Problems with output on Lyx 2
When I try to produce a PDF output document I get an instant error, which reads An error occurred while running: java -jar htmltolatex.jar -input openquestions_v1.html -output openquestions_v1.tex Grateful for pointers. I've a fresh installation of 2.0.0 on Linux Mint 11 Katya. I've been away from Lyx for a year, and now I'm using a fresh installation of 2.00 as against the old version of 1.6 which I had painfully tweaked, but on a now-dead computer..

Success! I am proudly holding my just-published 200 page book -an Italian manual on how to set up and run humanist funerals- which was typeset entirely in Lyx and includes text, tables, photos, external files and even music scores. Thanks to Lyx it looks very professional indeed. I am one happy bear. But I have to say that I'd never have got there without the help and active support which I have received over the last year from this list, every time I ran into something I couldn't do- which was often! So- a very big and heartfelt THANKS to everyone! You are the tops. Richard

captions to graphics are sometimes centred and sometimes not
Using 1.6.5 on ubunto 9..10, and komascript book, I have some photographs insert in floats. Each photograph has a caption. Sometimes the captions are centred on the page, and sometimes they are left justified- and I can see no difference whatsoever in the procedure I adopted (Insert float, + insert graphics) or in the source code. The only difference is that some captions are longer than others. For instance, this is centred: % Preview source code for paragraph 43 % \begin{figure}[H] \includegraphics[width=3.65in]{bolzano_esterno} \caption{La sala del commiato a Bolzano.} \end{figure} And this is left justified: % Preview source code for paragraph 45 % \begin{figure}[H] \includegraphics[width=3.65in,height=2.3in]{bolzano_crocefisso} \caption{Bolzano, il catafalco. ~Da notare i simboli religiosi non \protect \\ sono fissi. } \end{figure} Wherein lies the difference? TIA Richard
Re: Bizarre file not found error using pdfpages
Thanks for your very clear explanation, Paul: it enabled me to understand the problem- which was that I had underscores in the pdf filename. So when lyx mangled the file name (as you put it), it then couldn't read the mangled filename back because my underscores and the mangling underscores confused the issue. The file got lost. Important lesson: don-t use underscores in names of files to be included. Richard
Re: Bizarre file not found error using pdfpages
Thanks for the pointer, Jurgen. I was using 1.6.4 and as a result of your input, have today updated to 1.6.5. This has also solved a few other issues I had with pdfpackages! Richard

Bizarre file not found error using pdfpages
Using pdfpages to put a pdf doc into my komabook book (lyx 1.6 on Ubuntu 9.10), instead of inserting the file I get a bizarre file not found error, which states ' Error: pdfpackages error- can't find file 10_home_richard_Desktop_book2_form' The file it should find, but obviously doesn't, is /./home/richard/Desktop/book2/form but with the backslash changed for all those underscores I'm not surprised the package can't find it. And what gives with the number 10? Anyone any idea what's going on? TIA Richard

IEEE paper submission
Hi, I have written a paper using the IEEE template in lyx. It is now time to submit that paper, IEEE wants either a latex, word, or rtf. When I export the lyx file to plain latex, it does not produce usable output - part of the paper is there, some of the figures are missing and the references show up as question marks (when I try to re-make a pdf from the latex file). Is there an easy way to make a plain latex file from lyx that has all the figures and references done correctly? Thanks. - Rick

PDF error converting to loadable format
I do Insert External Files PDF and select my pdf. I add the pages options for all of the pages (there are 2). Lyx burbles a little, and then spits the error message at me: error converting to loadable format. The file was prepared by a friend on Windows from a Sibelius music notation file. If I examine the pdf file properties I see the following: Format PDF-1.4 Producer GPL Ghostscript 8.70 Creator PDFCreator Version 0.9.9 What might be going wrong? I'm using Komascript Book under lyx 1.6.4 on ubuntu 9.04. Richard
Re: PDF error converting to loadable format
Thanks for this. By following your instructions I managed to a) see the pdf in lyx on screen and b) generate a DVI file. But the place where the pdf should be is empty. If however I c) try to generate a pdf from pdflatex, lyx just goes into an endless loop, from which I can only exit by forcing a program quit. Can not load document class
Yesterday I made a new layout, called it poembook.layout and put it in .lyx/layouts in my home directory. It worked splendidly. I had finally solved my layout problems. Today when I fired up the computer and loaded the lyx document, I get 'The document class poembook can not be loaded.' It seems it can't find the layout file any more. But it's still where I left it yesterday,a s far as I can see. What can I have done wrong? I'm using lyx 1.6.4 on ubuntu 9.04 Richard
where are margins measured from?
If I set custom margins (in document settings), where are the margins measured from? I thought from the edge of the paper as defined in document setings, but this doesn't seem to be so. I'm using komascript book class. Richard

