Motorola type modem help please

2000-07-17 Thread Rob Compton

I guess this is the wrong linux group, but you guys are probably just as
knowledgeable!

I have a Genius GM56-PCI modem in a linux machine. It's motorola chipset
based job, and I don't know what to use as a driver.

Any ideas what to use, or where to get it?

Simple reason why I don't run the Windoze box with Linux is that many apps I
have are Win95/98 and are not available for Linux (shame!). I could use
VMWARE etc... but that would make the machine even slower than it is now
(poor ol' 166MMX), sp I suffer the odd blue screen (shriek!)
from time to time.

I have asked AllAdvantage.com if they will do a viewbar for linux, but no
answer yet. Another reason why I still have MS (Malfunctioning Software) Win
on my machine

I tried the same thing with Definite Linux V7 (a RH-6 clone). And I got the
same result.

NFS is OK if your other machine is set up as a NFS server. My other machine
runs Win98 (yuk! blue screen!), and NFS server software is difficult to
find, and hard to justify paying upwards of $120 for, unless anyone knows of
a good NFS server for Win95/98. There are a few for NT.

In the end I found one that runs for 15 days as a trial, and used it to
install Slackware 7 which now works a treat.

Thanks for the advice Arno,

I downloaded them and installed them.

No change.
Same errors.

In fact, I tried Richard's way too, and got a segmentation fault when it
tried to guess what machine I was using, and went no further.

One thing that I also noted, with pkgtool, I get errors during install when
it claims to not be able to run chmod etc... because it doesn't have root
permission... though it runs the /install/install.sh script from what I can
make out as the utils and configs get installed, and the install directory
is removed afterwards.

I WILL get the hang of this Linux stuff one day!

ax25d with zipslack7

2000-06-27 Thread Rob Compton

I have just spent the last two days, installing, and re-installing zipslack
7 onto one of my machines to use as part of my BBS/node/cluster system.

I now find that ax25d won't load.

I get the following errors...

axconfig: port yam0 not active
axconfig: port scc0 not active
axconfig: port scc1 not active
axconfig: port axip not active
ax25d: no AX25 port data configured

For some reason, ax25d is looking in /usr/local/etc/ax25 for the config,
rather than in /etc/ax25
so I have put the config files in both places just in case - I don't know
the reason for this.

I also attach my axports file for reference.

The axip port is not important, and I can do away with it to get things
going if need be.

ifconfig reports all ports are there and active.

Anyone got any ideas? Have I got to recompile the tools/apps/libs etc..

Using Slackware 7, Zipslack kernel 2.2.13
ax25-tools-0.0.5
ax25-apps-0.0.4
libax25-0.0.7
node-0.3.0
on a Intel 486DX2/66 32Mb / 240Mb HD workstation.

I have also tried Mini-Linux, but the YAM won't work with that (kernel
2.2.15b) for some reason as the serial port won't release for yamdrv to take
control.

Two problems

2000-05-18 Thread Rob Compton

I've posted this message to both linux-hams and xfbb since the problems may
have been seen by readers of each list.

1. YAM - not working! The power LED is on, but the RX led shows no activity,
and it won't TX.
I have tried it using AGW to drive it under Windose98, and it works fine,
whether it be at 1200 or 9600bd.

The YAM is on ttyS3 at IRQ12, and appears to configure OK during my startup
script. But doesn't respond otherwise.

2. xfbb v7.01j daemon - won't work, exits with a segmentation violation
every time I try to connect to it with xfbbC, or if a user connects on a RF
port.

I have tried the rpm installation from the SUSE ftp site, because I couldn't
get the xfbb source to compile on my system for some reason.

The system is : Cyrix MII-233, 32Mb RAM, 2 x IDE HDD's, 1 x USCC, 1 x PC100,
4 serial ports,
Kernel is 2.2.13, Distro is Definite v7 (RedHat clone).

Any ideas anyone?

I'm going to try the YAM on another machine with no other apps running, and
on ttyS0 to see what it does.

I know the YAM should work, because so many people are using them.

As a member of the alladvantage program, I am stunned that the idiot broke
the rules that we agree to when we sign up.

