Bill already did that.
Flash back to 1995...
When MSN first started it was conceived of as a giant private network.
Popularity of the Internet was still ramping up and Netscape owned the
browser space. Try as Microsoft might, they couldn't compete with the booming
success of the Internet, so MSN was revamped to become a service *on* the
Internet and Microsoft increased even further their efforts to seriously
dominate the browser space by starting to offer their browser free.

Now things have gone full circle. With .Net MS looks to make a stab at
establishing significant control over the Internet - or at least the software
content people are running over it. Bill's ultimate goal will be realized.

I think we all want a machine that we can just use. Linux may take
more time to tweak to get it to where you like it, but it stays there
and doesn't break. I see posts from people who are (and I have nothing
against this, I just don't practice it myself) constantly replacing
software.1.2.3 with software.1.2.4 and causing no end of grief for
themselves and spending more time tweaking and building than using.

Linux is like Lego, if you buy a package, you can follow the plan and
build a little car/plane/boat, or like many Linux users, you can try and
swap out the wheels/wings/hull for a slightly better but not necessarily
more functional set.

I think more emphasis on the fact that Linux _does_ work out of the box,
and less emphasis on the tweakbility is what's needed. He doesn't
_need_ to spend ...time for that crap if he doesn't want to.

Actually, Rick, the important thing to remember is that the practice of mildly
deviant behaviour is quite normal. Just tell your son to promise to only
practice such behaviour in private and wash his hands thoroughly afterwards.

I did that too. My son and one daughter both ended up using linux, since
windows just wouldn't run on either or their two machines, after a while.
My son got a laptop for school, and had to replace windows98 with XP,
because the latter would crash several times a day. XP hasn't crashed yet,
though.
My daughter hates me but uses linux mostly.
My wife's 98 machine is still working fine.
The only reason for using windows is AOL. I thought AOL and MS weren't
getting along, but AOL keeps windows in my house.
