It is a shame the support that real.com gives to Linux. Nice way to
payback to the work horse of their servers. They do take full advantage
of the hard work of linux developers.

What I usually do is mount the image then burn to cd. Works everytime.

3.2. Where Can I Get the HOWTO's and Other Documentation?

Look in the following places, and the sites that mirror them.

  * http://www.linuxdoc.org/
  * ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/OS/Linux/doc/HOWTO/
  * ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/docs/HOWTO/
  * ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/

For a list of Linux FTP sites, refer to the answer for: "Where Can I
Get Linux Material by FTP?"

If you don't have access to FTP, try the FTP-by-mail servers:
[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], or:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

A complete list of HOWTO's is available in the file HOWTO-INDEX at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html. The
mini-HOWTO's are indexed at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/mini.html.

In addition, translations are available from
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/translations/ and mirrors
worldwide. The HOWTO's and other documentation have been translated
into the following languages:

Chinese (Big5) (zh) Croatian (hr)French (fr)
German (deHellenic (el)Indonesian (id)
Italian (it) Japanese (ja)Korean (ko)
Polish (pl) Slovenian (sl) Spanish (es)
Swedish (sv) Turkish (tr)

Additional documents are always in preparation. Please get in touch
with the coordinators if you are interested in writing one. Contact
and submission information is at
http://www.linuxdoc.org/mailinfo.html.

There is also a LDP HOWTO page at http://howto.tucows.org/.

The Guide Series produced by the Linux Documentation Project is
available from http://www.linuxdoc.org/. Please read them if you are
new to Unix and Linux.

The Linux Mobile Guide is an expanded version of the
Linux-Laptop-HOWTO. The URL is: http://home.snafu.de/wehe/howtos.html.

And, of course, a number of people have written documentation
independently of the LDP:

To find out about Linux memory management, including performance
tuning, see Rik van Riel's Web page at
http://humbolt.geo.uu.nl/Linux-MM/.

The Linux Consultants HOWTO has a directory of Linux consultants at
http://www.linuxports.com/.

Gary's Encyclopedia lists over 4,000 Linux related links. Its URL is
http://members.aa.net/~swear/pedia/index.html.

There is also a FAQ specifically for the Red Hat Linux distribution,
at http://www.best.com/~aturner/RedHat-FAQ/faq_index.html.

And the Home Page of this FAQ is http://www.mainmatter.com/.

3.3. Where Should I Look on the World Wide Web for Linux Stuff?

In addition to the Linux Documentation Project Home Page:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/, there are many pages that provide beginning
and advanced information about Linux.

These two pages provide a good starting point for general Linux
information: Linux International's Home Page, at http://www.li.org/,
and the Linux Online's Linux Home Page at http://www.linux.org/.

Both of these pages provide links to other sites, information about
general information, distributions, new software, documentation, and
news.

Documentation for kernel developers is on-line:
http://kernelbook.sourceforge.net/.

The tutorial, Unix is a Four Letter Word..., is located at
http://www.linuxbox.com/~taylor/4ltrwrd/. It is a general introduction
to Unix operating systems and is not Linux specific.

Additionally, here is a certainly incomplete list of Web pages devoted
to Linux:

If you mean the programs that automaticly loads after you've either
logged in from X or just started X from command prompt ?
Just set the "save desktop settings" option when you logout.
The warning if you've logged in as root won't go away.

Tons of newsreaders. slrn, tin, emacs on the command line, xnews,
knews, and PAN (the Pimp-Ass Newsreader, at http://superpimp.org/ ) on
the GUI side. Your distro should have at least 3 of those things
already available.

IMHO, Netscape's news client is horrible, not only in its interface, but
because to use it, you need Netscape running, sucking up memory and
crashing randomly. slrn is really full-featured, small, and never
crashes.

ncurses-4 and 5 have many programs in common, so I can't install both

complain. It seems that one must force ncurses-5. My question is, has anybody

Thank you for replying.
I was looking for something like the BSD program "calendar" which looks
for the file ~/calendar. In that file are dates and comments. So if my
~/calendar file has "1/1 Happy New Year" in it calendar would show that
message on the first of the year. I'm afraid I've become hooked on it
for keeping track of birthdays, etc. I know about the X based ones but I
was hoping for something text based.

I did a little bit of an overkill on this post, but I saved it so I can post
it to other Newbies wanting to know this info. If you just want to read
about Linux/FreeBSD skim the last few paragraphs but a quick history might
help you understand everything a little bit better.

Here is a bit of quick history of UNIX/Operating Systems

It started back in about 1969 when the huge company AT&T (Bell Labs) wanted
to make an Operating System. Remember, UNIX is really the first OS, not
Windows or Mac. From this point there were really two types of UNIX OS's,
AT&T's System and Berkeley BSD which was developed by the University of
California at Berkeley (UCB). So basically any UNIX system made today
(including FreeBSD and Linux) are based on one of these two systems.

