redbooks on installing zLinux, assume that the servers you are
using to install from, are properly setup.

Well, this dummy, in which my FTP server experience was limited to the
VM FTP server and the default configuration for the CSI FTP server on
VSE, there was a lot of knowledge that had to be gained for a Linux FTP
server, in order to make it useful.

So I was in a Catch-22. My knowledge wasn't sufficient on FTP servers
to configure one properly. However, to have a FTP server running to
test with, I needed a FTP server to be running.

Many times, I put it down and went to other projects for a few months.

Then, comes firewalls.
From my PC, I can basically do anything I need to.
But not from the mainframe.

YOU (Yast Online Update), just isn't going to work. The network guys
are Windows oriented.
They also have very major concerns about viruses. Rightly so, as when a
virus hits our PC network (4,000 PCs in a City Wide WAN), it takes
months to fix the problems.

For access outside of the firewall, they want antivirus software
installed. Which we don't have. What I keep thinking of, is some
Windows based software, that can pull all the new fixes from Novell, and
send them up to a mirror residing on zLinux for distirbution via YOU
to my zLinux images. Doable...yes. Do I have time? No. It would be
nice to have a drop in solution. And yes, we do have a Novell
maintenance contract (and we had a SUSE one prior to that).

Next topic: TAPE DRIVES

Damn it. We are mainframe. We have Ficon and Escon attached tape
drives. They may be behind a VTS. They may be managed by a robotic
unit.

Re: shutdown -r now on VM 5.1

2007-05-31 Thread Mary Anne Matyaz

Brad,
PTF UM31428 is not marked in error, so if it did not fix your problem either
IBM isn't aware of a continuing problem or is is possible you are not using
the appropriate load module? If not, suggest you open a pmr.

I saw a reference to this issue early last year on this list (before I

44 loop. Was this fixed in 5.1, and does anyone know the PTF/APAR that
fixed it? I don't see this behavior in VM 5.2.

Thanks,

Re: IBM GDPS and zVM DASD

Robert,
I'm not familiar with hyperswap at all, but GDPS/XRC should run fine with
VM. We have tested IPLing VM from the tertiary disks at a DR site that were
xrc'ed.

Can you tell me what versions and levels of the various opsys involved are
required? May be moot, since we run CSE.

Z/OS 1.6 with GDPS 3.2 and Z/VM 5.2 with RHEL 4.3.

Probably the first thing I should have told you is that it's Geographically
Dispersed Parallel Sysplex. :)

David is correct, Netview and SA/390 are required for GDPS.

Re: FDR backups of Linux volumes?

2006-12-13 Thread Mary Anne Matyaz

Also - is it normal for the volume serial to be 0X followed by the device
number?

fdasd or dasdfmt, one, will by default set the volser to 0Xdevno.
So, yes.

:Warning ON
VM Newbie Answering a question

We do a dasdfmt command with the -l option to add a volume name. Example:

dasdfmt -b 4096 -y -f /dev/dasdb -l vol001

Now when you view it from MVS it shows as vol001

Re: backing up a logical volume

Let me add another twist for you gurus...imagine you have a 2T database and
the veritas solution over the network takes too long. You don't have any
tapes on VM and you want to use the VTS on MVS. What would you do?

What are you running for backup on the mainframe

 something in place that
can be slightly expanded to cover your Linux guests,
 then that would
probably be a much easier path to follow.

Subject: backing up a logical volume

We are running linux on z/vm. We are going to be
backing up up our db2 and custom areas on a daily
basis, and place it on a logical vol within the
 linux
server, that isn't a problem. What management wants
 to
do is to back that data up daily to some kind of
 media
and ship it offsite. The lgv will be ~30g(15
 3390-3).
Currently we backup the linux prod servers only on
Friday nights as we have time to shut them down to
 do
 clean backups.
Here is where my inexperinece shows. We don't have
 TSM
on the mainframe so that isn't an option.
I'm lost as to how to backup this to somewhere w/o
shutting down linux daily and where to back it up
 to.
Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated.
 thanks
 Mace