It is true, that it's a way to earn while you surf, but spamming is a no-no!

Perhaps the idiot also didn't realise that there isn't a linux version of
the viewbar yet, so posting it to so many linux type mail reflectors would
serve no purpose what so ever, other than generating spam.

Aren't you being a bit perdantic Riley. But then again, from listening to
you via VHF repeaters in the UK, that wouldn't be you otherwise! ;-)

The guy means data radios. IE: Transceivers that have been designed
specifically for the transmission of digital data. As radio amateurs we have
a hands on ability to butcher wireless equipment to do virtually anything we
want, providing the basic design will allow us. Take a design that uses no
voice demod chip, ie: MC3356 instead of a MC3357 (or is it the other way
around).
One has af out, the other has raw data out. The pinouts are similar, but not
the same. Yes you could mod a rig based around the data chip to do voice,
easy on TX, lots of work, if not really worth it, for the RX.

In Europe Motorola used to market a box called the MC-Micro. A synthesized
rig that came in two basic variants - voice and data. The data version could
pass up to 16Kbit/sec with 12.5KHz filters fitted. It was/is a very good
basis for a 9K6 RUH compatible transceiver. A few of them have filtered out
of the commecial world into hands of radio hams, but not many. (I keep
looking!).

 > If you mean "radios that can be used for packet radio at 300 or

That's not data, that's damn near semaphore man!

And 9600baud is old-hat too.

I think that David wants plans for the type of radio that can be used for
38K4 and up. Your basic amateur, indeed commercial spec land mobile voice
radio needs a lot of IF work if you are going beyond 50KHz bandwidths. There
are many designs available, for 70, 23, and 13cm. If you find the homepage
of the Slovenian national radio society, you will find links to their data
experts. They have designs for complete systems that handle 1.222MBit/sec on
13cm, as well as designs for 70 & 23cm.

Then there's the Derbyshire IP Group's web page that details 70 & 23cm data
transceivers suitable for up to 128Kbit transmission.

Check out BayCom's homepage for more designs. Their latest parallel port
based modem works at up to 600Kbit/sec.

If you look closely, you will find many designs from all over the world.

Try these : http://lois.kud-fp.si/hamradio
and http://www.dutch.nl/bdj/index.htm

There. That's better.

Robin, have a word with Paul, G0MHD ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) as he understands
this better than me. It seems that in 2.0 kernels it was quite easy to route
packets beween subnets, ie: 44.131.162.x and 44.131.163.x using a wide
netmask to allow the passage of frames between systems. The routing in
Kernel 2.2 doesn't like to do it that way.
I'm not going to try to explain it, I'm still trying to understand it
properly myself!

Is it? Then how will APRS systems work that rely on relaying (errr...
digipeating) UI frames?
Or haven't you got that sort of technology where you are?

But then again, 99.9% of Radio Amateurs just LOVE things that are obsolete,

multiple tx frames

2000-03-02 Thread Rob Compton

Hello fellows.

My latest problem relates to one of my TNC based ports.

The TNC is a TNC220 in KISS mode, though I am sure that has absolutely
nothing to do with the problem, but I'm sure that someone will want that
info.

The problem is thus: it transmits the same frame, probably 8-10 times, in
one big transmission,
and because maxframe for that port is set at 3, I quite often see 24-30
frames of 250bytes in length being sent each time the wireless transmits.
And at 1200bd, that's taking a lot of time on a shared channel.

What could be causing it?

The TNC is hooked up to /dev/ttyS1, and I don't have anything else on that
irq (3).

The TNC is connected to the port via a fully connected RS232 lead - ie: a 25
core shielded cable with D-25's on both ends, passing full continuity
checks, no shorts, etc...

The other TNC based port on /dev/ttyS2 is working fine.

The system is thus:

Cyrix MX II PR233, 32Mb RAM. 64Mb swap memory, 4 serial ports (ttyS0-3)
using irq's 4,3,10 & 12. USCC at 300h, PC100 at 280h, distro is Definite
Linux v7 (a British distro based around RH6.1) with Kernel 2.2.13.
ax25-tools-0.0.5, ax24-utils-0.0.4, libax25-0.0.7, node-0.3.0, xfbbd,
jnos(g0mhd) 1.11d, clx501, KDE. Installed on 2 x HDD's, 1 x 520Mb, 1 x 1Gb,
plus occaisional incursions from a 100Mb Zip disk.

