at least someone else interested in tufte-latex!

Currently experimenting myself with tufte-handout on LyX to make new
templates when seeing your messages, I did the same myself: switched the
same file to Book(tufte)

= without problem, with the correct result.

Being on MacOSX (unknowing about MikTeX and YAP) , unfortunately I can't
judge, wether the problem there might be connected with the OS(-version)
or missing a MiKTeX font.  So, the only hint from me in the moment is,
to check (again), wether the necessary LaTeX packages, named in the tufte
sample file(s), are installed (I suppose, yes).

So I hope, that the creator of the actual layout files, Uwe Stöhr, can
help with your problem.

And: what happens, if you create a (minimal) new book (Tufte) file in LyX?

BTW, my tufte-latex is the actual 3.5.0

protocoll I found:

but `2008/11/14 v3.01 KOMA-Script' was expected!
You should not use classes, packages or files from
different KOMA-Script versions.

That is, I use the newest version of KOMA-Script (2008/11/14 v3.01),  
I can't find out what I missed to install or to configure.


Any hint?

MacPort, because the rtf2latex2e modul/application(?) is said to be  
Unix.


But I have problems to use the MacPort at all, not even to know  
wether it is correctly installed. In the thread Import RTF  Lyx 1.6  
error I had no answer from Konrad Hofbauer or someone else for my  
problem. So I try again with the specific subject - knowing that this  
this is beneath the focus of this LyX-list. But it's a problem to use  
a LyX feature on MacOSX.


So if somebody has installed MacPorts and can give a hint, I'll  
thankful.

I tried out (with ... --version) all directories that in my opinien  
and searching could have that what you call the LyX binary, but  
always the same response:


-bash: ./lyx: No such file or directory
or:  lyx: No such file or directory

I even tried the same with Lyx ... and ./LyX ...

- with the same result.

Can you tell me where on your platform or normally the LyX binary  
resides? What's the exact file name of it (so that I can search for it)?

understood by the Mac-OSX terminal as well, but searches only in  
certain directories, so it gave as response:


no lyx in /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin /usr/local/bin /usr/texbin

Sorry for breaking the thread with this excursion. Go ahead with  
Fast typing - LyX follows slowly only, but that is - for the moment  
- not a problem in my LyX.

and searching could have that what you call the LyX binary, but  
always the same response:

Can you tell me where on your platform or normally the LyX binary

not for the first time I got today an LyX when clicking show pdf an  
error message:

That was after adding an TeX code for another footnoteB (from the -  
loaded - manyfoot package), because I'm using for that the handout  
(tufte) layout because of the many sidenotes I need.


But because - at a certain point, when LaTeX (via LyX) said too many  
floats - I changed to the TeX-box \footnoteB command to get a real  
footnote. Which normally gives the planned result.


If the error message The file doesn't exist ... .pdf is a known  
problem, I ask:


== how to come out of this situation best?

I found out by trial and error, that I deleted the last TeX inset  
\footnoteB{...}, (but after many other trials, even after clothing  
and reopening LyX, after deleting the LyX - /tmp ... xyz-files and so  
on).


Regained functionality of LyX in making and showing a pdf result, I  
reintroduced the TeX-inset \footnoteB and it worked.


Fine for the project. But Question:

= are there reasons for that behaviour of LyX and/or other ways than  
just trying out, deleting the last inset(s) and remaking them?


== What might be the reason of the LaTeX-error about too many  
flouts when inserting footnotes = sidenotes in the handout  
(tufte) class, even if on the page where I am working and on the

If only I had guessed this success of my asking about IPA and my  
tufte-suggestion I could have saves weeks and months of searching and  
learning, swinging from LyX to LaTeX and ConTeXt and back! Now it is  
clear for me: I'm working with LyX for the Westphalian project of  
myself!


- Thereover I advice those who are interested in using an outstanding  
paper style to have a look at that LyX class. Incidentally I'm using  
it in the moment not for scientific papers but for Westphalian  
verses, stories and anekdotes (with some linguistical explanations).

How to change pdf viewer?

How can one configure LyX to use another pdf viewer when clicking the  
view pdf (pdf-latex) button?


I could not find out. It depends what is set automatically during  
installation.


Actually I would like to disburden Adobe Acrobat Reader from this  
task because too slow and change to Skim (or PDFView).

