flash killer extension for firefox 4

2011-03-28 Thread sara fink
I just installed firefox 4 only to find out that flash killer isn't
compatible with this version. Someone knows other extension that will do the
job?

It would be pity to downgrade only for this.

Not exactly the same, but Flashblock will block all flashes, and
display them only when clicked upon (whitelists for youtube for
example, supported...)

You might also use a (non-tested-yet) version of R.I.P, which is
compatible with 4 :
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/remove-it-permanently/versions/?page=1#version-1.0.6.10
- works for any kind of element, not just flash (i.e. you can ban
*doubleclick.net* for example, and not see GIF ads from there, etc)

product review? Fujicom external HDD

2011-03-28 Thread Justin
looking to by an external eSATA drive. This is the only one that seems
reasonably priced in Israel.

http://www.getit.co.il/Prod/62962

Problem is I can't find any reviews on it (hebrew or english), or if it
works with Linux.

Has anyone else had experience with it?

First, you've missed a slash there. it's http://www.getit.co.il/Prod/62962/

Second, you can't tell if it's reasonably price since it's an auction.
Youre' not going to get it for 389 NIS + 39 NIS shipping.

zap prices starts at 484 NIS.

You won't find reviews for it because Fujicom is Yanir's private label, so
iyt's probably sold under some other OEM name abroad.
Here is probably the source:
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/296911767/XD_258eSU_2_5_eSATA_portable.html
Also note that unlike the local Fujicom offering, this chinese item is an
*enclosure*, not a complete product. You need to add the HD yourself.

If you wonder how I found it:
I've searched for
2.5" 1TB esata -fujicom
under google images until I saw a picture that looked identical.
I had to explicitly ignore "fujicom" entries because all the local Israeli
search hits appeared first in the search results.

Personally, since this is probably a generic enclosure with a standard drive
slapped in, I don't expect any troubles, like those fancy WD modes where the
drive is identified as both a CD drive and a HD with hidden partitions and
the like.

I'm using FacePAD to backup my pictures from facebook with Firefox. I
decided not to upgrade to Firefox 4 because I don't know if FacePAD
will work. Actually I don't need to upgrade Firefox at all, but
Firefox upgraded itself to 3.6.16 without my permission. I guess most
of plugins will not be compatible with Firefox 4.

Firefox does not upgrade without your permission.
Check under "Tools/Options/Advanced/Update", and set

"Ask me what I want to do"

instead of

"Automatically download and install the update".

That is not true here.

There is no item resembling "Options" under Firefox>Tools here.

The current habit is indeed to rush any new version to release, whether
or not the necessary supplement (plugins, addons) are available for it.

When I installed openSuSE v11.4, Firefox 4 (a release candidate!!!) came
with it without any offer of a atable alternative. I do not know what
kind of mind would inflict a release candidate when a stable 3.6.16 was
available. For what it's worth, I do not like FF4. It is loaded with
changes made for the sake of making changes, which seems to be a disease
od wpidemic proportions among Linux (at least) developers in general.

Thank you. I changed the settings of my Firefox. But if set to
"Automatically download and install the update" (which is probably the
default), then Firefox does upgrade without your permission.

By the way, I'm using Google Chrome as my main browser, and Google
Chrome also upgrades without your permission. I don't know if it's
possible to prevent Google Chrome from upgrading without your
permission.

I stand corrected.
What I wrote below was for Windows Firefox.
Under Linux you will find the same under "Edit/preferences/Advanced/Update".

That is true for add-ons. It is not true for Firefox upgrades.

In Linux versions of Firefox, there is no "Tools/Options"; it is a
Windows convention. The equivalent for Linux is:
Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Update. What is displayed in the Update pane
is:

"Automatically check for updates to
Addons
Search engines"

which isn't quite the same thing. There is certainly nothing about
upgrades to the browser being voluntary.

But it's nice to know about Windows browsers too.

OT: Einstein Writer under QEMU

2011-03-28 Thread geoffrey mendelson
I'm trying to help someone run Einstein Writer under QEMU. I set up a
virtual machine and installed FreeDos on it.

I found a demo of Einstein which is supposed to be a running version
of it.

When I start it up, I get a few English words and a lot of junk on the
screen. I assume I am missing installing Hebrew support in the virtual
video card.

I did a web search and found a wikipedia entry for codepage 862. I
tried to load it with the FreeDos command display con=(ega,862,1). It
loads, but I still get garbage.

Any ideas?

Alternatively is there a way to convert EinsteinWriter files to
something useable without Einstein itself?

Thanks, Geoff.