Any ideas anyone?

I have TNN, but I don't have any engish docs or text files for it.

Can anyone help?

Regarding the flexnet / and love of M*cr*s*ft products, it comes back to the
plug and play scenario where people love something that is dead easy to
install, and just as easy to configure and operate. Something that Linux and
it's associated apps fall down on.

Things are getting better, I recently picked up a copy of Definite Linux
v7.0 (a UK distribution, based around RedHat in the way Mandrake is), and
installed it on a AMDK6-200 based box in about 20-25mins. That's quicker
than MS-Windoze98 by about 20mins!! What is taking the time is getting
horrible apps like sendmail, and fetchmail working properly with multiple
email addresses on one machine. (Yes Dirk, I have exim, but can't get it to
compile at the moment for some reason).

KDE is helping things along with a nice gui for the users, something that
makes win9x users feel at home.

Has anyone tried running PCFlexNet under DOSEMU? Can that be done?

I found that there was a solder splash linking IRQ7 to IRQ5 on my USCC
board. I removed that, set the board to IRQ7 and it works. The PC100 still
doesn't work! I have further work to do.

The PET-SCC needs lots of delays compiling in. Look in the scc.c file (in
the with the sources) and change #undefine scc_delay to #define scc_delay
(or something like that!!) It's quite straight forward. I think these SCC's
don't like Pentium's!! they work fine in slow 486's and old 386's, but get
very grumblesome in fast PC's.

Check the docs for z8530drv

SCC Problem - continued

2000-01-04 Thread Rob Compton

Here we go again...

It get's more curious, though I can't help wondering if this is related

My 4m port is tied to ax0, my 432MHz port is tied to ax1

In my fbb port.sys, the 4m port is port 1, the 432MHz port is port 3.

xfbb reports that gb7bed is linked to ax1, though the 432 port is silent.
The 4m port is busy shifting data. xfbb's monitoring show that the frames
are being transmitted and received via port 3 (ax1 - 432MHz), though it is
port1 (ax0 - 4m) doing the work.

I am starting to wonder whether this is linked to my problem - the one where
the scc ports go into TX (until the timeout kicks in) and don't transmit any
data, nor RX any data.

So enclosed are the following files :

/proc/net/z8530drv - showing the lack of activity of my SCC ports
/etc/z8530drv.conf - to show a "correct" (so I think) config file
/etc/ax25/axports - my ports
/usr/local/fbb/system/port.sys - showing my xfbb setup.
/etc/rc.d/ax25.sh - my startup script for my ax25 stuff.
and finally the output of netstat - netstat.txt - to show that ax1 is
connected when it is really ax0

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this mysterious problem that is
keeping the users out of GB7ZPU.

Finally - what's the best DX-Cluster package for Linux - ie: easiest to
setup and run, best features, etc...

Best regards

Rob G1ZPU

PS: there is a typo in the ax25.sh where the YAM is described as being on
COM2, when it is actually on COM4 / ttyS3 (the config is correct).

My SCC saga

2000-01-04 Thread Rob Compton

Thanks to those that replied (all TWO of you - perhaps the rest are just
waking up after xmas!)

For those that don't know -

I'm having trouble getting my system to work properly - the SCC ports in
particular.

The system is as follows : Cyrix M11-233 - 32Mb RAM - 520Mb HD - 4 x tty
ports (on separate irq's) - a BayCom USCC four port card at 0x300h IRQ5 - a
PacComm PC100 two port card at 0x280h IRQ2(9) - a YAM on ttyS1, KISS TNC's
on ttyS2 and ttyS3.

Giving a grand total of: 4 x 9K6 ports, and 5 x 1200bd ports.

Kernel - 2.2.13
Latest axtools, utils & libax25.
dl1bke's version 3 driver (for 2.1.x and up kernels).

xfbb7, jnos1.11d

I had a close look at z8530drv.conf and checked it against the docs &
examples. Nothing looks wrong.