Thanks, it works finally. But for someone else who also might want to  
change the pdf viewer I add: it it not sufficient to give in the path  
to the application package but to the application EXECutable itself,

Salve,

How can one configure LyX to use another pdf viewer when clicking the  
view pdf (pdf-latex) button?


I could not find out. It depends what is set automatically during  
installation.


Actually I would like to disburden Adobe Acrobat Reader from this  
task because too slow and change to Skim (or PDFView).

Thanks, it works finally. But for someone else who also might want to  
change the pdf viewer I add: it it not sufficient to give in the path  
to the application package but to the application EXECutable itself,  
at least on Mac-OSX, in my case:

and tipographic features of the \documentclass{tufte-handout}, with  
wich I had LaTeXed the draft of the project until the problem of IPA- 
input  -output came over me, into LyX-settings.

BTW (2), I find the document class tufte-layout worth to be  
transformed into a LyX document class, style or template - for the  
time being I did not find a way to import the sample-handout into Lyx.

LyX has utf-8 input possibility, it works well with German umlaute  
(ä, ü, ö, ß), but if you input real IPA characters like


ɸ ɣ χ ɟ ɑ ʃ

it will not work. Instead you get

LyX: latex errors
Package imputenc error: Unicode char \u8: not set up for use with LaTeX

Can anybody tell me, what to configure in document settings and  
preamble or wherever to be able to input IPA characters and get them  
in output?

template, Class Options mostly begin with a comma (,) - in order to  
get  the options - even after different out- and uncommenting by the  
user - within the \KOMAoptions{} command comma-seperated, but my  
given template

= in ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.5/templates/default
the first option (not commented out in the template) begins with a  
comma:

,fromalign=center% alignment of the address
and causes the latex-error.

As another workarround (after the first aid of Jürgen) I uncommented  
the pagenumber=... option two lines before in the template -  
interesting: the first one of the outcommented options without a  
comma before (because uncommenting it was the first intention of the  
template authors?)! -This gives anyway a good solution, because  
nevertheless the pagenumber will only be typesetted if the letter has  
more than one page (and then only beginning with page 2), and in that  
case it normally should be wanted by the author of a letter.


Now, also in LyX this part of my KOMA-letter2 template preamble looks

Bad luck: only after working on this answer I detected that in the  
KOMA-letter2.lyx template within the LyX-application packet (in: / 
Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/templates/
there is a functioning KOMA-letter2-template. "pagenumber=" is still  
commented out, but the first uncommented option (here: "fromalign=")  
begins without comma. So, this template would work too. Might be that  
I, after upgrading LyX, had missed/failed to copy the templates newly  
into my home-template-folder. Perhaps I should test this with other  
disfunctioning lyx templates, too (when needed)...


Howsoever, the KOMA-letter2.lyx template now works correct on my  
computer!

are there bugs in the LyX-templates?

I try to use the koma-letter2.lyx template with LyX 1.5.6 an Mac-OSX  
10.4 with German localisation, but even not changing nothing when  
typesetting it (View PDF or DVI) LyX answers immediately with a LyX:  
latex Errors message saying:



Package scrkbase Error: unknown KOMA option `',

}

You have used \KOMAoptions to set `',
but KOMA-Script does not know any option named `'.
See the KOMA-Script manual for more informations about options and
their values.


With some other templates I had similar error abruptions.

I don't find the rejected option `' or the like and no enlightening  
hint in the KOMA-Script manual.


Has someone processed the koma-letter2.lyx with success on Mac-OSX  
already?


Can someone give me instruction or advice to solve the problem?

also with agu-dtd.layout, docbook.layout, ijmpc.layout, ijmpd.layout,  
iopart.layout (iop-article), latex8.layout.


With g-brief.layout it is:
latex Error: Command \Telefon already defined. and

 \newcommand\Telefon{\mvchr{84}}
Your command was ignored.
Type I command return to replace it with another command,
or return to continue without it.


= But from LyX one cannot do that, even if one (not me) knew the  
right command.


Or, opening in Lyx, but when typesetted saying:
revtex.sty not found and:

\renewcommand
{\usepackage}{\RequirePackage}^^M
*** (cannot \read from terminal in nonstop modes)


I don't expect to get the explanation and solution for all these  
disfuntioning Lyx-Templates in my installation, and in case I want to  
use one of these templates I'll come back and ask specifically.


I have TexLive 2007 installed with MacTex, might be that LyX 1.5.6 is  
not exactly build and configured for that?
