Re: [Lynx-dev] directv blocking lynx
Well, Chuck-and-All, I am subscribed to press advisories from NATO, but this morning's item you had to visit their site to read or download a pdf. More-and-more we see L I N K S works, while L Y N X has a 403 error, even after fooling with a user-agent http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/events_226992.htm Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] directv blocking lynx
Well Name, as DirectTV-and-U-Verse are part of the same family, I was just pointing out how their newer platforms have it. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] directv blocking lynx
Well Jude, for me it just hangs, but it does work in L I N K S. While its great they have accessibility in these devices, they say they will never have it in AT U-Verse, as they will never build another box. I know this as I filed an FCC complaint. Chime

[Lynx-dev] Sites Aren't Hanging After New Version
Well, to my pleasant surprise, a newer version of LYNX showed up in my Debian updates, this morning. The issue we talked about on Monday seems to have been cleared up. Lynx Version 2.9.0 (15 Jan 2024) Thank you for fixing this. Chime
[Lynx-dev] Lots of Sites Hanging for 5minutes?
Hi All: First of all, my append issue in print menu resumed working well later or next day. Now on my main desktop console machine as well as a laptop, both running different distros, many sites are just hanging for around 5 minutes. This seems only in L Y N X. My main machine is in Debian SID, while the laptop is an Arch. Going over to Shellworld, no issue, but my LYNX is much later. Also, while L Y N X is hanging, I looked at processes, notice 2 are running for lynx. This also seems strange. I even wondered if there were a daemon which I needed to start. At first, it was mostly cordcuttersnews.com but now, almost any web request, but duckduckgo goes in a normal amount of time. Are their any obvious things we can try to trouble shoot this one? Thanks so much in advance Chime
[Lynx-dev] An Issue with Print Append?
Hi All: All-of-a-sudden my print menu, option6 append is broken. Now it hangs after "printing file, please wait" Something like append to file. At that point nothing will type except for controll+c. Even if I type a file name to append, it won't save. I am useing the latest Debian SID Lynx Version 2.9.0 (15 Jan 2024) libwww-FM 2.14, SSL-MM 1.4.1, GNUTLS 3.8.3, ncurses 6.4.20240113(wide) Built on linux-gnu. Back again live. This is rather an inconvenience, as I save alot of news articles, appending as the day continues. Here seems to be the line in my lynx.cfg file DOWNLOADER:Append to a local file:/bin/echo -n "Append to filename\: "; read fn; csh -c "cat %s >> $fn":TRUE It feels like this just broke for me quite recently. Thanks so much in advance Chime

[Lynx-dev] Unable to Save Charactor Set Changes?
Hi All: Many times I am running lynx along with rdrview to get an article without a toolbar. On my local machine I get symbols such as ~B @D. To see a more normal view, I go in lynx options menu, search for utf, then arrow down to assumed document charactor set. I want utf-8 for this one as well, but it will only stay during a current session. Editing lynx.cfg in nano nor trying different cfg files, it still comes up as iso8859-1. I am running a latest Debian SID version, however, over on Shellworld running Lynx Version 2.9.0dev.10 (11 Aug 2021) On Shellworld its the set I want. Meanwhile here at home Lynx Version 2.9.0 (15 Jan 2024) I even coppied that Shellworld cfg and ran it locally, still not the charactor set I need. Can some1 please suggest how I can force that option to stay. Thanks so much in advance. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] 2.9.0dev.12m regression (title bar)

Re: [Lynx-dev] ANN: lynx2.9.0
Thank you Jude for those good ideas, however, I almost never use espeak, as I am running Speakup with a DecTalk. Most times I only see those charactors when useing rdrview. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] ANN: lynx2.9.0
Well, Jude, Speakup says they are tildas, along with a capital B and capital D. Either way, how would I fix these? Thanks in advance Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] ANN: lynx2.9.0
Well, `thank you so much. While I know for you, that was a simple solution, it solved several major inconveniences. Seems each time I update and install manually, I have similar issues. Anyway, looks as if all are back to nornal again. Unrelated, while I am here, I am useing rdrview with LYNX to read web-pages without any tool-bars. While many pages load just fine, the text of articles have these anoying tildas, like this example: Israel ~B ~D s Argument at The Hague: We are Incapable of Genocide Please inform what change I would need to make to get rid of those? Thanks once again Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] ANN: lynx2.9.0
Well, Thomas-and-All, I seemingly ran a successful install, however a number of my settings are gone. Looks like I am still useing a lynx.cfg of my own, but a remapping of extern page-and-link are mentioned in errors. Also, viewing pages with a "v" from Alpine didn't like "nested tables" But the worst, it won't load pages with an "ssl" You would think a newer install would check for these settings-and-not completely treat as a new install. Can folks please inform, how can I get things back to normal? O, this is Debian SID. Thanks so much in advance. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] lynx and webmail interfaces?
