[LUTE] Re: Double Meantone Theorbo and Guitar variants
Interesting idea... trying to imagine the chords in my head. So are all the bass courses of your theorbo a 4th lower? Down to a very low D? And what kind of string is on the 14th course to make that note? A theorbo a Tone higher--though for this temperament I prefer slightly the G version. 6 Fretted coursed have the option to tune the upper strings like the bass viol. 8 Fretted can have a D and a C which is good for later baroque music Other variants are possible--A fretted low C is excellent gives a fuller C Major chord as well a a true low D Flat. [LUTE] Re: Import duty for instrument shipped to US
Check out the US trade commission website: http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/bychapter/index.htm It's got most info you need, although digging through everything to find what's applicable can take a little time. Anyway, if I'm reading this correctly, you will have to pay 4.6% on the declared value. (Hopefully the maker didn't describe it on the paperwork as a guitar because that would make it 8.7%.) I'm not sure what kind of duty there is on a case, but if you bought it as a package deal, then I think it's all included. Here's a link for the chapter on musical instruments. http://hotdocs.usitc.gov/docs/tata/hts/bychapter/0702c92.pdf You can also read the general notes section for more info on how to read this chart: http://hotdocs.usitc.gov/docs/tata/hts/bychapter/0702gn.pdf Good luck. Does anyone know if I will have to pay import duty? Does it just show up on my doorstep? [LUTE] measurements please
Dear collective lute wisdom, I'm wondering if some of you with smallish renaissance g-lutes (57-60 cm stringlength) would be willing to take a measurement for me. Could you please measure the length of the center rib on your lute from the bottom of the soundboard, around the curve of the bowl, to the neck block (using a tape measure)? Cm or inches would be fine. I've got some really nice looking maple, but I'm not sure if it would be long enough to build a lute. And if you know upon which historical model your lute is based, I'd appreciate that info also. Thanks in advance. Kevin __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [LUTE] Christmas lute song?
Hello again, Can anyone out there suggest any lute songs (high voice) which would be appropriate for a Christmas concert? Secular texts pertaining to peace, joy, etc., would also be welcome. Thanks. flying with a theorbo
Hello all, I need to bring my theorbo (a big one) to the Berkeley Festival this summer. Can anyone give me some advice for flying with one of these things? Which airlines are the most instrument friendly (within US)? Gate check? Pay extra for oversize luggage? The theorbo is insured, but should I also buy extra liability insurance from the airline? Since I have to leave the case unlocked, and they will inspect it, how should I pack it? Any other tricks of the trade? Thanks for your help. Kevin __ Do you Yahoo!? Re: Folger Library access
Access to the Folger Library is limited to those with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, or graduate students writing a Ph.D. thesis. These persons may apply for a reader's card by writing a letter of application and sending two letters of reference to Richard Kuhta, Librarian, The Folger Shakespeare Library, 201 East Capitol Street. S.E., Washington, D.C. 20003. Other persons who feel they have a particular need to use the collections may apply for special permission status, also to Mr. Kuhta. http://www.folger.edu/library/use.asp --- Stewart McCoy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Daniel, It is always wise, some might say courteous, to contact the library in advance. Different libraries operate different systems, and some are easier to get into than others. The British Library do their best to put you off (they actually say so), and a lot of time is lost once you arrive, filling in forms and being photographed. At the Bodleian Library time is lost not only with forms and photographs, but also having to put your hand in the air to swear an oath not to set fire to the place. They don't mind if you don't wear an academic gown for the oath, as long as you are not a student there. Both libraries require written references in advance from a person of standing. Libraries I walked straight into years ago now have cumbersome time-losing security checks before letting people have access to their books. I say time-losing rather than time-wasting, because I think libraries are right to be cautious. I have not had the pleasure of visiting the Folger Library, but I think you should contact them before you go.