silly newby graphics question
This is a sily question, but my only excuse is I'm trying to understand. Thanks for your patience, understanding and answers! Up to now I've been inserting my photographs and other graphics in a float. But what is the float actually for? Can I just insert the graphics files directly via the Insert Graphics command? If I can, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each system, that is with or without a float? TIA Richard
inserting black and white graphics (musical notation) from TIFF
I have some TIFF files exported from Sibelius, the music scoring program. They are just high-quality images of black and white music scores. I tried converting them to jpg in GIMP for inclusion in my Lyx manuscript, but the results were awful- or at least, they were awful in lyx. When I open the converted jpg files in other software they are really clear and good, but in Lyx onscreen they are very poor and in the dvi files even worse. Many of the fine lines that indicate musical notes are patchy, and a lot have disappeared. Has anyone got any good ideas as to how to process this? TIA

Komascript: changing parameters in stdlayouts.inc to vary parskip
I'm using komascript book, which if I understand aright calls stdlayouts.inc to get its basic parameters. In one of the environments, (verse) i want a different vertical space between every line of the poems. I think each poem line is defined as a separate paragraph. So I decided to change parskip in stdlayouts.inc for the verse environmment. I put Style Verse # LaTeX type is first dynamic because of LaTeX implementation. # In LyX this does not make sense. Category MainText LatexType Environment LatexName verse MarginFirst_Dynamic NextNoIndent 1 LeftMargin LabelIndent ParSkip 0.05 TopSep0.7 BottomSep 0.7 ParSep0.3 Align Block AlignPossible Block, Left LabelType No_Label End But nothing happens, nothing at all. The original values I changed from were ParSkip 0.4 ParSep 0.5 Where is my logic wrong?
Re: Typesetting poetry
Thanks for that Steve. I followed your tutorials, and learned a fair amount: but in the end I found that the new environment I had made had knock-on effects on the paragraphs surrounding those where I applied it- effects I couldn't explain or remove. I hope there's a simpler way.

Koma-script caption question
I have I'm using Koma script book, and I need to adjust the captions for my floats. I'd like to have them without the prefix 'Figu. 1:' etc, just my caption and no other text. So I put \captionsetup[figure]{labelformat=empty} in the preamble, following advice found on this list. The Fig. 1 disappeared fine- but not the colon! So I now have a very ugly and irrelevant : before my caption text. How can I eliminate this? TIA Richard

Typesetting poetry
I'm using Komsascript book, and have a fair amount of poetry in my manuscript. But the VERSE environment is not very satisfactory: The main problem is that there is too much space between one line and the next, and I must absolutely adjust that. It would also be nice if I had greater flexibility for laying out the poems in the manuscript. As always, thanks for your pointers.

I don't seem to be able to vary the distance between paragraphs. I'm sure there must be a way. Grateful for pointers. Richard

Thanks; I tried that but it output only one line of many, hiding the rest and still not printing on the blank page after the title page! in the KOMA script there are also the Uppertitleback and Lowertitleback environments. Maybe this is what you need? Nikos

Uisng koma script book, and having on my title page only a title, subject and authors, for some reason I get a white page after the title page whereas I need to put the title verso there. I can't see any reason why this is happening: what should I check? TIA Richard
Re: how to vary the spacing between paragraphs?
Ehud Kaplan wrote: > Document/Settings/text layout/Vertical space Thanks for that; but I'm sorry I should have been clearer in my question. I don't want to change the default settings for paragraph spacing in the whole document. I just need to be able to say that certain paragraphs will be nearer to the paragraph which follows, on a case by case basis.
Re: title page using koma script book
Thanks; I tried that but it output only one line of many, hiding the rest and still not printing on the blank page after the title page! > in the KOMA script there are also the Uppertitleback and Lowertitleback > environments. Maybe this is what you need? > > Nikos > >
Re: SV: How to replicate the EXERCISE format from the TeXbook inKomsacript and lyx?
You could use the exercise package: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/exercise/ It needs to be installed in your latex-distribution, Thanks for this suggestion, which on paper looks to be what I need. But as a complete newby I am stumped at how to install. I have no idea what steps 1,2,4 and 7 mean! Can you help? Or point me at an explanation? TIA. Installation: - 1- execute latex on exercise.ins 2- execute latex on exercise.dtx 3- produce Index and Change History with makeindex -s gind.ist -o exercise.ind exercise.idx makeindex -s gglo.ist -o exercise.gls exercise.glo 4- and then execute latex on exercise.dtx (again !) 5- copy exercise.sty and exercise.pdf to the correct places in the texmf tree. exercise.sty could be put in $LOCALTEXMF\tex\latex\exercise 6 exercise.pdf is the documentation of the package: it could take place in $TEXMF\doc\latex\exercise 7 - run texhash or the corresponding command of your distribution