I re-compiled the scc module with the extra delays as per the documentation.

The symptoms are :

scc port goes into tx - until timeout - no data transmitted

sccstat reports that it's tx-error count matches it's tx count on all ports.

They all work fine under DOS, so there is something wrong with the timing
somewhere.

The motherboard is a PC-Chips TX-Pro-II with o/b sound & video. (sound
disabled in bios).

I get no errors, only the one from axip because it can't connect to the
other end of the link.

Then there is just one more oddity...

One of the kiss tnc's only seems to be transmitting EAX25 & DAMA frames, and
won't respond to normal ax25 connects.

Has ANYONE got any clues as to where to look next.

Regards

Rob G1ZPU
not @ GB7ZPU since it doesn't work except for it's 4m port

Problem with SCC

1999-12-26 Thread Rob Compton

Season's greetings to all list subscribers..

I learned a lot about linux in this last few months, but obviously not
enough.

I have missed something! for some reason fhe SCC's don't work properly.
I used the example info in the docs that came with the latest scc drivers
from dl1bke.

When the 1200baud SCC transmits, all that comes out seems to be a very long
tone, with a tiny 'bip' of something in the middle. I checked the settings
against the docs, and I can't see anything wrong. I guess the 9600baud ports
are doing the same thing too.

None of the scc's rx anything, even though there is valid data on the
channels.

The two scc cards are : BAYCOM USCC, and PacComm PC100. I use all the ports,
so that's a total of 6 scc devices.

My two kiss tnc's seem to be working ok, at least I got something right!

The SCC cards worked fine under DOS with BPQ.

I have already re-compiled the driver with the scc_delay's defined just in
case the bus speed is too fast for them. And they both have Zilog Z8530's
fitted.

Kernel is 2.2.13, latest ax25utils, ax25tools, and libax25.

Anyone got any ideas, or a few pointers of where to start looking for the
trouble?

JNOS & Linux

1999-12-20 Thread Rob Compton

In order to keep (a) continuity with my old dying DOS system, and, (b)
maintain all of the facilities offered by the UK-IP spec JNOS (not all
supported in Linux kernel), I am trying to run JNOS under linux.

So far I have got it to run in tty7, but it won't talk to my ports.

The question is this. Does JNOS share the ports with kernel? ie: when the
system boots up, I initialise all of my ports (scc's & tnc's), and then
issue ifconfig to set each one up, for example:
scc0 is 1200bd on 433.65
scc1 is 1200bd on 50.67
scc2 is 9600bd on 430/439MHz
etc...
The linux machine has the address 44.131.162.130
Jnos (gb7zpu.ampr.org) has the address 44.131.162.129

In JNOS, I issue the command:

attach asy scc0 0 ax25 scc0 256 256 1200

JNOS replies with "File or Directory does not exist"

Does this mean that I have to perfom a kissattach for each scc port? Even
though the DL1BKE driver presents each scc port as a kiss inteface?

If I go to a different console and enter ifconfig, it lists ALL of the ports
(all 6 scc ports, 2 tnc's, loopback, slip, etc..)

It comes back to my pet subject - the lack of documentation. It's all in the
AX25-Telepath-HOWTO.

All I really need are some sample config files :

An autoexec.nos for JNOS 1.11d giving attach & ifconfig commands for scc
type ports, or in fact, any ports that are also used by the kernel.

The docs111d.zip file available from many ftp sites only shows autoexecs
from people who have jnos talking to KISS TNC's which don't appear to be
configured via kernel ax25.

Yes I do have lnxforward, and that doesn't compile with libax25-0.0.7, yes I
do have mailgw, and NO it doesn't support all of the facilities that the
UK-IP compiled/modified version of JNOS1.11d has in itself, which is a
shame, because it looks a much tidier way of operating a mail gateway.

Seasoned Gratings.

lnzforward problem

1999-12-15 Thread Rob Compton

When I try to perform the "make" to create and install lnxconfig it fails
with a missing library file.
Something to do with converting callsigns. I made sure that I had
libax25.0.0.7 installed, and it
was.

Have I missed something.

The doc's just say "make sure you installed the libs" - which I had done.

