Re: Linux is far from being free of malware??!!

2014-01-05 Thread Andre Rodovalho
I have no problems with malware on Linux. I'm using ubuntu like systems
since 8.04. At the beggining I had dual boot. Since I met VirtualBox, I use
it for testing and also running MS-Windows Only software...

In VBox I can run XP, Windows Server 03, 08, Win7... If you have enough
hardware, it's ok!

Basic Knowledge about security is mandatory, in any OS. If you want some
extra security, you might want to set a firewall and that's it!

  Hi Ali,

Have a read of this article:-

 http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/faq/index.php?page=virus#virus

It is quite a long but in-depth account of linux security issues. In
 summary:-

 1. All operating systems, including linux, are vulnerable to careless
users who install software from dodgy sources.
 2. It is technically possible, but very difficult, to create a virus that
can harm a linux system. The separation of user and root accounts makes it
very difficult for a virus to propagate.
 3. The popular opinion, promoted by MS and companies that want to sell you
AV software, that viruses are not written for linux due to its low usage is
incorrect. Linux is the more popular operating system for the 'industrial'
side of IT such as web servers so a successful attack would yield many
millions of victims. Windows is the easier target.

There is a risk but it is very small. Don't worry.

 Barry T

2014-01-05 Thread David Yentzen
Great information from all. Thanks for sharing. Using the basic security
tips as Nio pointed out ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BasicSecurity ) is a
must. While Linux is more secure than others it is not bullet proof so
reasonable precautions are a must besides the greatest security threat to a
Linux OS is the device that sits in front of the keyboard.

David

Best Linux Alternative To Apple's Aperture?

I'd love to hear what y'all think!

But the replies here seem to be mostly addressing only his first

OBI on DVD and more...

2014-01-05 Thread Andre Rodovalho
I would like to know how can I create a DVD media with OBI and several
Ubuntu flavors or other distros...

The reason for that is, sometimes it is much easier to get a DVD drive than
fighting to boot USB drives on old hardware... With such media, I could
have about 4 distros, properly I could burn amd64 and i386 versions of
Lubuntu, and have many other options to install

I thought I could use the compressed dd image to get a iso file, and maybe
with on this iso add some tarballs to /tarballs directory. But I never did
something like this on Linux. Maybe there is a easier way to get this done
too...

Another thing, I would like to suggest an change on mkusb script. I
recently had to use on the partimage linux. There is no sudo there, so I
could not properly use this script to make a installation media. Root user
is always available on this distro, and also, there is some distros that
have no sudo binary...

So, to get some more generic script, maybe the right thing to do is to
remove all sudo from code, and run the script as root user. In a debian
like distro sudo ./mkusb.

I'm hearing you thoughts...

Re: Best Linux Alternative To Apple's Aperture?

2014-01-05 Thread Israel
Hi Anthony, I am not entirely sure what aperture is, but if you are
looking for something that can edit RAW photos, I'd suggest looking into
RawTherapee, or Darkroom. Shotwell is good at importing and view Raw
photos, but you have to make sure you install all the correct libraries
to view your photos.

So, 2 quick questions...
1. What kind of program is aperture, or what kind of functionality are
you looking for?
2. Do you use multiple types of Cameras, (in other words do you have
cameras that only have CR2 format raw files, or are there multiple types
or cameras/formats)

Glad to hear you are interested in Lubuntu so much!!

Hi Andre,

1. Multiboot

I see your point, but I think it will not be easy for me to make it.

There are several multi-boot systems for USB drives that are easy to
create, but the ones that I know of for DVDs need remastering to be
created. Maybe somebody in the Lubuntu community knows how to do it and
would be prepared to make such a DVD image.

Can *you* how are reading this now do it?

2. One Button Installer on CD/DVD

I agree with Brendan, that Plop is a good alternative.

2014-01-06 04:35, brendanperr...@gmail.com skrev: plop is really good

 http://www.plop.at/
It is really easy for me to use at least.

2.1 I use a Plop CD to start some drivers that can boot a USB pendrive
in my oldest computer, a Compaq Presario 5640 with a 400 MHz Pentium II
CPU and 192 MB RAM. That way I can use the One Button Installer and
install an operating system from a tarball.

