Looking back at an old email I sent to this list, around 5 years ago, I was commenting about a device for connecting a POTS phone to a USB port. Someone commented that it was a waste of money because you could buy SIP phones for under 300 NIS and posted a link. That link is long dead. The cheapest I could find were listed on Zap for 600 NIS. I was wondering if anyone knows of a source of SIP phones in Israel, preferably cheap. While expensive, fancy phones would be nice for business, cheaper ones, for home or small office use would be more of what I want. DECT or WiFi phones, would be good too. What does Orange give it's VoIP customers? Is that a SIP phone, or is just a DECT phone connected to their SIP router (OBOX)? BTW, if anyone has an old or used SIP or CISCO phones they would like to find a home for, I would appreicate them, and possibly can pay a little money for them. As a start check the MTU on your ppp connection. If it's too high, you will get lots of what looks like lost packets. This all started when I tried installing yellowtab zeta, (what a waste) And my lin just never worked right after that. I had my cable modem and some wires changed. ping got me 60% 62% and 50% packet loss. The cable company had me disconnect the eth cable from the modem and things went temporarily back to normal. Re: booting lin from usb drive
Well I didn't find a lin4win, but I stumbled across colinux. http://www.colinux.org/?section=home Which lets you run win and lin concurrently which sounds like what I wanted. I will still need to see how intrusive it is. I want the ability to run lin on occasion at work, but I don't want to get anyone upset with me. I will first try the usb route and if it is a no go move on from there. qa question
HI all, We are trying to set up qa for Denemo (denemo.sourceforge.net) We need to test the code, but I think we have that covered. testing program use: we have programs to automate mousemenu use. Denemo is however very keyboard centric. What we are looking for is a way to take keybindings and have them perform the actions and then check the results. I thought of key stroke recording, but google gave me a bunch of hardware devices. What would be the nicest is to take the denemo keybinding file and somehow use it to initiate the keystrokes. Is this possible? Is there a testing suite/enviroment that will permit all types of testing, including the keystrokes, which is FOSS? denemo script help
Hi all, I write documentation for denemo (denemo.sourceforge.net). Denemo is very keyboard centric with many keybindings and the ability to customize the keybindings very easily. I was creating docbook charts of the keybindings by hand, but with the new increased development pace the keybindings change often. I have an example of keybinding charts and a handcoded docbook file. Is there some kind perl or pythoner out there who could offer a script which will help spit out docbook charts from the keybinding charts? what is needed is to convert the file to a docbook table and add the header and footer stuff, then translate the numbers in the keybinding file into human readable names Ctrl, Alt, Shift etc. One problem is that not all functions have bindings and some functions have more than one binding. hebrew in regular kunbuntu

My question is whether I should try this with kubuntu or attempt to do things manually? if manually could someone remind me where the xorg file I need to change is located and what I must add? with the debian hebrew config file I was for the first time ever able to read hebrew in the console rtl and mutt just worked for me with hebrew. outofthis mess soundadvice
Hi all, I have had this happen to me now three times. I have been using Demudi. When I last installed Demudi it cames with a sources list that showed debian testing. But actually after installing many apps I needed they wrote a letter saying not to use testing. Now again I have a system that works perfectily. I have mutt working finally, I have my win4lin setup and my wine setup java, my scanner/printer etc. but I can't install applications without dependency hell. You know what I mean i want to install development stuff but end up with that giant list of items to remove which includes my entire system. Or just a deadend where my base packages interfere with installation. That said, What I want to do is do a backup whereby: All my settings will be preserved. the more esoteric apps will be ready for me when I start (mutt-ng)/win4lin kernel and apps I will have a clean system based on only one release of debian. I would actually like to have the demudi stuff as well. other I have usb flash memory cards 1gig and 128mg. I am not sure if this is enough room to do the backup I need? What should I use to backup with and how do I ensure that the files remain uncorrupted? The other option is a dist upgrade, which I have to date never been successful with. Any advice before I dive off the deep end into an empty swimming pool (taskpool?) would be most appreciated. making a function for a series of files