Hi Karen: 1 of my Linux experts setup Alpine with fastmail. But, no, because fastmail is rather graphical, I cannot go in-and-ajust anything. Even my hosted web-site, I have no idea of finding out a quota of space, so I upload a file, if it completes, I am lucky. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] lynx and webmail interfaces?
Well Jude-and-All, with Fastmail, I can go through a process in Alpine with an "s" for save, controll+t, I arrow down through folders until "spam training" after that I go down again to "spam learn" Certainly spam asassin was alot less complicated. Not only that, but there were white-and-black list files you could edit by hand. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] lynx and webmail interfaces?
Well, Karen, I have had fastmail for some years, since that 4 day Shellworld outage in May. Once fastmail is setup, it works well, but several functions in their interface, you must use a graphical browser. I also have my web-site hosted by them-and-they took away regular ncftp access, now I must use cadaver. Chime
[Lynx-dev] Links Disappearing from BookMark File?
Hi All: I have suspected this for a while. In both my own L Y N X machine as well as Shellworld, I have items which either go away after adding a new bookmark, or an actual link name is replaced with "hidden-link" In that case I can still visit the site. Has any1 else ever had this happen-and-are their solutions? I am running a January 2023 Debian SID version. Thanks so much in advance. On my local machine, I added a bookmark-and-maybe 5 links went away. In 28years I've never seen this. Chime

Re: [Lynx-dev] Deleting Local Files to trash?
Thank you Tomas. That .h2 item was not in my lynx.cfg, so I pasted in your instructions. But after that, can I define a command for deleting files? Exactly what belongs in that file, so I can act on an alias? As I mentioned last evening, del is aliased to /usr/bin/trash-put Thanks so much in advance Chime
[Lynx-dev] Deleting Local Files to trash?
Hi All: After several accidental deletions of file I wish I had again, I had a set of great advice on another blind Linux list. There are at least 2 trash programs which work quite well. So I have a "del" aliased to /usr/bin/trash-put. However, when I am viewing a local directory from LYNX, if I either manually delete or tags items to get rid of, I suppose these are done with an rm command? Would I need another alias to have these files also endup in trash until I empty them? I am accessing these with lynx . Or would I add something in lynx.cfg? Thanks so much in advance Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Playing dot mkv files in LYNX?
I remember an odd case where there was art work in an mp3 file, which locked my system until it was finished playing. While I couldn't even change consoles, some1 from the outside could kill a process. I vaguely remember these mp3s were somehow playing in vlc. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Playing dot mkv files in LYNX?
Well, Travis, will take a look. Whats fascinating, I can rename an mkv to an mp4, now it will play in LYNX. Here are entries in lynx.cfg SUFFIX:.mkv:audio/mkv SUFFIX:.mkv:video/mkv SUFFIX:.mp4:video/mpeg Now here are items in dot mailcap audio/mkv; mpv --really-quiet --audio-device=alsa/plughw:CARD=AudioPCI,DEV=0 '%s'; nametemplate=%s.mkv video/mkv; mpv --really-quiet --no-video --audio-device=alsa/plughw:CARD=AudioPCI,DEV=0 '%s'; nametemplate=%s.mkv Similar seems to work in all other cases other than mkv. Thanks in advance Chime
[Lynx-dev] Playing dot mkv files in LYNX?
