My experience is only that there is a format version number for LyX at the head
of each lyx file. If those are not the same, then whichever is the older LyX
will refuse to handle the newer format.

Meanwhile, the newer LyX will upgrade an older file to the new format.

Of course this is correct behaviour, I merely have to ensure that I have the
same version in both places. Yes, I agree, it does not have to be the same
beyond the minor version, i.e. at present any 2.3.x.

Best regards

This question is not clear. MikTeX and LyX are two seperate packages.
The latest version of LyX is compatible with the latest version of
MikTeX as I have tried it just yesterday on a fresh PC.

If you are asking if two LyX versions should be same or not, I think, if
you are using versions of 2.3.x, it should not be a problem, as I have
tried this with some of my students and we did not have an issue.

Good.

In my opinion, even if one of the LyX has version of LyX 2.2.x, and the
other is 2.3.x, it should not be a problem as long as both LyX programs
are setup and running properly. However, there maybe certain features in
versions 2.3.x that may not be available in 2.2.x, which may create some
warnings when opening in v 2.2.x. Maybe you should ask this as a
separate question to the list, if you are using an older version o LyX.

I remember this guidance, and it feels like a "more-pure" approach, so that
is why I try it first each time I must install on Windows. However,
because of my poor success with getting the TeXLive installer to complete
successfully on Windows, I end up with MiKTeX with no ill effects (thus
far). Admittedly, I use Windows rather infrequently, so I'm not the best
authority for the approach here.

I am overwhelmed by the many helpful advises. For the time being I will
use my linux LyX and ask my colleague to use MikTeX, since at the start

I have linux at home and windows at work and I occasionally move a lyx file from
one to the other. It is perfectly straightforward. The key gotchas I can
recall are these and they are not serious:

- the lyx versions must be identical.

- if there are any special modules, both must be present in both places.

- the file might well look a little different in lyx on Windows and Linux. This
is not a real problem for me but might be if your colleague is not co-located
  with you.

- My Acrobat Reader on Windows is anti-social about closing the file. I always
have to approve closing the existing version when I compile a new version.

It means the fonts LyX uses for math displays in the GUI aren't properly
installed under Windows. Check that a .\Resources\fonts directory
exists under your LyX program directory, and that it contains nine
TrueType font files (.ttf) and the BaKoMa4LyX font license. If not,
snag them here (ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/contrib/BaKoMa4LyX-1.1.zip)
and unpack them. Now crank up the Windows font applet (from the Control
Panel). If it shows any or all of those fonts installed, delete them in
the font applet. Then reinstall them from the LyX fonts directory.
Restart LyX and cross your fingers.

2005-12-27 Thread Robert Neumann

Hello, I'm using Lyx 1.3.6-1 on windows xp and I get sometimes this error Latex
error: "Cannot determine size of graphic in H:/...file.lyx"
It seems to refer to a grafic in a table in the lyxfile. The whole thing works
perfectly when I use lyx on Linux, even when I take the file with the error
message on windows.
Can anybody help me?
thanks
Robert

To get this working so as to be able to use ViewâTex Information you
need to:

   1. Associate your .sh files with sh.exe (..\lyx\bin) Right click on
any .sh file, choose PropertiesâOpens with and then browse for sh.exe.
Possibly not needed but doing so works!
   2. Install GnuWin32 findutils.exe (the package setup) from here

   3. Ensure the GnuWin32\bin directory is in you system PATH ahead of

Inserting Bibtex in lyx for Windows

2005-03-07 Thread Geoffrey Lloyd
Hi
I am using lyx win32 port by Ruurd Reitsma (1.3.5). When i goto to
insert->lists->Bibtex reference i get the following windows error message.

windows cannot open this file
file: TeXFiles.sh

and then the usual choice of how to open it.
Any advice on how to get round this bug and actually insert a *.bib file.
Many thanks

Note that 1.3.5 does search for acrord32 now.