not numbering floats
I don't want my photographs to be prefaced with any text or numbers, but only to have the captions I've inserted in each float. My doc is in Italian So I tried \usepackage{babel} \addto\captionsitalian{ \renewcommand{\figurename}{} } \renewcommand{\thefigure} This almost does the job: Figure has become an empty string, and it's not numbering anything. But I still get the colon which is intended to separate Figure N: from the caption. How can I get rid of this?

How to replicate the EXERCISE format from the TeXbook in Komsacript and lyx?
How can a comparative newby adopt the EXERCISE format that Donald Knuth uses in the TeXbook? (key issues: correct numbering of exercises by chapter, and related answers written in the manuscript next to each exercise but printed elsewhere in a separately placed key) I've adopted komascript book format, and am happy and learning. But if I could just put an EXERCISE with its ANSWERS in my manuscript, and have lyx cope with the rest I'd be over the moon... I'm very willing to learn, but slow on the uptake because it's all so new... as always, TIA (lyx 1.5.3 on ubuntu linux)
confused about embedding fonts in a pdf
I have to provide my ms as a pdf; I've read a lot on this list about vector fonts etc, much of which I don't understand: but I trusted, and did it. In documents settings fonts I changed the values from default to Latin Modern Roman, Latin Modern Sans and Latin Modern Typewriter. The default family is Roman. The printer sent the file back as incomplete, with the following message: Your document could not be created: The TimesNewRomanPSMT font is not embedded. The TimesNewRomanPS-BoldMT font is not embedded. The TimesNewRomanPS-ItalicMT font is not embedded. The TimesNewRomanPSMT font is not embedded. I don't understand this: surely I am using Latin Modern Roman, and it is embedded automatically? (a thought strikes me: could these font errors pertain to some pdf files I include, which are musical scores made into a pdf by Sibelius?)
RE: confused about embedding fonts in a pdf
(a thought strikes me: could these font errors pertain to some pdf files I include, which are musical scores made into a pdf by Sibelius?) I'm replying to my own post: this was indeed the case. When I removed the external materials, the problem went away and the printer's objections disappeared. However, this still leaves me with the problem of how to include these scores, which I must include. I am not competent either with musical notation or with the Sibelius software: the pdf files were kindly prepared for me by a friend from within Sibelius itself- though as is now apparent, without embedding the fonts. So the issue has become: Is there some way I can rectify this, by embedding the missing font in my own lyx document? IE, managing a missing embedding in an external file by embedding the font in the parent doc? Or is that unthinkable?

inserting external files: templates question
Hello. In the embedded objects manual, and in other places in documentation, I find it written that I can include files in my lyx document by using Insert File External Material and then choosing a template. But all of the documentation says that available templates are chess, date, lilypond, raster images, and pdf. On my installation I don't have a template option for pdf: why would that be, and how can I remedy it? I get allof the others, but no pdf

Re: DVI, PDF end PS behave differently with photographs
You will then get an image that works with DVI, PDF and PS. These alternatives handles images a little differently, and LyX knows that. But LyX doesn't help you with ERT stuff. Thanks for that. I finally managed this afternoon to try, and it is easier to manage, certainly: BUT the dvi files I make don't contain the JPG photographs: that is, the file compiles OK with no errors, and the correct amount of space is left, but no file is there, just the caption. PDFs come out fine on the other hand. But the quality of the rest is much higher on my system using a dvi so I'd prefer to use that...
insert a pdf in my lyx doc
I've found a number of posts that say the best way to insert a pdf file is to use Insert File External material and choose the pdf template option. However, when I do this I only get chess, lily pond and raster templates offreed. I read somewhere that I need to update the includepdf package if I get this problem- but I haven't a clue how to do that. Can someone give me a pointer? Thanks! I'm running lyx 1.5.3 on ubuntu 8.04 TIA Richard