Hi All: Seems almost all other audio-and-video file types I can launch LYNX-and-have them play with mpv. However, .mkv files seemingly will not launch, they act like I wanna download, even though they are already on my hard-drive. Thanks so much in advance for any tips. Chime

[Lynx-dev] CloudFront May be Blocking us?
Hi All: This seems to be happening more than I would like! Nearly every day I visit www.dvidshub.net All was fine until maybe last Wednesday when I began seeing an error 403, but even unchecking a user-agent didn't help, as I saw a Coud Front error. I did contact dvids support, who asked for a screeen shot. But in trying to contact cloudfront, not only are they saying support for IE ended on July 30, but without java I cannot submit a ticket. And no, L Y N X is certainly not an only browser where I cannot connect. As an experiment, I was able to connect on my Wife's windows7 machine. This site is valuable in finding out about live-and-recorded Defense Department videos. Thanks so much in advance Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] For Blind Internet Users, the Fix Can Be Worse Than the Flaws
Well, Travis, don't you love it when even when you view a news-letter as html, they still write-and-say "you haven't opened an e-mail in a long time"? Like, who are they kidding? Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] For Blind Internet Users, the Fix Can Be Worse Than the Flaws
Thank you Karen for a tarific article. 2 things jump out at me. First, in none of those interviews do they mention which browsers are being used, but I imagine they would be all graphical or in windows? 2nd, the requirement to include javascript. Obviously we know, for us, who enjoy L Y N X, this is a problem with no solution, other than for lynx to eventually have some way of dealing with it. Otherwise, for those of us who enjoy text browser, an Internet experience will just be either a fond memory of the 1990s or a continuing frustration. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] NYTimes RSS feeds
Well Dan-and-All, another option would be saving an rss file-and-running it through urlview Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Lynx vs Links vs w3m
Well, I `much prefer L Y N X as I understand its print/save menu. I am forever saving news articles or useing a LYNX external to download youtube items. I find an e l i n k s type of menu agrivating. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] 'File exists. Overwrite? (y/n)'
Hi Karen-and-All: An a would just append not over-write. Right now, given that choice, I say "no" then I think its control+g to cancel. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Why Won't this Site Work in LYNX?
Well, Karen, I certainly agree, figuring out some seemless way of processing sites would be wonderful. I mean as we've discussed on this list, there are sites I go to nearly each day which have that 403 error, so I either run an L Y N X external or just see a blank page-and-go in an options menu-and-uncheck the user agent box. I shouldn't have to do all of that. Now to answer your question, wget is mostly used to grab files which begin with http. wget had an easier time with that article, so I processed it locally. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Why Won't this Site Work in LYNX?
Well, thanks Karen, I've always had issues understanding links and elinks. Meanwhile, I did finally have some success the long way around. I ran wget with that url, changed the name from index.html.1 to gri.html. Then I ran rdrview -b lynx gri.html which gave me a clear 52 lines of an article without any tool bars. The funny thing was that wget would even grab that story. Now, I am wondering if adding wget as an external in LYNX would help? Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Why Won't this Site Work in LYNX?
Thank you David for your analysis. Since I really have little understanding of user agent strings, is their anything specific I can type in L Y N X to process this article, which I not only want to save the text of, but eventually explore what else is there? Thanks so much in advance Chime
[Lynx-dev] Why Won't this Site Work in LYNX?
Hi All: 1 of my google news-alerts pointed me to an article which first gave me a 403 error, but even after ajusting an option for user agent, still says "cannot connect" This does work in elinks, also LINKS, and w3m. However, what else I am not understanding. In w3m there are maybe 171 lines on 1 page, while both other browsers have at least 2 pages. I have my screen set at 180lines by 270 columns. Here is an url https://globalriskinsights.com/2022/05/the-russo-ukrainian-war-and-nagorno-karabakhs-faltering-ceasefire/ I would rather access this in L Y N X as I better understand how to save files. I also want to run this story through rdrview. I've also just tried the main site, same result. Thanks so much in advance. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] 'File exists. Overwrite? (y/n)'
Well, maybe best of both worlds, y/n/a for append. Chime
[Lynx-dev] Feature Suggestion, Tab-Completion in Change Directory
Hi All: I really like-and-use alot of capitol C to change directories while saving items. Considering LYNX is aware if I type a directory wrong or one which is not there, it will say "no such dir" Would it be possible to add tab-completion? For the record, I am in tcsh. Thanks so much in advance Thanks so much in advance Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Waiting for response message
Well Dan, while I have had a slight increase in these as well, what about an option of "partial loading of pages"? Usually before I try a controll+c I hit a z. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Handling sites that don't send content-type (was: lynx word bleeding?)