My guess is that configure script is not finding the native windows

Are you saying that the View menu has neither the DVI entry nor any of
the three PDF entries [PDF, PDF (dvipdfm), PDF (pdflatex)]?

Lack of the PDF entries could be due to the viewer not having been set
in the preferences dialog, but if you are also missing the DVI option,
it could be that LyX can't find your MiKTeX distribution for some reason.

the first problem i've had with this port is that i can't create pdfs
using pdflatex. i get "bad command or file name" even though the

Now, I use Linux, but, before, I worked with Ruurd's LyX version for

you have MikTeX installed? pdflatex should be in MikTeX distribution.

Try using dvipdfm for creating your Pdf files

For a few hints and tips have a look at my page: The notes are for Win
XP set up but may be of use for win98 - if so let me know ;-)

http://www.soton.ac.uk/~rds2/WinLyxsetupnotes.htm

It might be that you can solve all your problems by installing a newer
version of Sed as per the notes on this page.

>when i try edit->reconfigure from lyx, nothing seems to happen.

Installing new sed.exe or the edit to the configure.bat (under "Other
minor fixes") might sort this.

If not try running configure from a command window i.e.
Cd to where configure.bat resides and see if it runs ok from there.

That's actually a patch for the source code.. so I presume it is
possible to compile that patch with the source code for LyX (1.3.2

Sure it is. However, it is not a "package" but a patch to the LyX
source code. To use it you will have to download the source, apply
this patch, apply Ruurd Reitsma's Win32 patch and follow the
instructions on his page to compile and package the lyx executable
for a Win32 machine.

If you're not willing to do all that, then may I direct you to Dekel
Tsur's python script which is not integrated into LyX but will
nonetheless produce change tracking markup in the latex-compiled
output. See

I've used both fptex and the Cygwin tetex. The native one was faster,
but the difference was not that big for me. The convenience of the
installation of the Cygwin tetex won out in my case.

lyx for windows: Why not the cygwin tetex?

2002-12-20 Thread Max Bian
I am really interested in working in a windows environment on lyx since
most or my figures are created using Microcal Origin anyway.

Following the link at lyx.org I went to a great site about installing
lyx on windows. I saw the following:

"As of today be sure to SKIP (NOT INSTALL) the package tetex"

My question is why. I'd like to use the tetex package comes with cygwin
if possible. I am not really interested in another latex distro as the
site suggests.

Can anyone explain if it is possible to use the cygwin tetex package
instead of a native windows package?

Thanks!

LyX for Windows

2002-03-26 Thread Roberto Hernandez

Hey everyone,

I've been using LyX on Linux for a few months. Now I'm trying to install
it on Windows so I can view LyX files on both platforms.

I installed fpTeX and Cygwin. Then I followed the instructions for
installing the Windows version of LyX. According to the documentation:

"Installing the package 'Xfree86-Runtime' is only necessary if you do
not have installed the XFree server. Unselecting that package works as
described above for the Cygwin installation"

So I installed XFree86-Runtime, but when I try to open LyX I get a
message that the X server is not found. Since xfree86-runtime only
installs a few DLL's, I don't know how to get the server running
_BEFORE_ executing LyX.

Any pointers?

TIA,

Roberto

UPDATE of Lyx for Windows

2001-10-02 Thread Claus Hentschel

Due to a change in Cygwin release 1.3.3 access to DOS/Win32 drives will not
be supported using //x as in releases before.

Therefore I have recompiled Lyx using the newest Cygwin release and have
updated all scripts and my installation instructions you can find as usual
here:

If anybody using Lyx 1.1.6fix3 has upgraded to Cygwin 1.3.3 he SHOULD
upgrade Lyx to release 1.1.6fix3a, too!

See your X-server documentation how you can change the access
control. Usually X servers accept connections originating from the same
machine you're running it (localhost) but not from anywhere else.
On Unix you could try
xhost +
command to disable access control and allow connections from everywhere.
Try something similar -- as a test -- with your X server.