I really will have to make proper notes before I make the journey home and
send mails!

Now I'm confused more.

In my YAM docs, it says nothing about kissattach to use the port for xfbb.

Don't you just love incomplete documentation.

Looks like I'll have to go all the way through my config and do some more
work!

Where is the AX25-Telepathic-HOWTO?

That's the one that tells you how to set things up that haven't been
documented properly.

I just love this, It's keeping my brain working at 110% and she cannae tek
much more Captain!

Rob.

I may have confused the issue when I carried on to another problem...

The YAM is now fine, that's sorted, a spot of hand/eye co-ordination
trouble!

The other problem relates to the serial ports that have KISS tnc's hanging
on the end of them.
kissattach fails with two errors, which I can't remember, and since the
machine that is giving me grief is 1.5 miles away, I can't get those errors
right now. I'll mail them to the list later, from my
works machine.

I know that it should pick up the speed info from the axports file, but for
some reason it is giving me an error (which I have no explaination for) that
looks like it's something to do with tty_rate or was that tty_speed, and was
it something like tty_ioctl or summat? My fault, I should have written it
down!

It's nearly there, just a little more time and the GB7ZPU server/bbs will be
flying under it's own steam with Linux in the boiler!

Strangely enough, after seeing the latest mailings on the list regarding SCC
troubles - I had no trouble making two SCC cards work together - one Baycom
USCC, the other a PacComm PC100.
6 ports of SCC bliss giving 3 x 1200bd and 3 x 9600bd ports. (PC100 has a
G4XYW modem connected to it's disconnect header and the USCC has a genuine
G3RUH modem on it's header).

Regards

Happy Kernel Compiling.

Thanks Yuri & Alberto,

Thanks to all involved, especially Richard Adams who is helping me get this
varmit of a system to work.

The problem was a hardware related issue. The Hardware was plugged into the
wrong tty! A spot of incorrectly labelled (or no labels to be precise!) tty
ports.
Thus, YAM was in ttyS1 when I thought it was in ttyS3, and when I swapped it
over, because I thought the port may not be working, I then thought it was
in S1 when it was actually in S3.

Now another problem has turned up, this one to do kissattach.

When I enter ;

# kissattatch /dev/ttyS1 4m 44.131.162.144

(4m is the name of the port in axports.)

I get a couple of errors, one relating to tty speed. Something is not right
as yet.
How do I set the tty port speed? I read the manual for setserial, and it
confused me more as there are a number of speed settings. Which one do I
want? if any?

If the manuals were better, and not written for a telepath, Linux would be
much
more popular than it already is.

The AX25-Howto needs re-writing (please Terry :o) ) so a complete idiot like
myself can read it, understand it, and what's more, configure their system
from it, without finding holes that are not documented, or if they are, you
need to be a mind-reader to know where the docs are.

Config help required..

1999-12-07 Thread Rob Compton

Hello,

I'm having trouble getting my final config sorted out.

The system is thus: RedHat 5.2, Kernel 2.2.13 with updated utils, glibc
etc... all as needed for 2.2.x kernels.

System config: Cyrix M11 233, 32Mb RAM, 520Mb HD, IDE CD, ZIP drive (ppa),
on a PC-Chips TX-Pro-II motherboard.

2 x SCC cards (one BAYCOM USCC, one PACCOMM PC100)

4 x serial ports (ttyS0 = mouse, ttyS1 = KISS TNC @ 4800baud, ttyS2 = KISS
TNC @ 9600baud, ttyS3 = YAM @ 9600baud)

Problem:

I can't get my YAM modem to initialise as it claims the serial port is busy,
and I can't seem to get kissattach to see the other serial ports properly.

I know that the ttyS00/S02 ttyS01/S03 interrupts are "shared" but even if I
remove two, it makes no difference. So the problem is elsewhere.

I don't know if it would work, but why not use modulate it using an AM
radio?
>From my limited knowledge of this subject, the problem of getting QAM to
work with FM radios is down to the amount of AF carrier phases & tones, plus
the modulation of those carriers which would probably get screwed up in the
FM modulation process, or even more if the radio really uses phase
modulation as many so called FM TX's do.