Actually Karen, once I alter the setting, I can view the site fine just for the cuttent session, so at least for now its a work around. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Handling sites that don't send content-type (was: lynx word bleeding?)
Well, Karen, I agree with you about possible differences in the files. I ran an exec tcsh which is similar to re-logging in. I could try an unalias. My own machine is still having an issue with that site, even trying to change an option in lynx.cfg. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Handling sites that don't send content-type (was: lynx word bleeding?)
Well, Karen, I was about to think you were correct. I tried switching an option in my LYNX to html, exited, and went back to that site, no changeThanks Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Handling sites that don't send content-type (was: lynx word bleeding?)
Well, Karen-and-Luke, that radio tapes site has not changed for me on Shellworld, I still need to type lynx.old But yes, I have had my own lynx.cfg since I joined Shellword. Certainly glad Karen's sites are working well now. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] lynx word bleeding?
So Dan, yes, I have my own file, so what specificly would I put in there for that site? Would it be a rule? Thanks in advance Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] lynx word bleeding?
Hi Karen-and-All: As always the LYNX options menu acts like it will save, even when checking that box on link4 "save options to disk" but in this case it did not save. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] lynx word bleeding?
Well, I took a look in an options menu in an older LYNX on Shellworld, where that particular setting is not there at all. On my Debian system with a current LYNX, I can switch over to html-and-yes I can enjoy that page. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] lynx word bleeding?
Thank you Mouse for examining. I did write my contact at that site. At the time I figured it had changed recently, but actually it were the LYNX changes on Shellworld. I remember there was a site back maybe 2008 or so which I had to switch to the source-code-and-back to regular view-and-it would correct. Just located the site of that program which went off in 2010, looks fine now, so I guess there's no point in my posting an url. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] lynx word bleeding?
Hi All: I still use Shellworld, as well as my own Debian setup. Funny thing is I visit www.radiotapes.com On my machine I only see raw html. Meanwhile with an older LYNX on Shellworld, I see the site fine, I have no idea why these 2 versions are seeing this site so differently? Thanks so much in advance Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] the frustration of this kind of advice, was about user agent headers
Hi Karen: If you want to try a rehash, you would need to type tcsh then type rehash. Then to get back to your familliar shell, type exit Hope those will help Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] the frustration of this kind of advice, was about user agent headers
Hi Karen: Aliases in Linux are no more a risk than writing or running a batch file in DOS, just a short cut to save an amount of typing. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] the frustration of this kind of advice, was about user agent headers
Hi Travis: I am in TCSH, so I thought to type rehash now Lynx is back again. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] the frustration of this kind of advice, was about user agent headers
Hi Travis: Whats really interesting is that last I looked, L Y N X seems to be gone from Shellworld, whether I use an alias or even type which lynx says "command not found" I am fortunate that mostly I just use Shellworld for rss feeds, a majority of mail I deal with locally. Chime

[Lynx-dev] https Again?