Aaron wrote: cd command not found?? cd is an internal shell command (doesn't make sense to run it in a separate process). Are you sure that's what happened? seperate process? I think what Amos means is that for cd it's a different matter than e.g. for ls. When you type ls, bash searches for the command on your path, and if found runs it in a subprocess. If your path, or the disk containing the executable (normally /bin/ls) is broken, you get the message you got below. However since cd is an internal command, bash should run it directly (there is no 'cd' executable, it's the bash executable that does the job), so we'd be very surprised if you see similiar message for the 'cd' command too. Were you just giving an example or did you actually see a '-bash: cd: command not found'? I can hardly imagine how this could happen - unless the bash executable itself is broken. What's the exact error message? It should be something like -bash: exact commandname: command not found -bash: ls:command not found OK, so we know it's bash, and we know it knows you typed ls (unless there are some mysterious unprintables hidden over there), rules out a few exotic possibilities. What about if you try explicit path: /bin/ls ? Can you access /bin at all? I would have said try ls'ing it, but since you don't have ls... what happens if you type /bitab? does it complete? if yes, try another tab to see what's there... If there is a working /bin/ls, then it's your PATH. Were the echo $PATH results you mentioned before done from a working terminal? If yes, try from a non-working one (echo, like cd, is an internal command - if it does not work, either you have a bad alias or your bash executable is bad). If you see no /bin or no /bin/ls, indeed the most probable cause would be a bad disk/ bad file-system. When this happens, try switching to another (working) shell, and see if you can access /bin/ls from there. If you can run /bin/df, try /bin/df / and /bin/df /bin. It might also be related to user permissions (maybe these shells are opened under some special user, that does not have read or exec perms to the file) - try running /usr/bin/id ... oops - this would probably not be available too - so try locating this shell by carefully examining the output of ps -ef from another terminal - note the user id. One more general diagnosis tool - if you do locate the shell's process from another terminal, you can use 'strace -p process number', then go back to the bad term and type /bin/ls -ld /bin/ls to see the syscalls bash does when looking for ls. Yet another possibility, is that for some reason the shell or the terminal is run chroot(8)'ed to some other place - I guess this one is too far fetched for now was from ctrl alt F2 but the same thing on term windows I us konsole if it matters This would have helped to further diagnose had you given a different answer to my other question (the exact error message). As it stands it probably does not matter. It happens randomly and often after time when I open a new term. Aaron after time - does that mean that it works ok for a while, then the same shell stops recognizing commands? yes it means it was working and pitom all of a sudden it stopped. Or do you simply mean that you open a new shell after some time, and the *new* shell is the one that does not work? Or - is it that they both stop working, but this does not happen unless you open a new terminal. One more useful technique you can try, especially if you suspect PATH is being corruped, is adding debug printings in initialization scripts - e.g. /etc/profile /etc/bash.bashrc, ~/.bash_profile and ~/.bashrc (sometimes it's the initializations scripts that fail, corrupting your PATH on the way). But do make sure you remember to remove them once your'e done experimenting... only root finds my scanner
Hi all, I have a epson cx3200. I am running debian testing and the scanner is recognized by root. for the benefit of other usb printer users here is what I did: The device files used by libusb are located in /proc/bus/usb/ (e.g. /proc/bus/usb/001/003). The exact file name can be found out by running sane-find-scanner which would print libusb:001:003 in this case. While setting permissions with e.g. chmod a +rw /proc/bus/usb/001/003 seems to work, this change is not permanent. The permissions will be reset when the scanner is replugged or Linux is rebooted. One solution to set permissions on-the-fly are the Linux hot-plug tools that should come with any current distribution. SANE itsself comes with a hotplug script and related documentation in the tools/hotplug/ directory. Please refer to the README in that directory for the details. Re: Why most people prefer Windows
even if the formatting is d. The document I receive is only one part. The bigger part is the document I need to send back to the client. Will it look the same on the client's machine? The answer from a technical writer is no, not with MS office, not with OO, not with anything other than pdf. I had a client that no matter what I did if I sent an office 2000 document to them it never looked right. (we were both using office 2000) That is why pdf is the only or one of the only sure ways of making sure that what you did will look right on someone elses computer. Re: Why most people prefer Windows