Not long ago I looked at the idea of hooking up a V34 modem to an AM ex-PMR
(land mobile) radio, with the idea of using that as a first stage in a 23cm
or 13cm setup. The PMR radio (A Phillips MX293) worked on VHF high band
(around 140MHz), and would then drive a transverter to the required band.

Since I don't get the time to "play" with these projects at the moment, I
don't mind sharing my ideas, in fact as a radio amateur, I don't mind
sharing them anyway!

It just came to me that we have been brainwashed into thinking that FSK
transmitters are the be-all and end-all of data transfer, but sometimes you
have to take a different view when a problem like this (QAM over a wireless
link) turns up.

Any thoughts?

Has anyone tried using modded (down to 10GHz) 11GHz Satellite TV RX & 10GHz
ATV TX for hooking up 10Mbit ethernet ports? - that's another one for you to
think about...
You need an ethernet adaptor with BNC o/p. The o/p levels will need to be
converted to 1v peak to peak (as per Composite Video). Feed this into your
ATV TX (with no pre-emphasis or filtering), and at the RX, pick up "baseband
video o/p" from the "SCART" connector. Convert that back to normal levels
(which I think are around the TTL area), and feed that back into your
ethernet adaptor. A T-piece is needed at each end, or you can spilt it at
your level converter.
Sounds simple. Should work. Anyone got the time to give it a go?

Back to reality

How does this 300bd modem work

Linux FBB problem

1999-11-22 Thread Rob Compton

Hi folks,

I posted this on the FBB mailing list as was stunned by the silence, so as I
know that many of you run FBB under Linux, someone could help..

I have (finally) compiled kernel 2.2.10 to include all of the drivers I
need, but what I can't seem to make work now is FBB.

I start the daemon with ./xfbb.sh -d &
Then I startx, and attempt to run xfbbX in a window.
It fires up, but I can't connect to the server because it says my
callsign/password is wrong.
I have checked and re-checked passwd.sys it looks OK.

What have I missed?
I have tried RTFM but for some reason xd700g_full.tgz has no docs with it!

Re: Kernel compile prob...

1999-09-15 Thread Rob Compton

Many thanks to all, I'm overwhelmed by the amount of help. Give me a few
years and I'll be able to work out how to list a directory!!

I'll try a 'make bzImage' (instead of make zImage), and then look seriously
at using modules as there is still a fair bit more I need to get this thing
working properly.

Kernel compile prob...

1999-09-15 Thread Rob Compton

I have admitted many times before - I am a linux dummy!

My problem now is that for some reason I can't get kernel to complete it's
compile.

I've got everything I want in the kernel except the drivers for my 100Mb Zip
disk, so I added that to the config.

When it compiles, I get the following errors:

snip

tools/build bootsect setup compressed / vmlinux.out CURRENT > zImage
Root device is (3,6)
Boot sector 512bytes
Setup is 4392bytes
System is 552kB
System is too big
make[1]: ***[zImage] Error 1
make[1]: leaving directory '/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/linux/arch/i386/boot'
make: ***[zImage] Error 2

snip...

What does this mean? How can I sort it?

Thanks to all those that replied, Gerd, Steve, and Richard.

I'm going to do both things - output to tty10, and check to make sure that
the directory structure in init.srv matches reality.

I couldn't see any description of error codes in the docs. How about it

And I have also subscribed to the FBB mailing list.

Missing z8530.c in RH 5.2 Source?

1999-08-17 Thread Rob Compton

I have had a few minutes (hours) spare and taken another look at my Linux
system.

I've totally re-installed RH5.2 with a clean HD, complete with the kernel
(2.0.36-0.7) source code.

I went through the kernel config, and duly selected the z8530 driver ready
for my Baycom USCC, and my ancient PacComm PC120 card. It seemed to compile
OK, then threw up an error. What? z8530.c missing? nope! not there! Checked
the source directory for drivers, and it ain't there. z8530.h is there, but
no .c!

Has anyone got it? can they send it to me as a message attachment.

It was all going so well, then.

I have various versions of z8530 utils, but none of them have ever compiled
with my system. There has always been some sort of problem.

Despondant...

Rob.