Well, just like back in July, this whole ssl thing has bit me again. After reading Jude-and-Tomas replies, I ran their options, but then I noticed when running which lynx on consoles which were run after a "rehash" says /usr/local/bin/lynx. Meanwhile other consoles here in TCSH Debian Sid say /usr/bin/lynx So when running lynx from a command-prompt, I not only receive an ssl error, but my externals are not working. However, as alpine calls lynx from /usr/bin/lynxshould I just run sudo cp /usr/local/bin/lynx /usr/bin/lynx As an opinion, I would think an install should respect if ssl was already working. Thanks so much in advance Chime

Re: [Lynx-dev] Any solution for youtube searching
Well, Jude, little did I remember, we had installed pipe-viewer. Just tried it now, received a 410 error. Problem I had with straw-viewer, an amount of results were strange, inn that the 2nd group of items were exactly from the first group. So if there were 34 items, the first 17 would list twice. I understood the reason Trizen made other similar players had to do with an API expiring. And, not to blow my own horn, I had suggested-and-now in youtube-viewer, we have a favorites list, you create-and-access with -fc but when displaying your favorite list of channels, it will show the channel names from youtube, not the nicknames you write in the config. I want to suggest an option to list either how many total videos in a user or number of pages. Chime
Re: [Lynx-dev] Any solution for youtube searching
Hi Jude-and-All: Jude, first of all, I am not familliar with "pipe-viewer"? I've tried straw-viewer-and-I use youtube-viewer several times a day. What does pipe-viewer off that youtube-viewer isn't giving you? In relation to the original question, there were at 1 time some accessibile web-sites where you could search or work with youtube videos. There was a site which didn't last long, something like invidia. Anyway, unless something with faster downloads comes along, I am fairly happy with youtube-viewer. Thanks in advance Chime

Another aspect which makes it more challenging to get a hold of site owners, in the last 3 years or so "whois" most of the time will not display an actual contact address. Well Dan, I completely agree. Seemingly no other browsers that I know of have this issue. In the mean time I can suggest creating an external when you run in to such a sight. Well Thorsten, this goes beyond Politico. Here are 2lines from a story in Hollywood Reporter. Notice a w is missing from the first word, also what finishes line2 hat is a big deal. It is a big deal to the city of Boston, it is a big deal to the United States, it is a big deal for Black and brown communities, BNC president and CEO Princell Hair tells The Hollywood Reporter. hat is what you get on BNC that you won get anywhere else.^J Back again live, my 2lines in NANO became 4lines in Alpine. [Lynx-dev] Missing First Letter?
Well, this seems strange? On my local machine running the latest Debian Lynx2.9.0 dev6. When reading sites such as Politico, many times a first letter of aword is missing. Many times this surrounds a bracketed link, but more often, its a first word of a line. Speakup seems to realize there is a symbol as it makes a sound as I arrow over it. Has any1 ever seen this? Do I need to switch to another charactor set? I also notice if the page has no html, then it is seemingly perfect. Some lines of these Politico pages end with a carrot j. Re: [Lynx-dev] help with ff.net.
Well, first of all, Karen, w3m is another text browser, but seldom have I ever had a site only work in it. We certainly have it on shellworld, but while there are certainly ways of configuring so you can tab around, I don't think you can number links. Now for at least 1year there is a site which I wish I could access, but it also has DOS protection, also Cloudflur. The site is www.radiodiscussions.com I wrote that site-and-he said he would look in to it, but while the trouble went away for a short time, its certainly been raging. Its one of the better radio forums-and-I hate having to bother friends of mine who are in windows to read me an index. Re: [Lynx-dev] Hotkey Binding to Command with Current URL?

[Lynx-dev] Can I Set a User Agent for an Individual Site?
Hi All: There are at least 3 sites I visit frequently where I receive an anoying 403 error. So each time I go in options and uncheck the user agent box. Can some1 please inform, can I set these on a per site basis? 2 of the sites involved, radioinsight.com Meanwhile nationalinterest.org That one I encounter an error when reading an article. Re: [Lynx-dev] online radio station playlist.
Wow Karen, that looks tricky. Sure link 12 is "recently played" but then link 96 is an option list, what some call a drop down, so you can select todays date from the list. Problem is the next link is javascript. There didn't seem to even be a place to force a submit. An only idea I have, if you go some where around link 99, there is a search box. Maybe there would be a phrase such as "4pm playlist september 29" I sincerely hope some1 else has a better solution for you Chime ___ Lynx-dev mailing list Lynx-dev@nongnu.org https://lists.nongnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lynx-dev

[Lynx-dev] Any Chance of a "reader mode" in LYNX?