Well, I worked as a tecwriter, and there were two shows MS Word and FrameMaker, The first is not really a techwriting tool but is used as such, and it is buggy, and I mean buggy. The second is a real tool, but a pain to learn and a pain to use. I personally hate word processors and avoid them if at all possible they are all bloatware. That said I use Oo when I need to open and save MS word docs. For profesional use I use DocBook, from docbook I can make html, pdf, rtf svg to name a few output formats. I don't tell clients what I use I just ask them what format they want the results in. For the final version I send a pdf, so they shouldn't mess up my hard work. docbook is a standard, a language MS Word and and Oo are applications bound to a file format. What do you do with a MS word document that is corrupted? Cry. With xml (including Oo) just open the file in a text editor and laugh. If you are using tables to format with or aligning text with spaces, then you are inviting trouble. Hi all, my subject unfortuentely says it all. I am using debian and with a mixed bag of sources. I upgraded my system to stable (which was previously sarge and stable was woody) but didn't change my sources.list. I hadn't however changed any system files and only removed a few apps. Re: debian font foibles
thanks Aaron Maybe run 'fc-cache' ? that did it. :) Alternatively, copy the fonts to a directory under /usr/share/fopnts and run 'fc-cache' as root . This is for a program that uses fontconfig (most X programs nowadays do). I googled for libfreetype and svg and defoma and svg and got nowhere. defoma is a complicated wrapper Debian has around the multiple fonts systems. Unlike fontconfig it doesn't just work. Hi all, The recent versions of lilypond music notation use pango as a backend. songs with hebrew lyrics work pretty much out of the box now. But text blocks under the music display the hebrew words left to right order but the letters of each word are in the correct hebrew order. I need this to work for a book I am writing. One problem is that the developer of lilypond is not a hebrew speaker and is working blindly. The other is that I have no idea about pango. I had cable technicians to my place at least 3 times, messing around with the signals strength of the Rx and Tx until they got to something which is similar to a stabler connection. 2. The PPP configuration I had was too sensitive. I had to change the LCP configuration to do more LCP requests before declaring the connection as dead (I think 5 lost packets in sequence) and to enlarge the time interval between every LCP packet (to 30 sec. if i recall correctly). Hmn, so much hebrew in the thread but if I understand correctly the idea is to produce an eletronic version of a daf in its normal visual layout. I didn't read the whole thread but if it involves xml/css/xsl-fo I would be interested. There is a gemara my boys used that colors the various parts of a sugia as well, which would be interesting. I actually am less interested in just the plain texts as in programs to drill, test and teach these texts. The reason is that the texts are available albeit not in correctly formatted hebrew/aramaic. But all the development of torah learning/games etc. seems only to be in windows. I haven't checked out the current status of xml and hebrew but this seems to me to be a way I would go. to create a gemara schema and a script to tag the text and then use either css or xsl to format it Aaron On Mon, Aug 01, 2005 at 11:15:54AM +0200 or thereabouts, Moshe Wagner wrote: Although not exactly your plan, since I thought of the gmara as a start, I was planning to do something with Tzurat hadaf (see my thread about it here: http://whatsup.org.il/forum/21609) If anyone can give me a hand on it, it might actually get somewhere (for on my own I am not accomplishing much). Re: chumash for lin?
Nice but hebrew is my second language so for me to be involved the language of communication should be english. I have a friend who programs torah stuff for windows I will ask him if he is interested in working on some lin projects, although he thinks about $ so I am not sure. The project isn't supposed to be used for different displays of the daf such as coloring, it is only for displaying the daf, it, but it will probably be easy to add stuff later if someone wants. I agree too that Linux doesn't have enough development in this area, and I would like to change that of course. in search of the perfect editor
Hi all, I do many different tasks within an editor: docbook, html etc I use nedit mode of emacs boy I wish that hebrew was better supported.. I do a lot of work with lilypond and would use emacs but the hebrew support is not as good a gvim. I tried jedit which has great support for lilypond but can't type in hebrew, literally it just won't time if I choose hebrew keyboard. I had to fiddle with gvim until I got hebrew working. gedit worked beatiful with hebrew out-of the box but after using emacs/vim it is just lame/ the keybindings open dialog boxes and there is no scheme for navigation advanced editing etc. not to mention a dirth of plugins... So is there an editor which is of the class of vim emacs with native hebrew support and ease of creating plugins for syntax highlighting autocompletion, the ability to call lilypond from within and launce viewers for the outputted ps pdf dvi and midi files? I wasted half a day trying to write a plugin for gedit for lilypond before I found out that as an editor it is just lame. I think I know the answer probably is gvim but I would like to know if there are options I haven't tried yet.