YAM & z8530drv-2.4 probs

1999-07-29 Thread Rob Compton

Yes, I am still having a complete nightmare getting to grips with this Linux
stuff.

Am I giving up? No!

Right, to business...

1. I have the YAM disk here in my hand... I install it as instructed in the
README files. Does it work - NO!

When I perform the patch, it fails when it goes to update Config.in - so me
being a clever person, I use emacs and edit Config.in to put in the line
that the patch failed to add. Did that work - NO!

Why? What have I missed?

2. I have z8530drv-2.4 (two versions, dl1bke's version (b), and g8ecj's
updated version(c)) - and I install it into the source directory as
requested, I type make for_kernel, and it goes off and does it's bit. So I
then try to make a new kernel with the z8530 drivers, and YAM, and guess
what - it fails to compile with an Error 1 in scc.o or something like that.
If I de-select the z8530 and the YAM drivers, it compiles OK.

Why? What have I missed?

Kernel is 2.0.36 / RH5.2

Trying to make a module with the z8530 drivers using 'make module' also
fails with the same errors.

Can I get 'make' to output it's text info into a file so I can see what it's
done, or where the problems started? I know I can make it report which
directory it's in, but its off the screen so fast, I can't write it down in
time!

Rob

Getting confused!

1999-07-21 Thread Rob Compton

Hi guys, I have just had a chance to sit down and take another look at this
linux system I am building to take over the running of the GB7ZPU bbs.

I now see that, from reading the messages on this list, I have the wrong
ax25-utils for the 2.0.36 kernel that I have - the one I've got is
ax25_utils-2.1.42a-3.i386.rpm, and I see that I should have an earlier
version.

My dilemma is: I have 2.2.10 kernel source on my win98 machine's hard disk,
all 14Mb of it. The linux box is running RH5.2. As a bit of a newbie at
linux, can I compile the 2.2.10 kernel with RH5.2, or will I need to get the
RH6 stuff to go with it? If I CAN compile 2.2.10 with RH5.2, can I use the
ax25 utils that I have "in stock", or will I need yet another version?

And though off topic, but related to my woes, can I hook up a ZIP drive to
Linux? I have looked through the configuration when compiling kernel, but
can't find ZIP in there anywhere. If I can get the ZIP hooked up to the
Linux box, then I can transfer the new kernel source easily, in a zip ;-)

I still think that the docs for Linux need to be written so a dummy can
understand them. The docs I have found (HOWTO's etc) all seem to be aimed at
university professors who now linux so well that they don't need the doc's
anyway!

Best regards

Rob G1ZPU

Re: In Layman's terms: what exactly is a LOOPBACK ?

1999-07-06 Thread Rob Compton

The Loopback port was put there to enable programs like FBB to talk to other
progs like TNOS, as if they were talking to them via a TNC & Wireless. Older
versions of node software would only allow applications talks to the outside
world, and not "loop back" into another application.
For example : my bbs : GB7ZPU runs an archaic setup using DOS5, Desqview
386, BPQ4.08a, FBB 5.15c, UKNOS 1.10i, and up until recently, a specially
cut-down JNOS 1.10i as a standalone Convers server. The whole system acts as
a AX25 mail gateway to IP, together with NNTP gateway, FTP server, etc. In
the UK, ax25 and ip nets are (should be) on separate channels, so they don't
interfere with each other, or should I say, that ax25 doesn't interfere with
ip's more friendly protocols!

The loopback idea was carried onwards by the authors as it is useful in many
applications, even under Linux (LinFBB/Xfbb).

As software is moving onwards, the need for the Loopback is becoming less
(except for sad old DOS software!), and even in the world of Gatesville99,
authors are moving to a more socket orientated way of talking to the outside
world with packet radio. SV2AGW's latest packet engine uses WinSock / ip
interfaces for applications, and is damned easy to setup and run. It's a
pity that some of the Linux amateur wireless apps are not this simple, or
more hams would move over to what is a superior operating system. Just that
it's user interface is crap compared to 95/98/NT in terms of adding
programs/utilities/hardware support etc..

I shall stop digging, and carry on with working out how to get this latest
kernel on my machine (and working!).