Hi All: Well, now that it seems an `extreme number of sites have their printer friendly articles hidden in some sort of javascript, a good friend imformed me that Safari has a reader mode which strips all clutter, including toolbars. Wondering if something like that would be possible in Lynx? And if it were, I would still want to be able to save an article in that form. I have no idea which other browsers have these functions? Re: [Lynx-dev] searching for videos on YouTube
Well Russ-and-All, there are 2 other alternative solutions which work for myself. #1 I would grab the latest version of Trizen's program, youtube-viewer which you can run from a commandline with a user or keyword. You receive a numbered list of results to download directly. #2 Setup youtube-viewer as an external in Lynx, so you can highlight an url and save to a shell or download directly. And obviously youtube-dl will grab exact urls. Chime ___ Lynx-dev mailing list Lynx-dev@nongnu.org https://lists.nongnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lynx-dev
Re: [Lynx-dev] Any idea what one can do about the people who feel the need to block lynx
Hi Claudio: Just an opinion, but I think an Internet culture has gone far past our favorite friendly browsers. Yes its rather inconvenient when traveling to one of these sites with a 403 error, then having to go in an options menu and uncheck the user agent box, before submitting. Sure thats anoying, but these sites where you just get a blank page such as that of my Cable TV company at spectrum.net Or these sites like radiodiscussions.com which employ DOS cloud protection. Obviously there are millions of sites which either require javascript or make it hard to use without it. Its been many years since I was able to talk a webmaster in to restoring a printer friendly page at the BBC for one. Now, as so many of these web site owners are so hungup on javascript, their minds are made up. But almost as bad, its much more of a challenge to write, as "whois" will not show an exact contact. Obviously I wish you luck, but short of an FCC or Supreme Court intervention, we may be out of luck Chime ___ Lynx-dev mailing list Lynx-dev@nongnu.org https://lists.nongnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lynx-dev
Re: [Lynx-dev] Downloading mp2 files
Well, while I cannot help with the core dump, I can suggest a couple of options about those mp2 files. You would probably need an entry in your mime types file so they handle them in a way you are used to. Next, at least for now, just highlight the file-and press a d to begin saving. When its finished, you can save it with either a different name or location. Chime ___ Lynx-dev mailing list Lynx-dev@nongnu.org https://lists.nongnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lynx-dev
Re: [Lynx-dev] Extra blank Lines?
Well, sure, but going here will give a slightly different view of this C-Span schedule. Please notice the 4 blank lines after link number 57. https://mailchi.mp/c-span/se1wt96cng-6348254?e=c6cd44fad5 Viewing that same link on Shellworld, running an older Lynx, there are no more than 1 blank anywhere. [Lynx-dev] Extra blank Lines?
Hi All: Since I am more often running lynx on my local Debian machine with 2.9.0 dev5 instead of a 2.8.9 version on a remote shell-account. In the later Debian version, in some web-pages, I hear sometimes 5 or 6 consecutive blank lines, meanwhile an exact same page on a remote shell may only have 1 or none. Both lynx configs have trim blank lines as well as collapse br tags, but obviously on the later version, its not working well. I am mostly running Debian SID. Re: [Lynx-dev] changing lynx default homepage from the comand line?
Hi David-and-All, I just looked-and-there are around 22 user names here on Shellworld, including some with more than 1 account. Certainly an amount of annual income from even that many accounts is nothing to sneeze at. O-and-David, speaking of the Wayback Machine, I was never able to accomplish this in Lynx. I wanted to go back before the New York Times-and-most other NewsPapers added javascript so I couldn't get to their printer friendly pages. Re: [Lynx-dev] changing lynx default homepage from the comand line?
Well Karen, if you have bookmarks enabled, you can just type from a commandline lynx -book You will then see all your bookmarks, which like any other page, you can type a link number or arrow-and-highlight an item. Now probably back on Firday I inquired if there were a way of invoking an actual bookmark from a commandline? As an example if I want to go to bookmark 145, are their ways of doing that?