HOWEVER! Do not leave access control disabled for your normal
use. Otherwise anyone could connect your X server and give any commands,
maybe opening a terminal window and sending d, e, l, , c, :, \, *, ., *
keypresses.

Re: Help with lyx for windows

Here is what your lyxprofile should look like:

# Set up your home directory (in Cygwin syntax)

# Set up your Language (if you do not want English)
#export LANG=DE

#
# Below this line you should not change anything if you're
# not familiar with configuration of an unix application!
#
export PATH="/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:$PATH"
export USER="`id -un`"
export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
export MAKE_MODE=unix

unset DOSDRIVE
unset DOSDIR
unset TMPDIR
unset TMP

for i in /etc/profile.d/*.sh ; do
  if [ -f $i ]; then
. $i
  fi
done

cd "$HOME"

test -f ./.bashrc && . ./.bashrc
*
and your runlyx.bat in your cygwin directory should look like:

*
@echo off
:: START YOUR X-SERVER HERE

:: First change into its directory (The path should
:: be quoted if there is any space character in it!)
:: Then call the executable, i.e. xwin32 here!
::
echo "Starting X-Win32 ..."
cd "F:\Program Files\StarNet\X-Win32"
start .\xwin32.exe

:: Change your geometry settings in the last line so
:: the LyX window will fit on your screen!
::
cd F:\cygwin\bin
start .\lyxwin32.exe -geometry 900x800+100+5
*
When you start lyx, this is the file that you run, not any other. It starts
your X server then Lyx.
Hope this helps,
Amer

Hi,
This is my second mail on topic, but I don't know how to solve my problem
in other ways.

I've installed lyx for windows (1.1.6 fixc) in this environment:

- Pc Laptop Pentium III (Acer 524TE)
- Windows Millenium Edition
- cygwin
- X-win32 or Exceed
- MikTex

When I try to start lyx it says: "Unable to access X display - exiting"

Someone told me to modify the DISPLAY variable in the file /etc/lyxprofile
in order to change the value localhost to the true IP address of my
machine, but nothing seems to change.

I have no firewall or other protections.

Someone could help me ???
Thanks a lot

Just for information what I have been answered to that topic some days ago:

There may be two reasons for that:

1. Edit C:\Cygwin\lyxprofile and set the correct IP address, followed by an
':0' for DISPLAY. If you have an Ethernet card installed on your system
please use it's IP address instead of 127.0.0.1! Most X-Servers
automatically serve the default IP address of your system. 127.0.0.1 (or
localhost, i.e. the corresponding net name) is only valifd if you do have a
DUN on your system.

2. If you have installed a firewall on your system (like me) than you have
to create a new rule so that LyX can connect to the X-server. (Take a look
at your firewall distributor, to learn how this has to be made!)

Because it was running I expect that editing lyxprofile could fix the
problem!

You could try setting environment variables like
set DISPLAY=localhost:0
and replace localhost with your computer's name if the above doesn't work.
Or try running lyx with argument "-display localhost:0"

Can you run remotely X programs from real unix computers?

I think we still have problems with these scripts under windows when
the paths where the programs are contain spaces. Is this your case?

Lyx for windows 95 - Install questions

2000-04-17 Thread Sheldon F. Oppenheim

I have been trying to use the Windows 95 port of lyx but I can't seem to
overcome several install problems. Maybe some one on the list has a
solution.

First, when I run the runconfigure.bat it looks for LaTeX2e then latex.
The final result is a line "latex...unusable" I have tried this with
miktex and fptex. Neither includes LaTeX2e file. What is the fix so that
these are recognized. At the present fptex is installed and the latex is
on the path.

Second, where does ispell need to be installed? The runconfigure comes up
"ispell...no" Ispell is on the path. How do I get it to see Ispell?

Thanks

Sheldon