Since the beginning of UNIX both these two variations were being added to
all the time making them better, faster, easier to use, and offering more
programs/utilities/commands. UCB stopped adding to their BSD project in 1994
with the final release of 4.4 BSD. In 1993 Bell Labs sold thier UNIX
division (UNIX System Laboratories) to Novell and in 1995 Novell sold it to
Santa Cruz Operation and Hewlett Packard. The latest version of this UNIX is
called System V (five)

In the 70's and 80's when both BSD and AT&T's System were being developed,
computer makers would sell computers based on one of these two UNIX types.
They would make their own version of UNIX based on one of these two types
(maybe taking pieces from both) and the result would be their own UNIX OS.
These computer systems (usually a network of computers) were very expensive,
and would be sold to universities or businesses usually. At the time OS's
were sold as part of the computer because the PC (and PC clones) and Windows
weren't established. So an operating system was really part of the computer
like it is today with Apple (MacOS) and IBM (OS/2). Here are some of the
popular UNIX versions and the companies who made them:
AIX - IBM
SunOS and Solaris - Sun Microsystems
Ultirix - Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC)
HP-UX - Hewlett Packard

Besides these big companies other people were also trying to make a computer
which was easy to use (and to make money) by making their own operating
system. Apple was really the first to make an OS with a GUI which was easy
to use. And Bill Gates of course came up with Windows which is a pretty
popular OS :) For a little bit of Windows history, IBM, who was a computer
giant, was going to buy Microsoft and Windows to be their OS. But the
business savvy Bill Gates refused to sell the OS, only letting IBM put it on
their computer, allowing Gates to have the Windows OS put on any type of
computer because he owned the rites for it. IBM then decided to make OS/2
and meanwhile Gates becomes the richest man in the world and the computer
giant IBM has gone downhill along with Apple.

Another small UNIX OS called Minix was being developed at a university or
somewhere. It was cheaper than those other UNIX versions and was used at
Universities a lot. Then Linus Torvalds decided he wanted to make a UNIX
(Minix) of his own that would be even better. He started coding along with
other people all over the world and decided to name his OS Linux, obviously
as a combination of Minix and his first name. As you probably know it is
open source (since it is licenesed uner the GNU General Public License)
which means anyone can see the code. So computer people would install Linux,
look at the code, and make improvements to it. If it was an improvement that
Linus wanted the OS to have he would make it part of the OS.

Also, since Linux is licensed under GNU General Public License many Linux
variations or distributions have been made. They all use the Linux kernel
(the main part of the OS that controls programs, memory etc) and have tried
to add other things that make the OS easier to use. Basically they are
adding GUI stuff and other programs/commands to make Linux as easy to use as
Windows while making a little money for themself. I should also mention X.
It is the software that virtually

After installing RH 6.0 and the defaults for Gnone/Enlightenment
I find one of the screensavers will lock up the machine and not
allow me to log back in. Is this a known problem? I don't know
the name of the saver but it looks kind of like a moire pattern
that has been quantized into 1/4 inch blocks.

I can go thru and remove lots of screensavers until I find it
by hit and miss but thought I'd ask here for better ideas.

Sure, Linux is Open Source.
But, Linux has nothing to do with stdio.h
If you want to see stdio.h, check out the Free Software Foundation's
FTP site, and download the GLIBC sources (which includes stdio.h)

Oh, BTW, loose the chip on your sholder. It's interfering with your
vision. ;-)

Greetings

I am trying to resetup my Linux box for internet access. I rearanged
my hard drives so that now I have a removable "trayed" hard drives.
Now I am trying to get things setup again. It's been 2 years since I
have messed with my point to point protocol.

I "have" reread the PPP howto. but I seem to be missing something.
The system will dial, access, and log in. But I can't ping anything.
I type "ifconfig" and there will be NO ppp0 device.

Below is all that I have modified to get to where I am now to include
a portion of the /var/log/messages file. I have intentionally omitted
my user name and password.

What am I missing?

I am useing a USR 33.6 modem on a 233mhz Pentum

I don't have SCSI. I wonder why they were created, and I doubt I have
specified SCSI support. Nevermind... I will leave them alone.

I was trying to install Mandrake and RedHat from my second
hard disk. I had it set as a fat32 extended dos partition
(drive g). I had c through f on my first hard drive.

I defragged the drive 2 disk and shrank the fat32
partition to 1.2GB with Partition Magic 4 (in Win98).
Then made the difference a partition with Linux file
system. Also made a swap area with PM4.

Then I tried installing RedHat. I then erased and created
partitions with Druid. Over and over again. I eventually
erased all the Linux partitions with Druid. Thinking I have
a clean disk, I was going to expand the fat32 partition again.
But when I fired up PM4 this time, I get a "Partition error
#113". I look error 113 up and it says:

#113Partitions overlap

The hard-disk partition table contains erroneous values. If
data partitions overlap, writing to one may destroy data in another.

This error is sometimes the result of an OS/2 FDISK bug. If free space
exists within the extended partition, OS/2"s FDISK program allows a
primary partition to be created that overlaps the extended partition.
A logical partition is subsequently created in the space occupied by
 the overlapping primary partition.

If a primary partition overlaps the end of the extended partition but
does not overlap any logical partitions within the extended partition,
the problem can be remedied by patching the partition table.

WARNING! Only qualified individuals should attempt this repair.
An incorrect patch could destroy all data on the hard disk.
= end of error 113 =

I go to DOS and try running FIPS. I've never run it, but
wanted to see what it said. It gave the warning:

The drive contains overlapping partitions. This is a serious
problem.

I ran FDISK. It said some numbers that weren't correct. I
don't remember what they were.

What should I do. The fat32 (drive g) at the moment is having
no problems with reading and writing from Windows or DOS. I
have no way do back up the files on this drive.

My question is what caused this? And can I fix this crossed
partition problem without losing any data?

Also, I should be getting a CD of RedHat in the mail in the
next couple of days. Should I just leave things as they are
and try to install RedHat properly on this disk the way it is?

Thanks for any help. If you could email me, I would appreciate
it. My ISP changes news servers on the fly. I might miss the
reply. Thanks again.