DVI, PDF end PS behave differently with photographs
I'm confused about the different ways to generate final copy. Specifically, using the following Evil Red Text, after an includepackage graphicx in the preamble, \begin{figure}[h] \includegraphics {bw_albergo.eps} \caption{A picture of a room.} \end{figure} if I generate copy with the DVI button, I get caption and space but no picture and no error message. If I do the same with the Postscript button, I get the same. If I do it with PDF, I get nop picturte but an error message- can't define the size of the picture. So if I change to \begin{figure}[h] \includegraphics {bw_albergo.eps} \caption{A picture of a tucan.} \end{figure} and use the pdf button, it works. Why does it behave differently? Richard

photographs: what format to use for b/w printing via lyx?
Does anyone have any useful input on what photo format gives the best quality results on b/w printing via lyx? Are there any optimal values, or things to worry about? TIA Richard
RE: photographs: what format to use for b/w printing via lyx?
Thanks for that encouraging reply, Rob. Can I ask a quick supplementary? I have colour jpgs, not particularly high res but neither are they poor. And I'm making a pdf for submission to a printer, to be printed in b/w. The jpgs are atthe moment much bigger than I need: I'll have to scale them to about 40%. Should I process the jpgs into monochrome tiffs? Or would the conversion cost me definition? On Mon, 2010-01-25 at 11:20 -0700, Rob Oakes wrote: Hi Richard, What kinds of photos are they? Do you have high-res copies for printing on a press or will you be printing from a desktop computer? The answer to your original question really depends on what you want to do with them. My experience with LyX has been that it does a pretty good job with whatever images you feed to it, but it isn't a photo manipulation program. All of the manipulation should happen to the input images before you compile into a DVI or PDF. After that, you will need to make the changes to the PDF in a program like Inkscape, Acrobat Professional, or Illustrator. In general, however, I would recommend that you use TIFF images for black + white and grayscale (either uncompressed or lossless compression). Greyscale images are much smaller than color images with only a single channel of information. In contrast, color images often have three or four channels of information. Since they contain much less data, using lossy compression (such as JPEG) doesn't result in a much smaller image size. Additionally, JPEG and other compressed image formats will often introduce distortions. While this won't be visible if printing on a desktop printer or viewing on screen, it is a terribly bad idea to use low resolution or compressed images in a file bound for a printing press. For graphs and other data graphics, I would highly recommend creating either an EPS or PDF image. When doing so, make sure that the graphic is a vector based image rather than a rasterized version. This will result in a much crisper looking print reproduction. The process for doing so varies from program to program, however. Best of luck with your project. Cheers, Rob Oakes

Thanks, Rob. That was very clear and helpful! Richard On Mon, 2010-01-25 at 13:12 -0700, Rob Oakes wrote: Hi Richard, Can I ask a quick supplementary? Of course. If you don't convert them, then someone (or worse, some machine) at the printers will. This can sometimes result in a final product different than you had envisioned. Black and white is a completely different medium than color and it usually takes a little bit of tweaking to make sure that you get the images to your satisfaction. For example, most black and white photos should have a bit more contrast and a slightly higher adjusted exposure than the equivalent color photograph. This helps to bring out relevant details that might otherwise not be visible. (Keep in mind that I tend to be extremely fussy about images and figures.) The conversion shouldn't really cost you any definition, since you're only converting from color to black and white. Loss of definition seems to happen when changing the physical dimensions of the image. The conversion can be done in the photo program of your choice, but using Photoshop or Gimp will give you a tremendous amount of fine control over the image appearance. Re: JPEG to Tiff conversion. If your source images are already JPEG, then you shouldn't you don't really gain anything by saving it to TIFF (though I would anyway). If you save back to JPEG, make sure that the quality bar is set to 100%, or it will further compress the image and you will lose additional data. Also, when you scale the images, make sure that they aren't down sampled (some image editing programs don't distinguish between the pixel dimensions and the physical dimensions). You want the pixel dimensions to remain the same, regardless of the physical dimensions. Most printing presses require images that are at least 300 dpi, though bigger is *always* better. It's a completely different mindset than when creating something for online distribution. Thus, I would avoid Photoshop's Save for Web and Devices feature or anything any-way similar. The entire purpose of Save for Web and Devices and co. is to down sample, not scale. One final thought: as long as the source images are of sufficient size, I would stick to scaling inside of LyX itself. There is a dialog box that will let you specify the physical dimensions without messing with the source image. Hope this is of some help. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to let me know. Cheers, Rob