Re: Linux AX.25 programing help

1999-06-30 Thread Rob Compton

Here we go again!

Some dipstick (me) didn't actually install the sources when I installed
RH5.2 to the hard disk. Thankfully you guys are out there to keep my wheels
on the road and pointing in the right direction.

I have just compiled a kernel and I'm going to see how things go. I think I
have to find a few more modules - for the YAM and similar, but so far it
looks good. (I have the YAM module on a floppy right here!).

Special thanks to Tomi, Gerd, and Torsten, who put me right really quick!

I have the HOWTO, I have read it, I understand what it's saying, BUT! For
some reason I can't 'make' the new kernel. When I enter "make menuconfig",
as per the instructions, it comes back with "*** No rule to make target
'menuconfig'. Stop."
I have read, and re-read the RedHat 5.2 book, I have racked up loads of time
on the 'net looking at FAQ's, and more, but I can't find "config",
"menuconfig" or even "Xconfig" on my machine.

I want to learn about Linux, but it seems that all the people who know don't
talk the same language as me. Yes, they may speak English, but it sounds
like double-dutch to me ;-) There are few local amateurs that operate Linux,
they say "yeah, it's simple, just look at the how-to's and faq's. Great,
they tell you all about it, providing it goes right first time. If it goes
belly up when you hit the enter key, there is nothing anywhere that tells
you what to do next. Like I pointed out originally, with win95/NT programs,
you install them with a nice simple setup program that you supply with some
information, it probes the system registry for other stuff, and off it goes.

The FBB is for the AX5 users that run WinPac, TPK, and other similar
FBB-UI-header mail programs. It is the standard package for mail forwarding
in the UK and I know it, it works, and does a very good job (thank's
Jean-Paul!), The TNOS is there because it's another complete package
offering all of the servers that the ip users want in one simple to operate
& configure package.

The PC120 card is the same as a PC100 card ( I don't know what the
difference is), and uses the Z8530 interface like the BAYCOM USCC.

I have the information on setting that up now, but if I could just make a
start with "make menuconfig" etc.. I'd be off!!!

Re: Linux AX.25 programing help

1999-06-29 Thread Rob Compton

Like Scott, kb2ear, I am new to Linux and find the setup of a system
compared to a Win95 or MS-DOS system bewildering.

It took me two weeks to get Linux installed and working on my system - much
of that because RH5.2's install prog didn't like the old 2x CDROM. But
that's sorted now.

What I think is really needed is some sort of prog for X where you enter the
ports you want to use, serial i/o for KISS, serial i/o for YAM modem,
parallel for PICPAR, pc-card solutions like PC100/120, DRSI, BAYCOM, etc..
and that then compiles the config files which get's the whole shooting match
up and running, without the need for a masters degree in C++, and 25 years
of UNIX experience to make it tick.

If Linux is to win the war with NT, then it must be as easy to set up. I
know there are books on the subject, but at the end of the day, Joe Public
isn't interested in them, he want's a system that's easy to configure and
reliable when it's running.

I've gone to Linux because my old DOS based packet BBS (GB7ZPU) is coming to
the end of it's life (Dec31st!), and I have looked at all of the
alternatives. None of them offer the selection of available modems supported
with the features it needs to provide the same / better service for the
future, as Linux does.

So here's my cry for help!

My system will comprise of :

Cyrix MX233 processor in a PC-Chips TX-ProII m/b with on-board svga & sound.
32Mb ram, 520Mb HD, 4 serial, 1 parallel, mouse on sio3.

The packet interfaces will be:

sio1 - KISS TNC 1200bd
sio2 - KISS TNC 1200bd
sio4 - YAM 9600bd
PC120 port A - 9600bd
PC120 port B - 1200bd
BAYCOM USCC port A - 1200bd
BAYCOM USCC port B - 1200bd
BAYCOM USCC port C - 19200bd
BAYCOM USCC port D - 9600bd

BBS Software - F6FBB v7g for Linux running the daemon version
IP Hub software - TNOS
Node/Rose software : FPAC

I need some pointers as to setting up the PC120 / Baycom ports as the kiss
stuff seems relatively simple-ish.

Thanks in advance for any help.