2.2 A second alternative would be to make the OBI work from a CD/DVD. A
couple of alternatives might work:

A read/write CD/DVD system is possible but not very standardized, and
I'm afraid it might work only in a few CD/DVD hardware equipments.

Making an OBI iso file by remastering an iso system:

It would be more likely that a remastered iso system would work in most
computers with a CD/DVD drive (to make an iso file live system with the
OBI scripts included). I have never remastered a system, and need help
to learn how to do it or ask someone else to do the remastering, but if
many people want it, I think we should do it.

3. mkusb without sudo

Your question about mkusb should be easier to solve. I just tried to use
it without using sudo directly in the command line (but running as root
via sudo -s).

The current version works like that for me. But I found that there are a
few calls with sudo, that should be removed from the script (two calls
of parted and one of fdisk), the others are only text strings in echo
statements.
-
grep 'sudo ' ~/bin/mkusb
for i in /dev/[^f]d?; do sudo parted -ls|grep -B1 $i|tr '\n' '\t';echo
;done
   tj=$(sudo parted -ls|grep -B1 $j|tr '\n' ' '|sed s/Model:\ //;echo
)
 tj=$(sudo fdisk -lu $j 2/dev/null|grep $j:|sed s/\,\ .*//)
  echo sudo $0 file.iso
  echo sudo $0 file.img.gz
  echo sudo $0 file.img.xz
  echo sudo $0 wipe-all
  echo sudo $0 wipe-1
  echo sudo $0 $1
echo sudo lshw -class disk # $hlptxt
  echo sudo fdisk -lu 2/dev/null|grep /dev/[^f]d|sort #
$hlptxt
-

Can you try it after removing those sudos yourself, or do you want me to
upload a release candidate to test?

If that does not work, there might be something else, that is used by
the bash script in an Ubuntu based system, that is not available in the
other system (in partimage linux). In that case, do you get an error
message or warning?

Best regards
Nio

Re: Migrate many micro and small enterprises to Lubuntu in Brazil

Hello, my name is João, Im from Brazil, I like and use Lubuntu.
I know that in April, 2014 Microsoft will stop providing updates and
support for Windows XP users, so I decided to help many micro and small
enterprises (like small businesses, for example: bakeries, restaurants,
schools, small offices,...) in Brazil to change to another system and try
not download ilegal windows 7 or windows 8 and try not buy a new computer
with better CPU and GPU, so Im trying to convince many small businesses
companies to migrate to Lubuntu (because it will have 5 years support in
14.04 LTS and of course it is free).

But in the other hand, many people are asking me if the system
is reliable, who is paying it (because if nobody pays, you have to receive
 money to continue the system).
I didnt know what to answer and it made me think about it:
*Why doesnt Lubuntu do the same thing that Kubuntu made in the past
and look for a company that sponsors (financially) the system? Like Kubuntu
is supported financially by Blue Systems *(
 http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-to-be-sponsored-by-blue-systems)

Other thing that I wanna know about Lubuntu Team: Many small companies
have shown interest in migrating to Lubuntu, but they asked me if I could
support them, providing support if they had some doubts using the system in
the future, I agreed with them, but there are much more companies that me
(alone) can support, so I asked them if they would pay for this support
(like U$S10~U$S15 per company per 10 computers by month) because with this
money I could contract more brazilian employees to help me supporting them,
 they agreed with it.
*But I wanna know if Lubuntu Team thinks that it is wrong by myself to
''get money'' supporting Lubuntu company users in Brazil?* (Because the
system is free, I would only get money for the support, because we have
energy tax, potencial employees to pay and others costs) Is it wrong to get
money with Lubuntu support or Lubuntu Team doesnt see problem with that?
(Im asking it, because I respect so much all people that made Lubuntu and
make it until today :D )

understand so much the interface, so PLEASE if one of you (or many of you)

You had some good replies already. I would like to add Digikam, a good

HDD space, but they create no other problem.

Gimp is a good tool for general manual editing. ImageMagick does it in

The answer from the one and only Lubuntu Dev (who doesn't have enough time
