SuSE 8.2 kernel sources

2003-08-21 Thread Roger Oberholtzer

Doesn't SuSE 8.2 install kernel sources in /usr/src? Is this something you
have to actively select to have installed? I don't see them on my system. Of
course I will add the package, but is this as expected? Or did something go
amiss?

By default the kernel sources are not loaded. DL the latest source and the YAST2/RPM
will install them in /usr/src/linux where is the version number. There will
be a link from /usr/src/linux to this file system, which you have to watch if you have
more than one set of source files!

backing up windows

2003-08-21 Thread Keith Antoine
I have just had an answer to my exhortations to Zeus! A national PC
mag which has for a while been putting in some linux software on its
free cd's, included 'Ext2FS Anywhere 2,5'. It had some blurb about being
able to see linux partitions and files from windows.
I thought that this was one of those windows hacks, but decided to give it
a try. Lo and behold it managed to find and mount the partitions I wished
to see
: i.e /home /backup /build etc. I can transfer files back and forth just as
I can
from a linux booted system.

So I now have the ability to do backups from windows partitions to linux
partitions. What I would like is reccomendations for a win backup program
that can be automated and made to save to a particular destination.

Thanks for the pointer! We use removable disks to do data transfer from our
mobile data collection systems. When they used FAT32, the disk transfer is
much slower than EXT2/3. But this tool may make it possible to resolve that.
Also, lots of small files waste disk space on FATxx.

Thanks!

To write a back up of the windows computer to the ext2, or to read a backup
from a Linux system on a windows box?

When we do a backup of the linux stuff, we have a script that makes a ZIP
file, naming the file with the current date and time (and placing a file in
the backup with that same name). Then, on the windows box, just unpack the
zips in order of file name.

To make similar backups on windows, I would install cygwin (painless
through a windows installer) and use basically the same script. I have not
done this. Our script relies on the find command and a timestamp. I do not
know how the file access times works on FAT16/32 (it is the file system more
than the OS that limits this). If you are interested, I could send you the
script I use. It is nothing fancy, but does lots of error detection to not
be fooled by an incomplete backup.

I have not seen any commercial software that is as lean as I would like that
runs on both OSs to deal with backups in both directions.

Windows XP has a backup utility that can be run from the command line. (From previous
threads, I believe you have windows XP)

To find out more go start, run and type ntbackup.

Get out of the wizard by going to advanced options and look under backing up data in

A simple bat file will do what you want.

As far as YAST wacking configuration files, I don't believe it ever
did. SuSEconfig was the culprit which gets run by default after you do
anything with YAST. However, there is and as far as I know (since 7.2)
has always been the option to disable SuSEconfig if you wanted to do
things by hand. Then you can still use YAST to install packages,
updates, resolve dependencies, etc., and do all your configuration by hand.

 I'd recommend SuSE to anyone.

This is one of the questions asked when configurating a kernel.

Huh? Where?

Look at the BIOS clock. If it's set to your local time, well, you're
running local time. I set the BIOS clock to UTC.

Re: Universal vs local time

2003-08-21 Thread Joel Hammer
Thanks.

Configuring 2.4.20. (lindows source)
Here is the item in .config.

116 # CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT is not set

Here is the help item:

CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT:

Say Y here if your RTC (Real Time Clock a.k.a. hardware clock)
stores the time in GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Say N if your RTC
stores localtime.

Re: windows = virii

I got fed up with the large number of notifications of viruses in my email

So, I guess we know whose machines are infected.

Geez. Its a good thing for MS that there doesn't appear to be product
liablity laws for computer software as you would have with other
products. Otherwise, MS windows might be held responsible for the costs
incurred by these virii. Now, why doesn't some law class look into suing
MS for this?

I'm receiving virii from a spammer who got infected. More than 100 msgs
today between the infected msgs sent to my emaill address and the
bounces for the ones unsing my email address as the sender address :(

BTW, my virus filter works ok :)

Bye!
